On Monday a truly international flavour was

experienced at the Pool Olympics Day with over 300

students participating from Rosemellin, Treloweth,

Roskear, St.John’s, Illogan, Pencoys, Portreath and

Pool Academy. Each school adopted a country and

students were given a T-shirt as a memento of the

day. Countries included India, Mexico, South Africa,

Ukraine, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, and Peru. Flags

were waved, national anthems were played and

certificates and medals were a plenty.

The event was organised as part of a Get Set for 2012

grant awarded to Pool as an Olympic partner school.

Students participated in six paralympic inspired sports

which included : Wheelchair Basketball, Boccia (Bowls),

Indoor Curling, Gymnastics, Dance, Athletics and

Extreme Golf. At the end of the day students stood on

the podium and listened to their adoptive national

anthem whilst a flag was raised. Jason Webb, Assistant

Principal, who had organised this and the previous Cultural

Olympiad at Heartlands in May explained that both events

and the six week primary literacy project were all designed

to immerse the students into the life of an Olympic athlete.

Also the seven Olympic values of respect, friendship,

determination, courage, equality, excellence and

inspiration have been an integral theme throughout both

events.

The Sports Leaders and Arts and Dance student leaders

from Pool Academy also need to be thanked for the

professionalism shown in both events with their

organisation and delivery of activities to the primary

schools. The school also has 25 tickets to watch Olympic

Football at the

Millennium

Stadium, Cardiff

on 31st July so if

any student is

keen to go please

see Mr. Webb.

School Reports

Students will be bringing reports home at the end of term

Newton Faulkner is an amazing guitarist, singer and songwriter who performs and writes all of his

own music. I first discovered his music when my dad decided he would like to go and see him

perform at a charity gig in Lands End, I watched a few videoes of his on ‘you tube’ and decided I

would like to go.

Newton himself was absolutely amazing as well as being funny. He performed all of his hits including

‘Dream Catch Me’, ‘Gone in the Morning’ and many more. As it was freezing, there were only about

200 people there, me being right at the front which just added to the incredible experience. His

music inspired me to write my own, but not only is he an incredible musician but he is such a lovely

person as well. Because he inspired me so much, I went to see him again twice more, once at the

opening ceremony at Heartlands and the day after at The Princess Pavilion in Falmouth. Both times

were amazing but by far the best was the performance at Falmouth as he asked if I would like to go

backstage with him!

I thoroughly enjoyed all three of the concerts, the atmosphere was amazing and I would

recommend it to anybody!

dance and drama workshop.

taught a dance routine for an hour and Cecily Goff and Kira

DUX Award

Beth Ackerley 9MTR recently won the DUX Award

with Matthew Williams 9DSW runner-up.

They were both invited up to Cardiff University

for a tour of the campus, attending workshops and

meeting local poet and author “Catherine Fisher”, who gave them a signed copy of her latest book.

“It was a brilliant day” said Beth, “I cannot wait to go to University, there are so many more

courses and activities going on and I can now see how much more benefit I can achieve by going onto

Further Education”.

We haven't received the team results yet, but

there were some excellent Pool individual results

from sunny Par on Tuesday.

Pride of place goes to Tom Wills 8TS, with 2nd

place in the Y8 boys’ javelin (28m 76) from the 19

competing schools. Our relay teams finished the

day off superbly, with the Y7 girls 3rd in their heat

(out of 6), Y8 girls 4th, Y7 Boys 1st and Y8 boys

also 1st. In between, Harry Cantellow 7SG took 5th

in the Y7 boys 1500m (5m 46.4), Aurimas Bakunas

8JH 5th in the Y8 200m (27.6secs) and Lucille Ingleheart 7SG took 6th in the Y8 shot with 6m 81.

In the main Cornwall Schools Championships on Saturday, 7 athletes from Pool collected 12 medals

between them! Matt Jackson 9AQ took bronze in the Junior Boys 100m in 12.3secs, Matt Williams

9DSW bronze in the 400m in 59.3secs and Jordan Walklett 9SJT took silver in the triple jump

(11m 48) and a fantastic gold in the long jump (5m 62). This earned him well-deserved selection

for the SW Schools championships this Saturday at Exeter - good luck Jordan! The other medals

were earned by our relay squads, with the JB quartet of Matt Jackson, Kyle Chapman, Matt

Williams and Jordan Walklett taking 3rd in 50.7secs and the Inter Boys (Connor Davey, Matt

Eustice, Liam Roberts and Matt Jackson) a superb 2nd in 49.6secs."

County Gymnastics U12 Championships

Heather Bolton 7HR competed in the County Gymnastics Championship at Helston last

week and won Gold.

Well done Heather.
