ELEPHANT POINTAvailable water depth at Inner Bar near Monkey Point below chart datum is about 4.5m and at Outer Bar near Elephant Point is only about 5m.

Along the access channel, there are two constraint areas (shallow water area) namely Inner Bar and Outer Bar which were main obstacles for restricting of the size and draft of vessel calling to Yangon and Thilawa Ports.

o In June, 2009, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) relating to the Development, Operation and Management of the Myanmar Crude Oil Pipe Line Project was signed between the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and China National Petroleum Corporation of China.

o The total investment amount of the project is estimated over US$2.0 billions. The construction works of the oil and gas terminalshall be completed by 2013.

o Construction of the Work-boat Wharf at the project area was completed in May 2011.

Prosperityo West-East Economic Corridor Working Group has

identified to develop deep sea port supporting with industrial estate at Kalagauk area where it was stretched and covered between Mawlamyine and Ye coast line in Mon State.

o West-East Economic Corridor (WEC) route will act as a land bridge linking India Ocean in the Pacific, cutting the distance of the conventional circuitous sea route passing the Malacca Strait by almost two third.

o The Project will certainly benefit the countries along the corridor such as Vietnam, Lao, Cambodia, Thailand and China as well.

o Development of deep sea port will serve access port as a gate way of WEC at west side.

o So, it will be realistic to conduct feasibility study on development of said project

Inter-modal Connections in Myanmar

Improvements in both capacity and connectivity between differentmodes of transport, ICDs and freight terminals can result in more efficient handling of containerized cargoes, thereby reducing transportation costs and providing transport opportunities for inland areas.

Development of different transport modes and intermodal connections to major sea ports is particularly important for landlocked countries such as Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Regional cooperation in improving the intermodal connections of the Asian Highway network to these landlocked countries would ensure improved access to maritime transport and thus to extended global markets.

Inter-modal Connections in Myanmar

In addition, to realize fully the trade benefits that roads can provide, investment is also required in important complementarities such as improving facilities and efficiency at ports, ICDs and border crossing points. In that regard, cooperation between member countries is desirable in standardizing and harmonizing border crossing and customs clearance procedures and in overcoming bottlenecks in the transport chain that cause delays during modal changes.

Conclusion

o In order to achieve sustained economic development of

the country, market‐oriented economy has already been

lunched and appropriate measures for economic

reforms and liberalization were also initiated.

o For the all round development of Port Sector, potential

investors from local and foreign are warmly welcome to

participate for port development activities.
