2. General descriptionThe Grundfos Powerline PC Tool Link USB is a communication unit that can connect Grundfos products with built-in powerline terminals to a PC with a product-specific Grundfos PC tool installed.

2.1 Powerline PC Tool Link USB packageThe Powerline PC Tool Link USB package includes all the items needed to connect the Grundfos product and the PC.The Powerline PC Tool Link USB suitcase contains:• Powerline PC Tool Link USB • standard USB cable• CD-ROM with PC Tool Link virtual COM port software and

installation and operating instructions• CD-ROM with PC Tool Water Utility• printed version of installation and operating instructions.• two powerline connectors.

2.1.1 Contents of the PC Tool Link CD-ROM• setup.exe is the installation file for installing a virtual COM port

(Windows 2000 professional (SP4) or later).• Powerline PC Tool link.pdf is a PDF file of these installation

and operating instructions.• The development folder contains information for developers

who want to establish a direct link to the PC Tool Link.

2.1.2 Contents of the PC Tool Water Utility• setup.exe. is the installation file for the product-specific

PC Tool (Windows 2000 professional (SP4) or later).

3. Communication

3.1 Power supplyThe Powerline PC Tool Link USB has no internal power supply. It is powered via the USB connector on the PC. If a USB hub is used, it must be self-powered.

3.2 Installation of virtual COM portThe communication between a PC tool and a Powerline PC Tool Link USB is established via a virtual COM port.1. Insert the PC Tool Link CD-ROM.2. Launch the setup.exe file from the root directory of the

CD-ROM. A command line window pops up for a few seconds, indicating that the driver is being installed. See fig. 1.

When the window disappears, all necessary files have been installed on the PC.

3. Restart the PC.4. Connect the Powerline PC Tool Link USB to one of the USB

ports of the PC. It will automatically be recognised by Windows, and a virtual COM port is assigned to the Powerline PC Tool Link USB.

3.3 Installation of PC Tool Water Utility1. Insert the PC Tool Water Utility CD-ROM.2. Launch the setup.exe file from the root directory and the

CD-ROM, and follow the instructions.

3.4 Locating virtual COM port numberTo use the virtual COM port from a PC tool, the number assigned to the virtual COM port is required. This information can be found from the Device Manager in Windows.Control panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.In the Device Manager, expand the "Ports (COM & LPT)" item, and locate the "USB Serial Port" item. The virtual COM port number will appear in brackets next to the name, for example USB Serial Port (COM4) as highlighted in fig. 2.

If more than one PC Tool Link are connected to the PC, a virtual COM port number will be assigned to each unit.

3.5 ConnectorsThe Powerline PC Tool Link USB is supplied with two interfaces:• two terminals for powerline connection to the Grundfos

product• USB connector (connects to the PC).

3.6 TerminalsThe two powerline terminals must be connected directly to the powerline terminals on the Grundfos product as a point-to-point system, without connections to any other devices.

4. Functional descriptionThe PC Tool Link has four indicator lights (LEDs) for indication of the status of communication between the PC and the Grundfos product.

4.1 Functions of the LEDs

The orange LED is flashing when the PC communicates with the Powerline PC Tool Link USB. Otherwise, the LED is off.

The two red LEDs indicate communication to and from the PC.

The green LED indicates that the Powerline PC Tool Link USB is powered.

The orange LED (pos. 1) and the two red LEDs (pos. 2) are flashing while the PC communicates with the Grundfos product.

When the orange LED (pos. 1) and the red LED (pos. 3) are flashing, data is transmitted from the PC to the Grundfos product.
