HERPES Herpes is an infection that is caused by a herpes simplex virus (HSV).

Oral herpes causes cold sores around the mouth or face.

Genital herpes affects the genitals, buttocks or anal area.

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

It affects the genitals, buttocks or anal area.

The virus can be dangerous in newborn babies or in people with weak immune systems.

There are two types of HSV:( Herpes simplex virus)

HSV type 1 most commonly causes cold sores. It can also cause genital herpes.

HSV type 2 is the usual cause of genital herpes, but it also can infect the mouth.

(Symptoms) How do I know if I have genital

herpes?

Most people who have herpes have no, or very mild symptoms.

Cracked, raw, or red areas around your genitals without pain, itching,

Itching around your genitals or your anal region

Small blisters that break open and cause painful sores.

These may be on or around your genitals (penis or vagina) or on your buttocks, thighs, or rectal area.

Headaches

Backaches

Flu-like symptoms, including fever, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue

HSV-1 Cold sore HSV-2 Genital Herpes

How is genital herpes spread? You can get herpes by having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has

the disease.

Fluids found in a herpes sore carry the virus, and contact with those fluids can cause infection.

Treatment:

Treatment with antiviral drugs can help people to reduce the severity

There are three major drugs commonly used to treat genital herpes symptoms:

acyclovir (Zovirax),

famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex).

These are all taken in pill form.

Severe cases may be treated with the intravenous (IV) drug acyclovir.

POLIOPoliomyelitis Poliomyelitis

Polio or poliomyelitis,

Poliomyelitis, literally meaning “gray spinal cord inflammation

Poliomyelitis is a viral disease.

caused by the poliovirus ,a highly contagious virus specific to humans.

Polio can infect a person of any age, but children 5 and under are especially vulnerable

The virus is found in saliva and feces of sick people.

Types of Polio There are three types of polio infections:

1) Paralytic:

rarest and most serious form of polio, produces full or partial paralysis in the patient. There are three types of paralytic polio:

i) spinal polio (affects the spine) ii) bulbar polio (affects the brainstem)

iii) bulbospinal polio (affects the spine and brainstem).

2) Non-paralytic:

It does affect the central nervous system, produces only mild symptoms and does not result in paralysis.

3) Sub-clinical:

This form of polio does not affect the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord).

patients may not experience any symptoms.

Entrance

The virus enter through mouth and nose, multiplies in pharynx(throat) and gastrointestinal tract, then moves into the bloodstream and is carried to the

central nervous system where it replicates and destroys the motor neuron cells.

Motor neurons control the muscles for swallowing, circulation, respiration, and the trunk, arms, and leg

Incubation period Incubation period ranges from 5-35 days (7-14 days

average)

Symptoms

What are the symptoms of polio?

Non-paralytic polio (abortive poliomyelitis) leads to flu-like symptoms such as

fever, sore throat, headache, vomiting, fatigue, back and neck pain, arm and leg stiffness, muscle tenderness, muscle spasms, and meningitis, that last for a few days or weeks,

Paralytic polio will often begin with symptoms similar to non-paralytic polio, but will progress to more serious symptoms such as

a loss of muscle reflexes, severe muscle pain and spasms, and loose or floppy limbs that is often worse on one side of the body.

Transmission

It can be spread

by direct contact with sick persons

or through the air when a sick person talks,

coughs, or sneezes.

It is also spread by food, water, or hands

contaminated with infected feces.

Treatment

How is polio treated?

There is no cure for polio once a person becomes infected.

Therefore, treatments are focused on increasing comfort, managing symptoms, and preventing complications.

This may include providing bed rest,

Antibiotics for additional infections, pain killers, ventilators to help breathing,

Physiotherapy and moderate exercise, and a proper diet.

Prevention

How can polio be prevented?

Vaccination

There are two vaccines available to fight polio –

inactivated poliovirus (IPV). injections beginning two months after birth and continuing until a child is 4 to 6 years old. it is very safe and effective and cannot cause polio.

and

Oral polio vaccine (OPV). OPV is created from a weakened or attenuated form of poliovirus. OPV, however has been known to revert to a dangerous form of poliovirus that is able to paralyze its victim.

Widescreen Pictures

Creating 16:9 Presentations

Important: Always start with your slide size set to the aspect ratio you intend to use. If you change the slide size after you’ve created some slides, your pictures and other graphics will be resized. This could potentially distort their appearance.

To setup a widescreen presentation, do one of the following:

Start with this template. Simply delete the example slides and add your own content.

Or, go to the Design tab and open the Page Setup Dialog. Click the Slide Size dropdown and pick On-screen Show (16:9) (Note: we also support 16:10, which is a common widescreen laptop resolution. )

Slide Show Tips

To present in true widescreen, you’ll need a computer and, optionally, a projector or flat panel that can output widescreen resolutions.

Common computer widescreen resolutions are 1280 x 800 and 1440 x 900. (These are 16:10 aspect ratio, but will work well with 16:9 projectors and screens.)

Standard high definition televisions resolutions are1280 x 720 and 1920 x 1080.

Use the Test Pattern on the next slide to verify your slide show settings.
