Believe It!Believe it or not, winter AND SPRING! are just around the corner, and it is already time to start scheduling your child’s activities for January through May.

Minnesota is known for it’s pretty winters and all the opportunities that our cold and snow provide us. Take advantage of the season that not everyone gets to experience with a program like Outdoor Adventures with Active Solutions-Cold Weather Style! If that seems too extreme for your child, try an indoor activity to keep warm...we have art classes, LeGOS, science exploration options, including the Inventors Fair, FRee Family Movies and much more.

As beautiful as the winters can be, spring can be a welcome relief! Get outside and enjoy the fresh air with Archery, Golf Club, or Backyard Ballistics. Or, stay inside and see what you can accomplish... challenge yourself to create a movie all your own, prepare for an upcoming ACT or SAT Test, or develop a new hobby, like Fencing or drawing.

If you just can’t think that far in advance to plan for March through May, please keep this catalog for reference in the coming months. As long as space is available in your favorite class options, you will continue to be able to register for our classes throughout the winter and spring. Visit www.priorlakesavagece.com or call 952.226.0080 to get your child’s space reserved!

Sincerely,Carrie Dobie, Youth Programs Coordinator

InvEnToRs faIR(KIndERGaRTEn-5Th GRadE) The whole world is looking for “the next great thing!” Nobody knows what will end up changing the way people work or play, but your idea could be it! Inventors are people that are trying to solve problems, by coming up with a new product or by improving one that already exists. Most inventions are ideas that come from a problem that is noticed, so pay attention to the problems you, your family members, or your pets encounter throughout the day. How could you make this problem disappear? An invention is the idea that someone has to address a problem. The inventor then turns that idea into a solution by building an object. enter your idea in the District 719 Inventors Fair! All registrants will have the opportunity to display their invention at the District Inventors Fair on February 13th. Following the Inventors Fair, students in grades 3-5 may submit an entry form to have their invention reviewed for inclusion in a Regional Competition at the Mall of America on May 5, 2012. You may work alone or with a partner on your invention for the ISD 719 event (separate fees apply for partners), but only single entrants are eligible to display their inventions at the Regional event. For both fairs, you will need to produce either a functioning prototype or a model of your invention. You will be judged on the research you complete to ensure that this is a new idea, how you tested your invention, the log that you kept of the invention process, your display board, and your verbal explanation and presentation of the invention. Additional fees ($15) apply for students chosen to participate in the regional event. Watch for more details in your backpack folders!

JamEs and ThE GIanT PEaCh(aGEs 8-17)Stagehands Productions performance based program encourages you to develop artistic, social and personal skills through the exploration of your own creativity and expression. This course aims to cultivate stage presence, performance technique and an appreciation of the performing arts. This creative environment nurtures your natural gifts and develops the strengths critical to theatrical performances, such as character development, vocalization, focusing on diction and projection, memorization and choreography. A magical peach! An imprisoned boy! Insect friends! An incredible journey! This amazing adventure of James Henry Trotter will fulfill the fantasy of anyone who has ever dreamed of escape. Roald Dahl’s story comes hilariously to life in this delightful dramatization that reveals the wickedness of some, the goodness of others, and the indecision encountered by many when they are faced with crises. You will see James (as he cleverly gets the Peach out of danger), the wise Old-Green-Grasshopper and the pessimistic earthworm. You will also see James’ mean Aunt Spiker and cruel Aunt Sponge come to a suitably sticky end. The action is tied together by the Narrator, a storyteller, motivator, emcee and audience friend. Take advantage of the quick costuming, simple props and basic scenery that provide the cast and audience with an exciting, peachy adventure! Auditions are held during the second session. Additional fees are charged to attend performances ($5 per attendee), however each cast member will receive two complimentary tickets to one performance.

SleeplessinAmericaIs this Child Misbehaving or

Missing Sleep? with Mary Sheedy Kurcinka

Does your child refuse to cooperate in the morning? Do you dread the constant

bickering and fights between siblings, especially late in the afternoon? Does your

child get into trouble for not listening or lacking focus? Is it a battle every time your

child has to complete a task — any task? Is your child “losing it” over seemingly insignificant issues, like a bad hair day?

Does your child seem to “resist” sleep? Are you tired? Really tired?

It is estimated that 60 percent of American children, from infants to teens, are wired and tired, too exhausted to behave well and unable to sleep. Could your child be one of them?

In this refreshingly warm and practical guide, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka shows you how to:• Recognize whether your child is

misbehaving or missing sleep• Identify the everyday decisions that may

be innocently disrupting your child’s sleep

• End the bedtime and nighttime struggles and as a result stop the “misbehaviors” during the day

• Get the sleep your family needs and deserves.

From the SuperintendentAt Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools, we work very hard on customer service with the end goal of meeting or exceeding parent’s, student’s and the general public’s expectations.

One of our goals is to make it as easy as possible for families to find information about our schools and ultimately enroll their student into Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools.

That is why we recently implemented Central enrollment in our district. This feature offers everything a parent needs to enroll their child in one of our schools.

By going to www.priorlakesavage.k12.mn.us, parents can click on “enroll in Our Schools” under the Quick Guide. From there, parents can find a video about our e-12 education and all the forms needed to enroll their student in school, with step-by-step instructions, all in one convenient location.

Forms can be submitted electronically or dropped off at the District Services Center in Prior Lake. Information about our programs and services such as curriculum, special education, gifted and talented, school-age care through Kids’ Company and more can also be found on the Central enrollment web page.

Another new feature we are now offering includes a School Finder. From our website parents can click on the School Finder link and type in their home address. The neighborhood school will be listed along with a map, school website link and transportation information.

While online, parents can also make an appointment to visit the school their child will attend. These new features have been implemented to make it easier on families who may be moving to the Prior Lake-Savage area and for families who already live in our district and wish to enroll their student from the comfort of their home; one-stop shopping.

While these new customer service features are designed with convenience in mind, face-to-face interaction remains very important. That is why kindergarten registration will still be conducted in our schools on February 21st.

We have made these changes to enhance our accessibility to families 24/7. We want to share our Prior Lake-Savage Area School story with our community. We have so much to offer students at Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools and we want everyone to know about it.

There is a great quote from Walt Disney, “Do what you do so well that they will want to see it again and bring their friends.” I couldn’t agree more.

Kindergarten Registration

will take place at all district kindergarten locations on

February 21st.
