MARILYN R. SKOWARTISTIC DIRECTOR ANDCHAIR, FIU THEATRE

A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Welcome to FIU Theatre’s 2011-2012 season. We have an exciting lineup of shows this year with an eclectic mix of plays that will offer something for everyone to enjoy.

The season starts with a wild and wacky play called Swimming in the Shallows by Adam Bock, moves on to the evocative The House of the Spirits by Caridad Svich and based on the novel by Isabel Allende, takes a peek into the home and private offi ce of a scientifi c doctor with unforeseen consequences in In the Next Room (The Vibrator Play) by Sarah Ruhl, and fi nishes up with Mary Zimmerman’s celebration of the power of imagination in her play The Arabian Nights.

This year we are adding two new features that will enrich your theatre-going experience, both included in your admission price. The fi rst feature—Inside Scoop— is a half hour presentation with a question and answer period during which members of the production team and select cast members will discuss their experience preparing the show, including how they arrived at the approach for the show, challenges they faced during rehearsal, and things to look for as you are watching the play. Inside Scoop will take place on the Wednesday night of the second week of the run of each show. The second feature—Theatre of the Mind—will present a group of three expert panelists and a moderator who will make short presentations on some aspect of the show you have just seen. The moderator will then fi eld questions from the audience about the show or their presentations. Theatre of the mind is presented after the fi rst Sunday matinee of the run of each show.

Our productions serve as our laboratory in which students put into practice what they are learning. Their talent, hard work, professionalism and dedication are amazing. We thank you for your support of FIU Theatre and hope you will enjoy our productions as much as we enjoy creating them.

A fully ordained monk is supposed to own only eight things— three robes, an alms bowl, a razor, needle and thread, belt, and a strainer to purify drinking water. He is also obliged to abide by the 227 rules contained in the Buddhist scripture.

Life is never simple.

Here are eight things Swimming in the Shallows by Adam Bock is not really about: swimming, monks, gay marriage, quitting smoking, Rhode Island, sex, cat bowls, and sharks. It is really about all those things and a million others that fill up our complicated lives. And, it is mostly about those to whom we turn when all those “things” overwhelm us: our friends and lovers.

Life is never simple.

Therapy can only do so much. We need friends and lovers who have a proprietary interest in our triumphs and failures, our ups and downs, our truths and lies. Someone who is not neutral; who will call you out on your stuff. Who else will be cruel to be kind, and then later be there with a shoulder for you to cry on?

Life is never simple. Not for anybody. You are not alone. You have Barb, Bob, Donna, Carla Carla, Nick, and the Shark. They are just like you and yours—only different.

Enjoy.
