Introduction
• This 2012 edition of “Status of the MEMS Industry” presents MEMS device markets
and key industry changes and trends
• Yole is actively following the market evolution of more than 200 MEMS applications
and is tracking 350+ MEMS companies. This report combines all these applications
into 12 major MEMS devices: IJ heads, pressure sensors, microphones,
accelerometers, gyroscopes, MOEMS, microbolometers, microdisplays,
microfluidics, RF MEMS, micro tips, and emerging MEMS devices
• Based on the thousands of direct interviews Yole Développement analysts are
conducting annually in the MEMS field with MEMS manufacturers, system
manufacturers integrating MEMS and MEMS designers, MEMS equipment and
materials manufacturers, and MEMS technology developers, this 8th version of the
“Status of the MEMS Industry” provides up to date analyses and data on MEMS
markets.

The MEMS industry today
• The MEMS market is on a growing curve again and many changes are happening on
the technical side, business model side and supply chain side.
• MEMS will continue to see steady, sustainable double digit growth for the next six
years, with 20% compound average annual growth in units and 13% growth in
revenues, to become a $21 billion market by 2017.
– In 2006, the introduction of the first 3 axis accelerometer for consumer application was quite
a revolution ($1/axis, a few 10s of million of devices produced). 5 years later, the consumer
application is a 100s of million devices market with price below $1 for a 3-axis
accelerometer.
– Thus, to answer to low cost, small size and high volume, manufacturing is also changing
with new packaging approaches, new materials and processes.

The MEMS industry today
• Every year brings new business in the MEMS landscape. Today, combo sensors are
reshuffling the cards in the competitive landscape. But the MEMS market is still very
fragmented, with number of high volume MEMS applications still limited today
• However, a whole range of new MEMS devices now reaches the market and new
“emerging MEMS” devices are coming as well:
– Some of them have really the possibility to ramp up to large volumes quickly: the ones that
can be applied to mobile devices (RF MEMS switches, oscillators, auto-focus…)
– Both sensors (humidity, touchscreen,…) and actuators (switches, energy harvesting…) are
driving future growth
– In addition to those emerging MEMS, growth of the MEMS market will come from existing
sensors that are expanding into new market spaces, sometimes using new types of
integration: e.g. pressure sensors for consumer.

MEMS markets overview Emerging MEMS
• Although the MEMS market is very fragmented, the number of high volume MEMS applications is still limited today

– For automotive: only inertial sensors and pressure sensors
