CANADIAN KRUSO (JUNE 1973-JULY 2006) BY KARENA KRULL

 Tethered by a lunge line in avacant lot, stood a nine month oldAppaloosa colt. Quizzically, heraised his head at my approach.Our eyes met and that was that.At nineteen, my lifelong dream of owning a horse came true. Hewas a wedding gift from my soon-to-be husband, Tay. For better or for worse, I owned a horse!

Originally named “Caruso” due tohis deep, long, musical whinny, Ilater shortened his name to“Kruso.” It just seemed to fitbetter. I was recovering fromback surgery, which allowed me

to spend my days with Kruso.We played “tag” and “hide andseek” among the trees, barns andbushes. He grew into a fun trailhorse, willing to go just aboutanywhere he was asked andusually at a fast pace. He loved toGO! A talented escape artist, he’dspend his days testing hotwires or fiddling with gate latches. He'dpaw wire fences until they broke

and crawl under those that wereleft standing. Climbing a 6-foot

pole fence? Easy! – Just onepole at a time until the weight of his front end tipped him over tothe other side. Escaping seemedto be a challenge for his ownentertainment, sometimes takinghis stable mates along on hisexcursions.

A friendly fellow to man andbeast, he'd sleep stretched outside by side in the sun with hiswild rabbit friend. He gladlywallowed in the mud next to hispig, Petunia, and he gently“nannied” an orphaned fawn whohung out in his pasture. In his

senior years, he lovingly providedshelter for Kally, our Nubian goat,by allowing her to stand under hisbelly.

Kruso began his 4-H showingcareer at age 19! He and mydaughter, Rachael, competed atthe Washington State Fair for three consecutive years. Their final year together produced athird place in the WesternWashington Trail Class. In

achieving this award, they out-performed that year's Half

CANADIAN KRUSO (JUNE 1973-JULY 2006) BY KARENA KRULL

Arabian and Appaloosa National Trail championstwo out of three times! What Kruso lacked in conformation, he made up inwillingness and heart. He did nearly everythingthat was asked of him. What he didn’t do, wechalk up to being such a character. A horse has toput his foot down! He never refused to do whatwas commendable, like giving 120+ kids ponyrides over a long 2½-hour period at a churchevent . . . all by himself! Without complaint, heallowed me to deck him out as a reindeer for aChristmastime visit to an elementary school.Complete with bobbing aluminum antlers and bellson his toes, he performed tricks, delighting thechildren and teachers alike.

Serving children was a Kruso specialty. In his 32years, he brought countless smiles to all the kidswho met him. Kruso also brought solace totroubled kids who found healing and joy in thetherapeutic touch of a horse. As he stoodmunching his hay in the quiet surroundings of hisstall, children poured out their hearts to him and

me, all the while patting and brushing this gentlefriend.

In a lifetime of memories, his greatest legacy...justbeing a horse...it's what he did best.

From Kandis Horton, Riding Instructor

Student Highlights:  I am so proud of all of my students!  Each and every one of them work SO hardeach week.  In each newsletter, I am going to write a little blurb on the latest successes!  So, if you don'tsee your name is this one, don't worry, it will be in a future newsletter.

  Jo & Zannity:  Jo, a student of almost 7 years has taken a liking to Roze-El's "baby" Zannity!  Jo has putin many hours helping us prepare her to be saddle broke.  Zannity was born here on June 6th,2007.  Some of Jo's goals with her were to be able to bridle her, walk her through puddles and lunge herboth directions.  As of mid- Januray, all 3 goals... DONE!

Pat & Isis:  Pat, a student of 2 1/2 years has been an excellent help with my sensitive Isis! Isis is a 17.1hand jet black warm blood.  And although she has a heart of gold, she takes a very light hand.  Pat haslearned a lot from her and Isis has learned a lot from Pat.  Pat's dedication to Isis has been led to anunbreakable bond.  I am SO happy to announce that in December she cantered Isis for the first time! It was just few days before Pat's birthday.  WOW, what a great present!

Anna & Epic:  Oh, my sweet little Anna!  She has been riding with me since she was 6 years old!  Anna turned 9 this past year and can now ride any of school horses!  Her most current goal on Epic has been todo a walk/canter transition.  Well, as of January, she has been getting them pretty consistently.  YAY, Anna!  Keep up the good work girl! Rohan & Sunny:  Rohan is exceptionally nice young man and a student of 8 months.  He has startedriding my very first horse, Sunny.  Sunny is an absolute gentleman, delicate  like a unicorn, butFAST. Rohan loves to ride him as Sunny challenges him in ways that no other horse here at Roze-El

 would.  But because of Rohan's quiet hands and patience, they are doing great!  He is currently working on trotting him off the lunge line, he is getting closer!  Good job Rohan!

Payton & Sir Gallant:  Payton is one of my youngest students, she  will be 5 this year.  She startedtaking lessons with me at the age of 3.  She now has her own horse,  a sweet little welsh  whom she gotin late October.  Payton is still getting the feel of Gallant.  Her goal for her upcoming show season wastrot him all by herself.  Well, that is now a done deal!  Payton can trot her pony all over the place! ( Ipredict Payton will be in the "big time" show arena someday! )  This little girl is ALL business in herlessons, but an absolute JOY!

Marina & Lacey:  Marina, a student of 3 1/2 years has had quite the adventure with her mare, Lacey. When I first met Marina, Lacey REFUSED to go forward.  She would kick, buck, and swish that tail! Well, after months of Marina's dedication and confidence building, they were finally going forward! Marina's parents, Jean and Danett, have been so supportive of Marina and reliable as the day is long!  Iam ecstatic to announce Marina and Lacey are now starting to school second level.  This is seriously one

of the most improved pairs I have EVER seen!  Excellent job Marina!  You are truly a superstar!

Tia & Panda:  Tia, one of my newest students has been riding here for about 5 months.  Tia and hermom, Cassy, have been such a great addition to our Roze-El "family".  Tia started leasing Panda from mejust a short time ago.  She has been doing an awesome job with him. I am very excited to see Tia'scontinued progress throughout the new year.  She took Panda to a show at the end of January and wonboth of her intro classes!  GO Tia!

Naomi & Epic:  Naomi, my student of 2 years, has been leasing Epic for over a year.  She is doing amazing work with him.  They did a show in January and got really great scores!  They are starting toschool first level.  It is super fun to watch them grow as a team.  I am looking forward to seeing themin the show ring this year, perhaps even in a rated show.  One of Naomi's biggest challenges with Epic, was getting him to  go "long and low".  Well, now he is doing it over and over again... missionaccomplished!

 Jennifer & Savannah:  Jennifer attended our Diva Days event last summer and I had lots of funteaching her!  She has an extensive dressage background.  After a few years off , having 2 adorable boys,she is back in the dressage scene!  She is currently leasing Savannah to "get back in the saddle".  Shehas earned her bronze medal through the USDF and is working on getting her silver.  I am currently helping her find an FEI horse.  It will be so exciting to see her going down the center line again! Good Luck Jennifer!

More from Kandis . . .CAVALLETTI/SWITCH CLASS

Hope you are all having a wonderful start to your new year! I am excited to let you know about the new cavalletti/switch class I’m off ering, an upcoming event. I am starting a new class this year which I hope willbe both educational and fun for riders and horses of all ages and levels.

Class details: Classes are limited to 4 riders/horses. There will be several riding patterns including cavallettisand cones. Centered Riding® exercises ( mounted ) will be incorporated into these classes. Riders will havethe opportunity ( only if you want to ) to switch horses several times during the class.

Purpose: To allow riders to achieve “connection” with their horses in a diff erent setting. As many of youknow, most of the lessons I teach are private. So, providing these classes will give riders an opportunity todo things a little diff erently and increase awareness in other areas. Riding in a group setting is really fun and

brings new challenges.

Date: March 7th ( Sunday  )

Time: 1pm-3 pm

Cost: $55 per rider on your own horse, $70 with a school horse, $10 haul-in fee.

FYI: I plan on doing this class with all age groups, so please let me know who is interested. I will schedule asmany classes as needed to accommodate everyone. (  The cost and time will vary depending on age ).

Please feel free to call or email with any questions you have. I am really looking forward tothis new addition to Roze-El’s agenda!

STABLE STORIES

Who Dat Lookin’ At Me?

As Sparky, our 28” miniature

stud horse, was wandering

around the acreage nibbling

some new grass sprouting

up here and there, hehappened to come upon the

“other” Sparky! “Whoa!

How on earth can there be

another fellow on the farm

that’s as handsome as me?

And he keeps LOOKIN’ at

me! And he’s SQUEALIN’ at

me! And he even has the

nerve to STRIKE at me!”

Golly, this was hilarious!

Sparky was squealing andstriking at “the other guy”

who wasn’t about to be

intimidated! Sparky studied

the situation for quite awhile

before he decided the copy

cat was pretty boring, and he

moved on to greener and

more interesting pastures.

Notice the reflection of the

other horses in the

background wondering whatthe heck was going on.

(UPDATE: Sparky now thigs

he has a new friends, so her

hangs out with him every

day).

In loving memory of my dear parents, Rozella & Elmer

Mom and Daddy,Roze-El Stables is named and dedicated in memory of you and

the wonderful carefree years of my Montana childhood. You provided me with a life that to some is only a storybook fantasy.

My prayer is that this farm will allow my family to experience

the same happiness I knew as your child . . .

Lying in the clover on warm summer days watching the

hummingbirds float about the hollyhocks;

 Wading in the little creek that trickled through the pasture;

Imagining the thrill of horse racing as I rocked wildly on the

rocking horse Daddy made for me;

Picnics by the creek with Mom –

savoring sandwiches made from her freshly baked bread;

Mom teaching me to love the wildflowers, and gently gathering

small bouquets of buttercups & shootingstars from the nearby woods;

Happily nestling in the specially built box attached next to Daddy’s seat

on the old Farmall, often falling asleep to the red tractor’s noisy drone;

 Waiting anxiously to get a glimpse of the bluebirds

 when it was time for them to return to their house perched atop the fencepost;

 Welcoming all those new spring babies lying snuggled in their fresh straw beds –

lambs, piglets, kittens, chicks, and my favorite, the calves;

Sitting on the feed box, watching Daddy milk “Yudy” (Swedish for "Judy")

and squealing with delight when he pointed the “milk supply” at the

 barn kitties, who were experts at catching the airborne milk stream . . .

 And the pleasantries of my youth go on and on, but perhaps my most treasured

moments are those I spent riding, grooming, and just loving ol’ Queen,

the only babysitter I ever knew.

Mom and Daddy, I love you and I miss you.

Roze-El Stables is the culmination of many dreams, starting way back before many of you were even born!Through the years, school, marriage, career, children . . . well, you know how it goes . . . diverted the “horse”dreams. Unrelated life events began to consume my thoughts and energy. I have been a happy person, and Idon’t regret the years I didn’t have a horse of my own, but my friend recently reminded me, “Sherry, you arenow complete because you are once again surrounded by your horses.” How insightful she is! Perhaps mydedication letter best describes how important our Port Orchard farm is to me and my family. If you haven’talready read it, here it is.
