VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL “Colossal Coaster World” is coming to Union Baptist Church! We will learn together how to face our fears and trust God by doing so! The week has been set for June 17—June 21th from 9 am until Noon for those 4 yrs old through 5th grade. SOOO, in order for this to be a huge success, we need you! As your “Park Director,” I’ll need “Guides” to take the kids from site to site, I need a Games Coordinator, and various other leaders. Remember the sooner you commit, the more you are assured the group you would like to work

with. Youth, this means you too! If you have missed the last couple of years, you’ve missed a great time! Sign up to be a VBS “Guide” now! You won’t want to miss a single day!

Our first meeting will be Thursday, April 4th at 7pm in the Legacy Center! If you have questions about VBS or already know where you want to work, give Miss Pat a call! If you are working in VBS, t-shirts are available for purchase. This year, the cost is $8.00. All t-shirts will need to be purchased by June 5th. Any un-purchased t-shirts will be returned on Monday, June 10th. Key, kids: start saving that change, especially pennies! We’ll have our annual penny war and all funds will go to purchase toys for our Appalachian Toy Drive. The class with the highest offering will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the prize this year! Let me just say, no wet sponges this year! It’s even better!!!!

CENTRI-KID 2013 Reservations have long been made for the week of June 9th—13th. Male and female chaperones are in place. The excitement is certainly building for kids and adults alike. ALL BALANCES ARE DUE IN FULL BY SUNDAY, May 19th. There will be a CAMP MEETING ON SUNDAY, MAY 5th, following the 11am worship service. Information packets, permission slips and NEW INFORMA-TION will be given out at this time. If you have a child going to camp, please make every effort to attend.

BABY DEDICATION DAY “Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light.” James 1:17 Now, you are being given the opportunity to give that gift back to the Lord. This special day will take place on Sunday, May 12th during our morning worship service at 11am. If you wish to participate, please see Miss Pat by Sunday, April 28th. She will need the following information: your child’s full name, date of birth, and 2 to 3 pictures that will be returned. You can email these pictures to her as well.

PAGE 2 THE TRIUMPH A PLACE OF HOPE!

Dear Friends, During our “Journey to Easter” series, we had opportunity to be inspired by those whose lives were dramatically transformed by their faith in Christ. My daily prayer for our church is that we’d be willing to attempt great things for God’s glory. This willingness on our part will certainly challenge us, remove us from our comfort zones, and lead us to attempt new and exciting things to reach our community. I hope we’ll be both sensi-tive to God’s leading, and willing to step out into the waters with bold faith that Christ can keep us afloat. Churches unwilling to trust God in this way soon shrivel up and die. An unwillingness to step out into new arenas can stifle our growth. The reality of this can be seen in both the church and business world. One recent example of this is the Kodak Company. This company has been around and recognized for over 130 years, but that may soon change. The monumental photography giant was once among the original Dow Jones index 100 companies, and its stock once traded for nearly $100 per share. With Kodak’s inability to get their stock back up to $1, for some time now, they have faced a strong possibility of bankruptcy. When George Eastman founded his company, he made up the name “Kodak” because he said the letter “K”

was “strong and incisive.” It became one of the most recognizable brand names in the world, boasted a portfolio of 11,000 patents, and cor-nered nearly two-thirds of the global market on color-film sales. Kodak invented the world’s first digital camera in 1975, but, as experts say, the company started exercising “excessive caution” and that led to its demise in the digital age that, ironically, they helped create. The company that was founded with a “strong and incisive” name, is on the brink of extinction because cau-tion became its greatest value. In the kingdom of this world, healthy risks are sometimes a necessary dynamic for

the success of any individual or business. In the kingdom of God, we call this faith. As we more forward from the celebra-tion of Easter, and remember the incredible and sacrificial faith of the early church, may we be willing to follow their example. The souls of too many people all around us are dependent upon our holding firm to the gospel as we hold on equally firm to the myriad of ways God would lead us to get outside the walls of our church to share it.

See You Sunday,

Pastor Kevin

I hope that everyone had a great March. I want to extend one more word of thanks to all that helped with DNOW. It was a great weekend and it couldn’t have happened without your help! Upcoming events this month:

April 7: Viewing of The Passion of the Christ 9-12 Graders Location: Jason and Allisa Wilhelmus’ home

3116 Piney Creek Circle, Burlington KY

The Passion of the Christ All 9-12 graders are invited to Jason and Allisa Wilhelmus' home to watch The Passion of the Christ. This will take place on Sun-day, April 7 following the second service. Lunch will be provided. Also, during the movie, Jason, Allisa, and myself will be available to answer any questions that may arise during this dramatic tell-ing of the death and resurrection of Christ. The movie is rated R for sequences of graphic violence. The film is also very intense and can be frightening at times. I am sure many of you have seen this film before, but if you have not, I encourage you to watch it yourself, or look up the content advisory before allowing your child to join us; just to make sure you are comfortable with your child viewing such content. You can view content informa-tion at the following websites: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0335345/parentalguide?ref_=tt_stry_pg

OR http://www.pluggedin.com/videos/2005/q1/passionofthechrist.aspx

If you have any questions about this film, feel free to ask.

Scripture Memory for Camp There are 10 memory verses available on the table outside the Youth Room for any students going to camp. If your student memorizes these verses by May 5, they will earn $25 toward their camp costs. They must memorize all 10 verses (along with their references), and be able to recite them to me, in order to have the $25 taken off their camp balance. We will not provide partial discounts for partial verse memorization (ex. A student only memorized 8 verses, they do not receive a $20 discount). Please encourage your students to take part in memorizing these verses. Scripture memorization is incredibly important in the life of a Christian, especially when sharing the Gospel with some-one. So it will be a great help to our students this summer at camp as they take part in various mission projects.

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teach-ing, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness"

2 Timothy 3:16

MISSION FUGE Dates: June 24-28 Location: The University of the Cumberlands Cost: $300 per student

Don’t forget that final camp payments need to be made by May 19! Feel free split up payments over the next few months. If you need to know your student’s current balance let me know and I will let you know.

Many members of our UBC family sponsor children in other countries through organizations such as Compassion Interna-tional and World Help. As a church, we are touching children around the world with the love of Christ! We would like to cre-ate a map of the world that shows all of the areas where UBC is making a different through child sponsorships. If you currently sponsor a child, we would like to ask you to provide the following information: Your name, your sponsored child’s name, gender, country where child lives, and organization you sponsor through. If you would like to also provide a photo of your spon-sored child, please feel free to include that as well. Please send this information to Denise Davidson at [email protected] by Sunday, April 14.

On Sunday, April 21 UBC will once again host a “Compassion Sunday” where members of our UBC family will have the oppor-tunity to sponsor a child through Compassion International. A table will be set up in the narthex of the church for both the 9 am and 11 am services that day.

Hope for My Sister Working Meetings On the 2nd Saturday of each month, indi-viduals interested in helping with Hope for My Sister are meeting at UBC, right after the 9 am prayer time. Anyone interested in helping with this ministry, in any way, please consider joining us on these Saturdays! The next meet-ing is April 13! Areas where we especially need help include: Development of Biblical curriculum/training materials to train

women in several Haitian churches to be equipped with resources to begin helping female victims of abuse in Haiti (initial training to occur in Haiti this July)

Marketing & fundraising

Special Visitor from Haiti On Sunday, April 14 at 6 pm service, Sherrie Fausey, Director

of Christian Light School and Children’s Home in Haiti will be joining us to talk about the work her ministry does in Haiti. Sherrie was a school teacher in Jacksonville, Florida and in 2000 she moved to Haiti to start a school in one of the most impoverished areas of Port au Prince to educate Christian men and women

who could go forth to change their country for the better and foster strong Christian leadership in Haiti. Every team that has gone to Haiti from UBC has spent time at Sherrie’s and we all love her very much. Please come out and meet Sherrie at this service and hear more about what her ministry is doing.

July 2013 Trip The next UBS trip to Haiti will be July 5-13, 2013. Please be in prayer for the team making this trip, that God will go before us and open many doors of opportunity to change and be changed, for His glory!

HAITI MINISTRY NEWS

UBC VIPs – Meet the Musicians Each week at Union Baptist Church, there is a special group of people passionately serving God to enhance your worship experience. Some weeks they are serving up in front, and some weeks they are serving in the seat next to you; but each week they are using the gifts that God has so generously bestowed upon them. They are our musicians. Our Praise Band leads in worship each week through instrumentation. From drums and bongos to piano and keyboards, this dedicated group practices week after week to bring us into God’s presence through music. Our pianists include Becky Kelley, Rani Peffer, Jeff Blankenship, Denise Mau and Melanie Pikar. We are so incredibly blessed that they feel God’s call to share their special talents with us in this way. Serving on the guitars are Andrew Bockelman, Jeff Sluder and John Groat-house. On the bass guitars are Steve Sorrell and Dustin Graham. The drums are played by Ryan Forman and Tony Scott. Once a month we are blessed with the smooth tones of Rusty Byrd on the saxophone. Finally, we have an orchestra that works hard to bring an even different element of music to us. Our worship is enhanced in incredible ways by these instrumen-talists. In addition to instruments, our choirs and praise teams bring an element of songs and voices in worship. The Union Baptist Church Celebration Choir practices tirelessly to sing praises to God. Members also serve in the praise teams and small groups such as quartets. Members of our youth choir, Grounded, also practice week after week to join in the singing. The Children’s choir and the preschool choir raise their voices as well. Our worship pastor, Arnie Forman, is passionate about the importance of the element of music in our worship. He takes very seriously God’s word to us that says: “Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.” Psalms 150:3-6 (NIV) If you are interested in getting plugged into one of our music ministries, please contact Arnie or any of the musicians listed

above. Even if you are not a part of one of our music ministries here at Union Baptist Church, you are a huge part of the

praises that we lift to the Lord in worship. Psalms 100 says: Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. 2 Serve the Lord

with gladness: come before his presence with singing. We all join together in singing and shouting praise to our Audience of

One!
