A survey learned that the average size of a system installed is about 350 kg. This corresponds with a system used to protect an average size server or control room. In this slide, we want to visualize the impact of a discharge of a system using HFC-227 (most popular HFC used in fire protection) on the environment. If you multiply the quantity of gas with the GWP/kg CO2 equivalent Bottom line, the discharge of this fairly small quantity has the same GWP impact as the CO2 emission of 240 US cars driven for an entire year, 24 hours a day!!!

Human Safety: Land Every extinguishing agent has a NOAEL which is defined under a specific internationally recognized test protocol (cardiac sensitization test). Objective of the test is to simulate the influence of the agent (during a discharge of the system) on the hart under stress (in case of a fire, increased stress on the hart makes it more sensitive) In order for an agent to be accepted as a fire protection agent, agent and system need to pass specific test protocols (depending on the type approval). These test protocols define the Use (design) concentration = extinguishing concentration + 30%to comensate for losses. The difference between Use conc. & NOAEL defines the Safety margin. The higher this safety margin, the safer the product for exposure to people. [High safety margin is good. Safety margin is percentage more than design concentration that ‘No Observed Adverse Effect Level’ is. Space & Weight: inert gas systems are 6-7 times bigger and heavier than a system using a chemical agent. Inert gas systems need to be stored outside of the risk while a system using Novec 1230 fluid can be stored inside the risk. Speed of extinguishing: 60 seconds faster than when compared to an inert gas of CO2. In case of a fast spreading fire, this is important Local filling: As there are no ADR restrictions at all, Novec 1230 fluid can be transported per ship, plane and truck in unlimited quantities as the product is not damaging for the environment, non toxic, non flammable, non explosive.
