WHO WE ARE

08 13MARINE CORPS COMMUNITY SERVICES // IWAKUNI, JAPAN

I’d like to extend my sincere appreciation to all our MCCS staf f, Air Station and JMSDF personnel who made this year’s Friendship Day a success. The teamwork witnessed from all areas of the station was truly remarkable. Although, the footprint for this year’s FD was nearly three times the size of previous years, we still managed to have a flawless event. I would be remiss without a special shout out to Major Rober t Carlson, who put together a true team of professionals and organized this year’s show. We couldn’t do much about the weather, but everyone was flexible enough to execute the necessary changes. For those of you who were able to watch the air show I truly hope you enjoyed yourselves.

June is upon us, which means we are of ficially halfway through 2015 and experiencing the longest days of summer. Japan presents many oppor tunities to get outdoors and experience the beauty of nature. As the days and water continue to warm, please take advantage of our free Rec locker and check out some camping gear. While you’re at it , take along a paddle board, canoe, or one of our Kayaks. You can use the Kayaks in the ocean now af ter completing a cer tification course. There are hundreds of miles of shoreline to explore and many beautiful lakes, so get out there and take advantage of it .

This month also presents the oppor tunity to celebrate the father figures in our lives on June 21. Join us at Club Iwakuni for our Father’s Day Brunch, we are featuring some of our most popular meals including sliced steak with mushroom gravy, and blackened cat fish. Af terward, you can head to Outdoor Rec and check out some fishing gear for a classic day of Father’s Day fishing. Later in the month, Services will host “The Amazing Race”. This event is a lot of fun and features challenges of all sor ts. There will be prizes, food and drinks for everyone who par ticipates. Sign-up begins on June 4th, so grab your friends and family and put together this year’s winning team.

MCCS is here to make 2015 a great year for you, please take advantage of every thing we have to of fer and have a fun-filled, safe summer.

“Semper Fi” John Iwaniec Marine Corps Community Services Director

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

by Hyla Ernst, Community Writer

MY

WHEN TO GO Thailand is a tropical country and it is hot year round. As such, deciding when to go depends on your preferences—hot or less hot, humid or less humid, and whether you want to avoid the rain. The peak travel season for most of Thailand, due to the weather (less humid and almost no rain) and a number of major holidays, is between November and February. It’s our favorite time to visit because of the weather, but the downside to going during high season is that major destinations are more crowded, tours must be booked sooner, and price of hotels and tours are at their highest. Low season, July and August, is generally comprised of rainy afternoons or occasional monsoons. We like low season because it coincides with the American school and college summer vacation, which allows us to take a longer trip and because hotels and resorts often reduce their prices as low as 60-70%. The months that we recommend avoiding are April to June, when all of Thailand is oppressively hot and humid.

WHERE TO GO My recommendation of course is to a take a month and travel all over Thailand, but that’s not always feasible. How many of us can take off for a month? If you have to choose one location, I recommend prioritizing. If you want a tropical getaway, head south. Phuket is very popular and a great jumping point for day trips. My favorite places are Phi Phi Island, Koh Tao, and Krabi. My dream? A dive vacation in the pristine waters around the Similan Islands.

If you want more of a laid-back, cultural experience, head north to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. There you’ll find beautiful vistas, rich heritage, hill tribe villages (look into a homestay program!), and of course—elephants!

Almost everyone who goes to Thailand wants to interact with these gentle giants, and there are plenty of opportunities to do so. My recommendation is to do your research and don’t settle for the cheapest or most convenient elephant camp. Avoid roadside attractions. Thai laws are lax; to the point of almost non-existent; when it comes to animal rights. Domesticated elephants are considered livestock, not protected wildlife, and are routinely subjected to abuse and mistreatment. In Chiang Mai and other cities, there are many elephant sanctuaries and camps that take care of these animals humanely and allow visitors to have meaningful interactions with these amazing creatures. Don’t settle for a 30-minute ride when you can become an elephant caretaker for the day or even a week! Trust me on this one, the experience is so much more rewarding.

Two often overlooked parts of Thailand are the western and northeastern provinces. My favorite destination in the western part of Thailand is Kanchanaburi, home to beautiful waterfalls and the infamous Death Railway featured in the movie “Bridge Over the River Kwai”. At least 180,000 Asians and 60,000 Allied Prisoners of War were forced to construct this railway under Japanese occupation during WWII under brutal conditions. It is estimated that over 100,000 of them died during the construction. The railway and the nearby cemeteries are poignant reminders of the past.

In the far northeastern province of Buriram, one can take in ancient Khmer ruins very similar to the ones in Siem Reap, Cambodia, made famous by the Tomb Raider movies. Many of the ruins are well preserved, the most famous one being the Phanom Rung Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. By the way, Phanom Rung Historical Park is not very far from Korat. It’s a day trip worth taking for those going to Thailand for the Cobra Gold exercise, if liberty policy allows.

Since you’re most likely to arrive in Bangkok, do plan on spending a night or two sightseeing the city—longer if you love to shop! MBK Mall, Siam Square, and Jatujak Weekend Markets each will take at least half a day to walk through. Since I grew up in Bangkok, I don’t spend much of my time

“I’m planning a trip to Thailand—do you have any recommendations?” is a question that I get asked almost weekly by friends and family who know that I’m Thai by birth and have spent the majority of my youth growing up in Thailand. I don’t mind at all, and I feel honored whenever someone wants to know more about one of the countries that I call “home.” So here it is, my short guide to the Land of Smiles.

10 P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N FA C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

Page 13: Preview June 2015

sightseeing in the city but for first time visitors, the Grand Palace, Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun are all worth visiting. Love flowers? Check out the flower market early in the morning. A day trip to nearby ancient city of Ayuttaya is also recommended—it’s about an hour outside of Bangkok.

GETTING THERE From MCAS Iwakuni, there are several ways of getting to Thailand. The easiest and most hassle-free of course is to take a tour, whether through ITT or other travel agencies. Sometimes there are even cruise packages that allow you to visit other SE Asian countries as well. For our family, we usually take a commercial flight (generally around 5-6 hours of travel time, with a layover either in Shanghai, Hong Kong, or Tai Pei). We have found that flights leaving from Fukuoka often have great deals—usually around $300 per person roundtrip. For a family of four, it’s worth the tolls to drive and take advantage of the free parking at the AMC Terminal adjacent to the international terminal at the Fukuoka International Airport. Check with ITT for directions on how to find the AMC parking lot—and be sure to contact the terminal ahead of time to make sure they will be open when you arrive and depart.

My most adventurous way of getting there to date was a trip that combined Space-A flights and a low-cost budget airline. On that trip, the kids and I took a Space-A flight from MCAS Iwakuni to Yokota AFB, spent two days exploring Tokyo, then caught another Space-A flight from Yokota AFB to Paya Lebar Air Base in Singapore. After a couple of days sightseeing in Singapore, we bought inexpensive tickets on Tiger Air to Thailand for about $100 per person roundtrip then repeated the process on the way back. Interested in a Space-A adventure? Space-A Classes are offered regularly aboard MCAS Iwakuni and there is plenty of information online. Space-A.net and Dirk Peppered’s Message Board are the two online resources that I used when I first started taking Space-A trips. As a general rule: always double check with official resources and keep in mind that Space-A flights come with a degree of uncertainty and unpredictability.

WHERE TO STAY Finding a hotel is easy in Thailand. We have found all of ours online and have not had any problems booking online. Hotels are relatively inexpensive compared to other countries, so be prepared to be pleasantly surprised! The breakfast buffet is usually worth adding on, especially at major resorts as these usually offer a wide selection of hot and cold dishes, fresh squeezed juice, and of course—fresh tropical fruits!

GETTING AROUND Taxis are plenty and cheap in Bangkok, but I highly recommend using BTS (the elevated public transport) or the MRT (subway) to cut through most of the city traffic. BTS and MRT maps can be found online and both are very easy to figure out, as signs are in both Thai and English.

WHAT TO EAT Everything! Thai cuisine is famous world-wide for its fresh ingredients and lively flavors. Don’t be hesitant to try street food—just stay away from food that looks like it’s been sitting around for a long time. My favorite street food: grilled meatballs, Pad Thai (made fresh!), fried spring rolls, chive cake dumplings, BBQ chicken (best in the world!!), and these desserts that look like a cross between a crepe and a taco called “Kanom Buang.” If you’re visiting the beaches and islands, make sure to try garlic fried fish (any kind of fish, but barracudas are delicious!) or fried fish with chili sauce. Both are divine!

WHAT TO BRING• Weather appropriate clothing• An Empty Suitcase for shopping • Toiletries including sunscreen, insect repellant, and bug bite itch relief (Thailand has a lot of ants

and mosquitos!).• Personal medication including Imodium, Benadryl, Motrin, Tylenol, etc. Most of the common US

medication can be found in pharmacies (stand alone, inside shopping malls, or at the airport), but I’ve found that it’s a time saver just to have access to my own medication.

• Camera, electronics, and chargers.• Hand Sanitizer. Public restrooms often do not have soap, and hand sanitizer is not always easily

found in stores.• If traveling outside of major cities, bring a roll of toilet paper.

FINAL THOUGHTS I had an amazing childhood in Thailand and have enjoyed many visits since moving to the US and later, to Japan. I still haven’t seen all there is to see in Thailand. The food is fantastic, prices are reasonable, and the Thai peoples are incredibly kind. I’ve been traveling there with our children since our eldest was 8 months old and on every trip, they have had incredible experiences. Everyone from taxi drivers, shopkeepers, servers, to tour guides have gone out of their way to make us them feel welcomed. As with all destinations, exercise necessary caution and use good judgement when traveling to ensure your safety—but do consider Thailand as your next family vacation.

Since living in Iwakuni, I have become

aware of some of the creepiest of

critters. Some I have personally had

encounters with and others I have heard

stories of. These encounters and bits

of information might come in handy

during your time in Iwakuni. Each critter

has been given a Kuni-Critter rating as

to whether or not they are dangerous, by

rating them by my personal opinion on a

1-10 scale with 1 being the least creepy

and 10 being the creepiest.

by Angela Ryberg, Community Writer

CREEPY CR ITTERS OF THE KUNI

Page 21: Preview June 2015

Description: Make you shuddercreepy! Mukade (Mu-ka-de) are giant poisonous centipedes. Usually small, but can get to about 8 in. long (about the length of a piece of paper).

Benefits: Despite these centipedes being tanks to take down, they are beneficial since they like to eat cockroaches and smaller insects.

Dangers: Mukade are venomous and can be painful if bitten. These critters like cozy places and have been known to cuddle with you in bed or even snuggle in your ear. Killing them can be challenging too, even after being exposed to bug spray, fire, and boiling water, they just won’t die! But, be careful killing them as they release phero-mones to alert other Mukade or its partner. Yes, Mukade travel in pairs!

Kuni-Creepy rating: Not only does the Mukade want to snuggle with you, but also won’t let you get away with murder. I think we all can agree that the Mukade gets a high Creepy rating of 9.

A closer look: Mukade like to hide in cozy places like shoes, toilets, and bed linens. Or they can crawl up to you in your sleep or fall down on you at night. Their bite is very painful and if bitten by a large Mukade, it is best to see a doctor. In Japan they are often used as a symbol for evil. They are mostly seen in the rainy season from June to August.

Description: Double take, creepy! Most species are black with golden hues with a yellow abdomen.

Size: Averaging 1-2in., walking into one of these webs will give you moves your friends didn’t know you had.

Benefits: Like most spiders they help keep the bugs at bay. If they are too close for comfort you can always carefully relocate them. They tend to favor large bushes and trees. Just be cautious when venturing around vegetation.

Dangers: The Golden orb weaver can give a painful bite. They are not as venomous as Black Widows, but their toxins can make the bite area red and raised with some bumps. Those with asthma should take extra caution.

Kuni-Creepy rating: Considering the Golden orb weaver has some human benefit and tends to stay away, I think we can meet in the middle at a Kuni-critter rating of 5.

A closer look: The Golden-silk Orb weaver is actually named after the color of it’s silk, not the spider. Studies have come to show the webs silk has yellow/golden tones that reflect the sunlight off the web and make it hard for insects to see it.

Description: The Huntsman spiders are run out of your house screaming big! They move around quickly, similar to that of a crab, which is why they are also called “Giant Crab Spiders”. Some have been found to be as large as a dinner plate. Eek!

Benefits: You might want to reconsider sucking one of these up with a vacuum. If one happens to wander into your house, safely try and guide it outside, as these spiders are beneficial because they eat cockroaches and other small rodents that are popular in the warmer months.

Dangers: Their bite is not deadly to humans, but can be painful and cause some nausea and diz-ziness. Usually not aggressive except when pro-voked or disturbed. Do what you need to remove it from your home, a vacuum may not be the answer.

Kuni-Creepy Rating: The Huntsman spider surely deserves a high rating based on size alone, I think a Kuni-Creepy rating of 8 is fair, yeesh!

A closer look: Huntsman spiders are unlike most spiders that build webs. Instead, they burrow and ambush their prey giving a painful bite with their sharp fangs and injecting venom.

Description: You hear them singing in the trees in the warm months and sometimes find their dried exoskeleton clinging to trees. That creepy looking insect is the bug-eyed Cicada. Averaging about an inch in size they have veiny, clear wings, and two big eyes that sit wide apart with three smaller eyes in between. Each of their eight legs has tiny hooks allowing them to grip the bark of trees they suck the sap.

Benefits: Cicadas offer no benefit to humans but can be damaging to some crops and trees.

Dangers: They are pretty harmless insects, howev-er, their distinct mating song can cause permanent hearing loss if the Cicada is outside one’s ear. I can barely stand them when they are several feet away, let alone close up.

Kuni-Creepy rating: Cicadas are of no real lethal threat but can cause some annoyances. I think a Kuni-creepy rating of a 2 is well deserved.

A closer look: Turns out it’s the males that make all that noise to attract females. Each Cicada has a distinct song and they can control the volume based on its surroundings and mood. All Cicadas have what is called a tymbal on their lower ab-domen. By contracting their muscles the two tym-bals vibrate rapidly protruding the sound through its body, which are hollow and help amplify the sound. Cicadas are one of the loudest of insects producing sound up to 120dB. I thought my kids were loud.

Description: Similar to a raccoon, they are furry and dark in color. About the size of a medium dog, averaging 20lbs.

Benefits: Tanukis are scavengers and omnivores, so they eat fish, clams, frogs, insects, berries, plants, and your trash.

Dangers: Tanukis are quick, have been known to rummage through garbage, and are seen running around base from time to time. They can carry diseases, so it’s best not to get close. They are not aggressive and pretty easy to miss.

Kuni-Creepy rating: These scruffy-looking dog like raccoons seem to be pretty harmless and more of a symbol in the Japanese culture than anything else. Your chances of seeing one as a statue car-rying a sake bottle are better then seeing one in real life. I think a nice Kuni-Critter rating of a 2 seems fitting.

A closer look: Tanuki legends go back to Japanese ancient times of folklore known for being a mis-chievous shape shifter. Many stories and symbols have been derived from the Tanuki and are most commonly seen as statues and art.

Description: Oh, that’s just a bee. Wait! That’s a GIANT bee!!! At almost 2 in. long with a wingspan of almost 2.5 inches, this sucker is bound to get your attention. With its large yellow head, dark thorax, striped brown and yellow abdomen and three eyes, it attacks its prey by beheading, this hornet is high on the creepy scale!

Benefits: Frankly, they don’t offer any benefits to us, except if you’re willing to try the Japanese vodka-like drink called shouchuu made by fermenting these hornets, that is supposed to bring life and longevity.

Dangers: The Giant hornet can be aggressive if provoked and has a quarter-inch long stinger that can pump out venom which contains an en-zyme so strong that it can dissolve human tissue. Treatment should be sought out immediately after being stung, as it is a leading cause of death by animals in Japan.

Kuni-Creepy rating: Based on the fact that these hornets behead their prey and sting can dissolve human flesh, um-yeah! Kuni–creepy rating of a 10 for sure.

A closer look: These voracious predators attack, behead, and dismember their prey. Their main targets are honeybees. Once they find a hive they leave a pheromone to signal other hornets to kill the entire hive and carry their bodies to their nest to feed their young. One hornet can kill 40 bees in one minute. That’s just creepy!

Description: A venomous pit viper species com-monly found in Japan. Mamushi bodies are mostly pale-gray with irregularly shaped blotches bor-dered with dark brown and light in the center. Their head is triangular and dark brown or black with pale-gray sides. Younger Mamushi tends to have more hues of red. Mamushi can grow be-tween 45-81cm in length and are found mostly near farmland, since it favors rodents.

Benefits: Since Mamushi eat rodents they are a ne-cessity so it’s kind of hard to completely wish them away. I’d rather take my chances then be overrun with mice. That’s just one perspective.

Dangers: Considering Iwakuni and most of Japan are cultivated, encounters with the Mamushi are frequent. Every year about 2,000-3,000 people are bitten and some severe bites have been known to be lethal. Because of their body pattern and color, it allows them to camouflage well in thick vegetation, therefore making them difficult to spot right away.

Kuni-creepy rating: Mamushi’s are no joke! I have not had the pleasure of meeting one yet and I hope I don’t. If you are bitten medical attention should be sought after immediately. Luckily there are anti-venoms available, but prepare for at-least 2-3 month recovery. That’s a long time! I give the Mamushi a Kuni-creepy rating of a solid 10!

A closer look: The Mamushi is the most dangerous snake in Japan. When spotted quietly and quickly re-direct your path. Do not get too close as they can strike half their body length! Pit vipers are an ambush predator and can hunt in areas of poor visibility and low light. Mamushi should not be taken lightly, so be cautious and preventative as you continue to explore Japan.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

By HM2(FMF) Caleb Ellis & HM2(SW/AW) Cal Rastall, Branch Medical Clinic Iwakuni

HOSPITAL CORPSMENThe Hospital Corps is the cornerstone of Navy medicine. Since its inception on June 17, 1898, Hospital Corpsman have responded to the desperate cries of their brothers in arms whether it be on the battlefield, in medical treatment facilities, or aboard our warships.

Hospital Corpsmen, or “Docs,” are the most decorated rating in the Navy. The Hospital Corps legacy includes 22 Medals of Honor, 174 Navy Crosses, 31 Distinguished Service Crosses, 946 Silver Stars, 1,582 Bronze Stars, the namesake of 20 US Navy vessels and countless other acts of altruism.

Established by President William McKinley, Docs have served as the Navy and Marine Corps first line of health care in every major war or conflict since. This versatile rate is present on every platform whether it be on the flight lines, with the Marines, aboard ships, or in submarines, each Corpsman has sworn a Pledge to give care whenever it is needed.

Corpsmen have accompanied Marines across the globe rendering lifesaving care during battles in Tripoli, Saipan, Guadalcanal, Korea, Vietnam, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan as well as caring for Sailors on ships on all seven seas.

One of the most notable Docs was Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class John H. Bradley, who assisted in the second flag-raising on Mount Suribachi at Iwo Jima. Doc Bradley’s son, James, went on to write “Flags of our Fathers” which chronicled the heroism of his father and the five Marines he fought alongside. Iwakuni’s Branch Health Clinic bears the namesake of HM3 Robert M. Casey, a Navy Cross Recipient killed in action in the Quang Nam province of Vietnam.

It is true that many brave Marines would not be alive today without the bravery and valor of so many Hospital Corpsmen coming to their aid when they needed it most. Their efficiency is renowned—out of every 100 servicemen wounded in World War II, 97 were recovered due to the Hospital Corps’ diverse training and quick call to action. Marines throughout the last century have come to know the Hospital Corps’ most fervent calls, “Corpsmen Up!”

Countless others have returned home wounded, and still more bearing mental and emotional scars that they carry for the rest of their lives.

Throughout history, the legacy of the Hospital Corps has been carried like a torch in the darkness, bringing hope into the most hopeless situations in the most austere environments. Regardless of whether you are in a ward ashore or afloat or in the midst of a bullet-swept battlefield, rest assured that there will always be a member of the Hospital Corps waiting for your moment of need; waiting to respond to your desperate cry of

“Doc!”

To honor the last remaining enlisted Corps in the Navy, Hospital Corpsmen celebrate a ball each year. Branch Health Clinic Iwakuni will host their ball on Saturday, June 13 at Club Iwakuni.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

By Richard H. Roth Jr., Asset Protection Supervisor

SHELTER IN PLACEShelter In Place (SIP) is a method of providing protection to the population when a dangerous incident occurs like a hazardous materials accident. Authorities will instruct people to either evacuate the affected area immediately or to SIP. SIP means to move indoors, or remain indoors, until the threat passes.

The reason for the MCCS SIP Program is MCAS Iwakuni is surrounded by industrial, petrochemical and chemical companies. If hazardous materials are accidently released by one of these companies, and evacuation from the area is not advised, it becomes necessary to SIP. If you are inside, remain inside. Head to the nearest SIP room and assist with the SIP process.

EASY MADE SHELTER IN PLACE AT HOME Assembling an SIP Ki t is easy especially if you already have a typhoon, earthquake or emergency evacuation kit prepared. First, have a plan. Sit down and discuss with your family what you will do in case of an SIP emergency. Secondly, identif y a room in your home with the least amount of windows and air vents. The room should have a source of water. Sinks and toilets are great to have especially if you remain SIP for an extended period of time. If the room does not have running water, purchase additional bottled water and perhaps a portable potty system. Add precut plastic. Cut the plastic about 3-4 inches larger than the doors, windows or air inlet vents to be covered. Mark the plastic so it is readily identifiable as to what it covers. Another good idea is to have a land-line for the telephone or computer just in case cell towers and WIFI go down.

Contact MCCS Instal la t ion Protection Officer at 253-4933 for additional information or for any questions.

MY SUGGESTED LIST TO SUPPLY YOUR “ALL HAZARDS KIT”

If you are caught outside, find the nearest building even if it does not have an SIP room. Hazardous materials tend to settle and accumulate in low lying areas so go to the second floor or higher if you can. If you are inside your vehicle – remain inside your vehicle. Do not expose yourself to the hazardous conditions. Turn off the air conditioning and close the windows and air vents. Tune your radio to AFN 1575 for further instructions.

MCCS has 44 dedicated SIP rooms or areas located at various MCCS Activities. Each SIP room is readily identifiable by the SIP placards and as noted on the Emergency Evacuation diagrams. Each SIP room has a SIP Kit which contains at the minimum: directions on how to seal the room; plastic and duct tape; a 1st aid kit; towels; a fire extinguisher and an emergency radio.
