Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody

As I type, it’s just before Christmas, and the print deadline is looming! But, in all the festive bustle, it’s hard to think forward to January, when you’ll be reading this. However, someone reminded me that in

mid-January I’ll have been living on Perton, serving as your Vicar, for 2 years... 2 years! I can’t believe how quickly the weeks and months have flown. It’s been a fantastic 2 years, both Paul and I feel so settled and at home. Thank you to all who’ve helped me feel part of the life of our village, it’s a fantastic place to live and work!New Year, traditionally, is a time for reviewing the past, as well as looking forward. With this 2nd anniversary, I look back with such gratitude to the Church At Perton, the wider community, and God, for an amazing beginning here. And as I look ahead... I can honestly say I’ve no idea what lies in store!Like most, I imagine, I have hopes and dreams for 2014 - for myself, our family, and the church. But really, I have little, if any, control over those. None of us knows what’s around the corner, therefore, I think the very best resolution any of us can make, is to seek to make each day count; doing our best to be kind to ourselves and our loved ones, and being good neighbours - didn’t Jesus say something like that?! May God bless us all in 2014.

Tips from Your Local PGA ProAt Perton Park Golf Club

Happy New Year Everyone! - Every golfer has hit that one pure shot, that magical moment when all goes right and the club and ball meet in perfect harmony to produce the perfectly struck shot.

It’s a moment that’s almost completely unique to golf. People can play football their entire lives, and never know one moment like David Beckham. But every once in a while, a golfer can hit a golf shot just as pure as Tiger Woods or Adam Scott.“Solid” is a term golfers use a lot when it comes to impact, but what does it actually mean? Well, most of the time when a golf shot is hit solid there were a few things working correctly at impact: Contact is on or very near the sweet spot, the face angle is relatively square face and the club is moving with sufficient speed. But what most golfers actually mean when they say they hit a shot “solid” is that the golf club descended into the golf ball at the correct angle, or had the correct angle of attack. The most common angle of attack problem average golfers run into is hitting behind the ball, which are called “fat shots.” What you may not know, however, is that there are two kinds of fat shots: steep fat shots and shallow fat shots. Steep fat shots are obvious: golfers dig a trench behind the golf ball. But shallow fat shots are different and much less obvious. I call shallow fat shots “drop kicks,” which are very similar to what happens when in football a free-kick scuffs the ground with his cleats before kicking the ball. In a shallow fat shot, the club come in, brushes the turf and then hits the ball usually on the way up. In both cases, golfers hit the ground before the ball, but they are caused by two different angles of attack and require two different corrections.If you are too steep, I recommend the following corrections:A wider stance with a lower right shoulder at address (for a right-handed golfer), A much fuller shoulder turn in the backswing with a greater weight shift to right side(for a right-handed golfer), A wider backswing, pushing the club well away from you, A feeling of staying more behind the ball as you start the downswing, A feeling of flattening the shaft on the way down, An earlier release point. If you are too shallow, I recommend the following corrections:A narrower stance with more level shoulders at address (possibly even a feeling of having a little more weight on left side), A feeling of “staying on the ball” with little to no weight transfer from left, A narrower, more upright takeaway with your arms not getting too far out from body, A feeling of moving the body forward as you start down, A feeling of keeping the club above the hands longer, Possibly a little delay in your release (be careful here; many will be treading on thin ice!). Of course, centre contact is also important for golfers to get the “well struck” feeling, but many will find that correcting their angle of attack may help that issue as well. Remember, an upright or “steep” backswing does not mean that a golfer will necessarily have a steep angle of attack. And a flat, more around takeaway doe not necessarily produce a shallow angle of attack, either. This article is describing the movement of the club into the ball, not away from it. One more thing: If you are steep today, there is little to no chance you will be shallow tomorrow. These things take time. And guidance. Good luck!

CASS is the administrator for the Carers Health Respite Break funding, to enable carers to have up to £300 to pay for a professional, friend or family member to come in to the home to provide respite whilst the carer takes a break.The fund can be used for daytime, evening or overnight care or for assistive technology (gadgets) to assist the carer in their daily activities with their dependants.Our aim is to reach as many Carers in Staffordshire so that they can take a break and so that we use the funds allocated to us whilst it is still available.Please contact Isabel Summers, Breaks Administrator at CASS on 01785 222365 or leave your address with reception.

Harlequin Pantomime Productions Present:ROBIN HOOD (the way it really happened).Harlequin Pantomime Productions are putting on their latest all-singing, all dancing, all slapstick comedy: "Robin Hood" on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 21st - 25 January, at Perton Civic Centre.This is the seventh annual pantomime that this company has produced, and all previous shows have been sell-out successes, with them winning the prestigious National Operatic and Dramatic Association's (NODA's) award in 2010, 2011, and 2012, for the best regional amateur pantomime.The aim of the company has always been to produce a professional-quality pantomime that is fun for all the family and which the local community and surrounding area can enjoy and afford. The organisation is a "not-for-profit" company and a major part of its' work is to support local charities, mainly for children.Possibly the most popular and entertaining character in any panto, of course, is the Dame. Harlequin is proud to have, as its' President, one of the most talented and experienced Dames in the area. He (she!) really is a superb Dame, and gives a comedy performance not to be missed. But he is only one of a really excellent and vastly talented cast, who are a joy to see perform. This is why the shows are a sell out year after year, or is it all those gorgeous, leggy young dancing girls? Oh Yes it Is! Incidentally, the age range of the cast is from four to seventy, amazingly.The company also boasts a great Musical Director, who provides, with his talented musician friends, the excellent live backing for the shows. He, together with the Director, the Producer, the Choreographer, the back-stage and technical team, and the Front-of-House management team produce a wonderful show full of the magic of live theatre - a great-value joyful night of family entertainment not to be missed. Wild About Perton in JanuarySafe behind a sealed, dried-mud wall in their own individual cells, the solitary bees in our bee hotel are safe from the cold of January, waiting for the warmth of spring. Their story began earlier this year when the female bee sought a suitable site to nest, with our bee hotel chosen because it mimics the natural cavities the female would otherwise use.Once chosen and cleaned to her satisfaction the bee must learn about her surroundings; where for instance are the most abundant sources of nectar and pollen to feed herself and her off spring, and where is the best source of mud to seal the cells where her young will develop. She then needs to memorise the clues so she can find her way back to the nest each time she forages. Once she has a good mental map of her surroundings each individual cell must be sealed at the back using the mud and then provisioned with pollen upon which a single white egg is laid. Provisioning each cell means many foraging trips visiting a wide range of flowering plants. The cell is then sealed with more mud and then she repeats the process until she has provisioned a row of cells each with its own egg divided from its neighbour by a mud wall.The female will not survive to see the fruits of her labours but safe within each cell something magical is happening. The eggs hatch into larvae which feed avidly on the stored pollen during the summer and then pupate. The fully formed adult bee hatches in the autumn and then waits patiently for the spring warmth, breaking out of the cells using powerful jaws to find a mate and begin the cycle again.There will be so much to see and enjoy about Perton’s wildlife in 2014. Why not join us for our monthly wildlife walk which leaves Perton Library at 2PM on the first Saturday of every month, whatever the weather.

A Word From Your MPSeveral of you may know that, during the recent Government re-shuffle, I was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Prime Minister. Unlike the role of Minister or Secretary of State, the position of PPS is little known outside the echelons of Westminster. It is the first rung of the Government ladder and, as the Speaker would say, primarily involves carrying bags and passing notes. On being appointed PPS to David Cameron, I had already spent stints working as a PPS to the Secretary of State for Transport, the Rt. Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP, and the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, the Rt. Hon Owen Paterson MP. However, I quickly realised that the tasks I would be asked to undertake as PPS to David Cameron would bear little resemblance to those that I was asked to carry out in any former assignments.The most significant change is the amount of influence that my new role provides. Not only do I attend daily briefings with the PM, but I also have the opportunity to sit in on the weekly Cabinet meetings. He did, though, quickly point out that it wasn’t my role to speak in them. However, by far and away the best bit of my new job, as far as I am concerned, is the opportunity that it provides me to be a strong voice for South Staffordshire at the heart of Government. As always, South Staffordshire continues to be my first priority and the main focus of all my efforts. When deliberating on any issue, the question of how it will impact our home is always my first consideration and the primary means by which I arrive at a decision. The past year was one of many challenges, but also several triumphs, such as this year’s incredibly successful local job fair, which was held at the Perton Civic Centre. Indeed, last month’s figures show that unemployment in South Staffordshire was, at 2.4 percent, half that of the national average. Furthermore, it was down 0.8 percent on the previous year and 1.2 percent since the general election, in 2010. As we enter into the New Year, I feel that we have much to celebrate and I hope that 2014 will prove to be an even better year than the last. To contact me call 01902 846616 or 0207 219 7150
