What an eventful quarter!

We saw off 2013 with the inauguration of the enhanced Terminal at the rechristened Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru and kicked off the New Year 2014 with the inauguration of the stunning Terminal 2 at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai. When the Prime Minister of the country and Civil Aviation Minister, and who’s who of the corporate world commended our eff orts in executing landmark infrastructure projects, it assured us that we are on the right track. The vision and dream of our Founder Chairman and Managing Director Dr. GVK Reddy has come true.

We are now in the fi nal stage of development of our Australian mine, rail and port project ast er having received all major State and Federal Govt. approvals.

My company carries the initials of my name, GVK

that has long since evolved from an identity given

to 3 letters that signify: Vision, Perseverance and

Triumph.

Terminal 2 has been inaugurated by the Hon’ble

Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh

and there is a widespread appreciation for every

aspect such as architecture, design, planning and

implementation. I would personally like to thank

my partners: ACSA, BidVest, Airports Authority of

India, design architects SOM, EPC Partner L&T and

my colleagues who have been part of this journey.

I appreciate my son, Sanjay Reddy for his passion,

dedication and tireless hard work in making my dream

a reality.

It was a moment of pride and achievement as we at GVK inaugurated the new

integrated, state-of-the-art terminal at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at

The impressive, new integrated Terminal 2 is an iconic

mega-structure (measuring 4.4 mn. sq.st .) that will set global

benchmarks in airport infrastructure development. Featuring

a highly compact design by New York based SOM, T2 will

have the ability to handle 40-45 million passengers annually.

Traversing across four-levels, the vertical and compact design

of T2 integrating all operations (International, Domestic,

Cargo, Ground Handling, Security, Retail, etc.) under one

roof enables enhanced passenger servicing and operational

effi ciency at GVK CSIA.

The much awaited inauguration event was attended by over

5000 guests comprising Central and State policy makers,

industrialists, celebrities and media. The Prime Minister

during his inaugural speech lauded GVK for building the

terminal as Mumbai’s new gateway. According to him, the

success of T2 will provide impetus to other PPP projects

which are under implementation or planning stage. The

Prime Minister also believed that T2 will establish new global

benchmarks of functional effi ciencies and operational safety.

Built at a project cost of Rs. 5,500 crore, T2 is the

lowest as compared to similar airport projects in

India as well as across the world. Moreover, T2 has

been constructed in the same location of the already

existing international terminal without shutting down

India’s busiest and land-locked city airport which is the

most constrained airport in the world.

The new T2 is home to India’s largest public art

programme, in the form of a 3 km multi-story Art

Museum, illuminated by skylights, that has over 7000

pieces of artwork and artefacts from Maharashtra

and also every region and corner of India. Titled

‘Jaya He’ (Glory to India), it captures the expanse, depth

and beauty of Indian art, crast and cultural heritage,

beyond and convey a distinctive narrative of India’s

incredible diversity, living in multiple centuries

Once inside, travellers enter the warm, open, light-

fi lled and monumentally large check-in hall, featuring

188 + 20 check-in counters, sheltered underneath

the 11-acre long-span roof, supported by an

array of only 30 mushrooming multi-story mega-

was the Jet Airways 9W118 to London Heathrow.

During the last few weeks since its inauguration,

the terminal underwent a comprehensive security

sweep and the fi nal stages of ORAT (Operational

Readiness Activation and Transition). As part of this,

GVK MIAL undertook the familiarization processes

for airlines, ground handling staff , security, customs,

immigration and MIAL employees. This enabled

them to get acquainted with the terminal building,

new technologically advanced systems, facilities and

processes, for smooth and seamless transition from

the old terminal to the new integrated T2.

with light, whose constellation of colours makes

reference to The Peacock, India’s National bird, and

the inspiration for the airport. Ast er check-in, 60

emigration counters, 124 security check positions,

41 travellators, 47 escalators and 73 elevators will

effi ciently and swist ly ensure the boarding process.

In the immigration hall, a shimmering ‘Diya’ wall

represents Indian traditions. The luminous screen

consists of aluminium extrusions with raindrop-

shaped cutouts.

Reaffi rming Mumbai’s status as a global economic

city, Terminal 2 is the outcome of our company’s

vision to make CSIA one of the world’s best airports

that consistently delights consumers, and being the

pride of Mumbai and India.

Reiterating this, our Managing Director,

Mr. G V Sanjay Reddy said “The new Terminal 2 at

GVK CSIA is a monument to the beautiful spirit of

Mumbai and its people. This terminal will make GVK

CSIA a gateway to the city of Mumbai and India

with international and domestic passengers. This

A walk along ‘Jaya He’ - GVK Art Museum

The Art Programme titled ‘Jaya He’ at GVK CSIA’s

Terminal 2 is a distinctive narrative of India’s incredible

diversity, living in multiple centuries simultaneously.

The concept of the Art Programme was articulated

in 2009 from GVK’s vision of T2: An airport that can

compete with any global equivalent while retaining a

sense of place and identity, an airport that celebrates

India.

Mr. Rajeev Sethi, one of South Asia’s leading curators and scenographers has successfully translated this artistic vision within the terminal by designing and creating India’s largest Public Art Programme. The Art Programme encompasses original art treasures sourced from various regions of the country, specially commissioned works by master crast smen working within traditional idioms, as well as artists and designers exploring contemporary visual languages and media. Approximately 7000 exquisite ethnographic objects have been sourced exclusively for the Art Programme. The artefacts belong to diff erent centuries and those that are as old as 200 years have been taken special care of with the help of a team from Heritage Conservation Agency that carried out the conservation and restoration work.

The international departure area which is a key commercial zone is an elegant planning solution that balances circulation, seating and shopping needs in a unique Indian inspired format. The ceiling here is inspired by Rangoli, the folk art of India, which represents sacred welcoming areas for Hindu deities and is thought to bring in good luck. The departure lounges are adorned with 2.8 km of ‘Jali’ screens and the ceiling is embellished with 944 hand-crast ed Lotus Chandeliers. These chandeliers, made of hand blown glass, have been designed by celebrated designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla and are testimony to their signature style.

The Art Programme is conceived as two distinct sections - ‘Layered Narratives’ at The arrivals corridor and ‘Thresholds of India’, a scenography Art Wall spanning a total of 3.3 km stretch of the terminal leading to the boarding lounges.

The ‘Layered Narratives’ explores aspects of Mumbai’s changing landscapes and culture, and the dreams and dynamics of urban India. Refl ecting the fl uid life of the city, many of the works incorporate kinetic elements and interactive technologies or interpret the theme through the lens of Mumbai’s urbanscape. This section features site-specifi c works by many of the country’s most eminent artists

including Gulam Mohammed Sheikh, Amitavada Das, Jagannath Panda and Riyaz Komu.

‘Thresholds of India’ runs symmetrically throughout the terminal on all four levels, forming an immense tableau of India’s cultural legacy, living traditions and contemporary artistic expressions, presented as six thematic compositions viz. ‘India Elemental’, based on the concept of the ‘Panch Mahabhutas’ which states that all things, living or non-living are made of fi ve fundamental elements, space, air, fi re, water and earth associated with the 5 senses; ‘India Seamless’ consists of four installations, showcasing crast s that depict the myths, histories and popular culture of various parts of India; ‘India Greets’, a tableau of doorways, facades and porches sourced from various parts of the country that are replete with symbols depicting hospitality and protection like lotuses, angels, etc.; ‘India’s Silent Sentinels’ is composed of various architectural and sculptural elements that symbolically guard the entrance of a home or a temple like totems, pillars, toranas, deities, guardian fi gures and angels; ‘India Moves’ speaks of modes of transport both ordinary and festive like antique boats, bullock carts while temple chariots and padukas evoke living traditions of deities who travel the earth, bestowing devotees with a glimpse of the divine; and ‘India Global’ represents an India in the making through new forms, materials and ways.

The Art Programme brings together these narrative trails, off ering T2 visitors an opportunity to experience and explore them at will within the airport and hopefully, also beyond.

AWARDS

The new integrated Terminal 2 at GVK Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has been awarded LEED ‘Gold’ Certifi cation from Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for its environmentally sustainable profi le.

T2 has been planned and implemented in an environmentally sensitive and responsible manner. GVK Mumbai International Airport Limited developed a comprehensive strategy to meet the growing demand while mitigating the overall negative impacts on the environment. This was achieved by signifi cantly reducing the energy consumption, GHG emissions and natural resources usage and minimizing the environmental footprint.

Some of the unique features of the new terminal that have contributed are:

T2’s water effi ciency in Air-conditioning System ensures that more than 65% of the STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) treated water volume is derived from the domestic water tank of Aircrast s landing at the airport

Storage & Collection of Recyclable facilities at Terminal 2 ensure proper handling of waste generated at the individual fl oors

A minimum 50% of the wood-based materials and products used for the wood building components at T2 are certifi ed in accordance with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) principles & criteria

The Terminal building is declared as a non-smoking zone

The LEED Certifi cation also takes into account Thermal Comfort Design of the Terminal’s comfort parameters including metabolic rate, clothing insulation, equipment load, lighting load, etc., demonstrating credit compliance. The Terminal’s Innovation in Design has also been a contributing factor to its LEED Gold ranking

GVK’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) was awarded for its energy-effi cient, eco-friendly, sustainable terminal building and development practices.

The existing operating airport building was rated ‘Silver’ by LEED in 2012 by USGBC (US Green Building Council) for its sustainable operations and maintenance practices, and the new terminal building facility has been awarded the next highest ‘Gold’ rating, a recognition of substantially enhanced green practices.

With over 100 acres of green cover, 135 distinct varieties of indigenous trees, plants and shrubs and a hundred thousand square meters of lawn, the revamped KIA fl aunts a spectacular landscape. It is also technologically progressive with a well-equipped climate control green house for indoor plants, a 5 acre plant nursery, open space for warehousing facility and a decentralized automatic irrigation system.

The airport has demonstrated a very high level of environmental commitment to cross this signifi cant milestone. Some of the unique features are:

20% reduction in energy consumption without compromise in passengers’ comfort

Abundant natural lighting

40% water reduction without any compromise on health of occupants

Extensive rain water harvesting

Green maintenance measures for up-keep of equipment for sustenance

100% reuse of sludge as bio-fertilizers

First airport to use bio-fuel

These features are part of GVK KIA’s commitment towards being a responsible entity, sensitive to the environment and community. The green cover has been carefully selected to include plants and trees indigenous to the region. In fact, the new facilities have been designed to create the eff ect of an airport in a garden, a perfect tribute to the Garden City, which it serves.

Award under the Corporate Commitment to Art category for

its magnifi cent Art Museum at GVK CSIA T2. The conversion

of 4.4 mn sq. st . of space at GVK CSIA Terminal 2 into a large

installation of art work of diff erent mediums ornamenting it

is truly a delightful experience for the travellers. Some of the

other esteemed winners in diff erent categories include Google

Art Project under Art Initiative of the Year category; Christie’s

India under Auction of the Year category; Kochi Muziris

Biennale under Special Commendations category, etc.

GVK receives Forbes India Art Award

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally-recognized green building certifi cation system that provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.


The inaugural event saw a wonderful dance performance by

the troupe, ‘Nritarutya’, refl ecting Karnataka’s rich heritage and

culture. The formal ceremony began with a fi lm about the city.

The airport had opened itself to suggestions and ideas in 2009

when it embarked on the Terminal Expansion programme. Weeks

before this grand launch, Bangaloreans experienced a fi rst-of-

its-kind preview of the airport with its new features, services and

facilities through vehicles fi tted with state-of-the-art Glasstrons

and Photoboxi that travelled across the city. The event concluded

with the unveiling of the plaque to mark the rechristening of the

airport and inauguration of the new Terminal.

GVK KIA, Bengaluru opened its enhanced design and elevated

infrastructure and facilities to passengers in February 2014. The

departure of Jet Airways fl ight 418 to Mumbai and arrival of the

fl ight EK 566 from Dubai at 1840 IST marked this signifi cant

achievement.

Bengaluru International Airport has been rechristened as Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru in honour of the founding father of the city. The new name and the Terminal are symbolic of the new and progressive face of India to the world.

An icon for the citizens, Kempegowda laid the stage for the development of the entire region. He planned and built the city of Bengaluru and is noted for his societal reforms and contribution towards building temples and water reservoirs.

of hard work, commitment and dedication by the team at GVK

KIA for constructing a terminal while being fully operational.

The enhanced terminal design and world-class facilities truly

epitomize the culture of the city of Bengaluru. The airport not

only refl ects the city’s dreams but also the culture, ethos and

landscape of the state of Karnataka. It refl ects the city’s stature

of being the ‘Garden City’ with the beautiful landscaping that

has been done inside and outside the terminal building. It refl ects

the vision of GVK KIA in creating a destination that represents

the varied cultural and artistic elements of South India. Inspired

by a smile, the entire design has been created keeping in mind

a delightful experience for the huge spectrum of passengers

who would use the airport. With double the existing area, it is

equipped with world-class technology and facility to host some

of the largest aircrast s and elevate passengers’ travel experience.

The new infrastructure is built on the existing facility’s effi cient

and passenger-friendly design, while incorporating regional

elements.

SPECIAL FOCUSSPECIAL FOCUS

The design of the Terminal takes into account existing core

strengths i.e. short walkways, ease and convenience of usage,

linear fl ow and fl exible design. The renovated Terminal provides

more check-in counters, allowing travellers to pass through the

processes much faster; easier and better access to seating

areas, amenities and commercial facilities; a large security hold

area and more aerobridges.

The enhanced Terminal epitomizes the technological prowess

of Bengaluru. Apart from a new VIP Terminal that befi ts the

prominent personalities who visit the city and state frequently,

the city is now ready to welcome large aircrast s such as the

Airbus A380 through a new Code F contact stand. A new,

high-tech AOCC (Airport Operations Control Centre), serves

as the nerve-centre of the airport and helps both airlines and

concessionaires to streamline processes. This ensures smart

decision-making and faster turnaround making the operations as

well as travel through the airport more effi cient and economical

for passengers. The Terminal will have 26 boarding gates, 15

aerobridges and 15 Code C /Code E, and 1 Code F contact stands.

The Terminal’s architecture embraces the landscape theme

and complements it with art installations at strategic locations

demonstrating elements of Mysore painting and relief works,

which are emblematic of Karnataka art. The Sampige fl ower’s

vivid colour is an inspiration for the Terminal’s design and a

recurring theme, aimed at creating a lasting impression on the

traveller. South India permeates through the infrastructure, with

specially commissioned artworks by renowned artists such as

Yusuf Arakkal, Jatin Das, Siddartha Das and Satish Gupta.

F&B and retail concepts will provide a new platform for local

cuisines, art-forms and over 500 artisans whose products –

from Channapatna toys to Bidriware and Mysore silks – will be

available. The enhanced Terminal will have new smoking lounges

at the Domestic & International pre-embarkation area besides a

prayer room and spa. Service additions also include new lounges

and a day hotel.

With the vision of creating an ‘Airport in a Garden’, over 100

acres has been landscaped to refl ect the essence of the city as

a green zone. The airport’s green practices make this LEED Gold

certifi ed infrastructure one of India’s most eco-friendly facilities.

GVK KIA is set to handle 20 million passengers per year. The

master plan ensures that the size and capacity of the airport’s

facilities are in line with passenger traffi c forecast and projected

cargo growth.

Please tell us something about your educational backgroundI have done my schooling from Hyderabad Public School, Hyderabad and then Loyola College, Vijayawada. Thereast er, I pursued B.Sc. Hons. in Geology from New Science College, Hyderabad. I strongly feel that education plays a very important role in shaping up an individual’s personality.

Please share your early work experience Soon ast er completing my degree, I moved into construction business wherein we were involved in excavation of hydro projects like Lower Sileru Power House, Sileru river stage and Balimela Dam. Then, I joined Balaji Group where I served as Managing Director and CEO for various businesses like Steel manufacturing, Distilleries, Sugar, Bottling facility, Cargo liners, Real Estate and Biotech. Balaji Biotech had Asia’s largest farm, two hatcheries and processing plant. They exported shrimps to top-end hotels in USA. We were also involved in movie production and distribution business through the company Kalyani Films.

When did your association with GVK begin?It all began in 2002 when our Founder Chairman and Managing Director Dr. GVK Reddy invited me to take charge of the construction of Jaipur-Kishangarh Expressway project in Rajasthan. Initially, I was a bit doubtful as I did not have any prior experience of working in the roads sector. But, it was his faith in my administration and management skills that really motivated me to take it up as a challenge. And, we did remarkably well; the project was completed 6 months ahead of schedule and the cost incurred was well within the stipulated budget. This was the fi rst privately operated six-lane expressway road project in India and it

earned laurels for GVK during its inauguration by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Given the current state of the Power sector in India, you have directed some of the most challenging Hydro and Thermal projects at GVK. Please share your experience working on these projects.

Implementing infrastructural projects of national signifi cance come with their own share of economic, social and political challenges and the current power and energy scenario in the country has only added on to the task. Despite the challenges, we have steered through various issues and are progressing quite well on our projects. For example, various stakeholders in the State were taken on board before commencing work on Shrinagar HEP. The local population also supported the project as it generates employment opportunities for them. The Uttarakhand catastrophe caused some damage to our project but we never gave up. With proper planning and determination and hard-work of our employees, we were able to carry out restoration works and today, we are well placed and look forward to the commissioning of the plant.

I feel listening to the people directly aff ected by the situation and then working together towards fi nding a solution really helps you connect with them. Once when I visited the Ratle HEP site, I was carrying chocolates which I gave to some children. Later, a few more villagers came and when I mentioned about

His enriched experience and remarkable achievements make him an invaluable asset for GVK. We now bring to you an interesting tête-à-tête with Mr. PVP Reddy, on his journey so far.

setting up a project in that village, the only request they made was to impart relevant training so that they may become employed in the project too. And that is what we did. At the Tokisud site too, our R&R works as well as the railway siding works are progressing well.

Driving such huge infrastructure projects seems very intriguing. Did being involved in some major political events during your early days help you evolve as an administrator? I feel when you have worked on diff erent projects over a period of time, every project teaches you something new because of the challenges that come along with it and certainly this evolves you as a person. I love to get directly involved with the people and work for them. I contested elections during turbulent times, with a strong anti-Congress wave, when even the then CM lost the election. We also successfully organized AICC (All India Congress Committee) session at Tirupati in 1992 which attracted over 2 lakh people and were recognised by the then PM Shri PV Narsimha Rao.

In the constituency of Ongole, I was supporting the leadership in district meetings. We worked towards community development like providing drinking water facilities, setting up schools, junior colleges and degree colleges. We also launched the fi rst coloured Telugu paper, Udayan, which had 23 editions and 4.5 lakh print run.

Please share your experience of working with Dr. GVK Reddy.I have been really fortunate to have such long association with Dr. GVK Reddy. He is a visionary whose strong leadership skills and in-depth knowledge of the subject have contributed towards the cause of nation building. Initially, when he invited me to drive some of the projects at GVK, I had the option to run my own business and simultaneously be involved in politics. But I chose to associate with GVK as I really believed in Dr. Reddy’s vision and wanted to achieve results for the responsibilities that I was given.

What motivates me is the appreciation that comes from him ast er successfully driving challenging projects. One of the most remarkable feats for us has been to get our projects launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of our country. Dr. Manmohan Singh laid the Foundation Stone for Goindwal Sahib TPP and the Ratle HEP. Also, the Jaipur-Kishangarh Expressway and the Terminal 2 at GVK CSIA were inaugurated by him. He lauded GVK for its signifi cant contribution towards the infrastructural development that would help push the economic growth of the nation.

Please share your experience working with other key stakeholders at GVK?Besides Dr. GVK Reddy, I was also close to Mr. Som Bhupal. A

warm and gratifying personality, Mr. Bhupal was a people’s person and was very popular amongst his employees. Known as a man of ‘Few Words’, he had an eye for details. His strong business acumen driven by his penchant for numbers has greatly contributed in drawing a road map to drive the organization’s objectives. We look forward to accomplishing his vision for the growth of this group with successful implementation of every project that we undertake.

Like his father, Mr. G V Sanjay Reddy is very passionate about the projects that he takes on and leads them till the end. His grit and determination have anchored some very challenging projects like the Terminal 2 at CSIA which is already creating ripples across the global aviation industry as well as the Australian coal projects in Queensland which are set to develop as the world’s largest integrated thermal coal mining operation.

Mr. Krishna Bhupal brings in a fresh infusion of ideas and is directing some very tough infrastructure projects enthusiastically, especially at times when the country’s power and energy scenario is quite strained.

I am fortunate to work with three generations of promoters. The passion and the hard work of the promoters which percolates down, helps GVK overcome challenges and set infrastructure landmarks with every successive endeavour.

What are your personal interests?I like reading when time permits. I love non vegetarian food; dry meat and fi sh are some of my favourites. I am fond of sports, especially cricket. I have also played Basketball

at University level and have served as President for Body Builder Association.

What message would you like to give to the youth of today?Today’s students are tomorrow’s nation builders.

There is no substitute for hard work.

AUSTRALIA NEWS

The Australian Coal operations have crossed signifi cant milestones that would help further our Galilee Basin coal projects and associated infrastructure along the path towards reaching Financial Close and are at a point where construction can commence.

These coal projects comprise Alpha, Alpha West and Kevin’s Corner coal projects in Central Queensland and associated infrastructure including a rail solution connecting the Galilee Basin to a new coal terminal (T3) at the existing Abbot Point Coal Port.

When combined, these projects will create one of the largest coal mining operations in the world holding total resources of about 8 billion tonne of high quality thermal coal and will achieve a peak capacity of around 80 million tonne per annum for around 30 years.

The great news for the GVK’s Australian coal projects began in November 2013 with the Federal Government’s decision to grant approval of its Kevin’s Corner Project under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999).

This Federal environmental approval followed Queensland Government’s environmental clearance in May 2013 and a thorough and rigorous assessment process by both levels of government spanning fi ve years.

The great news continued further with the announcement that GVK Hancock and Aurizon had reached a signifi cant milestone towards their proposed transaction to jointly develop a rail solution and a new coal terminal at the existing Abbot Point Port to unlock the Galilee Basin’s coal reserves. This signifi cant development included alignment on a rail solution and on the commercial terms for the proposed transaction such as governance, timing of milestones, funding and conditions for completion.

This will enable a phased development of rail line and the Abbot Point T3 terminal to match volumes and ramp-up,

thereby materially reducing the initial cost of infrastructure. The proposed open-access rail and port infrastructure also has the capacity to facilitate a staged consolidation of tonnes from multiple miners in the Galilee and the Bowen Basins.

The fi nal piece of good news for 2013 arrived in December with GVK receiving its fi nal Ministerial environmental approval for its Australian projects with the Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt granting approval for its proposed capital dredging programme at Abbot Point Port.

This approval, together with other approvals for the Alpha mine, the rail to Abbot Point, and the EPBC Act approval for the port, now solidifi es our leading position in the Galilee Basin across mine, rail and port. Receiving the last of our environmental approvals represents the culmination of over seven years of the most comprehensive and rigorous environmental assessment process.

The Galilee Basin coal projects will provide direct and indirect employment to around 7,000 people during construction and direct and indirect employment to around 20,000 people once operational throughout the region, state and the nation. These projects would enable the provision of billions of tonnes of high quality, low sulphur, low ash and cleaner burning coal for Asian consumption.

GVK Jaipur Expressway Project Limited (GJEPL) celebrated

‘Safety Week’, to enhance road awareness among the general

public. As part of the programme, GJEPL distributed pamphlets

and booklets to the road users. The Drive Safe booklet includes

road safety measures such as wearing

helmets and seatbelts, avoiding use of

cell phone while driving, avoiding drunk

driving, and compliance to traffi c rules.

It also explains the sign boards and road

rules for highway driving, apart from

the measures to be taken in case of an

accident.

GVK has appointed Mr. Darren Yeates as the Chief Executive Offi cer for its Australian operations. He has served as Chief Operating Offi cer and Acting CEO for Rio Tinto Coal Australia, and brings over 30 years’ experience in coal mining operations, mine infrastructure and resource sector industries. As per the Jharkhand Rehabilitation & Resettlement Policy 2008, GVK has

extended support by providing employment benefi ts and housing facilities to

the Project Aff ected Families (PAFs) whose lands are being acquired for the

development of the project. Presently, GVK Coal (Tokisud) has off ered a one-

time lump sum amount of Rs. 10, 00,000 to 20 out of 63 PAFs as a settlement

in lieu of employment off ered by the Company.

If any PAF does not wish to occupy the constructed house in resettlement

area or desires to relocate elsewhere, the family is entitled to receive a one-

time fi nancial assistance of Rs. 3,00,000. However, GVK has off ered enhanced

fi nancial assistance of Rs. 5,50,000 in the

interest of PAFs. The fi rst instalment of this

amount has been given to 109 PAFs out of 151

PAFs who have consented for the same. GVK has

also extended an additional fi nancial support of

Rs.15,000 as transportation charges towards

shist ing building materials, household goods, etc.

As part of its CSR initiatives, GVK BIO donated a passenger list

to Sri Vidya Vihar School, Ghatkesar that would aid children and

elderly staff members in the school. The facility was inaugurated

by Mr. R Kiran Kumar – President, Inogent, a GVK BIO company.

The school provides education to children from nearby villages

at a nominal fee and free education to underprivileged children.

It also provides accommodation to some of the students and

elderly faculty members in the school premises.

In a signifi cant development, GVK BIO, Asia’s leading Contract Research

GVK CSIA’s Horticulture team has taken up several initiatives towards

conservation of forests. Some of the activities include planting fruit

bearing trees and reviving water sources for wildlife, regenerating

the SGNP (Sanjay Gandhi National Park) thinned forest by planting

over 8000 trees, beautifying the forest guest houses with ornamental

In its eff ort to assure women empowerment, GVK EMRI has launched 181 – Abhayam Women helpline in Gujarat in association

with Gujarat Government. The 24x7 helpline, 181, is a toll-free number to support women in distress and is accessible through

any mobile or landline. Any woman can access 181 “Abhayam” helpline for counseling, guidance, information and also for rescue

in various threatening situations including domestic violence. The helpline has been launched in collaboration with the home

and women and child welfare departments and will be synchronized with the existing “1091 - Gujarat Police Helpline” and other

women-oriented services.

HYDRO POWER

Hydro power is a clean and economical source of energy that has great potential to bridge the gap between energy demand and supply in India while slowing down the rising greenhouse gas emissions. Harnessing the country’s hydro power potential is indispensable to reduce India’s dependence on fossil fuels. Hydro power is a reliable and cost-effi cient source of renewable energy and can be used either to cover base load or peak demand.

As of now, Hydel power is the second largest contributor to India’s total energy generation. Despite initial obstructions such as high construction costs, rehabilitation and resettlement issues and opposition by pro-environmentalists, hydro power projects have a very high effi ciency of more than 90% and low operational and maintenance costs once commissioned.

It is interesting to note that contribution of hydro power in total power generation in some countries is very high. For instance, it is 99% in Norway, 84% in Brazil, 74% in Venezuela, 59% in Canada and 49% in Sweden. However, in India, hydel power accounts to only 18%. This form of energy has received least priority as compared to thermal projects despite being the most effi cient and economical energy source.

Moreover, the power supply position of India is deteriorating due to lack of fuel, poor policy implementation and ineffi cient hydro-thermal mix. It is imperative that a 40-60 mix of hydro, thermal and other sources of energy is maintained to have a satisfactory and sustainable power supply position. But, at the end of the eleventh fi ve year plan, this mix was a 21-70, creating an imbalance in power management. ‘Run of the river’ (ROR)

projects, without much interference with natural silt movement down the river, are essential to meet India’s energy demand.

Uttarakhand catastropheScientists fear that the calamity in Uttarakhand a few months ago is a precursor to bigger and more destructive fl oods. Therefore, more storage projects should be taken up in the Himalayan region to avoid such disasters in future.

The Hydro power projects could not have contributed to the Uttarakhand catastrophe in anyway. Torrential rains and unplanned constructions led to the tragedy. The unseasonal rainfall caused the water level to rise in the rivers and the cloud burst triggered a sudden increase in water level. Moreover, large amount of debris generated by road construction and unplanned disposal of the same on the hill slopes caused fl owing of muck into the river bed and raising of the river bed.

Besides rainfall, huge quantity of water was released into the river from melting of ice and glaciers due to high temperatures during the months of May and June. Also, non-execution of the Catchment Area Treatment (CAT) plan, deforestation and uncontrolled movement of AC tourist vehicles in the region had led to the disaster.

In fact Hydro Projects and Storage Dams are proving to be saviours for the downstream population; for instance, the Bhakra Dam, which today generates India’s cheapest power at 22 paise per unit, saved lives and property in India and Pakistan during fl oods in 2000 and

absorbed unprecedented quantity of fl ood waters this year as well.

In the same way, the Tehri Hydro Project absorbed the excess discharge in the Bhagirathi and helped in saving towns of Rishikesh and Haridwar located downstream. Similarly, GVK’s Shrinagar HEP also obstructed heavy amounts of

silt and debris that were carried by the Alaknanda River during fl oods which would have otherwise swept the entire town of Shrinagar located downstream.

Also all the storage type projects in India have served multiple purposes and worked effi ciently. Right blend of storage dams with run-of-the-river (ROR) projects in each basin can mitigate the fl ood fury.

Construction of hydro power projects in a planned manner is unlikely to interfere with the stability of the Himalayas which not only have the maximum water potential but are also the most unexploited hydro power potential regions in the country. The development of storage type of projects in upper Himalayan region can be carried out in a sustainable manner so as to avoid such catastrophes in future for the downstream populace.

INAE is a prestigious organization comprising India’s most distinguished Engineers and technologists. One of them is the former President of India, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam.

Fitness Mantra @ Work

Given our ‘chase n haste’ kind of lifestyles, we seldom give

time to ourselves and our bodies to refresh and rejuvenate.

But, we all must agree that at least half an hour of any form

of exercise is crucial to sustain our present work patterns and

keep health problems at bay. So, let’s fi t in some easy fi xes in

our routine and try some stretches and exercises while we’re

at work.

Flex to improve your refl ex- While sitting, turn your face up at the ceiling and then take

your chin towards the chest. Repeat eight times, slowly

- Turn your face to the lest and then towards the right. Repeat

at least eight times, slowly

- Rotate your shoulders from front to back 10 times and then

from back to front. List the shoulders as high as possible

each time

- Stand up, interlock your fi ngers and stretch both arms

above your head. Go up on your toes as you do this. Hold for

at least a minute and feel a good stretch in your whole body

- Stand from a sitting position as ost en as you can. Do not take the support of your arms as you do this. This exercise

is similar to the squats which help strengthen all muscles of the lower body

- Sit away from the backrest of your chair for at least a couple of hours during the day. This will strengthen the posture

muscles in the back. Also, maintain good posture while you do this and don’t slouch

These exercises will at least keep you away from aches and pain and help you stay active throughout the day.

Tips for a healthier lifestyle- Never skip breakfast. It is the

most important meal of the day

- Take the staircase whenever

possible

- Do your own fetch-and-carry jobs

- Stand up periodically (at least fi ve

circulation and eliminates wastes from the system

- Laugh – Laughing loudly for at least ten minutes every day

can heal some serious diseases like stress, indigestion,

insomnia, depression, etc.

everything. Our strong faith and hope can defeat any

Coverage on project updates is motivating. The magazine can
