    HOSTELS

    Requests for weekends out

    1. On weekends when matches are played or otherschool activities take place, girls may only go homeafter the scheduled activity.

    2. On closed weekends there will only be a return buson the Sunday evening but no bus on the Friday. The

ticket for the return journey must be bought in thenormal way during the week prior to that weekend.

    3. You will have noticed that there are compulsoryweekends out scheduled for the first term. While it isimportant that learners maintain regular contact withhome by going home for these weekends, I wouldstrongly advise that your daughter stay in for the otherweekends. The grade 8s are kept very busy during thefirst term and staying in helps them to adjust toboarding school and to make friends.

    4. Grade 8s may only be weekly boarders from the 2 nd term onwards.

    5. If it is not the parents doing the signing out, the persontransporting your daughter must please have proof ofidentification.

    Weekends Home

A boarding school is a home away from home but it is notmeant to be HOME. Girls MUST go home at least every 3 rd weekend to bond with their own families. It is not ideal tokeep your daughter in the hostel every weekend, neitheris it ideal to allow her to keep visiting friends. The girls arewith their friends all week and need a break. She needs tosee her family.

    Medical Information

A reminder to p lease ensure that your daughters medicalinformation is correct. It is important that you open anaccount at the Medicross Facility in James Moroka Streetwhere you will be issued with a file number. This makes iteasier to arrange an appointment for your daughtershould she fall ill. An account at the adjoining pharmacy

is also necessary to obtain the medication after seeing thedoctor. Without a file number or a pharmacy account, your daughter cannot be treated. Neither the school norhostel can pay mo ney on loan to get your ill daughtertreated.

    Contact with the Senior Housemistress

The Senior House Mistress of every hostel will be available totake phone calls between 20:00 and 21:00 from Mondays toThursdays. Please remember that, as a full time teacher at theschool, she will not be available during the mornings andafternoons.

    Dietary needs

It has become impossible to accommodate all the dietaryrequirements of the girls. The hostel can only prepare specialfood for girls who are diabetic or those with religious reasons. So no other special needs will be catered for. All girls claimingto be a vegetarian will have to eat from the same menu aseveryone else. This issue has been debated and discussed atlength and keeping in mind that we cater for four hundredpeople we just cannot continue to cook for all the girls withspecial needs. Every meal is balanced and whatever is servedin the dining room must be accepted.

    Cell Phone Policy at Hostel

Cell phones are to be switched off during study, at meal times, during rest and after lights out. Cell phones MAY NOT betaken to church. Problems in this regard will result in yourdaughter losing the privilege of having a cell phone at hostel. It will be confiscated until she goes home for a weekend whenshe will be required to take it home and leave it there.1. Grade 8 learners are NOT allowed to bring cell phones to

hostel until the SHM decides otherwise. This is usuallyduring term 2 or at the start of term 3.

    2. The grade 8s may not phone home during the first threeweeks of the first term.

    3. Grade 8 phoning times are governed by school, extra-mural activities, study etc. and so are generally between 05:45 and 06:15 in the mornings, in the afternoons andbetween 19:00 20:00 in the evenings. If you have aserious problem concerning phoning times, pleaseensure that your daughter knows when you will beavailable.

HEAD LAMPSIt seems that load shedding is going to be a way of life. Wehave to accept it and make the necessary plans on how to dealwith it.

We have found that a headlamp works best for boarders aswell as for the day girls. A headlamp allows them to study anddo homework with the light focussed on the school work. It isthe safest option and is also convenient to walk about in thehostels as well as to go to the bathroom.

Please buy a headlamp as soon as possible for your daughter.

Tests and exams cannot be postponed because there was nolight to study. Please also buy a spare set of batteries for thelamp.
