Hymn: TiS 153

1. God is love, let heav’n adore him;

God is love, let earth rejoice;

let creation sing before him,

and exalt him with one voice.

God, who laid the earth’s foundation,

he who spread the heavens above,

and who breathes through all creation,

God is love, eternal Love.

2. God is love, and gently enfolding

all the world in one embrace,

with unfailing grasp is holding

every child of every race.

And when human hearts are breaking

under sorrow’s iron rod,

then they find that selfsame aching

deep within the heart of God.

3

3. God is love, and, though with blindness

sin afflicts our human hearts,

God’s eternal lovingkindness

holding, guiding, grace imparts.

Sin and death and hell shall never

o’er us final triumph gain;

God is love, so love for ever

o’er the universe must reign.

Greeting: The Lord be with you.

AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: The Lord is near to all who call on him in truth. He fulfils the

desire of all that fear him, hears their cry, and saves them.

Psalm 145.18-19

Prayer of Preparation:

As we gather as God's people let us pray together:

Almighty God,

to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known,

and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration

of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name,

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

4

The Summary of the Commandments:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the

Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your

mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first

commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as

yourself.’

Kyrie eleison (Kew Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's

forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

and in what we have failed to do:

we have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;

we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.

Father, forgive us.

Strengthen us to love and obey you

in newness of life;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

5

The Absolution {Celebrant}

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him

in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen

you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ

our Lord. Amen.

6

Prayer of the Day

O God, giver of life and health,

whose Son Jesus Christ has called us

to hunger and thirst for justice:

refresh us with your grace,

that we may not be weary in well-doing,

for the sake of him who meets all our needs,

Jesus Christ our Saviour;

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)

First Reading: Genesis 32:22-31

22 The same night he got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and

his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them

and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. 24

Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. 25

When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on

the hip socket; and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with

him. 26 Then he said, "Let me go, for the day is breaking." But Jacob said,

"I will not let you go, unless you bless me." 27 So he said to him, "What is

your name?" And he said, "Jacob." 28 Then the man said, "You shall no

longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with

humans, and have prevailed." 29 Then Jacob asked him, "Please tell me

your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And there he

blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "For I have seen

God face to face, and yet my life is preserved." 31 The sun rose upon him

as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

7

Psalm: 17:1-7,16

1 Hear my just cause, O Lord, give heed to my cry:

listen to my prayer, that comes from no lying lips.

2 Let judgement for me come forth from your presence:

and let your eyes discern the right.

3 Though you search my heart, and visit me in the night-time:

though you try me by fire, you will find no wickedness in me.

4 My mouth does not transgress, like the mouth of others:

for I have kept the word of your lips.

5 My steps have held firm in the way of your commands:

and my feet have not stumbled from your paths.

6 I call upon you, O God, for you will surely answer:

incline your ear to me, and hear my words.

7 Show me the wonders of your steadfast love, O saviour of those who

come to you for refuge:

who by your right hand deliver them from those that rise up against them.

16 And I also shall see your face, because my cause is just:

when I awake and see you as you are, I shall be satisfied.

Second Reading: Romans 9:1-8

9:1 I am speaking the truth in Christ--I am not lying; my conscience

confirms it by the Holy Spirit-- 2 I have great sorrow and unceasing

anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut

off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to

the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the

glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises;

5 to them belong the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh,

comes the Messiah, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

6 It is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all Israelites

truly belong to Israel, 7 and not all of Abraham's children are his true

descendants; but "It is through Isaac that descendants shall be named for

you." 8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the

children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as

descendants.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

8

Gradual Hymn: TiS 558

1. All praise to thee, my God, this night

for all the blessings of the light:

keep me, O keep me, King of kings,

beneath thine own almighty wings.

2. Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,

the ill that I this day have done,

that with the world, myself, and thee

I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3. O may my soul on thee repose,

and may sweet sleep my eyelids close —

sleep that shall me more vigorous make

to serve my God when I awake.

4. When in the night I sleepless lie,

my soul with heavenly thoughts supply;

let no ill dreams disturb my rest,

no powers of darkness me molest.

5. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow,

praise God, all creatures here below,

praise God above, you heavenly host,

praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet

our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 14

beginning at the 13th

verse.

GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a

deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed

him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore, he saw a great

crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 15 When it

was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place,

and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into

the villages and buy food for themselves." 16 Jesus said to them, "They

need not go away; you give them something to eat." 17 They replied, "We

have nothing here but five loaves and two fish." 18 And he said, "Bring

them here to me." 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the

grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and

blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the

disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And all ate and were filled; and they

took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21

And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and

children.

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

• SERMON (Copies of the sermon are available at the back of church)

THE NICENE CREED

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge

the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son

is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

11

Grant that what we have asked in faith

We may by your grace receive,

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

15

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION

{Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

We who are many are one body,

For we all share in the one bread.

The choir sings the Agnus Dei

Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in

remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith

with thanksgiving.

Baptised Christians who receive communion in their own church

are invited to share communion with us.

Communion wine may be received:

(a) from the common cup from the first of the two Eucharistic Assistants.

(b) by intinction from the second of the Eucharistic Assistants where a small

part of the wafer is carefully dipped in the wine, or

(c) from an individual glass on request from the first Eucharistic Assistant.

Or you may choose to receive the wafer only (Communion in one kind).

The Choir Sings “Exultate Justi”, Viadana.

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE

Post-Communion Prayer

Prayer of self-offering

Father, we offer ourselves to you

as a living sacrifice

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Send us out in the power of your Spirit

to live and work to your praise and glory. AMEN

16

Final Hymn: TiS 620

1. O Jesus Christ, may grateful hymns be rising

in every city for your love and care;

inspire our worship, grant the glad surprising

that your blest Spirit rouses everywhere.

2. Grant us new courage, sacrificial, humble,

strong in your strength to venture and to dare,

to lift the fallen, guide the feet that stumble,

seek out the lonely and God’s mercy share.

3. Show us your Spirit, brooding o’er each city,

as once you wept above Jerusalem,

seeking to gather all in love and pity,

and healing those who touch your garment’s hem.

17

Blessing

Dismissal Go in peace to love and serve the Lord:

IN THE NAME OF CHRIST. AMEN
