The respective IT companies need to play an important role in c/w maintenance of proper safety and security aspect of their women employees specially for them who work in night shifts throughout the year. Some major areas of thrust can be highlighted as follows: 1. Providing safe mode of transportation 2. Helpdesk and Helpline number (24*7) for emergency purpose 3. Self Defense training 4. Organizing frequent meetings with the women 5. Internal management

OF TRANSPORTATION

How to deal with the safety & security aspect of cab? Keep responsible and trustworthy drivers.

Cab driver must be properly instructed and sensitized.

Monthly/weekly feedback from the employees about the behavior of the driver.

You need to make sure the last drop should not be any woman alone.

If possible male colleagues who live in the same route can accompany his female counterpart.

Cab should be kept a track of by using GPS services or by messaging services.

Maintain an updated database of all blacklisted drivers or transport vendors and share it with the local police station.

How to deal with the safety & security aspect of cab? Hire a guard who will remain in the cab till the last drop.

The background of all such security guards who will accompany women in such cabs must be checked during their appointment from their respective authorities and if there is any such doubt do consult with the local police station for proper help.

Maintain a database that includes Fingerprints and Photographs of all cab drivers who had already been detailed for duty in night shifts.

Install CCTV cameras inside the cabs and keep it under constant monitoring throughout the night till the last drop.

Install a display board inside the cab consisting of the name & photo of the driver of that particular shift and also the vehicle registration number itself.

EMERGENCY HELPDESK

HELPLINE NUMBERS

How the particular company can provide emergency services to its women employees at night?Start companys own HELPLINE number in the office so that if any problem occurs the women employee can contact at that number for help.

It should be made mandatory for each of the women employee working in night shifts that whenever they reach safely at their own place they need to inform over phone to the transport desk and if they fail to do so the transport desk will call them up after the estimated time of reaching home for confirmation.

Deploy patrolling vehicle which will remain in touch with the emergency helpdesk and could tackle any kind of untoward incidents and also can inform to the local police station if necessary.

SELF DEFENSE TRAINING COURSE

Un-Armed Combat (UAC) is always a better option - How to deal an attacker without using any arms?The company can arrange some short term defense training courses for enhancing the physical capabilities of the women employees to deal with any kind of untoward incidents.

Company can make this course compulsory so that all women employee shall attend the session.

Mainly in this type of session basic techniques viz. elbow strike and knee strikes has to be learnt for primary defense against the attacker.

Use of Pepper spray has become an upcoming readymade solution and safety tool for women- this session will also guide them regarding the proper use of this tool.

FREQUENT MEETINGS

How to create awareness among women folk?Frequent internal meetings with the women employees can be conducted regarding their grievances in c/w safety and security measures.

The minutes of such meeting has to be taken into consideration whenever you are discussing these issues before the topmost level of your organization.

In such meetings a regular feedback report has to be collected from women employees regarding cab drivers and guards who are mainly accompanying them during their way back to home after night shift duties.

The meeting should be headed by a senior woman employee who has that much power to take any decision instantly.

Attendance of the women employee has to be made compulsory in such meeting.

INTERNAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT ROLE THAT MANAGEMENT HAS TO PLAY?Keep proper Watch guard in your office.

Involve both male as well as females in the security staff of your office.

Listen to the concerned workers issues or problems regarding their safety from time to time and do the needful.

Set up an authority to look into the problems concerning the security of women employees and taking required actions.

Ensure that complaints are investigated independently.

Member of the investigating committee must be chaired by a lady and 50% of the member mandatorily should be lady.

Install CCTV cameras within the office campus so that if any kind of untoward incident takes place with any women employee within the office premises then prompt action can be taken with the help of this video footage.

The application sends SOS alerts from your phone. SENTINEL

The app can send multiple SMS and e-mail alerts to pre-configured numbers and e-mail ids. The app has been designed for smart phones including all devices with Android, Blackberry, Symbian, iOS and Java operating systems. The app requires a continuous cell phone signal. Firm says that prolonged signal loss will cause a fail safe alert SMS and e-mail to be sent from the companys server.

POCKET KNIFE A small pocket knife is always a good weapon to be used in support of RIGHT TO PRIVATE DEFENSE.

A FEW BASIC THINGS WHICH SHOULD BE KEPT IN MIND:

Be aware of the surroundings.

Your body language should be firm and positive.

Resist- Dont go along with the attacker: Run, if you are able: DONT EVER GIVE UP.

If you are walking alone in the dark and you find someone chasing, scream FIRE instead of HELP. People dont want to get involved when people yell HELP but FIRE will draw attention for sure.

Pretending to Vomit.

Say NO to lift from strangers.

For any help on road go to police personnel or any women.

Your water bottle can be used as a baton.

Local police administration also has an important role to play regarding maintenance of safety and security of the women employees working under their jurisdiction. Following steps has been taken for better policing in near future to cope up with safety and security problems of women employees:

Sensitization of Police Officials regarding how to handle the women victims when they come at Police Station to lodge a complaint.

Wider recruitment of Women Police Personnel at every level specially at local Police Stations.

Identification of specific crime prone areas specially near IT Hubs where from women employees after attending their night shifts start heading towards their home.

Helpline number of the local Police Administration had already been distributed through the website of Bidhannagar City Police.

Organizing the awareness generation program and participation in the same.

Bidhannagar City Police had already enhanced visible policing by deploying more police personnel in night patrolling.
