AFTER months of searching for ourMiss Matric Dance of 2015, thewinner was finally crowned lastTuesday.

She is the radiant Sameera Scharneckfrom Theodor Herzl High School whobowled the judges over with her stunningdress and overall look for her matricdance at the Abraham Levy Centre in Per-ridgevale. Her dance was held on August6.

She was crowned the second Miss Mat-ric Dance winner during an informalmovie morning at Ster-Kinekor in theBaywest Mall (read more about the mov-ie morning on pages 20 and 21).

Sameera’s dress was made by AnitaSeal from Anita’s Creative Designs.

“I looked through different designs inmagazines and on the internet and thisspecific design immediately caught myattention,” Sameera replied on wherethe inspiration for her dress camefrom.

“I chose an off-white/ivory colouras I believed it would contrast nicelywith my skin tone,” she added.

Her hair was done by stylist Jackieat Nouvo, her make-up was done byMiléne Petersen Lippert and hernails were done by Sue at Juan Jou-bert.

According to Sameera, the prepa-ration period for her matric dancewas about two months. “The wholeprocess was very relaxed, as I knewexactly what I wanted.”

She was accompanied to herdance by one of her best friends,Dane Mechali, “which made it ex-tremely enjoyable. My expecta-tions were highly exceeded; I absolute-ly loved my matric dance and wouldn’t change athing!” she said.

After reading about the Miss Matric Dance competitionin the PE Express, Sameera decided to enter the competi-tion but said she never expected to be a finalist and there-fore never thought she would win. “It was definitely a

pleasant surprise though, and the gifts arewonderful!”

Sameera was also a very busy matricu-lant. She was vice-head of the sports forum,

vice-head of the culture forum, assistantGlee conductor, girls’ first team hockey cap-tain, she received the hockey player of theyear award (2014/2015), the Fellowship andCommitment to hockey award and a distinc-

tion in Trinity for individual acting skills andfor acting in pairs. Sameera also represented

South Africa in tumbling and trampolininggymnastics in New Zealand, Russia and Birming-

ham.In her free time she loves spending time with

friends, but also enjoys playing the piano, running,reading and watching series.

She will be attending the University ofCape Town next year and will be major-

ing in psychology.Her advice for next year’s matric-

ulants attending a matric dance?“Don’t stress too much about theactual evening but be certain tomake all your appointmentswell in advance. Have a goodidea of the design you wantbefore you take it to thedesigner to ensure thatthere are no glitches inthe final outcome.Don’t forget to havefun!”

IN an effort to empower women in thehome building industry, the NHBRC host-ed a successful three-day Technical Train-ing Workshop at the East Cape TrainingCentre in Port Elizabeth last week.

About 110 registered women-ownedhome builders from the Nelson MandelaBay Municipality attended the workshopfacilitated by NHBRC technical trainingexperts.The purpose of the workshop was to

equip women-owned home builders withtechnical and compliance information inpreparation of the roll out of the formaltraining programme expected to start in2016.“The workshop comprised theory and

practical training where participantswere equipped with information in orderto have a good understanding of the homebuilding regulatory and technical require-ments,” said NHBRC Training Consultant,Nomthandazo Mkhwanazi.“With this training workshop we want

to ensure that our home builders’ particu-larly women, are complying with theNHBRC building and technical standardswhen they are on site.”According to Mkwanazi, the workshop

was a launching pad for the introductionof the Emerging Contractors’ Incubationprogramme funded by NHBRC in partner-ship with SEDA Construction Incubator.“In this Incubation programme we will

be training 150 emerging home builders onbusiness management skills such finan-cial management, preparation of tendersfor construction contracts and project

management. The programme will includeconstruction training focusing on techni-cal skills needed at various key stages ofbuilding such as plumbing, painting, plas-tering and brick laying.”Upon completion of the Incubation pro-

gramme, Mkwanazi said the participantswill receive NQF level 2-4 certificates ac-credited with Construction Education andTraining Authority.“With this training programme we want

to ensure that emerging home builders areable to build quality homes in order tocompete with big construction compa-nies,” she concluded.One of the participants, Nomazizi Dyasi

from Kuphilwaphi Trading, said the work-shop was very informative as she gainedin-depth knowledge of the home buildingindustry.“Some of the things we take for granted

onsite like soil classification and mixingof cement, are very crucial in the processof building a house. I am looking forwardto the formal incubator programme be-cause I want to graduate from being sub-contractor to being a main contractor.”Another participant, Nosisana Thabata

fromNosisizwe CC, said the three days shespent at the workshop were beneficial tothe sustainability of her company in thehome building industry.“The presentations were very clear on

the importance of complying with NHBRCregulations and standards if I want to growand sustainmy business in the home build-ing industry.”“As women of the NelsonMandela Metro

PATIENTS of Livingstone Hospital no lon-ger have to sit on hard, uncomfortable cha-irs when they are waiting at the hospital.

The MEC of Health, Dr Pumza Dyantyi,officially opened the refurbished receptionarea for outpatients at the hospital lastweek.The outpatient department, which sees

on average 72 000 patients annually, nowboasts over two hundred new comfortableseats, as well as new admin furniture andequipment.“The reception area was renovated with-

in a month with new tile floors and the newchairs will mean that patients can now sitcomfortably while waiting,” Dyantyi said.New cabinets were built and rooms were

painted to match the new look.Truworths and the SAME Foundation

(South African Medical and EducationalFoundation) made a huge contribution tothe repairs.“The total cost of the renovation is R6

million,” Siyanda Manana, communicati-ons director of the department of health,said.Dyantyi also later handed over 21 new

wheelchairs to patients at the Chatty com-munity hall.“We encourage people to apply for a

wheelchair if he or she needs a wheelchairbut can not afford one,” Tenielle Campbell,coordinator of rehabilitation services inNelson Mandela Bay, said.“The wheelchairs are specifically made

for a person’s unique build,” Campbellsaid.

THENelsonMandela Metropolitan Universi-ty took renewed steps toward the advance-ment of rubber-related research and develop-ment by launching the Centre for RubberScience and Technology at its South Campuslast week.

According to Dr Percy Hlangothi, Directorof the Centre: “Nelson Mandela Bay is hometo themotor and tyre industrymaking the es-tablishment of this Centre a testimony toNMMU’s commitment to remaining relevantto the region’s needs.”Drawing on NMMU’s historic experience

in rubber science and technology, the Centrewill focus on providing analytical and techni-cal services, as well as training for the needsof rubber and tyre manufacturing industrieswithin South Africa.“The Centre will not only house research

projects that are relevant to the industry andcommunity needs but will also offer learningprogrammes (short and long) andsupport ser-

vices to benefit the industry,” Dr Hlangothiadded.The Centre’s rubber-related research and

development programmes will cross variousdisciplines suchaschemistry, environmentalscience, computer science, engineering andeconomics.“The launch of theCentre has been spurred

by our research on tyre recycling sponsoredby REDISA (Recycling and Economic Devel-opment Initiative of South Africa), but goesbeyond those projects and looks at the indus-try as a whole,” said Jaci Barnett, Director ofNMMU’s Innovation Office.NMMU has long been active as a training

institution in this field, providing educationat both undergraduate and postgraduate le-vels.Todate, over 50mastersanddoctoral stu-dents have graduated from NMMU, havingcompleted their researchprojects in thePhys-ical andPolymerChemistryResearchGroup.Many of these graduates are employed in

the local tyre and rubber industry with anumber having gone on to establish rubber-related companies.

“EK was ’n gemiddelde ou op universiteit. Mydosente het altyd gesê: ‘Bruce, jy gaan in ’n jamfactory opeindig.’ Ek was hardekwas, ’n rebel en’n regte party animal. Maar Sapphire Road, diéskool en sy mense, was my saving grace.”

Damons,vanKorstenindieBaai,hetsyonder-wysloopbaan in 1990 by George Schmidt Primê-re Skool in Gelvandale begin. Hier het hy vir dieeerste keer, onder leiding van sy eerste “baas”,Richard Wessels, met die “waarde van mense”kennis gemaak.

“Hy [Wessels] was ’n merkwaardige leier. Hyhet meer omgegee vir die mense met wie hy ge-werk het as vir die werk en die onderrig. Ek hetby hom geleer om die mensdom te eer alvorensmens stelsels en logistiek ag.

“Daarna, in 1992, het ekbyHillside [SeniorSe-kondêre Skool] begin. My begeerte om in delevan ons samelewing te werk wat deur ons ge-skiedenis verniel is, het hier verdiep,” het hy ge-sê.

Hy onthou hoe hy nog die “hardekwas Bruce”was die dag toe hy by Sapphire Road begin het.Maar, sêhy, die leerders seouershet gousypiepuitgehaal.

“Ek dink die grootste les wat ek by dié skoolgeleer het, is dat ’n skool aan ’n gemeenskap be-hoort.BaiekyknaSapphireensê:Bruce, youha-ve done a good job. Dis nie ék nie. Dis die mense.Die gemeenskap. By Sapphire bóú ouers bakste-ne as ons wil uitbrei.”

In 2000 was byna elke venster by dié skool uit.Vandag spog Sapphire Road met heel vensters,’n sentrum vir verkragtingslagoffers, ’n kliniek,

’n ondersteuningsentrum waar leerders, ouersen selfs die personeel vir sielkundige hulp kanaanklop.

Die skool het ook twee sekerheidshuise waar-in werklose families woon terwyl hulle na dieskool se veiligheid omsien. Met 45 vrywilli-ge werkers wat onder meer help met dieskool se administratiewe pligte, tuinskoonmaak, die kospotte en die biblio-teek beman, is dié skool se enjin goedgeolie.

Damons onthou hoe iemand “indiemoeiliker jare”bydieskool inge-breeken ’nrekenaaruiteenvandieklaskamers gesteel het.

OnderDamonsseleidingistallevaardigheids-werkskole in onder meer naaldwerk en sweis-werk hier aangebied.

“Selfs bendelede het hul vaardighede kom op-skerp. Die skool was nog nooit so veilig soos toehulle Sapphire bevriend het nie,” spot hy.

Damons het dié baanbrekerswerk by Sapphi-re Road met ’n skoolbanksaldo van -R16 000 be-gin. “Ek dink die Here het in Sy tyd op aardeskool geloop, want hy weet presies hoe om menste seën vir dít wat jou skool nodig het. Ons funk-sioneer in ’n area waar misdaad, dwelmmis-bruik, geweld en armoede seëvier. ’n Kind watby Sapphire se hekke instap, het meer as net ’nles uit die skoolkurrikulum nodig. Hy moet on-dersteuning, liefde en aanmoediging kry. Dit is

’n eer om vir 15 jaar deel van dié ondersteuningte kon wees,” het hy gesê.

Toe die skool sy sekerheidshuise bou, het Da-mons en die beheerraad self skenkings ingeoes.Diemans indiegemeenskaphetdiebakstenege-maak en die vroue het seker gemaak hulle eet.

Ook toe die skool se badkamers opgeknapmoes word, het dié skoolhoof in ou jeans en tek-kies die vloere geskrop, omdat hy glo dat leierseersselfhulhandemoetvuilmaakvoordathulledit van hul volgelinge kan verwag.

The panel of judges had a very difficult deci-sion in choosing the winner, because the tenfinalists all looked gorgeous in their ownway.

RESIDENTS and employees of GelvanPark Frail Aged home are getting ready forthe institution’s Big Walk and fete takingplace on Saturday, December 5.

According to Fadzanai Make, matron ofthe frail care facility, the Big Walk and feteis an effort to raise much needed funds forthe institution.

“The residents we serve at this institu-tion are mainly from very poor communi-ties and to most of them their state pensionis their only means of income. We thereforeneed to raise additional funds to cover theshortfall of running the Home,” said Make.

The five-kilometre Big Walk starts at8am from the Gelvan Park Frail Aged

Home in Olea Street, Gelvan Park, and fin-ishes at the same place. There will also bea number of stalls at the fete, ranging froma variety of tasty foods, sweets, bric-a-bracand clothes.

“We would like to call upon the entirecommunity to support this venture,” saidMake.

In addition, volunteers are needed tohelp the aged who would like to participate,by pushing their wheelchairs or support-ing them to walk. A shorter route will betaken for the elderly.

rather a tactical fight through pit stop strategy.In the first round of pitstops Hamilton fol-

lowedhis race leading teammate into thepitlaneonly a lap later, effectively mirroring his strate-gy.However,with theconstructor’s anddriver’stitle in the bag the Mercedes team allowed itsdrivers some leeway in strategy calls and racingup to the chequered flag. Lewis Hamilton tookadvantage of the rare freedom to extend his sec-ond stint on the yellow side-walled soft tyres. Atone point Hamilton even considered running aone stop strategy andgoing to the end onhis tyr-es. This strategy was quickly dismissed as im-possible by his race engineer and Hamilton pit-

It re-sulted in a damaged front-wing for Bottas andfive second penalty.For Nico Rosberg the season couldn’t have

ended any better with six pole positions and ahat trick of victories. It begs the question as towhere this prodigious formhas been the entireseason. Is it as a result of a release of pressureor has Rosberg at long last found somethingthat Hamilton has no answer for?
