01The new Renault Mégane: dynamic styling and a raft of technologies

Dynamic styling and a distinctive lighting signatureA solid stance and sculpted body formsThe new Mégane’s dynamic stance is founded on well-balanced proportions. It is 64mm longer (4,359mm) and 25mm lower (1,447mm) than the third-generation Mégane. It has wider tracks (front: 1,591mm, +47mm/ rear: 1,586mm, +39mm) and its wheelbase (2,669mm, +28mm) is longer than that of rival models, while the rear overhang has been shortened compared with the new car’s predecessor. The range of available wheel sizes extends up to 18 inches.

The new Mégane features Renault’s frontal identity, including a large, upright diamond logo and a broad grille, while quality chrome trim has been employed both at the front and along the sides (window surrounds, side badging and door handles).

Aerodynamics are a strong feature of the design, with air scoops either side at the front, deflectors at the rear and motorised flaps which automatically close to reduce aerodynamic drag.

Thanks to its strongly sculpted shoulders, the new Mégane radiates the sensuality embedded in the design genes of the Renault brand. Taut and precisely defined lines along the lower part of the body and bonnet align towards the front to enhance the dynamic poise of the car.

A distinctive lighting signatureInspired by the Talisman which was unveiled in July, the new Renault Mégane features a distinctive lighting signature both front and rear, by day as well as by night, to further reinforce the brand’s visual identity.

At the front, daytime running lights incorporate LED technology to provide a C-shaped signature that extends down to the bumper to assert the car’s frontal identity. Higher-end versions of the new Mégane feature full-LED lighting modules providing both dipped and full beam. This Pure Vision LED technology delivers a significant improvement in night-time vision compared with halogen lighting systems.

The rear LED light unit (all versions) feature tail lights that are permanently illuminated. This novel horizontal signature helps accentuate the car’s width. Thanks to new Edge Light technology, it provides a slender 3D brush stroke effect that emits a deep red light.

“The new Mégane plays an integral part in Renault’s design renewal strategy. Its dynamic lines project both sensuality and status, while its assertive proportions provide it with a well-planted stance on the road and its sculpted forms and strong shoulders hint at the brand’s Latin roots. It features a distinctive lighting signature both front and rear, by day as well as by night, and its elegant interior exudes an unmistakeable cockpit feel.”

Elegantly-appointed cockpit-style interior The cockpit-style interior has the driver as its focusParticular attention has been paid to finish and to the quality of materials in order to further upgrade travelling comfort aboard the new Mégane.

A suite of high-tech features clustered around the driver picks up on the idea of the L-shaped cockpit. Traditionally reserved for vehicles in the next class up, a full colour head-up display makes its appearance in the new Mégane. In addition, the dashboard features a seven-inch colour TFT (Thin Film Transistor) instrument display, plus a portrait-format 8.7-inch R-Link touchscreen within easy reach on the centre console.

Special focus has been placed on the quality and harmony of the cabin environment. The soft-touch material selected for the dashboard extends in a continuous sweep to the top door cappings. It also extends from the lower edge of the dashboard to the centre console. High-end versions feature a full-grain nappa leather-trimmed steering wheel, plus elegant chrome detailing for the steering wheel itself, as well as for the instrument-, air vent-, console- and switch-surrounds.

The centre console is broad and tall and incorporates a fore/aft adjustable armrest. Higher-end versions focus attention on the console with two slender lines of glowing light, the hue of which can be personalised using the Multi-Sense technology.

Bose® audio systems ensure a high quality sound environment on-board the new Mégane. Engineers from Bose worked in close co-operation with their counterparts at Renault to optimise integration of the nine loudspeakers, subwoofer and digital amplifier. The system provides a precise, balanced, tailor-engineered sound that is crystal clear.

Enveloping, sculpted seatsCarefully sculpted seats wrap around occupants, with optimum comfort and support ensured by the use of dual density foam. The structure of the seats is shared with that of the new Espace and the Talisman.

Taking their inspiration from the worlds of interior furnishings and leather goods, the materials selected for the seats are warm and modern. Special attention has been paid to the finesse of the topstitching on the seats and door casings in comparison with the Mégane 3.

The new Mégane has a range of five upholstery grades, all in shades of black. High-end versions are available with a velvet material developed in partnership with Alcantara®, giving a powerful lustre and an intense black 3D effect.

High-end versions come with heated seats and electric lumbar adjustment. The driver seat incorporates a massage function.

The new Mégane’s boot capacity of 384dm3 VDA (434 litres) is the second biggest in the compact car segment and is complemented by interior stowage space totalling 25 litres. Rear knee room of 175mm marks a 20mm improvement over that of the Mégane 3, while shoulder width (1,441mm at the front, 1,390mm in the rear) is amongst the segment’s best. The new Mégane consequently delivers the best of both worlds when it comes to rear passenger space and boot capacity.

The new Mégane GT: Renault Sport-inspired stylingThe new Mégane GT features an all-new signature colour, namely Iron Blue. From the outside, the design of the front bumper signals the step-up in sportiness that goes hand in hand with the Renault Sport DNA. It is complemented by a special design for the upper and lower grilles. The lower air intake is wider and flanked by air scoops, while use of the Dark Metal finish – in particular for the door mirror housings – confirms that the car belongs to the GT family. The optional 18-inch diamond-effect, GT-badged wheels were specially developed by Renault Sport. At the rear, two chrome-plated exhaust tailpipes echo the style of the twin air scoops at the front to provide a sense of symmetry. These tailpipes flank a diffuser that takes its inspiration from the world of Formula 1. The new Mégane GT carries Renault Sport badging on the left-hand side at the rear, as well as on both front wings. The interior is Renault Sport through and through. The wraparound seats with integral headrests, blue topstitching and a chequered sports logo are strong on comfort as well as lateral support. Three different upholstery choices are available: fabric, Alcantara® leather with blue stripes, and Alcantara® leather with black stripes. The bespoke steering wheel features optimised ergonomics, while the sports pedal set in aluminium and the combination of a special gear lever and steering-wheel mounted gearshift paddles are designed for sporty driving. The information delivered by the instrument pack and display screen is enhanced, too, most notably with the addition of a ‘Race’ mode. Hints of blue within the cabin on flat surfaces and for the topstitching pick up on the Iron Blue exterior colour to reinforce the New Mégane GT’s unique identity.

Technology drawn from the next segment up, plus a comprehensive selection of enginesHigh-tech driver environment amongst the segment’s very bestThe use of the CMF (Common Module Family) C/D modular architecture permits the new Mégane to offer a range of features more usually associated with the next segment up and drawn from the new Espace and Talisman. They include a colour head-up display, a seven-inch colour TFT (Thin Film Transistor) instrument display, two versions of the R-Link 2 tablet (seven-inch landscape format or 8.7-inch portrait format screen), Multi-Sense technology and 4Control. This comprehensive suite of technologies is unique in the segment.

A colour head-up display drawn from the next segment up

The retractable colour head-up display boosts safety and enhances driver comfort by making it clear and easy to use the driving aids. Drivers can take in the most important information for stress-free motoring – speed, navigation instructions and driving aids (ADAS) – without having to take their eyes off the road.

The new Mégane incorporates the very latest driving aid technologies that were recently revealed on-board the new Espace and the Talisman. The full suite of ADAS functions is activated and controlled using the R-Link 2 tablet:

• Improved safety: speed control through ACC (adaptive cruise control), and automated emergency braking (AEBS).

• Warnings: Lane departure warning (LDW), safe distance warning (DW), overspeed warning linked to traffic sign recognition (TSR) and blindspot monitoring (BSW).

• Reduced stress: reversing camera, automatic switching between main and dipped headlight beams (AHLB), front, rear and side parking aids, and Easy Park Assist for hands-free parking.

The segment’s first car to come with a portrait-format 8.7-inch tablet screen

Higher-specification models in the new Mégane range feature R-Link 2 complete with an 8.7-inch portrait-format display, identical to the screen seen on the new Espace and the Talisman. Uniquely in this segment, this screen employs capacitative technology for easier use, much like that of a smartphone or tablet computer.

R-Link 2 includes voice recognition for simpler and safer operation of functions such as navigation, telephone, apps and radio. Its three customisable homepages allow swift access to the most frequently used functions. A connectivity package including a 12-month subscription to TomTom Traffic (depending on market) and access to the R-Link Store expands the scope of this multimedia tablet.

Dashboard with seven-inch colour TFT screen instrument module

The content of the seven-inch full-colour TFT (Thin Film Transistor) display can be customised, depending on the selected driving mode. The dashboard displays fundamental data like speed, as well as numerous other information streams relating to navigation or driving aids.

Innovative Multi-Sense technology

Already available for the new Espace and the Talisman, Multi-Sense is a technology that allows users to personalise their driving experience. It does this by modifying accelerator pedal and engine response, adjusting the speed of the gearshifts performed by the EDC automatic transmission and controlling the massage function of the seats and the cabin lighting environment.

The Multi-Sense button on the centre console provides instant access to these functions.

The system offers a choice of five different driving modes, namely ‘Sport’, ‘Normal’, ‘Comfort’, ‘Perso’ and ‘Eco’. On the GT version, the eco button is replaced by a R.S. Drive button.

Five different interior lighting ambiances are available: red, green, blue, purple and brown. The lighting ambiance covers the centre console, as well as the front and rear doors of high-end versions. The colour is linked with the display colour on the TFT screen and the portrait-format multimedia display.

A broad range of engines, stretching to 205 horsepowerAvailable from launch under the bonnet of the new Mégane GT will be the Energy TCe 205 petrol engine, mated to seven-speed EDC dual clutch automatic transmission. The Diesel Energy dCi 165 engine, linked to six-speed EDC dual clutch automatic transmission, will complete the GT line-up in the course of 2016.

The core of the range will feature the Energy dCi 110 Diesel engine, combined with a six-speed manual gearbox. This version emits just 86g of CO2 per kilometre (3.3 litres/100km) and is ECO2-listed. Since June 30, 2015, Renault has been using the ECO2 label to highlight the most economical engine in each model range.

The launch engine line-up is rounded out by the following units:

• Diesel: Energy dCi 90, Energy dCi 110 mated to six-speed EDC dual clutch automatic transmission and Energy dCi 130.

• Petrol: Energy TCe 100; Energy TCe 130 and Energy TCe 130 with seven-speed EDC dual clutch automatic transmission.

A ‘Hybrid Assist’ Diesel will be added early in 2017. With a targeted NEDC cycle figure below the 3 litres/100km threshold and CO2 emissions of 76g/km2 , this power unit will position the new Mégane as the market leader in terms of low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The system achieves this by capturing energy under deceleration and braking, and then boosting acceleration under certain conditions, especially at low engine speeds, to combine driving pleasure with extreme economy.

4Control for the new Mégane GT: a segment firstThe new Mégane GT is the first vehicle in its segment to feature 4Control technology, specially calibrated by engineers from Renault Sport. The 4Control chassis is a Renault innovation that controls the alignment of the rear wheels, providing exceptional driving enjoyment and combining sporting responsiveness with safety. On twisty roads, 4Control ensures precise, dynamic handling, as well as stability at higher speeds. In emergency situations, the four-wheel steering system provides reassuring, lightning-fast responses. The car becomes smoother, more precise and more relaxing to drive, and there’s genuine enjoyment at the wheel whatever the preferences of the driver. The system also improves manoeuvrability at slower speeds or when parking.Rounding up the new Mégane’s chassis package is a special set of calibrations (for dampers, springs, ESP, brakes, etc.) that maintains the same high levels of comfort and versatility. Meanwhile, the new Mégane GT employs new technologies specially developed by Renault Sport, namely Multi Change Down, which enables rapid downshifting, and Launch Control for a much more efficient getaway from a standing start. “At Renault Sport we poured all our know-how into ensuring the new Mégane GT would be both comfortable and a joy to drive. The 4Control four-wheel steering system combines with a suspension system specially tuned by Renault Sport engineers to deliver a unique experience on all types of road. With its 205hp engine, seven-speed EDC gearbox operated via steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, unique exterior styling and its sports-focused interior, the new Mégane GT is the perfect solution for buyers looking for performance, excitement and enjoyment at the wheel!”Patrice RATTI, Managing Director, Renault Sport Technologies

The Talisman Estate: Renault’s new large estateRenault has chosen the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show to present the new Talisman and the Talisman Estate to the public for the first time. In Europe, the D segment represents more than a million vehicle sales every year, and estates account for 54% of that figure. The Renault Talisman Estate features the same strengths as the model’s saloon version – unveiled in July – while adding the stylish lines and practicality of an estate.

Racy linesThe Renault Talisman Estate features exactly the same dimensions as the saloon version (length: 4.86m long/ width: 1.87m/ height: 1.46m/ wheelbase: 2.81m), along with dynamic proportions, a sleek profile and a high waistline. Its front end sports the new Renault identity, with the brand’s upright diamond logo prominent against a chrome grille. Renault’s new visual signature is clearly expressed through the C-shaped daytime running lights which extend down to the bumper. The lights are the very last word in technology, with 100% Pure Vision LED dipped and main beam headlights for the higher-end versions.

Meanwhile, the side view’s waistline rises slightly over the wheel arches to add a distinctly dynamic feel to the rear profile.

The polished aluminium roof bars accentuate the sweeping roofline that is extended by a long lip spoiler. The C-pillar and chrome-bordered side windows contribute to the impression of finesse and sleekness. The slope of the rear window adds a dynamic touch without detracting from boot space.

The large-diameter wheels (680mm) offer a choice of alloy rims – from 16 to 19 inches – and are a snug fit within their sculpted arches. The rear lights benefit from 3D-effect Edge Light technology. They are permanently switched on and endow the Talisman with an assertive lighting signature.

Easy to load with boot space of almost 1,700dm3

Access to the boot is particularly straightforward, thanks to a sill height of 571mm, a wide opening of 1,074mm and, like the saloon version, a powered tailgate. The 60/40-split rear bench seat incorporates Easy Estate modularity which allows them to be folded in an instant thanks to two levers situated in the boot.

Thanks to the powered tailgate – which is activated simply by waving your foot underneath the rear bumper – the boot boasts ‘hands-free’ opening and closing to facilitate loading.

The new Talisman Estate offers 572dm3 (VDA) of load space up to the parcel shelf and a maximum load length of 1,116mm. With the rear seats in the folded position, that figure increases to 2,010mm, equating to a volume of almost 1,700dm3 (VDA).

The secret to occupant well-being: a spacious cabin and comfortable seats Designed with the well-being of its driver and passengers in mind, the Renault Talisman Estate – just like the saloon version – is a class leader in terms of interior space. The Estate version additionally benefits from 30mm of extra headroom for rear passengers, extending it to 886mm.

• Front headroom: 902mm,

• Rear headroom: 886mm,

• Front elbow room: 1,512mm,

• Rear knee room: 262mm,

• More than 25 litres of cabin stowage.

The accommodating front seats combine the very best characteristics in the class:

• Up to 10 possible settings (eight of which are electrically adjustable) and a seat length that can be adjusted fore/aft by up to 60mm3,

• Four-way electric lumbar adjustment (height/depth),

• A massage function that can be adjusted in its type and intensity (two programmes / five sequences),

• Aviation-style six-way adjustable headrests,

• Heated cushions and backs,

• Settings memory for up to six individual profiles.

Plus two important new features:

• Integrated ventilation for greater comfort in hot weather,

• New ‘Cover Carving Technology’: semi-rigid, strong, lightweight shells incorporated into the front seat backs, freeing up extra space, including more than three centimetres of additional knee room for rear passengers.

Five equipment levels:

The Talisman Estate is available in a choice of five different equipment levels, including the range-topping Initiale Paris trim which offers even greater refinement and comfort with an exclusive Améthyste Black exterior finish, special full-grain nappa leather upholstery and improved soundproofing, thanks notably to the use of laminated side windows.

The Talisman and Talisman Estate: packed with technologies that enhance driving enjoyment and travelling comfortMulti-Sense technology combines four-wheel steering with active dampingThe Renault Talisman and Talisman Estate benefit from shared technologies.

For the first time in its segment, the Renault Talisman mates the 4Control system to active damping. Around town, the 4Control chassis endows the Talisman with extraordinary agility. Its cornering stability and dexterity when evasive action is required position the new Renault in a class of its own when it comes to driving comfort and ease.

Renault’s Multi-Sense technology allows the driving experience to be personalised with a choice of four pre-programmed settings (‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’, ‘Neutral’ and ‘Eco’), plus a fully configurable ‘Perso’ mode.

These modes are selected using either the R-Link 2 multimedia system or the control on the centre console and act on the engine’s response, the EDC transmission’s gearshift calibration, the degree of effort required to turn the steering wheel, the active damping settings and the configuration of the 4Control system.

The Talisman is capable of changing its personality in the blink of an eye: a ‘shortcut’ button enables the driver to switch from the ‘Comfort’ to the ‘Sport’ mode and vice-versa, for example, in just two clicks. Meanwhile, the Talisman’s architecture – which features a lower centre of gravity and a driving position that is close to the road – means the Multi-Sense advantages can be enjoyed even more fully, especially when the particularly dynamic ‘Sport’ mode is selected. It is almost as though drivers are able to choose between several cars rolled into one. Whether they are in the mood for a spirited, responsive drive or a smooth, comfortable and refined journey, the choice is theirs – and immediate.

At the same time, the in-car ambiance is modified to match by adapting the colour of the interior lighting (blue, red, sepia, green or purple), the presentation and colour of the dashboard information display and the engine sound.

A bold design for Renault’s large saloonBy adopting the three-box body style that is so popular in its segment, the Renault Talisman features nicely balanced proportions while at the same time offering a generous amount of cabin space and complementing familiar cues with Renault’s warm touch and welcoming DNA. Inside, the Talisman easily wins over its occupants with a cabin that is amongst the most spacious in its class, along with ultra-comfortable seats and 608dm3 of boot space. To find out more about the Talisman saloon that was revealed on July 6, see the Renault Talisman Press Kit
