General information Dimethyl Formamide varies from completely colorless to
a slightly yellow liquid.Recognizable by the fishy unpleasant odor it releases
Soluble in water, alcohol, ether, acetone, benzene, and chloroform.
A derivative of formamide.
General InformationDMF is a polar solvent with a high boiling point. It can be synthesized from methyl formate and
dimethylmaine with carbon monoxide. It is also not stable in the presence of strong bases such as sodium hydroxide and strong acids such as sulfuric acid and hydrochloric
acid.
USESDimethyl Formamide is most commonly used as an
industrial solvent.DMF is also used to process polymer fibers (allows
easy spinning of acrylic fibers), films, surface coatings, and is a component of paint strippers because of how
it reacts with plastic.Along with a crystallization medium in pharmaceutical
industry. It is also used in the production of pesticides, and the manufacturing of synthetic leathers, and adhesives.Another use for Dimethyl Formamide is the use in
embalming fluids. A small bit is combined with acetone in a lot of embalming fluids.
Health EffectsPotential Acute Health Effects
Hazardous in case of skin contact resulting in rash.
Irritant when it comes in contact with eyesIngestion and inhalation result in abdominal
pain, nausea, vomiting, and jaundice. This can also lead to damage to the lungs,
kidneys, and liver. There has also been a possible association
between DMF exposure and testicular cancer.
