What a pleasure to receive letters from parents, shop keepers, schools and elderly neighbours about our girls’ contribution on Community Service Day held recently on March 20. To see an elderly neighbour so touched by one of our girls helping her out on the day that she donated the money that she would have given to her, to The Child Cancer Foundation.

It was gratifying to hear about two others who organised to return to their primary school and have the Principal of the school saying “what a lovely idea for your school to send you out on a day of service to others.” She said she felt “extremely blessed to have you serving us today. ... It was a particularly grotty and time consuming job, and would have taken us ages to get it done, as no-one really has the time to spare. .. You worked very quickly and very tidily and certainly achieved far more than I thought you would within the day.”

Another of our girls organised her day at a Kohanga Reo. She was congratulated for joining in with “Karakia, Himine/Waiata, roll call, assisting with morning tea and lunch and sleeping the younger Tamariki.” Our girl was commended because “she has initiative, was not afraid to ask questions and was very helpful towards Tamariki, Kaiako and Kaiawhina. Here she initiated this game of bowls and was able to lure in these otherwise

very boisterous group of boys”. Yet another three were commended for helping out in a superette, doing “all the work they were assigned with great commitment and devotion. All three worked equally hard...” .. “ I was amazed at how well they co-ordinated with each other and the biggest thing, they all did the work with big smiles on their faces. I really enjoyed having three such wonderful girls for the entire day and making my day a lot less stressful. This shows the respect and quality of the girls in Hamilton Girls’ High School.”

At the same time I was also given a lovely inspirational notice to read to our girls heading off to Rowing Nationals at Twizel. As one of our new coaches he wrote: “We are Girls’ High. When I made a decision to join Hamilton Girls’ I set an achievement goal. That goal has already been achieved. Our squad – athletes, coaches, parents and school have only grown stronger. Our team for Maadi have “earned” the right to expect their best performance. You have our support to be calm and confident and proud.”

How very special to receive these well deserved accolades and compliments about your amazing daughters, - our girls. What makes them so special is that none of them are sought – all were offered because our girls have impressed with their attitudes, their willingness to think of others, to pull together for the greater good – whether in service or in sport in these examples. Such messages are something I hope each of you as parents are also feeling very proud about. It is no mean task and is an often thankless one, to be a parent. Yet time and again your girls show how worthwhile all that

effort and unconditional love you give no matter what. It’s paying off in massive bucketloads! Well done to all of you too! You too have earned your Certificates of Excellence!

We have had some amazing messages and role models this year with our senior leaders. Each week at our Friday assembly, our Head/Deputy Girls lead the assembly off and set such an inspirational tone, with their own special message. What I look forward to is hearing and seeing the connections they make with the girls with something which is current and relevant in their worlds. They set out to show how their message connects with something which is dear to us, to the “heart” of our school.

When the Head Girls accepted these roles I asked them to lead the school, to make our vision (aspiring to achieve our personal best) and our motto (a wise woman shapes her own destiny) real to our girls each week as they explored the assembly message with the girls. One of the privileges is sitting there observing how much the audience of half of our school - about 800 girls - each week responds to this young and powerful wisdom. I also know that they will listen much more closely to their peers too, so why not make sure this happens! If you are ever around at school about 10.30am on a Friday feel free to join us at the back of our assembly – this year all held in the gymnasium.

Next year or hopefully before the end of this year we will be in our new Centre for Creativity and Performance. Do keep an eye on our website as of now where we are recording our photos weekly about the Centre’s progress. It is very

using these two days to catch up on what you have missed with your absences to date. You will know you’re in this group as you will receive a letter from me over the holiday break - in the second week. Our school will not be online for the first week. There will be no power on site and no internet connections while we upgrade our transformer with the new buildings being added in to our overall power loading, during this first week.

Looking forward to seeing you all back and well on 26 April, - all ready to embark on Term 2.

exciting seeing the frames going up, and seeing the Music suite, as well as the Drama Black Box and Dance Studio coming into shape. The new Hall is on the corner of Tristram and Ward Streets and has a ground floor of four classrooms beneath it. We still have much to do to be able to provide not only a fantastic building but an infrastructure worthy of it.

Fundraising will be an important dimension, and we would love each family to consider supporting us here. We will be launching our Foundation’s “One Dollar Wednesday” campaign. We hope each family, each tutor group, each workplace, each of our providers, will get behind this fundraising, and offer up one dollar each Wednesday. Our Foundation is going to launch this at the beginning of Term 2. I hope we will have your support. Think about getting behind it and ask your workmates, your whanau, your community friends to support this fundraiser, for our new facilities.

Congratulations to all our girls and staff for their contributions to this newsletter. How special to see so many names of successes and the range of achievements where our girls are aspiring to achieve their personal best. Their commitment to personal best is there when we see how many have bought in so favourably to the 95% attendance to “earn privileges”. They have also been very committed towards their academic mentoring to support this central ethos. It is very inspiring to see the positive energy and wonderful relationships forming between mentors and tutors and our girls. It is all part of “no one left behind”, of each young woman mattering.

Continue to inspire us, girls! Many

of us are so excited about the impact of these new steps this year and I am very gratified around how our staff have immersed themselves in doing all we can to ensure all will succeed. My special thanks all round – we needed this level of commitment from the whole school team. It is a great effort which I hope you see reflected in the reports being distributed at the end of term via the parent portal or by post, where there is no internet in the home. I hope all have a safe and well earned rest over the break and you come back refreshed on Thursday 26 April. We will have a date with a few, unfortunately, before then on the 23rd and 24th for the full two days – where you have not earned this privilege. You will be

The Art Department achieved some excellent results in 2011. These results were gained from the hard work and tireless efforts of both the students and their teachers. This year we expect the same commitment from all and look forward to each student achieving their personal best. The junior programmes are producing some really exciting work in Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking. The students are making masks, patterned colorist paintings and dry point portraits. These projects prepare students for the NCEA level 1 programme that explores ‘Self Identity’. This term the Level 2 and 3 Art and Art History students attended the Degas to Dali exhibition at the Auckland City Art Gallery. It was a rare opportunity to experience first hand the works of world famous Avante Garde artists. The students were amazed and inspired by the visit. We look forward to an exciting and creative year ahead.

Junior Visual Art The Junior Visual Art Programmes is producing some really exciting work across all the disciplines of Painting, Sculpture and printmaking.

Aotea Apiti of Year 13 is now in Japan on an exchange, having been awarded a scholarship by NZIIU after winning a Gold Award in the Language Perfect World Championship competition last year. We wish her all the best for her experience in Japan and look forward to her return in August.

Students who have paid memberships to Language Perfect this year will be able to enter a similar competition, Language Olympics, next term. The cost for membership is $15 which can be paid to the student office in an envelope with the student’s name, tutor group, amount of money and what it is for, written on the envelope. Membership gives year round access to the website which helps students to study vocabulary in various languages. It is strongly recommended for all students studying languages to join Language Perfect as our students have found it to be very beneficial to their learning in the past.

Entries for the ‘Assessment of Language Competence’ tests will be sent at the end of the term, so the $15 entry fee for this needs to be paid to the student office by April 1st. This is compulsory for Year 11 and 12 students of French and Japanese. Thank you to those who have already paid.

The Year 12 French class are planning a trip to a French Film, “La Guerre des Boutons” on the 4th April. Mrs Hall and Ms Skandera are also busy with preparations for French camp early next term, and a trip to France with 16 students in September.

Our assistant Head of Department and Spanish teacher, Mrs Dorota Roznawska, has been awarded a Ministry of Education Immersion award and will be spending Term Two in Spain. We are lucky to have the services of Mrs Clara Beacon who will be looking after Mrs Roznawska’s classes while she is away.

We farewell Mrs Vicki Glassey who has resigned from her position as Japanese and Spanish teacher. We would like to acknowledge the dedication Mrs Glassey has shown the school and students over her years of service, including taking a group of 10 students to Japan in 2008. She will be missed by staff and students, and we wish her “Bon voyage” and all our best for her future.

Maths Text Books are available to all Maths students at HGHS for NO COST so long as they are returned at the end of the year. If you are being charged about $45 for a book called Alpha or Beta then your daughter has lost or NOT RETURNED her text book from 2011. This means other students are making do with old and outdated text books while we wait and wait and wait for your daughter’s book to be returned. Please help your daughter to find this book and save yourself the expense. Any overdue books should be returned directly to the school library asap.

Level 1 11 APS is a busy course this term where students must participate actively in a variety of physical activities and explain factors that influence their own participation. It is designed to provide students with the skills and attitudes to establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle among other things. The activities are training for and completing the Huntly Half Marathon (on the 20th May), training for and completing the Beach Education requirements of the course and there is also

a Softball unit as part of this Achievement Standard worth 5 credits towards NCEA Level 1. Methods of assessment for this Achievement Standard 1.1 are Observations, Surf Life Saving Events, Reflection, Keeping a Log, Conversations and Training and completing the Huntly Half Marathon. The Huntly Half Marathon is a huge challenge but if the girls follow the program given to them they should make the distance and then celebrate the wonderful sense of achievement of competing and completing this event.

Beach EDAll our year 11 sport and outdoor ed classes went to Raglan on the 9th for their beach education day. We were lucky enough to have beautiful weather which made the day much more enjoyable. The day started off with a 5km run along the beach and back up the hill – you can’t complain about that as a start to your day! We were then introduced to the surf club guards that took us through water safety and CPR. It was amazing to hear some of their stories about surf boat racing! After lunch we split into separate classes and completed a run swim run, beach flags and water rescues. It was a fantastic day at the beach, well done to all participants!

Level 2 Athletics Porritt StadiumWell the sunshine wasn’t out for us, only the champions go hard rain or shine!!!! So all the Year 12 Advanced PE Sport class were out giving it their best in all their events running, throwing and jumping. This is a part of the Achievement Standard 2.4 for the 5 Star Athletics Event. The girls need to train in three events one throw, jump and run to gain their credits. From a spectator’s view all the participants were very focussed in their individual events. Highlights for the day were breaking records in the Triple Jump by Kayla Cassells from our own class, the girls pushing themselves and participating when they may have not normally done so. It was a great start to the year and look forward to seeing more developments throughout the term in their performances in Athletics for their final result.Mrs Irwin2APS Teacher

2APO TrampingYear twelve outdoor education has started out on a high. We have just returned from a 3 day tramp at Tihoi which we capped off with some abseiling and rock climbing on the last day. It was beautiful weather thank goodness as we left the day after the latest weather bomb. We spent the first night at the Waihaha Hut sitting around the fire and enjoying an interesting array of food for dinner. On the second day we walked from 9.30 till 5.45 which got us to the beautiful Waihora Lagoon although many of the girls were disappointed that there was not enough water in it to swim. It was only a short walk back to Tihoi on the third day which helped the team push on knowing that we were nearly there. It really was an amazing few days with some very surprising skits at the end. Well done to all those in 2APO.

Level 3

3APO Term one has started well. This year we have record number of students taking the outdoors course. With the first practical assessment only 3 weeks away the girls are working hard at extreme edge practising their climbing. For their assessment

they are to compare themselves to an ‘expert’ climber and identify weaknesses in their own climbing. Once they have done this they are to write a programme, which they then follow, to improve their climbing. This is finished off with 2 practical assessments one on the indoor climbing wall at Extreme Edge in Hamilton and 1 outdoors at Wharepapa. An additional aspect to the course this year will be the tramp to the summit of Mt Pureora in the Pureora Forest Park. Students will also get the chance to listen to (and hopefully spot) the rare Kokako bird on their dawn tramp to the forest look out.

13APS - Tennis

Term One: Year 13 Advance Sport has been put through their paces with their Tennis coach this Term. The girls have tested their skill and ability level and are continuing to develop. Each student will play a twenty minute game against a professional as part of their assessment in April. I look forward to seeing how much they have developed and grown as a player. Happy training until then! Miss Walker13APS Teacher

Fun with dry ice and iodine sublimation

9XA Science with Mrs. Bergman

In Science last week 9XA has a lot of fun with dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide). We placed it in water and watched the vapour dance across the surface. We also filled a jug with the carbon dioxide gas and poured the gas onto a burning candle. The flame went out. In another experiment we watched a large tube filled with water, food colouring, detergent and dry ice. Froth formed and poured out of the tube overflowing and flowing down the side because carbon dioxide is heavier than air. We had just enough time to observe iodine turn straight from a solid to a purple gas under heat then form small solid crystals when it hit a surface cooled with ice.Natalie Scott 9XA

Volcanic activity field trip

On the 9th of March, the year 13 science class went on an exciting geology trip to Rotorua “the geological capital of New Zealand.” We had to be at school by 7.30am to begin our trip. Our first stop was the Hinuera Quarry where we were taken around by the manager who explained the formation of the ignimbrite rock and how the rock was cut and used for making sculptures. Our next stop was the Kuirau Park where we took qualitative tests on different geothermal pools which was really fun as it bought a hands on feel to the field trip.As the day proceeded, our class went to the Rotorua Museum where we got to experience first hand the Tarawera exhibition and the audiovisual earthquake simulation. Our last stop was the Waiotapu Thermal Park where we learnt

about how certain geothermic areas like the Rainbow crater and Devil’s Home were formed. The colors at the Champagne pool were amazing and somewhere I personally would recommend to anyone to visit.Overall the trip was very successful and was a good start to the beginning of the term. Level 3 Physics

This is year 13 Physics class. We are doing an experiment which is fun and at the same time educational. Mr Chand is our teacher and he has good sense of humour. For this experiment we attached a hook to a string that was rotated around a pulley which was held up by a retort stand. We measured the distance the hook was away from the ground and then measured the time it took the hook to fall. Using the time and distance we used

four different physics equation to calculate the Inertia of the pulley. Inertia of an object is resistance of any physical object to a change in its state of motion or rest. Do you know that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, so next time when you do sometime remember this Newton’s 3rd Law of motion.

Level 3 Chemistry

The students in Level 3 Chemistry have been fine tuning their titrating skills in preparation for an internal assessment that requires them to accurately identify the concentration of a solution. This requires much skill, patience and practice.

Social SciencesClassical Studies

Classical Studies have started with a bang this year! The year 13 students are looking at Roman religion and have learned about all sorts of interesting subtopics like prayer and divination. They even performed their very own sacrifice but only on a toy pig! Year 12 have started by comparing a modern film to classical myth and now love ‘Percy Jackson’ and ‘Clash of the Titians.’ The year 12s are also excited about their fieldtrip to the gardens and their first taste of Greek Drama.

Geography

Year 12 Geography has had a fantastic start to the year! The students are looking at Endangered Species at a global scale and have learnt about what is causing the endangerment and what we can do to help stop species becoming threatened. They have learnt about ways people can protect at-risk species and to reinforce these ideas they attended a Hamilton Zoo Fieldtrip. The students were very excited about the trip which helped

In term 2 we will be finalising several units of work. Year 10 Hamburger competitions will be taking place. Also year 12 Restaurants and year 13 are producing special occasions meals for a “Retro” theme event. The soap making in year 10 Biotechnology is taking shape with students now making their own bath bombs.

to cement the ideas about human impacts and the conservation of animals. Some students opted to participate in the Face-to-Face encounter available at the Hamilton Zoo and got up close and personal with Java the Sumatran Tiger!

Student Voice What are our students saying about their elearning?

At the end of 2011 almost 400 students (38% Year 9 and 62% Year 10 students) responded to a survey about ICT and elearning.

Findings: • Most families have the internet at home (93%)• Not many students are accessing the internet at school on a mobile device - our technician is available on Tuesday and Thursday at interval in the library to help students.• While many students own a phone that accesses the internet they would prefer to use a laptop to access the internet at school for their learning.• Approximately 75% of students use a computer for at least one hour a day at home. 23% said they spent more than 5 hours a day on the computer.• Facebook is the most popular computer activity for the students at home followed by homework then watching videos.• When asked “ How do you think your parents would respond if you were expected to bring a mobile device

to school?” 22% thought their parents would be keen and 55% thought they would be okay with it. • “What ICT tools do your teachers use in class?” Powerpoints (90%); YouTube (77%); moodle (66%); digital cameras ( 28%)• “ What ICT tools do you like your teachers using in class?” Powerpoints (64%); YouTube (83%); moodle (55%); digital cameras ( 33%)

Student examples of elearning in the classroom:

French - for educational games and recapped on new information from the last lesson. English - we used Youtube to Youtube a song and had to write another verse to end the song.Rich Task Day in DGT - we used cameras with stop motion animation which was really fun.Spanish - we heard, understood and responded the answers we thought were correct and if they weren’t we could try again. Also eportfolios as it is a different way of handing in our assessments which is new and interestingSocial Studies - learning about the Treaty of Waitangi;Sport - watching serious injuries on Youtube and the internet.

Our search last year to find the first female pupil enrolled at Hamilton High School, Annie Cook, unearthed the location of the school enrolment registers for Hamilton High School. After many unfruitful inquiries I discovered they were held in the Hamilton Boys’ High School archive.

The archivist from Boys’ High, Kate Holdsworth, and I have subsequently spent a morning making copies of the old registers for the archive at Hamilton Girls’ High. To date we have copied those from the opening of the school in 1911 until 1930. There are several more registers yet to be copied.

Entries in the registers, all in a variety of beautiful handwriting, are quite detailed. Boys were listed before girls, along with the date of birth and admission number. Names and address of the parents (usually the father), and primary or previous school attended, are followed by the date of withdrawal and the student’s destination, although this is not always included. Many of the girls returned home to help their mothers, while boys went to university, farming, joined the post office, and trained to be teachers.

Students from all over the Waikato were enrolled, and arrived from other schools in many parts of New Zealand. These original rolls list many well know names and early Hamilton identities.

I have also paid a visit to the archive at Boys’ High and scanned a large number of photos which related to either Hamilton High School or Hamilton Girls’ High School. Co-operation between the two school archives is ongoing as we source and copy photos or documents only held by one school, and discuss conservation and storage methods to preserve our precious school memorabilia.

2012 is the start of a new century bringing with it many unique changes.  It was not long ago that Hamilton Girls’ High old and current girls gathered to celebrate our one hundred year  anniversary.  Almost a year later we watch part of our school transform into something bigger and better.  After many years of additional planning the construction of our new hall began during the fourth term of 2011.  Day by day girls watched temporary fences being set up and trucks filled with rubble drive past.  Slowly the hall started to strip away, until finally the whole structure was demolished out of our sight.  Walking into the school grounds in 2012 there was a noticeable change.  Brick walls were being cemented together, a crane was compiling the metal structure of our hall and new concrete was being laid down.  I think I speak for everyone when saying that seeing these slight changes, the completion date at the end of term three does not seem very far away.        While the hall seems to be taking its form, included in this construction is a drama suite and music suite.  The drama suite brings with it a dance studio, black box and rehearsal room.  In comparison to the music suite, it  includes a recording studio, practicing rooms and a keyboard room.    There is no doubt that the name “Centre for Creativity and  Performance” for this new area is perfect.  This construction not only offers our girls a new surrounding to further develop their skills, but a centre where they can craft and become confident wise women shaping their own destinies.    By Harpreet Singh, Academic Captain

THE THREE MUSKETEERS

When and where did you find out that you were deputy head girl and what did you do after? I was at home, cleaning my room and the phone rang giving me the great news that I was deputy head girl!  It was so surreal that I celebrated by cleaning. Is there a person or motto that  motivates you to keep aiming high? My coach at karate always says to me “if it is to be, it’s up to me.”  I  basically live to that and try to do my best at everything I do.  My coach is  someone who has always really  inspired me. What do you do to keep a balance between your role and social life? I think my social life and role mixes together.  Being a leader you are  constantly surrounded by different people.  So they both intertwine  together really well and I just have so much fun. What advice would you give to our younger sisters? Do everything now because when you get to Year 13 you realise how much you missed out on.  Try to get into everything you can because that's how you know that you did everything you could to make your high school years the best that they were. RANDOM FACTS:

‐ I love red heads, they are amazing.     If you have red hair don’t dye it! ‐ I love noodles and bananas

When and where did you find out that you were head girl and what did you do after? I was at home and the first thing I said when I got off the phone was, "Aww yeah! Guess who's head girl this year!?" Humble, I know! It sounded insanely cocky, but I was only with my mum and dad and they were absolutely stoked, just like me.  Is there a person that motivates you to keep aiming high? My Mum. She's always encouraging me to better myself and aim higher. Also Brooke Fraser, she's my idol. She reminds me that one of the most  important parts of leadership is  giving back, it's not all about you and boosting yourself, but about what you can do for other people. The school vision is pretty deep for me too. I constantly aspire to achieve my personal best. What advice would you give to our younger sisters?  Just do it! I'm not a sales rep for Nike or anything, but actually, just do it! Give things a go. Go and play lacrosse because it looked fun in Mean Girls. Or go to Academic Council even if you're not an absolute genius. You'll never know if you like it, or what they actually do, unless you go and give it a go and try for yourself!  RANDOM FACT: ‐ If I could be an animal, I would  ‐ either be a lion or an eagle, I can't ‐ decide which is better.

When and where did you find out that you were deputy head girl and what did you do after? I was on the computer when I got the call.  At first I thought Mrs.  Baxter was going say that I missed out but then she said that I got  deputy head girl! I was so happy and then I did a little dance in the corner.  My parents and I had a celebratory dinner too. Is there a person or motto that  motivates you to keep aiming high? I attended an Outdoor Pursuits  Centre and I really liked the motto ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’.  I think teenagers need to realise that you can’t hold back in life, you’ve just got to give everything a go,  because sometimes you only get one shot at it. What advice would you give to our younger sisters? I would say to not let any  opportunity pass because then you wonder what could have happened.  For example I took the opportunity to go to Navy Adventure Challenge and now I’m planning on joining the navy when I leave school.  Everyone should live life to the fullest because you never know what tomorrow will bring.

ATHLETICS & SWIMMING SPORTS nek minnit...

But a little rain didn’t stop HGHS’s competitive athletes and swimmers.

Athletics: On the morning of Athletics 2012, the clouds hung overhead threatening to dampen our spirits.  Unfortunately due to the weather forecast our fun  activities had to be cancelled.  However HGHS’s competitive athletes headed in their crazy outfits to Porrit Stadium to showcase their talent.

By holding the competitive events it highlighted the  amazing ability and sportsmanship we have at HGHS.   The competitive events included discus, javelin, long jump, triple jump, high jump, 1500m, 800m, 400m, 200m, 100m and shot put.  Congratulations to all the girls who competed in these events and put in their best efforts.  Also another big congratulations to our three competitors who came out on top!  Jamie Jefferson was named the Junior Champion, Mikayla Jefferson the  Intermediate Champion and Shiray Tane being the Senior Champion.    We finished Athletics on a high note with the traditional ‘Teachers versus Year 13’s’ relay.  It was great to see the Year 13’s smashing the Teachers.   All in all, HGHS’s athletics 2012 was a great way to begin the school year.

Swimming Sports: Swimming sports 2012 was held on the 23rd of February.  Unfortunately the weather once again was not in our favour.  However our competitive swimmers put on their brave faces while sprinting in the pouring rain to the pool from the small gym in their togs.    Diving into the warm pool was a relief to our swimmers as they swam their hearts out!  A variety of swimming events were held, portraying once again the impressive talent we have at HGHS.  On a low note our final events were  cancelled due to the heavy rain but will be held especially for our swimmers on a later date.  Hopefully the sun will come out and shine for these final events!   By Shiray Tane, Sports Captain

RELAY FOR LIFE

After intense fundraising efforts, the two HGHS “Relay for Life” teams had to finally walk the walk… literally!   The Relay for Life is a 22 hour community event in support of the Cancer Society, which raises awareness about the far‐reaching effects of cancer, and celebrates those who have fought the battle and won. The  challenge for each participating team of ten is to have at least one member walking the track at all times. So despite sore legs and tired eyes, the girls soldiered on through the night and endured the freezing wind, taking turns to rest in the tents. But our girls could leave with their heads held high, knowing they had contributed to a great cause.  Congratulations to all the competitors, and thank you to those who donated. Don’t forget, this is an annual event, so don’t be afraid to join in the fun and carry the baton next year!!

My time at Hamilton News:By Kenna Horsfield, year 12. This year started with a bang and has been extraordinarily busy for me as I have enrolled in the Gateway programme meaning being offered a place at Hamilton News to gain work experience in journalism.

Having work experience at Hamilton News is really helping me weigh up options for when I leave school and provide me with more knowledge about being a journalist.

I am offered the chance to do interviews and write articles which is amazing as it means some of my work may actually get out there for people to read.

This is a huge achievement for me and my career if I do choose to be a journalist.

If any of the journalists are going out to get coverage of an event or interview someone in the community I get the chance to tag along which is an amazing opportunity as I get to observe what they do.

I have already picked up a lot of helpful tips I would have never thought of before such as wearing shoes that are easy to take on and

off, so when you’re interviewing someone in their home you don’t look stupid trying to get your shoes on and off.

Even what to look for in a journalism course to how to type up an article.I’m finding it really interesting discovering what is happening around Hamilton. There is so much that goes on we just don’t know about.

Working at Hamilton News gives me the opportunity to learn more about our community and the people in it which is just amazing!I work at the Hamilton News every Wednesday 9am till 12:30 pm which means I am missing quite a bit of school so there’s a lot of catch up to be done.

But the experiences Gateway is providing makes all the hard work worth it.

To anyone who is or going to be in year 12 or 13 and has a career choice they would like to try out head into the Gateway office and sign up.

Gateway is a once in a life time opportunity that helps you with the insanely difficult decision of what to do when you leave school.

Yr13 students – All Yr13 students will be invited to attend a careers interview with either Ms Calder or Mrs Lander during Term 1 & 2. The intention of this is to assist the students with their future plans for 2013 and beyond. You can support your daughter by encouraging her to attend the interview and discussing what her ideas are for her future. The CareersNZ website www.careers.govt.nz is a very good resource for both parents and students. Those unsure about their plans are encouraged to complete the activities that may give them a starting point – CareerQuest, Skills Matcher, Managing work in life. The results of these can then be discussed at a second interview time if necessary.

All Yr13 students also have the opportunity to complete a Red Cross First Aid Certificate and bookings are presently open in the Careers Room for a range of

different dates. This is a very good addition to a CV.

Yr11 & 12 students – These students will be completing a Careers Module through the PDP programme (Personal Development Programme) during Term 2 & 3. They will have the opportunity to consider their interests, skills and future plans. These years are the perfect time to begin exploration of their various career ideas and they can do this through participating in STAR courses, Gateway work placement scheme and career specific days. They can also make appointments to speak with the Career Counsellor.

Yr10 students – These students will begin a Careers Module with Mrs Lander during Term 2 & 3. This module is focused on expanding the student’s knowledge of careers and familiarizing them with tertiary study pathways. They will also have

Careers

Hamilton Girls High School Art Exhibition

the opportunity to participate in STAR courses during Term 3.

Tertiary Liaison Visits - All eight NZ Universities are scheduled to visit the school during Term 1 & 2 to present an overview of courses. The timetable for this can be found on the school website and various notice boards around the school. The students are also informed through the daily notices. It is very important the senior students check these as specific career information will posted throughout the year. They are also encouraged to start visiting the various institution websites and familiarizing themselves with closing dates, scholarships and course requirements.

If any students or parents have concerns they are more than welcome to make an appointment with Ms Calder the school Career Counsellor.

Wilson House

Wilson girls have done themselves proud this term. Congratulations on getting involved and engaged in House Competitions. It has been heartening to see a mass of yellow clad competitors in the House events. It has been delightful to see such passion, engagement and enjoyment being expressed by both students and staff.

Term Two is just around the corner, and that brings the Cross Country House Competition into focus. Wilson did extremely well in this event last year, so let’s see if we can do the same in 2012.

The wonderful endeavours and House Spirit of Wilson girls, will be recognised, in a Wilson Girl of the Month Award for each Wilson Tutor Group. Girls will be nominated from each Tutor Group, receive a Certificate and go into the draw for a Movie Ticket.

So come on Wilson House. Let’s put our best foot forward.

Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday break.

Arohanui, Mrs Weir (Head of Wilson House)

MacDiarmid House

MacDiarmid started the year ready for action our House Leader Kim Jing with her prefects Whitley Byford, Tahlia TeKiri, Madisyn Randall and Deesha Priyadarshani. With the weather playing a huge part in disrupting the annual athletics and swimming sports it did not dampen the enthusiasm of MacDiarmid house, With Rachael Porteous doing well at athletics and Keeha Oh making waves in the pool .

For the House afternoon MacDiarmid’s chants echoed around city central with a great result in the relay with MES winning and we were placed 1st after the point were collated. Great start to the year for us.

Swimming sports was next on the list for MacDiarmid with rain putting a dampener on the event but MacDiarmid girls were out in force with Keeha Oh was the best of MacDiarmid house in the poolWe finished up 3rd for the house points.

Now we are looking forward to Cross Country event when the streets will be covered with green runners. MacDiarmid will be ready for any challenge.

Heads House

‘Heads is RED HOT!” Heads house has started 2012 off the way we mean to go on. Our awesome team is led this year by Shayana Floyd and two prefects: Kaja Keen-Laird and La Sharn Satherley-Teece. Athletics and swimming sports were fantastic and it was wonderful to see so many Heads girls competing and getting behind their House. We are really showing the other houses that “Heads is RED HOT”.

Our tutor group rooms have been beautifully decorated in house colours and really show the Heads spirit. 2012 promises to be another great year for HEADS HOUSE.

Te Kupenga Koi Ora is our Sports and Leadership programme here at school. Te Kupenga is the shortened version of our programme name. The programme is in its first year running this year, and we are very pleased to say that the students we have currently are already demonstrating that they have what it takes to grow into positive young leaders. Te Kupenga Koi Ora’s basic translation suggests that everyone has a fishing net capable of capturing as many opportunities as they want or need. And with the right knowledge, belief and effort your Kupenga (net) can help create positive opportunities. Mission:“Providing students with an opportunity to develop stronger Personal and Social Leadership qualities for use in Sports, Education and Life” In Te Kupenga the word leadership for us consists of two important parts. One is personal leadership and the other is social leadership.

Personal Leadership skills call on useful qualities and skills such as problem solving, creativity, and personal learning strategies. Even a small increase in these three

attributes provides awareness of more options when faced with both challenges as well as opportunities. Hopefully better decision making and choices are made as our personal leadership attributes grow. Social leadership reflects on our ability to communicate clearly and effectively within groups. Communication skills are a great asset to anybody wanting to, captain a sports team, become confident doing job interviews, or for when we find ourselves having to manage our frustrations when dealing with people in a variety of settings.Within the sporting arena social leadership calls on team building abilities, and developing the trust of their peers. These attributes set people above the rest in both the sporting arena and in personal career choices.

The kaupapa for term one is to focus on team building, and positive role models.

One trip we recently completed took us to the Hamilton River City High Ropes course. We were met there by our Instructor Erica. Erica is an energetic, vocal professional with a great sense of humor that made the girls crack up. We started off on the climbing wall inside the

concrete building complex. We learnt about safety and how to belay. This helped a lot to build safety awareness and add confidence to the students that were unsure about climbing. After the wall the girls went outside and from there, they took on the High ropes course. Now it’s really high!. The high ropes course really did provide the challenge that we were hoping to provide for the girls, and by the looks on the climbers’ faces, they were definitely being challenged! Mrs Whaanga and I applauded the efforts of these students on this day. They demonstrated team work, determination, and the ability to move past fear and into a new moment of experience. Ka pai rawa atu kotiro ma!

Hamilton Girls High Touch team wins National Title

During Term 1 last year, the Hamilton Girls’ High Senior Touch team competed in the NISS touch zones and regional’s competitions. We won both tournaments which meant we had qualified for the NZSS touch nationals which were held at the end of the year in Hamilton. Our team began training early in the term 3 preparing for this competition, which included many hours of early morning fitness sessions as well as further developing our skills and team as a unit. The team was hardworking and committed as everyone wanted to achieve the ultimate goal of winning Nationals. All the hard work and commitment paid off because we came 1st at Nationals. In the final we played Mount Albert Grammar School and dominated

Although we have lost some senior players from our 2011 team we still have a dedicated team who are all working towards our goal of becoming the NZSS touch National champions for 2012 and reclaiming our title for the second year in a row.

As a result of winning the title of National Champions our team was nominated at the Waikato Secondary Schools sports awards. This year the Secondary and Waikato sports awards were combined. We got to sit along side Waikato’s elite athletes. Unfortunately we did not win the award but we enjoyed a nice evening with some of our teachers, parents and Mrs Baxter.
