    CHRISTMAS

    NEWSLETTER 1976

    Dear Ones

    in Christ,

    At

this time of year the world

    seems

    to turn toward Christ

    for

    a

    few

    days.

    But we Christians

    taice

    Him

    with

    us

    daily.

    I know

    that

    I

    would never

want to face a single day

    without

    Him.

    Oh, how

    very

    much

    do the lost souls

    of

this world miss out simpdy because they refuse to

    accept Christ as their Lord

    and Savior. Things are

    not setting well in

    the world scene here

    in

Germany because the German people have no room

    for Christ. Daily

    I shake

    my

head and ask the Lord hew much

    longer

    this

    sin sick

    world

    can go

    on without

killing itself. My prayer is that

    God

    will stir up within

    His

    children such a yearning

    for

    these lost souls

    around each one

    of us

    that we

will do everything we can to

    show

    them to

Christ. The world needs Christ more now

    than

    ever before. Let

    us

    show

    them Christ

    in

His fullness and glory especially during this season

    when they

    do make a small

    effort

    to turn

    in His

    direction.

    Let

    us live

Christ before the world and shower it with His love so that no one can

    say

    to

    us "why

    didn't

    you

    show me Christ?" We wish

    each of you

    a

    Christ

    centered

    New Year

    and

    that

    each day

    will be one spent

    in

    God's love.

    It looks

    as

    though

    the

    family

    doctor was right-Alva

    has

    low blood

    pressure,

    weak nerves

    and

    a

    busy schedule.

    This implies

    a

    rough time for

him and a slow return te

    recovery.

    Alva finds it

    hard

    to relax but he is

    trying.

Debbie's piano lessons are coming along fine-as long as her home

    work doesn't

    take up all her

    practice

    time. She

    enjoys

    playing

    Bac i ^,

    Schumann

    and

    Mozart. She really

    enjoys

    school

    and

    her music.

    Debbie is

    so German now

    she

    seems to

    enjoy only

German food. We are very proud of

    our daughter and

    her

    love for her Lord.

    Our sincere

    thanks

    to

    all of you

    wno made the purchase

    of

    the

    press possible.

    It

has been installed and works fine

    \ ind er

    the direction

    of

    Jay Enck. Janice is still

    learning to operate the

    press and soon

    will

    have it mastered. The

    Lord

    provided us with

    plenty

    of

    printing

    to do.

    This

    is

why the press was purchased and why we stressed the urgent

    need.

    Your

    prayers and

    support

    in

    this area

    are

    needed.

    May God's

    work

    go

forth to the people through the printing done on the press. To win the

    world to Christ

    should

    be

    our

    only goal.

    Put

    your whole self

    into

    the

effort and it will be wonderful to see what the Lord

    can

    and

    will do

    in and through you.

    He

    is so

    great,

let us not limit Him to our meager

    efforts.

    Thank

    you

    for your faithful support during

    the past

    year.

    You

    have

    made His work

    here possible.

Alva Allen Phillips was born on January4, 1939 in Brownville, Indiana.

    His parents,

    Benjamin Harrison and

    Emma Lock Phillips

    died of cancer

    in

    1943,

    Being

    the

    youngest

    in

    the

    family of 10

    children, Alva

    was raised

    by Bennie and Henry

    Phillips, two of his older

    brothers. He graduated

from Brownville, Ind. High School and went on to Johnson

    Bible

    College

for four (4) years and graduated

    fromthere

    in

    1961. By

    this

    time

    he

    had decided

    to

    go

    into

    missionary work and went on

    to

    Eastern Christian

    College in

    Bel

    Aire, Md,

    for

    a y e a r ' s

    study

    in German

    and Greek. During

this time, while he studied he ministered

    to

    a small congregation, the

    Christian Church in Freindsville,

    Md,

    for 9 months.

    Following

    his

    schooling at Eastern Christian College,

    funds to go to

    Germany. During a presentation

    at

    the

    Garrett

    Church

    of

Christ Mission's Round=Up, he met Janice Elaine Snyder and with Minnie

    Coble's help, set

    out to

    take her

    to

    Germany as his

    wife,

    J a n i c e

Elaine Snyder, oldest daughter of Myron Robert a n d Mary Fern

    Snyder (who have

    8

    children) was born on Nov.

    6,

    1940 in^Woodburn, Ind.

    She graduated

    from high

    school in Coldwater, Michigan. Janice

    became a

    Christian

    at the

    age

    of

    lOyears old and d e c i d e d

    at that

    time to

    go into

    missionary work. Following graduation from

    high schoo,

    Janice

    entered

    Great

    LakesBible

    College and spent, for

    three years, each Summer working

    on the

    Yakama

    Indian

    Reservation

    with John

    Runyan,,

    as

    Bible

    Teacher, Camp

    Cook, Office Secretary and

    helper

    in the children's

    home. During her

    senior

    year

    of Bible

    College,

    she presented

    McKinley

    Indian Mission at

    every

    church

    possible, and

    was

representing it at the Garrett Mission

    Round-Up with the

    plan

    in mind

    of

    returning

    full

    time.

    After

    much

    persuasion, Janice consented to

    come

    to Germany in

    Octor of 1963, following

    her

    graduation the

    8th,

    of June and

    their

    marriage

    on June

    15, 1963,

    The first

    9

months in Germany were spent in

    the

    Frankfurt area in

    FCLU.5^

    writing German workbooks

    for

    children, in working with Ed

    Fauz

    and studyi

    beginner's

    German,

In the Fall of 1964 they moved

    to

    Stammheim

    where

    Deborah was born on

    Dec,

    8, 1964,

In February, 1965 Janice started the children's

    Bible

    House which grew

    during

    the

    next years.

    The

childrens work has been our strongest

    thrust

    during the past

    13

years. The Children's Bible Hour was

    held

    each Wed,

    and

    averaged

    35

    to 50

    children. Since

    nothing was

    available

    for

    >the

    children the Phillips

    drew

    up their own program.

    This

    led to the

starting of 3 youth groups which required much time and preparation.

    The

    Phillips

have had many interns and their efforts have been spiritual

    blessed as two couples

    from-these

interns, stepped out on faith to start

new works. They were Bill and

    Lela

    Rosenett who moved

    to

    Landstuhl and

    work

    with

    the

    military personnel in

    the Kaiserslautern area. The other

    couple are

    Rick and Delia

    Deighton,

    with Miss

    Diane

    Miller, who, after

laboring with us about 6 years moved to Heilbronn area and also worked

    with military

    pervice

    people. Several other interns

    have

    gone on

    to

    wor

with Toronto Christian Mission, in Berlin, in

    Karlsrauhe

    and Good News, I

    It

    seems

    as

    though God has used

    the

    Phillips

    to

    train

    others

    for

    work

    on

    the

    field.

    As close

    as

one can tell, they have helped

    train

    approx, 20

    interns. To God be

    the

    glory

    for the

    strength granted to

    them

    to

    carry

    on

    this

    work.

    The Deightons

    helped

    Alva & Janice get

    adult

    worship

services started in 1971 and this work is

    now

    carried

    on

    by Alva,

    Janice

    writes

up the Children's Bible workbooks and supervises the

    writing

    up

    of

th e Teacher's Quarters, This has

    progressed

    quite well.

    Janice is now

    ready

    to

    start

    on

    the 4th. quarter.

    So far, 3

    different

    D.V.B.S.

    series (10

    lessons

    in

    each

    series) have been written

    up

    and

    3 quarterlies (13 lessons each),

    The Phillips

    have purchased

    a

    press

    on

    which

    the

    teaching materials

in German are being printed by Jay Enck. Jay has served as printer

    for

    the

    past year and

    has done

an outstanding job. He is stationed

    in

    the U.S. Army at

    Echterdingen,

    W.

    Germany until

    October, 1977.

    In September

    of

1976 Alva had his first seizure and

    on

    October 14th,

    had

    his second

    one. The doctors

    have not

    been

    able to explain these

or agree on them. This has

    brought

    about a real

    slow down in

    the

    activities presently carried

    on. The

    teaching materials

    are

    being

    printed,

    as well as

    tracts

    for

    distribution, the

    adult

    services

    are

    led

    by

    Alva, but the

    Children's

    Bible House has

    been dropped

    until

    more workers

    are available. At

    present

    time the

    Phillips

    only

    have

Jay Enck part-time to help share

    the load.

    Janice also tutors

    English,

which grants wonderful opportunities to witness

    for

    Him,

It is our desire to preach and teach

    the

    word of

    our Lord.

    We

    want

to be found working daily in the vineyard

    of

    our Lord, bringing

    others

    to
