Ana Zangroniz a volunteer with Biscayne National Park will be giving a Lionfish Education Workshop at 130pm on January 23rd 2016 at the Pompano Dive Center

The workshop will be about 15 - 2 hours long Cost for the Workshop is Free

Cost for the optional 2 tank charter will be our normal charter fee of $6500 The charter will depart at 830am and return around 1230pm We will take valuable measurements and data during the seminar for those lionfish that we catch

You can participate in either or both events We will supply a few Zookeepers on board but you will be responsible for bringing spears gloves snips etc

Most people discover that they need to turn over a new fashion leaf by accident One lady told me she realized it when she found out her childrens friends called her the Purple lady

By the time you are in your forties you would have experienced enough trials and errors to know that you are on the right track However that track can very easily turn into a fashion comfort zone and once you are rooted in it it can be very difficult to think about turning over a new fashion leaf

Wow ndash itrsquos 2016 When I thought about the upcoming New Year this year for some reason I reflected back on Y2K Who could believe that was 16 years ago At that time I was still a newlywed and was kid free That year there was so much hustle and bustle surrounding reprogramming

computers and clocks that it is hard to forget that particular year I remember my New Year resolution that year very clearly and it was to lose weight ndash so many people have that resolution It seems as if so many New Year resolutions are focused on weight loss or kicking bad habits

Prior to 2015 all of my resolutions were personal in nature (most resolutions are) and very rarely did I attain my goal I became unmotivated and honestly forgot that I even had a resolution come March Last year my family and I started a new tradition We decided not to have personal resolutions but to

make resolutions as a family We sat around the kitchen table and made a list of five items that we would work on together We put our list of resolutions on a piece of chart paper and hung it on the wall so that we were always reminded of them This system worked very well because one of my sons is great at reminding us of what the resolutions are and kept us all on track We even charted our progress on the goals along the way

Creating resolutions as a family keeps you focused

and brings your family closer together

So now that 2015 has ended you may be asking if we successfully completed all of the items on our list Honestly only some

of them We attained our first goal of moving and the attainment of that goal hampered the attainment of other goals because we ended up being separated for a pretty long period of time however the lack of attainment of all of our goals from our 2015 list has not decreased our motivation but increased it for 2016

This year we have made new goals and plan on working very hard as a family to attain them Not only does

creating these items in a group keep you focused it also brings our family closer together I am very excited about seeing the outcomes of our group effort at the end of 2016

A solid plan to do better next time

indicators that the District is creating and strengthening a framework for students to turn over a new leaf has been the focus on continuous student progress monitoring student tracking of their own learning and increased differentiated instruction trainings Additionally not meaning to get too specific about discipline but the District has made a major push to increase student achievement through Multi-Tiered System of Supports and a high quality Response to Interventions Process Broward County Public Schools is the sixth largest school district in the nation and from my perspective I am impressed that a district so populous is making such great strides to impact each individual student

Michael DiPierro has a decade of experience in education He currently holds a Masters degree in Educational Leadership and is an Instructional Specialist with Broward County Public Schools

F or most students in the Broward County Public School system second quarter interim reports were issued in November and report cards will be sent home in late January As a teacher I can remember using these formal performance reports as a platform to encourage my students to ldquokeep up the hard workrdquo and ldquodo better next timerdquo In essence I was attempting to motivate my struggling students to turn over a new leaf which leads me to wonder what it truly means for a student to turn over a new leaf and what factors contribute to this leaf turning moment Fittingly my academic leaf turning moment was connected to a less than stellar report card that I received as a middle school student To the best of my recollection this report card consisted of mostly the letter ldquoCrdquo with a lonely ldquoArdquo in Art As I tried to use that ldquoArdquo in Art to lessen my motherrsquos disappointment in my academic performance she told me that Art was not important and that I must do better in the ldquoreal subjectsrdquo So the next report card I brought home consisted of ldquoArsquosrdquo and ldquoBrsquosrdquo in the ldquoreal subjectsrdquo and a ldquoDrdquo in the aforesaid ldquonot importantrdquo subject of Art

Needless to say my Eastern European mother did not find any irony in this new leaf I turned Subsequently she explained that this report card proved that I could do well in school and my academic performance was connected to the effort that I was willing to put into my coursework That ldquoDrdquo in seventh grade art was the last time I ever earned a grade lower than a ldquoBrdquo and I must mention that this streak managed to somehow survive graduate level statistics on my masters degree journey and advanced statistics in pursuit of a doctorate

I cannot claim to know what the academic leaf turning process means to the over 250000 students attending a Broward County Public School or what will trigger this experience What I do know is that our teachers and administrators are tirelessly working and committed to increasing student achievement and individualizing education for each student This is not an easy process and results are not always immediate or clearly evident but based on my seven years of classroom experience and four years supporting teachers from the district office I know good things are happening in Broward County Public Schools To this point Superintendent Robert Runcie was named Floridas Superintendent of the Year and the District has a new Chief Academic Officer whose early actions have revealed a commitment to the success of all our students Some

Were pretty sure that if you look up both earnest and self-effacing in the dictionary youll find a photo of Rick Hamilton Youd probably see it again as well - maybe under driven

Rick is the Operations Director of The Foundry the newest restaurant to join our nascent restaurant scene Despite its decor harkening back to simpler even plainer times this is no plain and simple establishment Every detail from the Chicago brick to the open-air bar seating (outside) to the beautifully presented dishes is in line with the Foundrys goal to be The ultimate destination to share great experiences with friends and family

Rick is no stranger to the restaurant business he got his first job at the age of 13 Fast forward a few years with over 15 years at Brus Room (taking them from one location to their current ten) the Foundry is his newest venture one where his philosophy of what a dining experience should be is clearly in evidence

We dont have customers We have guests Rick tells us When I open the doors at 400 Irsquom opening the door to my house When you throw a party at your house you want to make sure the foodrsquos great the house is immaculate the cocktails are ready and you have what people want to drink Wersquore throwing a little party every shift I want guests to walk in and see a smile on their faceswhen you dine out you want to escape the real world

The Foundry doesnt have employees either Rick is equally passionate about this They have associates I want someone to come in and take ownership ldquoWhat if rdquo are two of my favorite words What if we did this What if we tried that

Whats the one thing Rick wants people to know about The Foundry Itrsquos an overall experience from the atmosphere to the quality of service to the eclectic menu to the fresh beverage and cocktails program We want to create an overall dining experience from the quality of service we provide to the made from scratch menu to the seafood brought in daily everything is oak grilled We do it to the highest degree of quality but with fun and pizzazz and personality We donrsquot want to be uptight or robotic or stiff ndash Irsquom an

old school guy When yoursquore going out to eat yoursquore celebrating

After a somewhat peripatetic childhood Ricks been in South Florida since 1996 so hes been an eyewitness to the growth and change throughout the area and in Pompano Beach in particular What does he see for the future of Pompano Beach I see no reason he asserts that Atlantic Boulevard cant be a dining destination - like Las Olas Boulevard or Atlantic Avenue

Indeed The future seems so close we can taste it And thanks for inviting us to your house Rick We had a wonderful time and we cant wait to visit again

bull Cook bacon in large sauteacute pan until cooked but not overcooked because it will continue cooking in oven

we gained a few pounds since we found an excuse to indulge in holiday libations and favorites we will have to adjust to our daily schedule and with that comes the fact that we will have to turn a

new leaf for the new year and start fresh including starting with our New Yearrsquos Resolutions Research shows that over 50 of our resolutions are abandoned within the first month of the year So here is a simple and easy resolution that we canrsquot afford to abandon - proper car maintenance With regular basic car care we will save money in the long run

It is always best to start the New Year by going back to the basics and getting a general inspection on the vehicle after the wear and tear of the summer A new set of windshield wipers for safety and a good clean and wax job would really help with the car paint condition and of course it is always pleasant to have a nice clean car

So if we are to have a list of what needs to be checked we will have the following

1 Regular oil changes When it comes to routine maintenance an oil and oil filter change is an inexpensive service but it is vital for the health of the engine Having regular oil changes prevents carbon and varnishes from accumulating in the engine and keeps all the engine components functioning properly

2 Brakes Have your mechanic evaluate your brake pads and rotors every oil change to make sure that you are safe on the road Tires and brakes are what keep the car rolling on the street For many brake issues your first indicator

is through driver feel - if you notice a vibration that it takes more force to stop the vehicle or hear a high pitched noise If you are in this situation it is highly recommended to drive very slowly and get to your shop because the brake pads are low and this is a warning sign

3 Vehicle Fluids It is very important to have the fluids (such as the antifreeze power steering coolant transmission wiper fluidshellip) checked and topped off if needed Depending on the mileage and the health of your vehicle a transmission or steering fluid flush would be recommended because after

some time and depending on the mileage or if you are driving in stressful conditions (speeding racing lack of maintenance) the fluids deteriorate or lose their potency Fluids just like the engine oil are vital because they keep all the vehiclersquos moving parts lubricated

4 Belts Depending on the mileage it is recommended to inspect the belts Depending on manufacturerrsquos recommendations the timing belt is usually replaced every 60000 miles or so and your serpentine belt replaced every 40000 miles give or take

5 Tires If you are having hard time keeping the car straight then an alignment is the cure It is highly recommended to have the tires rotated and balanced and your alignment checked on a regular basis This will save your tires Tires wear evenly and the car will drive smoothly

6 Spark Plugs Spark plugs can age and the sharp edges will wear down or will be covered in buildup and thus more voltage is required to

start the vehicle If the spark plugs are not generating enough sparks the battery will get drained the engine may misfire or surge the car may not start So keep your eye on the spark plugs or have your mechanic inspect and report on the state of the plugs

7 Air Filters 2 important filters to mention The cabin air filter needs to be replaced on a regular basis (depending on the manufacturerrsquos recommendations) The cabin air filter prevents pollutants from entering the vehiclersquos cabin We really donrsquot want to breathe the gases that our car is spitting out The most important filter is the engine air filter Having a clean filter will improve carrsquos performance reduce gas consumption and will keep your engine running smoothly

The leaves I need to turn over are the ones that I let slowly wither away due to my own irresponsible behavior

It all started three years ago I had a flourishing lawn but there were there these pesky moths So in order to keep it healthy I grabbed the brown bottle from the shed and mixed it up to spray those insects away Within three days there was not a blade of green flourishing grass to be seen Apparently that brown bottle without the label was not the moth killing agent I assumed it to be Turned out to be a little chemical named KillzAll

That was the first massacre And thatrsquos where my relationship with aforementioned man started

I told him I had a clean slate of a yard an empty palette for him to get as creative as he wanted to be During his first visit he wisely concluded grass may not be for me on the next go around Mulchhellipand a lot of it That was the way to go Maybe even xeriscape

We had a plan and scheduled a date of execution He understandably requested that I stay far away until him and his crew were gone As if my mere presence could harm the installation of the Xanadursquos and palm trees I found it hard to argue So I went off to work Upon my return I had a beautiful garden oasis It was a fresh start All dead grass had been carted away and they had replaced it with plants this man thought I could not kill Things that required little or no effort

I had such great intentions I went outside every day I plucked weeds and I picked up leaves I pinched back the few flowering plants he allowed me to have But seasons passed I came out one day to find the first casualty A Penta had withered and died It all went downhill from there

So I made that call And he agreed to come back Like magic I left for the day and when I returned all was forgiven Everything was back to the original state That was two years ago And the next year And the one after that

Those leaves Irsquom just accepting the fact that the best way for me to turn them over is to have my friendly landscape artist plant new ones I make no excuses and I know my limits I just plant more of what managed to survive my neglect

It seems to us that what this articulate thoughtful energetic supporter of the arts is really saying is My job is to do what Ive done in other cities all over the world most notably Paris where she was one of the founding board members of the American Friends of the The Museacutee dOrsay and also chaired the Young Patrons Group

Sarah has a seemingly inexhaustible supply of energy when it comes to supporting the arts and the artists Since graduating from Boston University she has spent time managing the photography department (and serving as the in-house photographer) at Madison Square Garden and was most recently the Education Programmer at the Norton Museum of Art I love what I do she tells us Its inspiring

She particularly enjoys having interns seeing it as a way of both giving back and nurturing the next generation

into town on the heels of a threatening December storm which was courteous enough to pass by just in time for the festivities to begin Whats a little water among boaters anyway

back in 2006 I hit a MAJOR crossroads in business I had to decide to give up the business that I thought I should be doing to dive into the business that actually made sense Keep in mind this is my experience and not everyone will have the same outcome There are plenty of entrepreneurs that are successful in business by following their true passions Then there is a group of us that are having fun and enjoying the ldquoideardquo of being an entrepreneur But are we really following our passions or is it the idea of it all In 2006 I realized that I loved the idea of being an entrepreneur and all that came with the journey but the industry chosen did not fit my long-term goals So I turned over a new leaf closed the business rebranded and was ready for the next chapter

Turning over a new leaf can be life changing in business Letrsquos jump right in

What is the ldquoleaf rdquo that needs to be turned over What is ldquoitrdquo that has to change Whatrsquos bothering you For me I was tired of fighting that ldquoinner voicerdquo of failure I came to realize that the ldquoinner voicerdquo was actually not failure ndash it was intuition you know - that gut feeling I knew that I wanted to be an entrepreneur set my own hours go to an office network and all of that good stuff But was I truly enjoying the work and everything I was doing ndash no It was a hard decision to close my business But it was the best thing for me Is there something that needs to change in your current situation An employee a shift in the way you do things or a new set of goals to focus on Figure out what the ldquoleaf rdquo is and turn it over

Before we begin congrats on your success with Kill Em All When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act produce and writeGrowing up in the Midwest requires a good imagination at times As a child I can remember watching network television and wanting the life of an actor and show writer because it allowed me to dream of many different lifestyles and story scenarios

What inspires you to act produce and writeMy biggest inspiration for acting producing and writing a TV style show is standing on set of a show that I created in my mind and how awesome it feels to see talented actors and crew members make my thoughts come to life I am also thankful to have some close friends who have been successful in the industry so this gives me inspiration that I will also have success in my craft

When did you realize you had reached your goals as an actorproducerAnyone that knows me would say that I am my toughest critic I am not yet where I see myself when Irsquom finished however I am very proud of the series starting from nothing and quickly becoming an award winning show that is watched around the world

What was your favorite role to date and whyNot to be completely biased but I love playing the role of Carson McCullough in the Kill Em All series This character says and does sometimes the unthinkable however his willingness to continue to fight against dangerous adversaries explains why I like Carson so much In my opinion his story is one of many who are living in a hard reality of being forced to fight against evil and wrongdoers to achieve his goals

What do you enjoy most about your careerKnowing that there is an audience that enjoys my style of writing and stories fills me with energy to continue on the road of entertainment Can we expect a book from youThis is a great question because before I started filming the Kansas City show I had talks with an award winning author about a series of books based on the online series Regarding a tell all biography itrsquos not time yethellip I have also begun designing a comic book series to follow the digital online series

With all the social media outlets that are out there I would say Irsquom still very connected to my audience via Facebook but I am also doing my best to be more active on Twitter and Instagram
