Newsubs could fuel

Researche rs from the Derf'lKf! Science and Technology Ortllnisation (VSTO) au looking II using fuel cell ~Iflcb .. hich conveM hydrogen and oxygen into el« lricily 10 power Australi,', new Col· lins dass submarines and make 'hem "sll'lIlthier".

The fuel ce ll slacks allow thc submarine to slay submerged longer and lower the risk of radar detection in times of connict.

The fuel cells would be in addition to the submarine's normal diesel-electric power system.

MFuel cells are also environmentally friendly. They are a very efficient way of producing electricity with minimal pollution.

"" In civilian applications such as transport and power generation they could reduce global warming:' said DSTO researcher and team leader Dr David Brighton. from the DSTO Materials Research Laborato ry.

While the Navy is inte rested in a number of Air Independent Propulsion (AlP) options for the Collins class submarine, fuel cells do have advantages over other options.

"The stacks can make the submarine stealthier. They have no moving parts and arc quieter Ihan heat engines, resulting in a lower noise signature for the SUb ,M Dr Brighton said.

Because fuel cells are very efficient. the thermal signature of the sub is also decreased.

MFuel cells are a very efficient means of producing electricity from a cold reaction. The reaction takes place at around 70 degrees centigrade, producing electricity and as a by-product, water.

"The water could be used fo r washing on the submarine, or even drinking. ~

A single fuel cell can produce about 0.7 volts when loaded.

NQM philosophies have been taken seriously by HMAS NIRlMBA personnel and eagerly implemented with the relocation of Joan clothing from Naval Stores, on the edge of the base, to the Victualling Square certainly appealing to the ship's company.

The move occurred with much feverish activi ty on the part of the SNs and SVs - boxing and un-boxing of l(ne items. disassembling and assembling shelving and establishing issuing procedures.

The reloca tion has returned loan clothing to the fold . Despite late afternoon and early morning starts to en

sure relocation proceeded smoothly. the victualling staff agree the management of this important section is now in the care of professionals.

Personnel at NI RIMBA are understandably happy at the ease at which they now request loan clothing and . of course. for trainees. it means less time away from their instruction !

ABSV Duffy assumed command of the store following a 100 percent muster and is seen below authorising a transaclioll for wardroom chef ABCK George Gauci .

The first Fisheries aITes] oft the WA COK§t for 12 months has been made by HMAS BUNBURY.

The Ll AN YIH SHENG n02. over 1200.(0) worth of vessel, catch and equipment was apprehended inside the Aust ralian Fishing Zone off North West Cape.

Conducting an AFZ patrol from Perth to Broome BUNBURY (LCDR R.A. Ward) intercepted the longliner fishing inside the zone with 38 miles of line out.

She was boarded in heavy seas and escorted \0 Port Hedland where Fisheries authorities pro-

cessed the charges. A not guilty plea has

been entered and a hearing has been set for early December.

After leaving Port Hedland. BUNBURY proceeded north to act as mother ship for 3 Fisheries 19 fOOl runabou t conducting Trochus and pearl lease surveys.

While in the area landing parties conducted searches of the King Sound area .

The time at anchor proved interesting with

members of the CTew having the chance to explore the crocodile infested mangroves and waterways.

The return trip began with a rout ine check of Scott Reef.

Boardings were conducted on a large number of traditional Indonesian lype twO fish ing vessels.

The boardings discovered nothing untoward and BUNBU RY headed for home having completed a most interesting and suceessful p;otro l.
