What were research and education networks born for?

A Research and Education network usually offers:

• A high-speed backbone network

• Dedicated channels for individual research projects

• A good environment for testing new Internet protocols and architectures http://www.terena.org/activities/development-support/r+e-faq/general.html#about

Anella Científica: e-Infrastructure

Anella Científica is the research and

education network in Catalonia

It’s an e-Infrastructure

Managed by CSUC

Connected to RedIRIS

With more than 80 institutions related

to research in many fields

Géant, the Pan-European Research an Education Network

The GÉANT network is

cofunded by the European

Commission within its 7th R&D

framework program.

With 41 partners, it connects 34

NREN partner countries with

50,000 km of network

infrastructure and over 12,000

km of lit fibre.

Over 1,000 Terabytes of data are

transferred every day via the

GÉANT IP backbone.

Sonification of scientific data:Volcano dance, seismic data

CityDance Ensemble performed to music based on the structure of melodies

created out of seismic waves recorded from Mount Etna in Italy, Mount Tungurahua

in Ecuador, and the Mountains Pinatubo and Mayon in the Philippines. The sounds

were recorded using the GÉANT, ALICE and TEIN networks.
