SUPPORTED BY Show looks to deliver yet another record year N o sooner had the gates closed on last year’s Lamma than organisers began the mammoth task of sorting out this year’s show. And they have been busy too, with more than 900 exhibitors booked in along with extensive work to infrastructure, including an additional vehicle entrance off the A1, a new 7,500sq.m hall in the central ring, improved site signage, increased zoning of exhibitors into product groups and dedicated visitor stewards. Lamma event director Rupert Levy says: “Like previous Lamma shows, this year’s will maintain the focus on its traditional core, and you will see new products from some of the leading global machinery manufacturers as you tour the showground. “However, the diversity of products and services on show is staggering and has grown even more this year. “From agronomy to waste handling, from precision farm- ing to construction and across all types of business services and professional advisers, visi- tors to the show [whether from arable, livestock or mixed farms or anyone connected to the industry] will find products and advice matching their require- ments.” At the heart of Lamma has always been the recognition of smaller manufacturers, which often do not have the massive development budgets of large manufacturers, but are not short of innovation. Awards This has led to the further devel- opment of the Lamma Awards, sponsored by Swedish Steel. In a new format for 2014, entrants will be chasing the dream of producing an overall best new product or innovation. This key innovation award will be sub-divided into three additional categories to recog- nise specific contributions to the industry. At the opposite end of the scale, Lamma provides an opp- ortunity to see many of those major launches which appeared just a few months earlier at EIMA, Agromek and Eurotier, for example (see pages 24-28). Visitors can also gain NRoSO and BASiS points by taking part in the Lamma knowledge trail. To register and start the trail, visit the CropTec stand (700) in Hall 7. Lamma event organiser Cliff Preston says: “Several years ago, Lamma was regarded as a good day out for arable farmers from the East of England, but the big increase in visitors with livestock or mixed farming enterprises, as well as construction and amenity contractors from many other parts of the UK, has transformed the show into a ‘must-visit’ event.” NEW HOLLAND COMPETITION Visit the Farmers Guardian and New Holland stands (outdoors on stand B126 and indoors in Hall 6, stand 607) for a chance to win a New Holland T7 Blue Power tractor for one year. Seeding and soil restructuring in one pass

MZURI’S new Rehab Seederis designed to achieve seedplacement accuracycomparable with that of aconventional drill, from amachine which restructuresthe soil, cultivates a tilth, sows the seed andconsolidates behind it in one pass.Seed is placed directly

into clear soil by the Rehab’scombination of a leading discwhich cuts through stubbleand laid surface trash andthe deep cultivating legwhich restructures soil.Consolidation is applied

immediately by the followingpress wheel, so the sowingcoulter – the same design asused on Mzuri’s Pro-Til drill –has a consistent seedbed inwhich to work.Overall seeding depth is

set by the subsoiler, withfine adjustments being madevia the consolidating wheelfollowing the seedingcoulter.

Investing in a Vaderstad Tempo drill has brought renewedenthusiasm for maize growing for one Oxfordshirecontractor and his customers. Geoff Ashcroft reports.

Tempo turns aroundmaize operations

Phil Benson says the Tempo drill has given a new lease of life to his firm’s maize drilling workload.

After the 2013 season,Phil Benson’s maizedrilling workload haddeclined considerably. So much so, he ques-

tioned his own sanity having taken the bold decision to invest ina Vaderstad Tempo F eight-rowdrill to handle only 140 hectares(346 acres) of drilling ahead of the2014 season.

He says: “Where we had oncebeen drilling 1,000 acres, a coupleof difficult seasons with our olddrill had seen the work fall off. Not because growers were reduc-ing their acreages – but becausewe were unable to produce satis-factory results in what were challenging and difficult seedbedconditions.”

But the arrival of a Vaderstadhigh-speed maize drill was to

create something of an unexpect-ed turning point for the maize element of his business.

From Barley Cottage, Thrupp, near Faringdon, Phil Benson Contracting provides most of itsservices to suit the needs of the livestock sector. In addition to anextensive fleet of muck spreaders,11 balers for hay, silage and strawbaling needs, the team also oper-ates a precision chop foragingservice which sees off severalthousand acres of grass, whole-crop and maize silage each season.

His flexible approach to cus-tomers’ requests has also seen thebusiness expand into harvestingmiscanthus energy crops and hehas recently completed maize harvesting for a local anaerobic digestion plant.

But doing so has required addi-

tional investments in equipmentto make his machinery workmuch more efficiently in eachcrop. It is his willingness to adapthis machinery fleet to satisfy thebusiness needs of his customerswhich keeps moving the Bensonbusiness forward.

Competitive“I am not prepared to compro-mise with machinery because weneed to have a competitive edge inall conditions,” he says. “And thatmeans buying the right kit, withthe necessary attachments, head-ers or processors to do the job tothe best of our ability.”

The need to redevelop themaize drilling aspect of the busi-ness meant finding a much bettersolution to that offered by his existing six-row drill.

He needed more coulter pres-sure to ensure seed placement instickier conditions; he wantedmore output to afford growth inthe business, and he sought in-creased seed distribution accuracyto avoid doubles and misses.

And working through a wide variety of soil types from Cotswoldbrash to sands and heavy clays, itwas important good coulter pres-sure could give consistent resultsin as many field conditions as pos-sible. Such criteria led him to takea chance on Vaderstad’s Tempo.

“The Tempo offered almosteverything we needed, with the exception of narrow row spacingto suit one customer’s close-rowmaize crop requirements,” hesays. “And without restrictions onharvesting and header size, wetook the opportunity to step up toan eight-row unit.”

Equipped with fertiliser hopperand micro granule kit, the TempoF features a seed metering systemcapable of planting up to 28 seeds/second – equivalent to an 18kphworking speed.

Pressurised seed transport, called PowerShoot, is said to avoidvariations caused by vibration orsloping ground, and ensures seedis forced from the metering unitto the coulter.

“I like the way the Tempo deliv-ers a positive air blast to force seedfrom the metering unit directlyinto the ground,” he says. “Thismeans no seed bounce, we cantravel at higher speeds and there isless chance of the drill blocking inless than ideal seedbed conditions.”

He also has praise for the high

coulter pressure on offer – up to325kg.“I know we are always going to

get seed into the ground,” he says.“No more leaving seed on the sur-face when a coulter follows awheeling, which was a problemwith our previous tractor-mount-ed drill.”

ReturnHe reports that as word spreadaround about his new drill, cus-tomers started to return.“Germination and establish-

ment has been so good we havepicked up a lot of our lost work,”he says. “And I see our maizeacreage increasing in future.“Most of the time, we are

achieving 98 per cent seed place-ment, but we have also seen 100per cent accuracy on the controlbox. And plant spacing down therows is now much more evenlyspread, which has made crop flowmuch smoother through our Krone Big X 700 forager and 12-row header.”Drilling output is up to

247ha/day (100 acres/day), thanksto the Tempo’s ability to handlehigher forward speeds.

“Our average forward speed is12-14kph, but in ideal conditions,we can drill at up to 18kph,though the drill needs plenty ofpower up front, typically 200-250hp,” he adds. While most of Mr Benson’s

maize drilling had been intoseedbeds which had been previ-ously cultivated, he also directdrilled one field for a customer.“I had a phone call from a

customer who had suffered a waterlogged wheat crop and hewanted to replace it with maize,”he says. “I was prepared to tryand direct drill relying on its highcoulter pressure. He sprayed thefield off in the morning and wedrilled in the afternoon.“The crop which followed was

more than satisfactory and thishas given the confidence to directdrill again, should we need to.”With renewed enthusiasm for

maize drilling, Mr Benson hasalso found a solution to the nar-row row spacing required by onecustomer.

“We have found out by off-set-ting the drill positioning by 50per cent using RTK and auto-tracsteering, we can halve the seedrate then over-drill if needed toplace additional rows betweenthe drill’s standard 75cm rowspacings.”Importantly for Mr Benson,

the Tempo F has halted the decline in maize drilling.“Despite the high cost of the

drill, it does deliver impressive results in poorer seedbed condi-tions, and we also have the abilityto direct drill as a last resort,” hesays.

Shelbourne ReynoldsEngineering (SRE)has a 43-year historyof designing andmanufacturing farm

machinery.The company was formed in

1972 when Keith Shelbournebought the business assets ofheader manufacturer ReynoldsEngineering from WilliamReynolds.  Production was thenmoved from Bedford to the cur-rent site in Stanton, Suffolk.

In 1981 the firm bought a peaharvester business from Matherand Platt, but in 1987 the UKgreen pea viner market shrankdrastically due to increased capacity of new machines andthe SR9000 viner design wassold to specialist FMC.

SRE returned to its core busi-ness of pick-up headers the following year and added oilseedrape swathers to its portfolio.Tractor units were brought-infrom MacDon in Canada, modi-fied to suit UK conditions and fit-ted with a 3.6-metre draperheader designed and built bySRE. Its stripper header was

then launched in the UK inwidths of 3-5m and it fast be-came a ‘must have’ product.

In 1989 the straw burning bancame in and stripper-headersales were decimated, so SRElooked to export markets. At thesame time, the stripper headerwon a Gold medal at the SIMAmachinery show in Paris.

The first stripper headerswere taken to the USA for test-ing and evaluation, and wereused in rice in Australia.

DiversificationBy 1993 the harvesting equip-ment business was performingwell, but the directors realisedthe company was becoming uncomfortably dependant ontwo products.

The decision was taken to di-versify into livestock equipmentto spread the factory workloadand make the company less de-pendent on specific markets.

Powerspread, Fertispread andSpreadall equipment rangeswere bought from ECON, givingthe company muck and fertilis-er products.

In 1994 an engineer was hiredto adapt US technology and de-sign a tub feeder capable ofchopping bales specifically forthe UK market – the result beingthe first Powermix diet feederssold in the UK.

Stripper header sales contin-ued apace in the export markets– leading to the Queen’s Award

for Export – and in 1996 the firmlaunched its widest (8.5m) strip-per header yet in the US.

To satisfy demand in the Unit-ed States, a parts and whole goodsdistribution centre was estab-lished in Colby, Kansas, and aparts manager and additionalsales staff were recruited. In2000, the Powermix was intro-duced to the US, taking the designback to its inspirational home.

Stripper header develop-ments continued, with a new10m header introduced in 2001.

The livestock equipmentrange expanded further in 2004with the acquisition of the

Parmiter name and products including yard scrapers, balehandlers, spring harrows, rotaryslashers, shear grabs/buckets,and post drivers.

RangeManufacturing of Parmiterproducts was integrated into analready busy Stanton factory anda cubicle bedder was also addedto the range in the same year.

Recognising the need for highquality transporters for the increasingly wide and valuablecombine headers in use, SREbought Mekanag in 2004. Pro-duction of the transporters took

place at the old Parmiter factoryin Tisbury, Wiltshire for the re-mainder of the 2004 season be-fore production was transferredto Stanton.

Always with an eye on newmarkets, the company launchedthe Powerblade hedge trimmerrange in 2004. This range hasbeen constantly updated and expanded, adding long reach, ground care and, most recently, variable forward reach machines.

In 2006 The Powermix Pro-fessional Series was launched atthe Dairy Event and has becomethe core product of the UK SREproduct portfolio.

Originally specialisingin marketing innova-tive products connect-ed with grain storage, pellet spreading and

spraying, Martin Lishman’scompany was formed in 1975.Gradually the business devel-

oped a strong position in theagricultural market as a manu-facturer of specialist equipmentfor monitoring and maintainingcrop quality.Martin’s eldest son Gavin, now

chairman and managing direc-tor, joined the company in 1989.Martin Lishman has grown to

include a large range of productswith sales to countries all overthe world, but still with cropstorage, quality control andcompact sprayers at the centreof the company’s focus.Products in the range have

been introduced to the industryin response to the needs and re-quirements of farms in the UKand many other countries. The company is proud its

customers frequently tell themthey ‘always have somethingnew to see’ at its exhibition stalls. This was the inspiration for thecompany’s slogan, ‘MeetingChange with Innovation’.The firm’s best known products

are Pile-Dry Pedestals and Fans, asystem of ventilation ducts andfans which are used to cool anddry grain, pioneered by Martinhimself almost 40 years ago.The grain storage range has

now developed to include build-ing and silo ventilation and wire-

less monitoring and control. BarnOwl Wireless, an internet basedmonitoring and control system, now installed in many large farmsin the UK and overseas has im-proved the efficiency of grainstorage with benefits includingup to 40 per cent energy savings, says the manufacturer.

Re-launchIn the mid-1990s, the firm start-ed building compact sprayers in-house and it was one of thefirst to develop ATV sprayers. Its range has now expanded to

include trailed, tractor mounted, demount and pedestrian sprayerswhich are becoming increasinglypopular in the agricultural andamenity sector.Although most of the business

focuses on products for the agri-cultural industry, the firm alsodistributes ‘environmentallyfriendly’ products. In 2009, it became the UK

distributor for Compost Tea Systems, manufactured by

Growing Solutions Inc in the US.This is a biological soil manage-ment system designed to helpimprove soil and plant heath sus-tainably, suited to all types ofgrowing, it says.Products originally launched

more than 20 years ago have alsobeen reintroduced to the productrange. The latest version of itselectronic potato, the TuberLog,helps potato producers reducelosses due to bruising.Martin Lishman has been ex-

hibiting at large agriculturalevents for many years, includingthe Royal Show and SmithfieldShow, and now attends eventsaround the world. The company was also one of

the first exhibitors at Lamma inthe early 1980s, with MartinLishman himself spending timeon the Lamma committee.Gavin Lishman says: “Lamma

has clearly been a tremendoussuccess, outliving many tradi-tional agricultural shows. “Its roots in the machinery in-

dustry and its base in the mainarable area of the UK have cer-tainly been important, but it isalso critical as it offers its targetaudience with what it wants – itis no frills, free to attend and fo-cused on farmers’ key needs.”

Martin LishmanLivestock equipment contin-ues to be an important part ofthe business with recent updatesto cubicle bedder and Power-spread Pro muck spreaders. But Shelbourne Reynolds will

be forever renowned for its strip-per header and developmentsmatch the ongoing demand forincreased combine capacity. A new generation 12.7m strip-

per header has been successful-ly tested in Australia and the Excel model has shown work ratesin excess of 40 acres per hour.

ExpansionTo transport the massive head-ers efficiently, the company recently introduced new 12mfour-wheel-steering trailers.SRE’s commitment to innova-

tion has also been recognised, with a Queen’s Award for tech-nological achievement in 1999.Turnover is £20 million, of

which, 60 per cent comes fromexports. Sales director NeilSmith, who has been with thecompany 21 years, says the busi-ness has doubled in size in thelast five years, with both arableand livestock sectors growing.Factory expansions and

improvements have been crucialto the company’s success – the

Stanton premises has grownfrom a ‘garden shed’ to sitewhich covers 11,150sq.m andSRE employs 135 people.Mr Smith says: “The product

range works well with the sea-sons and it is important to be asefficient as possible. One chal-lenge as a manufacturer is man-ufacturing skills are hard to findin the UK now.”It seems ironic SRE’s flagship

product is responsible for a tinypercentage of sales in the UK,while it is a significant slice ofthe business overall.“The stripper header is a

niche product which does notreally fit into the UK farmingsystem. But where strippedstraw is required for moistureretention, it has proven popularand we have continued to investin its development with new, wider models.“Other products are undergo-

ing continued evolution with acouple of introductions plannedfor 2015.”Mr Smith says ‘he cannot

remember not exhibiting’ at Lamma, saying: “If we only hadto go to one show it would beLamma. Its low cost format forvisitors and exhibitors alikemake it unique.”

Down to Earth Advice

Stewart Trailers, basedin Aberdeenshire, isowned and managedby husband and wifeJames and Mandy

Stewart, who established thebusiness in 1988.

In the early days they servicedand repaired artic trailers andMr Stewart used this knowledgeof the commercial vehicle indus-try to design its range of agricul-tural trailers.

The first tipping trailer whichthe Stewarts built was a high-speed, 15-tonne capacity unit fit-ted with an air braking system.

Mr Stewart says: “This firsttrailer came as a direct result ofthe launch of the JCB Fastrac. Atthe time there were no trailerson the market suitable to tow behind a Fastrac, so one of ourcustomers asked us to build one.”

Over the years, the Stewartshave continued to specialise inhigh-speed trailers fitted with airbrakes and ABS.

In 1995, Stewart Trailers builtthe factory which is still the com-pany’s manufacturing base today. Since then it has been

extended, with more buildingsadded. In recent years the Stew-arts have built new offices andinstalled two spray paint boothswith ovens.

Since the beginning, the aimhas been to build a high specifi-cation, high quality trailer – theirmarketing tag line is ‘Bigger,Stronger, Tougher’.

DetailQuality and attention to detail isvery important and the firm hassystems to check trailers at eachstage of the manufacturingprocess before they progressthrough the build.

Mrs Stewart says: “We prideourselves in providing a personalservice and there is nothing morerewarding than receiving positivefeedback from our customers.

“We are very fortunate to havea great workforce who take pridein their work. Trailer building isa team effort and every memberof staff plays their part, startingwith salesman Colin Smith whohas been with the company forthe past decade.”

The Stewart team comprises40 employees at the factory, with four full-time office staffworking alongside Mr and MrsStewart.

Trailers are sold UK-widethrough a network of dealers. The company exports to coun-tries as far away as Australia andNew Zealand, although most ofits products go to Norway andEstonia through agents.

Company milestones include2008 when it was awarded a£2.2 million contract to supply

48 specialist livestock shippingcontainers to NorthLink Ferries, used to ship livestock fromOrkney and Shetland to Aberdeen.

It worked closely with farmersand NorthLink to design a con-tainer which meets regulations, ensuring stock are delivered intop-class condition.

Stronger, lighterIn January 2013, Stewart Trail-ers was approved as a licensedmanufacturer to use Hardox inits products. The range’s flag-ship model, the PRO Series PS24 31 H trailer, was launched atthe Lamma the same year.

The body of this trailer ismade of Hardox steel whichdoes not require the support ofposts or floor bearers, giving a

Stewart Trailers

weight saving of about half atonne.

The firm manufactures arange of sizes of PRO Series trail-ers and the models have beenpopular as customers becomemore aware of weight restric-tions for trailers on the road.

Mrs Stewart insists the futureis not all about expanding thecompany as she says this couldlead to it losing its individuality.

Mr Stewart says: “Our aim isto build the best trailer on themarket – plain and simple. Forus it is definitely about qualityrather than quantity.

“In our opinion, Lamma is themain UK machinery show. It iswell-timed, when most farmerscan take a couple of days off andit is at the start of the new seasonwhen people are planning theirmachinery needs for the year.

“Lamma is an important datein our calendar and we use theshow to launch new models andshowcase new ideas.”

To find out how their chosen career paths are progressing, Geoff Ashcroft caught up with two former Lamma scholars pursuing careers as apprentice engineers.

Road to success withLamma scholarships

Lamma scholars in the engineering workshop at Riseholme College.

Dan Gregory

HAVING completed his Lammascholarship, 18-year old DanGregory successfully applied fora job as an apprentice technicianat Case-IH dealership FarmStar, based at Marr, Doncaster. He says: “I have always been

interested in engines and fixingthings up. And taking those firstfew steps through college atRiseholme has made it mucheasier for me to follow mychosen career in engineering.”With his college-gained

qualification offering a helpinghand, Mr Gregory is now into hissecond year of a four-yearapprenticeship scheme withFarmStar. The course affordsone day-a-week back in theclassroom at Riseholme, filling inthe gaps with different types ofmachinery he has yet toencounter in his job.“Working with FarmStar

brings huge responsibility andhuge variety,” he says. “No twodays are the same.”The contractor’s son from

Sheffield always knew a careerin agricultural engineering was

at the top of his wish-list.“I had spent enough time helping

out at Dad’s contracting businessthat I knew 15-hour days in the cabwere just not for me. I love theindustry, but my interests wereproblem-solving, trouble-shootingand fixing things. “My job satisfaction is enormous

as it gives me a sense ofachievement and a lot of pride.”

ConfidenceAfter an initial six-month period of being workshop-based, MrGregory’s confidence and level ofcompetence was enough to earnhim his own van. With it came theresponsibility of making on-farmvisits to carry out servicing andrepairs for customers. For his employer, workshop

manager and company directorShaun Husler, the importance ofapprentices for the businesscannot be underestimated.Mr Husler says: “I have two

choices – poach technicians fromother business or develop talent. And with four apprenticesemployed at Marr, I prefer to invest

in people and grow talent within thebusiness.“This investment includes paying

proper wages, even when theyhave a day at college. Working atFarmStar can be a job for life forengineers willing to commit.”With four depots and about 70

full-time staff, FarmStar, like manybusinesses, deals with a turnoverof staff. Despite advertisingregularly, Mr Husler says it can bedifficult to attract the right calibreof people into the business.“Taking on apprentices has

proved a great way to select

employees,” he says. “It affordsa planned approach tomaintaining workshop stabilityand to find individuals with theirown skill sets. This gives us adiverse team of technicians.“Farming demands long hours.

I expect staff to put in lots ofover-time and long hours, particularly through harvest.“Our apprentices shadow

others throughout their earlycareer, but if they are capable, why hold them back? I wantthem to progress and to be thebest they can possibly be.”

Ryan Farrent

RYAN Farrent spent weekendsand school holidays workingwith his father, a farm managerfor poultry producer F. and H.Panton Bros, based at EastKirkby, Lincolnshire. As a result, it gave him an

insight into the business whichproved instrumental in himtaking up an engineeringapprenticeship. After achievingNVQ levels one and two atRiseholme, his potential wasspotted and it was suggestedthe business took him on as anapprentice technician. He is now in the first year

of his apprenticeship workingalongside mentor AndyCouchman, the farm’smechanical manager, returningto college one day-a-week forsupplementary coursework.Mr Farrent says: “I have

been given a great opportunityto develop electro-mechanicalengineering skills to look afterall aspects of the poultrybusiness.”

ResponsibilityIn addition to tractor andequipment servicing, his rolealongside Mr Couchmanincludes responsibility forcomputer-controlled feeding, drinking, heating andventilation systems andstandby gen-sets across thebusiness’s five farms, whichproduce 1.6 million birds on asix-week cycle.

Mr Farrent says: “While thepaperwork can be challenging, variety within the businessmeans every day presentsdifferent opportunities andchallenges.”For office manager Leony

Panton, the role of apprenticeswithin the business is anincreasingly important aspectof business development. She says: “It can be a

struggle to find the right calibreof people to join our business,so it seems logical to offerbespoke apprenticeships tofind the skills our businessneeds. It is not just technicianswe need, but apprenticeelectricians too.”

Left to right: office manager Leony Panton, apprenticetechnician Ryan Farrent and mentor Andy Couchman.
