Nature looms large in stamp issues released over July–August, the first presenting, through the remarkable illustrations of Owen Bell, four of the 200 or so frog species found in Australia. The survival of three of those shown is at serious risk, with these listed as critically endangered or endangered.
The second stamp issue released is titled Norfolk Island’s Crystal Pool, featuring a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. A natural catchment of crystal-clear sea water, Crystal Pool hosts plentiful reef fish, so snorkelling is a favoured activity in calm conditions.
August marks Stamp Collecting Month in Australia, and we are pleased to offer a new educational stamp issue for children. The five stamps feature sea creatures found in and around the Great Barrier Reef. A print technique used in creating a collector minisheet pack introduces a 3D effect, which we expect will attract special interest. The issue is also accompanied by several activity products for children.
The August issue Children’s Bush Classics celebrates the centenary of two favourites of children’s literature, both of which have never been out of print. Released in 1918, The Magic Pudding, by Norman Lindsay, and Tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie: Their Adventures Wonderful, by May Gibbs, have been delighting readers over many generations.
Our final issue in this edition shows the wonderful natural-history artwork of 19th-century artist John Gerrard Keulemans. Of special appeal to bird lovers, the stamps present four subspecies of birds endemic to Christmas Island: the Christmas Boobook, White-tailed Tropicbird, Brown Goshawk and the Christmas White-eye.
There is also a range of new stamp packs and postal and numismatic covers for collectors.

A single $1 stamp celebrates the birth of His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge on 23 April. Prince Louis is fifth in line to the throne. The arrival of a third child for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was celebrated around the world.
The choice of name for the royal baby boy is significant; “Louis” appears in the full names of the new prince’s brother and father, as well as in that of his grandfather’s great uncle and mentor, Lord Louis Mountbatten.
The stamp design captures the special moment when Prince Louis is presented to the waiting crowd on the steps of St Mary’s Hospital, London.
A Dual Celebration for the Royal Family*
This year will be remembered as one of double celebration for the royal family. On 19 May 2018 the royal wedding of HRH Prince Henry of Wales and Ms Meghan Markle took place at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
The engagement of the couple was announced in November 2017, and speculation regarding details of the wedding filled the months that followed.
The next edition of the Stamp Bulletin will present a stamp and associated products to mark the royal wedding and we announce our intention for the convenience of collectors.

Extremely sensitive to habitat conditions, frogs are important indicators of environmental health.
Australia is home to more than 200 frog species, many of which are endemic. During the 1980s, frog numbers began to decline rapidly; the reasons for this are not fully understood, but one factor is the devastating chytrid fungus and another is human impact on the environment. Three species represented in this stamp issue are classed
either critically endangered or endangered on state, national and international lists: the Armoured Mist Frog (Litoria lorica), Australian Lace-lid (Litoria dayi), and Baw Baw Frog (Philoria frosti). The fourth design shows the Tasmanian Tree Frog (Litoria burrowsae), which also has restricted distribution.

Norfolk Island NSW 2899
Access to Norfolk Island's Crystal Pool is difficult; the journey down is partly by rope.
Norfolk Island’s volcanic origins are evidenced by its rock pools, which were formed from lava beds and eroded lava tunnels. One such rock pool is Crystal Pool, which is located at Point Ross on the south-western end of the island.
On a calm, clear day, at low tide, Crystal Pool is a popular location for swimming and snorkelling, due to its crystal clear water and plentiful reef fish.
When conditions are rough, or during high tide, however, the pool is transformed by large swells and crashing waves, precluding recreational swimming and even washing in some stingrays from the ocean.
The island’s visitor information centre recommends that sightseers check the condition of the pool from the cliff top or with a local guide before venturing down.

SCM Reef Safari
11 July–August 2018
One of the world’s most remarkable natural wonders, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world. Situated off the eastern coast of Australia in the Coral Sea, it stretches for over 2,300 kilometres. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park covers an area of around 344,400 square kilometres, which is roughly the size of Japan or Italy. The largest living structure on the planet, the Great Barrier Reef is even visible from space.
The Australian government created the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in 1975 to protect the Reef and recognize its unique values. In 1981 the Reef was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and remains one of Australia’s main tourist destinations, attracting millions of visitors every year.
The Australian government and organisations are working to save the Great Barrier Reef for future generations. This year is the International Year of the Reef.
The Great Barrier Reef is urgently in need of protection. A major threat to the Reef is climate change. In recent years the corals that comprise the Reef have been severely affected by coral bleaching, which occurs when ocean waters become too warm. Scientists found that in 2016 and 2017 nearly two-thirds of the Great Barrier Reef was affected by bleaching and this killed up to 50 per cent of coral in those parts. The stamps represent five of the many creatures that depend on the Reef for survival: the Nautilus (Nautilus pompilius), Olive Sea Snake (Aipysurus laevis), Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas), Emperor Angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator) and Grey Reef Shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos).
Technical details
The Reef is composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands. The structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps. The corals secrete hard carbonate exoskeletons, which support and protect the coral polyps. A range of marine creatures is supported by the Reef’s complex natural ecosystem. This includes 600 types of soft and hard corals, more than 100 species of jellyfish, 3,000 varieties of molluscs, 500 worm species, 1,600 types of fish, 133 species of sharks and rays and more than 30 species of whales and dolphins.

The minisheet shows a section of a healthy reef teeming with life and includes brightly coloured corals. Hard corals act as building blocks for the Reef and form when colonies of coral polyps produce limestone skeletons to support themselves.
Other creatures shown are the Feather Star or Crinoid (Comantheria sp.), the sea squirt or ascidian (Rhopalaea), Giant Clam (Tridacna gigas) and Millepora sp., not a true coral but also called the Fire or Stinging Coral.

Two Australian children’s novels are celebrating their centenary in 2018: The Magic Pudding, by Norman Lindsay (1879–1969), and the first of the Snugglepot and Cuddlepie series, Tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie: Their Adventures Wonderful, by May Gibbs (1877–1969).
Filled with larrikin, sing-song language, The Magic Pudding concerns a cantankerous pudding named Albert, who is magic in the sense that no matter how much of him is eaten, he will regenerate. Being eaten is Albert’s only enjoyment in life. Lindsay wrote his first children’s book, in part to settle
an argument as to whether children liked to read about fairies or food!
Tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie: Their Adventures Wonderful tells the tales of two little gumnut foster brothers longing to see a human, who they have heard are strong and fearsome. Yet, when they witness a human rescuing a possum, they realise that humans are capable of great kindness.
May Gibbs was inspired to create these delightful characters by her early childhood experiences in the West Australian bush.

Christmas Island WA 6798
The Christmas white-eye (Zosterops natalis) is endemic to Christmas Island and its survival is threatened by habitat loss.
Dutch-born John Gerrard Keulemans (1842–1912) was a popular bird illustrator in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Based in London for most of his career, he contributed to numerous important ornithological publications.
Keulemans’ characteristically detailed, closely observed hand-coloured lithographs
used for the design of these stamps depict four bird subspecies endemic to Christmas Island: the Christmas Boobook (Ninox natalis); the White-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon lepturus fulvus); the Brown Goshawk (Accipiter fasciatus natalis) and the Christmas White-eye (Zosterops natalis).

6930226Bicentanary of the Parramatta Female Factory PPEJuly release
Bicentenary of the Parramatta Female Factory PPE
Battle of Amiens 1918 PNC Later known as the Hundred Days Offensive, the battle
ultimately led to the end of the First World War.
Governor Macquarie lay the foundation stone for Australia’s first purpose-built “female factory” on 9 July 1818. The building, designed by Francis Greenway, was based on the bridewells (workhouses) and prisons of Britain and Europe.
Some 24,960 women were transported to the Australian colonies, with around 9,000 of them experiencing the female
factory system between 1804 and 1856. More than half of these women were held at Parramatta Female Factory, where women’s work included weaving, spinning and rock breaking. The female factory was also a penitentiary, a barracks, an assignment depot and a marriage bureau.
This PPE marks the bicentenary of the heritage-listed site.
