• Polio is an infectious disease which destroys the nerve cells that enable the muscles to work in the body.

• Symptoms: fever, malaise, headache, sore throat, vomiting, stiff neck, stiff back, deep muscle pain, and abnormal sensations.

• Can cause paralysis-the wasting of muscle tissue-and can cause deformity.

• The disease mainly occurs in children.

• Polio was once an epidemic in the U.S.

• Vaccines are weakened or killed pathogens that cause the body to make antibodies and remember the virus. In Afghanistan, A boy is vaccinated against

polio.

• American physician Jonas Salk invented a vaccine for Polio in 1953.

• The vaccine was tested on monkeys.

• In August 1954, four million vaccinations were given.

• In 1960, Albert Sabin created an oral vaccine for Polio.

• Sabin’s vaccine became more widely used. An Australian girl receives the Salk

Polio vaccine.

• The vaccines reduced the cases of Polio in the U.S. drastically.

• There were 58,000 cases of polio in 1952; 2,500 cases of polio in 1960; 61 cases of polio in 1965; and in 1994 Polio was eradicated from the U.S.
