LCCC Graduate Wins at Beacon Conference

LCCC Professor Rachel Plaksa, Rockland Community College President Dr. Cliff L. Wood, award recipient and LCCC graduate Ryan DuPont, and co-directors of Beacon 2015

Dr. Kristopher Baker and Robert Fuentes.

LCCC graduate Ryan DuPont won the top prize for best research paper in the Social Sciences category at the Beacon Conference on June 5, held at Rockland Community College in Suffern, NY. The Beacon Conference was established in 1993 to recognize, celebrate and showcase the academic achievements of outstanding students at community colleges in the mid-Atlantic region. The conference is held each year on the first Friday in June, and encompasses a wide range of disciplines.

Professor Laura Segatti is the recipient of the 2014-2015 Community College Regional Chapter Counselor Award by Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education. The award recognizes one counselor from each region who excels in his or her role. Segatti was chosen for demonstrating leadership in representing the mission and ideals of Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) and for achieving excellence in her role as a counselor. In order to win this award, Segatti successfully scored higher than her peers in the areas of modeling leadership, motivating and communicating with chapter members, impacting the careers of chapter officers and members, involvement in chapter programs and activities, and exemplifying the mission and ideals of the society. Segatti will receive a certificate, will be featured on KDP’s blog and website, and will be formally recognized in Orlando, Fla., with a plaque at the organization’s October convocation.

Students in LCCC’s hospitality management class completed their service learning project by volunteering at the annual Meals on Wheels volunteer appreciation dinner for Lehigh County Meals on Wheels at Asbury United Methodist Church in Allentown. The students were event captains, servers, food runners and dishwashers at the event to honor over 230 Lehigh County Meals on Wheels volunteers, staff and board members. “The students did an outstanding job of working as a team to serve the honorees at the appreciation dinner,” noted Timothy Gibbons, assistant professor of hospitality management.

Several LCCC students, faculty and staff journeyed overseas to visit Ireland and learn about the history, take in the beauty of the surrounding islands, visit centuries-old castles and hike the infamous Moher cliffs. The nearly two-week international trip was led by Professor Creed Hyatt, who has guided students on several trips across the Atlantic for over a decade. Hyatt plans to take students abroad again in 2016 to Italy to visit Rome, Naples and Pompeii.

LCCC has been invited to work with Air Products and the Allentown City Center to develop a college summer intern program. LCCC has received a $5,000 grant from Air Products to cover the costs of three paid internships at non-profit organizations. Other participating colleges are

Moravian College, Muhlenberg College, Lehigh University, Lafayette College, DeSales University and Cedar Crest College. The program creates a cohort of interns from area colleges and universities and offers them opportunities to work in Allentown. “Throughout the summer, interns will be invited to a variety of networking, social and educational events so that they can become a part of the renaissance of downtown Allentown,” says Laurie Gostley Hackett, Air Products’ manager of community relations and philanthropy. “Activities for the interns include mentoring opportunities, networking activities, discounted admissions to events, group outings to IronPigs, and other ways for the interns to get to know each other and the Allentown community.” LCCC students will work for Sacred Heart Hospital, as well as at the college’s Allentown site and with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms charitable organization.
