Post Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care Background Information St. Gemma’s Hospice is the largest in Yorkshire providing specialist palliative care to patients with life threatening illnesses and also support for families and carers. Hospices have been beacons of excellence in palliative care since the formation of the modern hospice movement by Dame Cicely Saunders in 1967. The Post Graduate Certificate aims to take this gold standard as the foundation of education to empower clinicians from all health care settings to deliver high quality palliative care in whatever setting they work. Drive for excellence in palliative care Following the roll out of the End of Life Care Strategy by the Department of Health in 2008, there has been a national drive for training in palliative care. The strategic vision of the School of Healthcare is to translate excellence in research and scholarship into an exceptional student experience and make a major impact upon society. The Post Graduate Certificate in Palliative care will be managed through the St Gemma’s Academic Unit of Palliative Care (AUPC). International and national research The programme will draw on international and national research in particular that which is being undertaken by the research team based with the University Of Leeds Faculty Of Medicine and Health and the AUPC at St. Gemma’s Hospice, headed by Professor Mike Bennett. This includes international and national research on cancer pain management and, end of life care issues. The programme also links national and local policy to practice which is critical in supporting leadership skills and awareness of how to change clinical practice to increase quality of care and service delivery. Furthermore it draws on patient and service/user experience through programmes such as the national bereavement survey (Voices), the Leeds Health Needs Assessment and through their direct involvement in the research and teaching based in the hospice. Taught by experts The programme will be taught by lecturers and clinicians who are working in specialist palliative care, utilising up to date evidence and expertise and promoting the value of multi-disciplinary team working. It incorporates a variety of teaching and learning methods including; multi- media lectures to deliver evidenced based information; seminars that allow for facilitated group discussion; small group tutorials and practical sessions to develop specific skills. Or Opportunities for the accreditation of prior learning and prior experiential learning exist through the School's credit accumulation and transfer procedures. And Current registration with the relevant regulatory body (NMC, HCPC or GMC) with a minimum of two years post-qualifying experience and currently practising in an appropriate secondary or primary health care setting.Applicants will be expected to provide evidence of recent study - this will normally be within the last 3 years.The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) required score for admission will be 6.5 What qualifications are gained? On successful completion of this programme you will be awarded the Post Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care and will have earned 60 credits at Masters level. Students wishing to pursue further study will be able to transfer the 60 credits achieved directly in to the MSc Advanced Practice.. Free To NHS Employees Health Education Yorkshire and Humber will pay the fees for this programme for NHS employees working in the Yorkshire & Humber area. Programme content

The programme is made up of two compulsory and one optional module at M level. A choice of optional modules and different delivery time-frames makes the programme flexible and adaptable to individuals learning needs.

Who is the Programme for?

This programme is for all healthcare professionals working in areas where patients and their families receive palliative care services. The programme is aimed at those who have studied at degree level or equivalent and are looking to progress in their academic development. It is particularly relevant for those who will take a lead in palliative care provision within their area of practice as well as those who work in specialist palliative care services.
