This will be the final installment of these process books made for IMI.

    Ever!

I wanted to take this oppurtuinity to say that this final year (along with the previous ones) has been a fast but difficult journey. Now Ive reached the end of this course. Which I think is an accomplishment in itself. But, Im glad I made it.I hope to make more mistakes and progress through out the years of my continuing and ever growing artistic journey. It has been an absolute pleasure being able to gain new experiences and learn so many new lessons along the way.

But without further ado, please enjoy the final processes, ramblings and inner workings of my mind!

    Hello!

Originally, for this project I wanted to explore the haptic brief by trying to explore possible way to combine the sense of touch with illustration/animation. Initially, the first idea I had in mind was inspired by a video found from the Disney Research Labs Youtube page.

It was a simple touch interactive story picture book for children made out of a few simple items and the use of an aurdino. Due to a few personal matters and mental blocks along with frustrations I had decided to put the idea to one side and go with something I previously had in mind.

From the storybook idea, I was inspired to try and create something similar with the use of interaction and animation. My idea however, was actually taken from a scrapped idea I originally had for the Expanded Cinema brief from the previous year.

The aim was to connect animation and interaction through the use of motion. Almost, as if the audience/user was able to physically engage with the animated character. I wanted to create an animation based off of my personal experiences of being an introvert.

But this was inspired also from something Joel had said on the very first day of starting IMI:

    WallFlowerpart: one

    Something about flowers?

    No room for Wallflowers

  • 10 11

This had struck a cord with me and I wanted to find a way to explore this notion of a wallflower through the use of animation and interaction. To begin, I started off with sketching a quick idea of what I had in mind.

I then created a small mock up using an artists maniquinne just to get an idea of how the flower shape would work over the characters head. From this I had started to sketch out a quick and small storyboard of what I wanted to do with my narrative.Originally, I wanted to try out a more traditional, hand drawn approach to the wall flower piece. However, due to time constraints, lack of certain resources and knowledge I ended up using photoshop to achieve the same type of technique.

I had made an inital rough animation from my story boards, once I had a rough down I then started to think about presentation and how I would approach the interactive side of the project.

  • 12 13

Made a mock up test copy using a small artists drawing mannequin. The idea was to help me visualise how the actual flower would close on the head of the character.I found this to be very helpful as I did have a difficult time trying to mentally visualise and draw out the movement of the flower itself.

  • 14 15

Using arduino and MAX MSP combined to help achieve the effect I was aiming for with the piece. The image pictured here demonstrates the actual set up of the arduino and how myself and Alan firgued how to connect it to the pressure plate mat.

So many wires...ooo whats this do?

  • 16 17

in times of doubt, ask Alan to help you out!!

With Alans help we were trying to figure out how to get the animation working with the use of a pressure floor sensor at first.

We did this by playing around with preset features already avaiable for us on MAX MSP and finding aurdino tutorials. I was really lucky to have the help of Alan on this part of the project

  • 18 19

  • 20 21

After much discussion with Biggles, I was told the piece was too literal in my interpretation and way of thinking. He wanted me to push the idea and myself in reinterpreting

So after taking a step back and thinking things over, I decided to return to the piece and actually try to expand upon it. First I decided on moving on from using just drawn images to photographs of myself.

Taking out the literal sense of the flower forming around the characters head and replacing it with an actual action or reaction through my facial expressions. I thought this would be much more effective as it is still a way to connect it back to my experience of dealing with social anxiety and introvertedness.

Also, in terms of the interactive/animation side of things I wanted to bring the animation back to a more analogue approach through flip book styled animation, which would still allow the user to have an interactive/physical approach but also create an animated narrative that unfolds before the users very eyes. This was also mainly due to not having access to the program MAX MSP on hand.

When starting my creation of the flip book itself, I did a number of different experiments to understand how flip books worked and how to create the narrative I wanted. To achieve

this I had first experimented by animating the pictures using Photoshop exploring which of the many variations I had taken during my session in photography. (Thank you, Ronnie and Miyu!)

I decided to go with the last batch taken, and began setting it up on Photoshop accordingly. I found it worked very well; the next objective was to explore the various ways I could tell my story through the images as I did feel they werent exactly enough.

But before doing so I decided to print off a few test copies to see if I could get the images to work in the flip book format along with what size would work best for the narrative.Once I was happy with the size I wanted for the flip book, I began to start designing and experimenting with both the over all look and narrative of the story.

  • 24 25

Some of the photos taken from the actual photoshooting process. (again, a big thank you to both Miyu and Ronnie for helping me with the photoshoot!!) I did a few different variations of the same basic narrative I had in mind. However, after reflecting and working on the actual flip book, it felt like I needed a little more planning, boarding and experimenting to really help push the idea.

Left: Miyu taking the images whilst I was acting out the movements for my narrative.

Right: One of the many poses I did during the photoshoot session. It was a lot of fun getting to physically act again.

With the help of Miyu I was able to take a good amount of photos for my second version of the wallflower project!

(also thanks,Ronnie. for your help with documentation!!)

  • 28 29

My first ever test and sample of the flip book using one of the sets from the photoshoot. It tested rather well considering the photos were taken using the shutter settings, which helped to make the process a little smoother!

An identity exploration project inspired by a simple conversation between my tutor and myself, based on the experiences Ive faced as someone who is a bilingual child, yet struggles with their mother tongue. In this case the project had been inspired by my depression, or more specifically how struggling to speak Turkish to relatives and grand parents contributed to it.

I decided to approach this project, by immediately interviewing and questioning my parents about their lives growing up and what it was like for them coming to England. From this I had made a list of questions to ask both my grandparents and parents to try and get more information about our family.

I had recorded my family both formally and informally, by taking samples of everyone talking in general to actual small interviews with each family member using the questions I had come up with. It was interesting with how they all responded to the questions asked as well as being recorded.

During the duration of this project, however something unexpected happened. On December 22nd 2014 my granddad passed away. It was a tough time for me along with everyone in my family. (Because of this I did struggle to really focus on anything project related.)

I did however, managed to bounce back from this unfortunate situation by taking inspiration by one of my favourite graphic novelists Marjane Satrapi. I found I could relate a lot to her story although our living situations and language situations were different I could still relate to her struggles and even relate them back to my own mothers child hoodgrowing up.

Im meant to be heard not seen.

Upon further research I had remembered a poem which I had studied back in secondary school called Search for my Tongue by Sujata Bhatt. A bilingual Indian poet who expressed her frustrations of how it felt to live with two tongues.

This poem had stuck with me ever since I had first read about back at school. Because of this I felt inspired and compelled to create a poem of my own using her poem along with many others as reference point and inspiration.

Before writing my own poem, during the research process. I tried to look more into bilingual poems and more specifically looking into Turkish poems or any Turkish-english poems that might be out there. This did prove to be a little difficult and almost felt that there was very little to work with.

But, from my inital research of bilingual poems I found some interesting podcast interviews of Latin-American/Cuban-American poets. In this particular case an interview with poet and writer Gustavo Perez Firmat, who reads an extract from a book called Bilingual Blues.

This peaked my interest and helped further influence my inspiration for my own poem. I had written out a few variations of the narrative I had in mind. The aim was to try and portray my frustrations of the personal struggles I had being a bilingual child.

Once, I had a poem I was happy with I had then moved onto the recording process (as pictured left). I had done a few takes and picked the one I felt the most pleased with. Now that the audio was finished I had taken it into after effects, along with the scanned self portraits I had done for the duration of this project.

Another self initiated project, this time it was between Alan and myself, we had decided to work together to help me push myself out there and create something based on what I enjoy and am passionate about. Which in this case was animation and illustration.

At the beginning of this project we had both agreed on trying to come up with an idea for story, which would then be turned, into a 10-minute short film. (Thats shorts?!) First we started discussing and brainstorming the different key themes we wanted to explore through the piece itself. Alan had actually approached me one during the project suggesting we create something for our friends whom we hardly get to see or spend time with due to time, location and just generally drifting apart. After brainstorming what we wanted to communicate through this story we had broken down the ideas and themes into the following: friendship, loss and memory. From this I had started to sketch a few different ways we could achieve and communicate this through visual narrative. We had finally narrowed down the idea to The Girl And The Polar Bear, which was actually inspired by the music video of Kyary Pamyu Pamyus Yumeno Hajima ring ring following a girl and her imaginary polar bear on her journey of growing up. I really liked the idea of a human and animal friendship but instead of following the music video narrative entirely I wanted to try and relate it back to both Alan and myself with our vision of friendship, separation and loss.

    Six word storypart: one

    once upon a time...

  • 58 59

Once we both were happy with the idea we had both then started sketching and creating our own visual interpretations of how the characters and settings would look.

During the early stages of this project I had complied a play list of different animations and animators which I felt would be a good reference and influence point for the overall style of the film along with the pacing and storytelling. Both myself and Alan were looking at a range of visual sources for inspiration and for how we wanted to create the film.

To begin, we had both started off by writing out our own interpretations and versions of the story itself, once sending each other a copy of the others work we had both stand down together and looked through it. We seemed to like certain aspects and had combined elements from each others version of the story.Once we combined and edited down the story with something we were more happy with and agreed on. We each then started to come up with initial story boards and visuals for how the actual story would communicate and look visually on screen. Each reviewing and taking something from each others ideas and boards this was an incredibly interesting and rewarding process to experience.

From there it was a process of boarding and designing the overall look and feel of the characters along with their environments. However, due to a few personal problems outside of uni things had become rather difficult to focus on and work with this project in particular. But, also due to the fact that Alan seemed to take on a number of projects and not really spend as much time on our one.

We had then had a brief discussion with our tutor about our idea and what we were both going for.Biggles seemed fine with the overall project idea but he did give us a few warnings and criticisms of our initial stages of this project.

    They were:

Be careful with the style and try to avoid making it too cutesy, sugary, gooie sweet (His words...Not mine.)

Avoiding the cliche of the schmaltzy approach to the overall look and tone of the story.

More exploration needed for the approach of the story

Unfortunately, the girl and the polar had been scrapped as we found ourselves short on time due to dealing with both personal matters as well as the dissertation eating into our time. So we decided to scrap this story project and come up with something shorter and a bit easier to handle in terms of workload and time management.

    Six word storypart: two

Because of this we had another chat about how to we could still create an animated piece, Alan suggested the idea of creating small shorts based on a previous project titled six word story. He showed me some of his inital ideas and sketches of what he had in mind for the story. He had four to five ideas in mind of how to approach our theme of friendship and loss which we still carried on since the beginning stages of the project.(Our previous story had been scrapped and now it was in my hands to do with as I please as a personal project.)

Through out this process, I was given the task of character designer, storyboard and concept artist. I created all the designs of the characters, props and backgrounds as well as setting up the frames/shots and storyboarding the entire short itself. For the storyboarding process I was influenced by particular artists mainly storyboard and concept artists which helped me learn and understand how to approach my storyboards. Artists such as Bobby Chu, Steven Silver, Claire Keane, Ryan Woodward ect. I achieved by using a vairity of sources such concept art books, internet and books on storyabording/animation as a source of learning and inspiration through the duration of the process of the whole project itself.

I even used some of the tips and methods which were provided by two visual and storytelling artist who are the husband and wife team known as GrizandNorm. This was incredibly useful as this help me so much during the storyboarding stages, as well as showing other people for extra feedback and critics of my

    boards.

Once the boards were finished and the designs were finalized, I moved onto creating each individual scene on illustrator. We wanted to go for a more line less and blocky approach to the over all style and look for the final film. However, during certain times through out the project I was still a bit unsure with how I felt with the style I had used and chosen in the end. I should have give myself much more time to think things through and using the research I had gathered of different animators and animations developing and playing aroud with my own style more. It felt too simple, generic and computerised. Again I needed to give myself more time and oppurtunity to play around and really push my limits as a designer and animator. (The main reason for this was because I was struggling with a few personal and mental issues which made it very difficult to focus and be 100% on board, thanks to Alan I was able to get through it)

After finishing all the designs and clean up for each scene, I had then transferred everything over to Alan who was in charge of animation, sound and editing process. During the animating period we were back and forth with everything and I was given the final task of writing out all the lines of the story itself. Once returning back for the final term and having a chat with my tutor Biggles, I had shown him the final product we had managed to produce. He had given a very good amount of critisim and feedback on how we could improve upon the final animation iself. His feedback has consisted of notes such as:

Style of music needed to be changed it felt too sugary sweet, cutsey babyish instead of something that was dealing with an emotional subject.

The art style itself was considered to be a little too cutesy (again) and too computerised. Suggesting that it was a little lifeless because it was all done on computer. Biggles suggested perhaps adding some textures to the imagery would help bring to life more.

Certain areas of animation was a little confusing and clunky.

The final shot of the turtle and whale character needed to be fixed as they looked odd looking in opposite directions but sweeping off to the left together.

Overall, the whole experience of working with and collaborating with Alan was a fun and rewarding one. However, I do feel we should have spent more time communicating and working together, but I still feel we did an excellent job considering all thats been going on for both of us as well as dealing with more than one project at a time.

Still, at time I did feel Alan could be a little too picky and specific with particular things through the duration of this project. I should have been more assertive and put my foot down with ideas and aspects I didnt agree with or felt slightly unsure about. For instance I should have been more assertive about my ideas and perspective on the style aspect, designs and the animation style. (And I say he was picky!)Exploration of stlye as well as animation which would have been a good chance to add to my portfolio and test what I was really capable of.

All in all it was still a good experience working with someone else and has taught me so much about team work and dealing with other people during the duration of a project.

    gender and comics.

After handing in the final version of the dissertation, it was quite clear that there was still a lot more that could have been done with the essay itself. After having a number of conversations with my CTS tutor, Ian Horton through out the duration of the dissertation itself. It was obvious that my topic would work well by being translated into a visual comic book format.

Before I began on the project I decided to have another chat with Ian since the hand-in. I was given some advice on how to approach the comic book itself. (Show the notes you had taken that day)My approach to the comic was inspired by many different comic book creators such as Scott McCloud, Stephen Mcranie, Lucy Kinsley, Erika Moen etc.

Their style of story telling had drawn me in a lot more especially as I didnt want to approach the typical styles of hero comic or manga format. I wanted to make the book more of a visual essay but without having the constraint of a frame all the time like in most conventional and mainstream comics. Or seen through Scott McClouds example from Understanding Comics series. However, I still was able to draw inspiration from these to help gain a better understanding of how I wanted to approach my own comic.

    dissertationtraNSFORMATION

  • 76 77

To begin, I decided to re-read my dissertation, looking through out each section to see what I felt would be important to discuss visually through the comic itself. Once I had done that I broken down each key area and started to do some initial sketches and explore ideas of how to present these ideas.

From there, I decided to explore the style for both the overall book and my comic avatar of myself, keeping this in mind from my discussion with Ian.I decided to create both a physical and digital mock up of the comic itself. I found this was a good way to help get a better sense how the comic would turn out but also a good way to deal with the time constrain issues I had with this project.

Initially I did feel excited and motivated to work on this project, but there seemed to be a few problems along the way in terms of a mental and physical block which caused a lot of struggle and motivational issues for myself through out the course of the project. Again, I just found it hard to balance a lot of things especially mentally since I kept feeling overwhelmed and distract by a lot of different things both outside and inside of university.
