Perton goes wild for CSV Make a Difference Day, the UK’s biggest single day of volunteering

Wild About Perton were joined by Perton Guides & Brownies and supported by Gavin Williamson M.P. and local Councillor David Billson to make a real difference for wildlife in Perton on Saturday 3rd November.

Early on the Saturday morning volunteers litter picked along the River Penk. Gavin Williamson & local Guides planted wildflower bulbs around the new pond in the centre of Perton, whilst local Brownies were the first to dip in the new pond set up by volunteers over the past 5 years. It marked the beginning of a month long period of

Make a Difference Day activities which included Perton Scouts and Perton First School putting up bird nest boxes made by Perton Brownies and the planting of wildlife friendly trees donated by the Woodland Trusts Jubilee Woods. Jubilee Woods are being planted throughout the UK in celebration of Her Majesty The Queens historic 2012 Diamond Jubilee. Keith Elder from Wild About Perton said ‘Perton

residents are making a real difference to local wildlife through the bird boxes and bat boxes built and put up by local people. Also by creating a wildlife hedge or planting a tree they can make a real difference to wildlife in their own gardens and the new pond creates a safe area for local families to find out about all the exciting mini-beasts that live under water.’

Contact Keith Elder c/o [email protected] for further details and how to apply for a wildlife tree.

Grand Theatre PerformanceNovember 11th & 18th 2012 saw some fabulous dancing and wonderful costumes from the Suttie School of Dance in their annual display at the Grand Theatre Wolverhampton.

All ages took part from the youngsters of 3 to the adult tappers in a variety of routines in ballet, tap, acrobatics, disco and musical comedy. The show was a great night out for family and friends of the school and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The dancers themselves looked to be having a wonderful time on the stage and it must be a great experience for the younger members. The Suttie School of Dance was formed in 1976, as part of the MASD association, by Carol who still teaches today together with her nieces Kay & Amy and other teachers and helpers. Classes are on a Saturday for the younger pupils at Holy Cross Church hall in Bilbrook and each year pupils take examinations (the school has 100% success rate) and take part in the show at the Grand Theatre. Carol makes all of the stunning costumes for the dancers and that is some task with the number of pupils involved. Take along the advert on p20 to claim your first class free or contact the Suttie School of Dance to purchase a gift voucher to be used towards classes.

PERTON GARDENING CLUB DECEMBER IN THE GARDEN

Although winter is well and truly upon us there is still plenty to do in the garden.Prune birches and acers while they are dormant removing any diseased material and cut back to a healthy bud.Cut back any perennials that have started to look untidy. Tie in wall shrubs to protect them from wind damage and check tree stakes and ties loosening or remove them if necessary.Gather up fallen leaves and compost or recycle them although you can leave some as shelter for wildlife. Why not plant some shrubs with colourful stems to brighten the winter, Dogwood, Willow and Rubus are ideal. Check that your greenhouse insulation is still in place and that the heater is still working.Plant new fruit trees and bushes and bare root hedging as long as the ground is not frozen or too wet, if it is, roughly plant them in a temporary spot until conditions improve.Dig over any ground not in use and add organic matter such as compost to improve the soil structure. Take root cuttings from suitable plants such as Oriental Poppy, Acanthus, Primula and Japanese Anemones. This can be done up until the beginning of March.A final reminder that your Christmas tree will stay in better shape if it is watered.

A Word From Your MPAs this edition of Perton Pages lands on your doorstep I am quite sure that all your time and thoughts will be very much occupied with the rapid approach of Christmas. It is certainly the occupation of the moment from where I am writing this. My diary is already bursting to the seams with activities and events filling every available space. This year there are hundreds of Christmas festivities taking place up and down Staffordshire. From Christmas lights being switched on, tree festivals taking place, and school celebrations and carol services South Staffordshire will leaving no stone unturned when it comes to preparing for and enjoying the Christmas period. One thing that I do always notice after the hustle and bustle of Christmas is that there is a very large post bag. People often turn to their Member of Parliament as a last resort and the winter months can be especially unforgiving. It is so important at this time of year to remember those who are perhaps not as fortunate as ourselves. We must think of those who are maybe living on their own or perhaps struggling to cope at a time when others are so very happy. However Christmas is still the most wonderful time of year for coming together and it is so rare that we get the chance to get together to celebrate and see the beating hearts of our villages that sometimes we need reminding is there. It will be fantastic to see everyone in Perton come together with their families, friends and neighbours. I hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy the festivities in the run up to the day itself.I would very much urge all of you to keep an eye out over the Christmas period for those who perhaps don’t have the fortune that others do and just see if they need any extra help. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you think that I can be of assistance to you or to them. In the meantime I hope that you all have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Tips from Your Local PGA Pro

At Perton Park Golf ClubEvery week some one asks me

either during a lesson or in the Pro shop “How do you hit a Hybrid or rescue club?” Well now that hybrids have been around for more than a decade, it's easy to spot the common faults. The biggest one is that some players still don't carry a hybrid. If you're out there trying to hit a 3-iron, even a 4, you're crazy. These utility clubs are designed to help you make solid contact and get the ball in the air. In last weeks tour championship out of the 56 players in the field 52 had utility clubs and only 5 had 2 irons in play. (One player must have had both!!)

When it comes to hitting them, many golfers set the ball too far forward in the stance. They see that big club head and think they have to sweep the ball, like on a wood shot. That's the wrong mind-set. You want to hit a hybrid with a descending strike--think of it as a 5-iron swing. It's even a good idea to take a small divot after impact; that proves you're hitting down.

Play the ball just inside your front heel, below the logo on the left side of your chest.

At setup you'll see the loft on the clubface better than you do on a long iron--another subtle benefit of hybrid design. Seeing that loft gives you a nice shot of confidence. And if you do miss-hit it, the hybrid's wide sole and low center of gravity will minimize the damage. Trust me; you’ve got to have these clubs.

I hope you have enjoyed my column over the last year? I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a successful 2013. Don’t forget Christmas lesson vouchers are available from the golf shop 01902 380073 and for the Twitter users @PertonGolfPGA.

Enterprise Club – PertonDON’T BE OUT OF WORK, MAKE WORK!

Local Entrepreneurs in Support boostBudding entrepreneurs living in South Staffordshire are being the chance to turn their business dreams into reality thanks to the enterprise clubs which are up and running in the district. The enterprise club at Perton Library starts a new round of workshops soon and is aimed at people who have thought about entering the world of business – but who don’t know where to start. They specialise in giving top tips to people who think they’ve got a good business idea – but who have never had the confidence or support to turn that idea into reality in the past.Councillor Brian Edwards, Leader of South Staffordshire Council explains:“I often speak to people who tell me they’ve got a great idea for a business but when you ask them why they don’t do it; they say they don’t know where to start. These new enterprise clubs are just the ticket for people like that”.The club is completely FREE- Clubs in Wombourne and Bilbrook follow in the New Year. Buying a Real Christmas TreeBuying a Real Christmas TreeWhat seems to be an extremely easy and enjoyable experience can turn into a notoriously difficult and annoying one, especially when you are confronted with so many different species and varying sizes? We at Codsall & Wergs Christmas hope to help make buying your Christmas Tree a thoroughly enjoyable and easy experience. It is all about choices:-First, decide whether you want a tree that will loose its needles or not.Second, decide whether you want a pot grown or cut tree.Third, decide what size you need.Fourth, what is you budget. All of our staff are at your disposal, to help you make these decisions if you are unsure. They will show you the different types and varieties, and explain each trees qualities. They will also help you find the right size, shape, and price range, finally they will net you chosen tree and carry it to your car.At Codsall and Wergs, we have over 400 trees on display for you to choose from, all individually priced.Cut VarietiesNorway spruce (picea abies). This is the traditional tree, heavily scented, but it can loose some needles when kept in a warm environment.Nordmann (abies nordmanniana). This tree is the most popular Christmas tree, especially as it is scented with soft needles. It is very needle retentive.Pine (lodge pole). The pine has very long needles, Popular as this tree will not loose its needles, and because of its distinct teardrop shape.Pot Grown VarietiesWe stock Norway, Nordman, Noble, Omorika and Blue Spruce. What to do, when you get your tree homeIf you are not putting your tree up straight away, it is best to leave it outside and remove the net. What many people don’t realise is that a needle on a Christmas tree is a modified leaf and although there are no roots left on a cut tree. They will absorb moisture from the atmosphere through their needles. The only reason a tree will loose its needles is because it have become too dry. When it is time to take the tree indoors it is advisable (once the net is removed) to bang the stump of the tree quite heavily on hard ground to shake off any loose needles.Once the tree is in the house it is still very important to try to keep up its water intake, even though the tree has no roots it will take water through the cut stump or attached log base. At Codsall and Wergs Christmas Trees ,the majority of our trees are displayed on a wooden block, if you keep this block on to stand your tree up in the house it is advisable to stand the block in a large saucer (on sale) of water so keeping the block wet at all times. Or if you prefer, we sell a range of custom tree stands.Contact Us at Codsall & Wergs Garden Centre, Wergs Hall Road, Codsall, WV8 2HG Telephone: 07816 9510782
