Our entrepreneurs come from 47 countries throughout the world. They are building the new American economy in the Bay Area.

Agnes started Kenyan Safari Designs to bring Kenyan necklaces, earrings, carved wooden animals, bowls, utensils and other handmade African decor to the Bay Area. Agnes has a close relationship with the impoverished Kenyan women who make her products, and she is dedi-cated to helping them improve their lives. She currently sells Kenyan jewelry and artifacts at the Ashby Flea Market, and she is seeking to open a storefront space this year.

Juan Carlos comes from a family of entrepreneurs—his grandmother was a knitter, his grandfather owned a bakery, and his uncles were shoemakers. Juan Carlos learned how to upholster from his father, and has followed the family tradition in successful artisan entrepreneurship. Juan Carlos owns and operates Intra Upholstery, which specializes in wall upholstery, custom furniture design, antique restoration, and general reupholstery services.

Yamile owns and operates Eagle’s Nest Daycare, where she caretakes for children in the South Bay. Yamile states, “Before AnewAmerica, I didn’t have many children in my daycare. Now, my daycare is full. AnewAmerica helped me to write my busi-ness plan and encouraged me to expand my business. They also helped me to receive a wonderful grant from the City of Sunny-vale.” Yamile plans to open a preschool in the summer of 2012.

Maria decided to launch a green cleaning business after witnessing the harmful health impacts of conventional cleaning products. Maria’s green cleaning business is dedicated to using safe, environmentally-friendly and biodegradable cleaning products. Maria states, “I am very concerned about the state of the planet. In every way possible, I want to imple-ment steps that lead to less environmental impact and less waste.”

Dolma’s business, Harmony Carpets, specializes in designing and producing custom, handmade Tibetan carpets, in both traditional and modern patterns. In Nepal, where her rugs are made, Dolma is help-ing impoverished communities to earn a livelihood. The natural wool used in her carpets is produced sustainably. The wool is handspun and dyed naturally using plants and minerals, and hand-woven by Tibetan artisans. As a single mother caretaking for her own mother, Dolma’s business helps her to support her family.
