Wild About Perton in August.....Some of Perton’s mature trees are out in the open and obvious for all to see whilst others are tucked away in odd corners. The tree after which our community is named, the pear, is now rare, except for those cultivated in back gardens. Its sole wild representative stands proud but hidden from view within the canopy of Smith’s Rough. Once a year its presence is detected by the windfall of hard fruits which litter the woodland floor. In Bluebell Walk unkempt rows of gangling, aged hawthorns mark long disused field boundaries, but long gone are the agricultural workers who kept them cut and trimmed. Perton has many more prominent fine, mature trees; mainly ash, oak, willow and a few stately beech. One of our large beeches, probably planted to enhance the landscape, has a decided lean, its roots being unsuited for Midland clay soils. Our ashes, oak and willows are much more at home often edging a path or road, or dominating a hedgerow. Our tall, straight oaks, like so many cousins at a party, were probably deliberately planted to be cropped as timber by a future generation, only to be forgotten when the future generation left the land. They now sit with their more irregular and wilder relatives which grew wherever an acorn hit the ground.Many of our mature trees are protected in law by Tree Protection Orders which prohibit their cutting down, uprooting, wilful damage or destruction. These protected trees line Dippons Lane, or can be found in Bluebell Walk or deep within Smith’s Rough and in a few gardens. But these mature trees are not just the largest and oldest living creatures in our community, they’re also communities in their own right supporting a myriad of animal and other plant life. Our woodlands come alive at dawn with wrens, song thrush and blackcaps filling the air with song. Willow supports more species of moths and other insects than any other British tree except the oak. Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody..........Church Closed!… well, more like, Church At Perton (mostly!) closed for August. The leadership team decided that other than Sunday mornings, our Holiday Club (18th-22nd), and Saturday Shoppers’ Coffee, the church will be closed throughout August. I really believe this is a very good and wise decision. We all need times off, times to rest and re-charge our batteries. Whether we have holidays in far-flung places, take the caravan to Weston-Super-Mare, or simply have days off at home, holidays are important. Taking days off, not setting the alarm, having a break from regular routines - these are so good for us and our well-being. As my lovely husband pointed out, when we see a bird just sitting on a wire, or see cows simply lying in a field, we don’t say they’re lazy! But often we chide ourselves or others that we’re being lazy, when actually we’re having a well-earned rest. God knows the importance of looking after ourselves and encourages us to rest. That old word, ‘sabbath’, is about setting aside a proper day of rest every week, because God knows this is vital for our well-being, including our spiritual well-being. Regular days off and holidays are so important. This August the church family is re-charging, ensuring we’re full of energy for the autumn. I hope and pray you have the chance to rest, taking care of yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

A Word From Your MP............... It is not often that I get an issue on which local of residents are overwhelmingly united, but it is particularly enjoyable to be able to fight for a cause that you know the neighbourhood is really behind.In order to be able to better gauge public opinion on a number of key topics, I have started sending out surveys to villages throughout South Staffordshire. This has enabled to gain a better perspective on a range of concerns affecting residents.Indeed, I can reveal that the top three issues that Perton residents care about most are health (52 percent), crime (51 percent) and immigration (46 percent). An incredible 89 percent said they back my campaign to obtain more money for schools in South Staffordshire and 91 percent said they support my campaign to obtain free home to school transport for every child in Perton, irrespective of whether they attend the nearest school in their catchment area.Responses from Perton are still coming in but, so far, over 80 percent of Perton residents have also joined me in calling for a lifting of the ban on turning left from Wrottesley Park Road onto Pattingham Road. I have been fighting for this cause now for a number of years. It really is absurd that local residents travelling from Perton to Wolverhampton should have to see their journeys significantly lengthen unnecessarily. I am pleased to be able to report that, in response to this campaign, Staffordshire County Council recently confirmed that it would look at the possibility of permanently lifting the ban and would look at ‘potential options in relation to the existing prohibition arrangements.’ I really hope that a reasonable alternative is found and that this current, ridiculous situation is brought to an end. I will continue to fight to see that residents’ voices are heard on this matter and that this issue is resolved.

Tips From Your Local PGA Pro at Perton Park..... The no1 fundamental that all great ball strikers know is

critical for hitting better shots is centred contact. How you contact the ball with the club head will affect spin, launch angle, distance, curve and also your perception of what happened in your golf swing. And as you might guess, hitting the centre of the face is what you want.I have a great drill that I like to use to improve my centred contact. All you need for this drill is a Sharpie and two golf balls. First, draw a big dot on your golf ball so that when you impact the golf ball, you'll be able to see where you hit it on the club face. And here's a little trick: If you're trying this on a driving range, use a dry-erase marker. It works well, and the range ball won't get damaged or marked up.Hit a few balls with a big round dot behind the ball, and in a short while, you'll quickly be able to see if you tend to hit the ball too much on the toe or on the heel. If you're missing on the toe, put two balls on the ground about three inches from each other, with the golf ball that has the dot on it being the ball that's farther from you. Typically, the cause of the toe shot is from bringing the club into impact with your hands and arms too close to your body. So, in this drill, you'll address ball #1 (the ball closer to you) and then swing the club back and hit ball #2 (the ball farther from you). This will cause you to feel your hands and arms extending through impact and get you to feel the necessary move to find the sweet spot of the club face.Now, if you tend to hit the ball too much in the heel, put the two balls on the ground and do the opposite. Set up for the outside of the ball, but hit the inside of the ball. This will help you avoid hits by the hole.The goal is to groove a better impact position so the ball and club face make contact closer to the enter of the club face. As you do this drill, whether it's fixing heel or toe hits, try not to fixate on results, but instead, pay attention to how the club feels. In no time, this simple and fun drill will have you improving your impact and hitting more solid golf shots.
