Box 2184 - Riverview, MI 48193 www.pawsofmichigan.com 2010 Board of Directors Elected Congratulations to our 2010 Board of Directors: Board Officers President Kris Jordan Vice Pres. Chrissy Romano Secretary Karin Pigott Treasurer Angel Parsons Directors-at-Large Velda Bohler Valerie Koths Terra Muscat We applaud these members for their willingness to serve on our Board of Directors and congratulate the newly elected or re-elected members on their two-year terms. Special thanks to our outgoing Board members, Erin Beard (Secretary, 2008-2009) and Eve Howell (Vice President 2008, Director-at-Large 2009) for their two years of service as Board members. We appreciate all of your time, energy and hard work during your terms! A big thank you is in order, as well, to Karin Pigott for her two years of service as Treasurer. The Treasurer position is arguably one of the most difficult positions in the organization, requiring a huge amount of time and attention to details. Karin did an amazing job with our books, and we’re all very grateful to her. Founding Member Dies Lorraine Mlostek, one of the founding members of P.A.W.S. of Michigan (PAWS), passed away after a courageous battle fighting cancer. Lorraine was a very good friend to all. One of her best friends from PAWS was diagnosed with breast cancer, and Lorraine was the first person she called. Lorraine was her “rock” and support. Shortly, thereafter Lorraine was diagnosed with liver cancer, so they began their brave fight together. They would discuss treatments, diets and “feelings.” They lost their hair together and cried together. They managed to do all of this while continuing to do something they both loved, which was volunteering for PAWS. Lorraine was the “sign maker” for events and she created the cage cards for our adoptable pets. Until the Spring of 2009, she handled all of the recordkeeping duties of PAWS, along with beautiful personalized thank you notes to people who contributed to the organization. In addition, she also managed the membership roster for the group. Lorraine kept herself very busy and donated not only her time, but also necessary donated the supplies, stamps, paper, and any other items that were necessary to perform her duties to the cause. Lorraine was very dedicated to helping animals. Not many people know that her original involvement in animal rescue was fostering kittens. Years later, she would keep in touch with the adopters of those kittens and always made time to answer questions regarding cats and kittens and rescue work in general. Often she got phone calls from people who had been given her number to answer rescue questions. If she didn’t know the answer, she would manage to find someone who did. She was always willing to go the extra mile! Through her rescue work Lorraine developed a loyal camaraderie of friends. Not “just friends” but really good friends. She made the effort to take an interest in peoples lives. She truly cared and was always ready to step in and help out no matter what the need. She was a mentor to many who were both in the group or not part of the PAWS at all. While Lorraine was feeling her worst, she would continue to visit a friend’s mom who was very sick and in a nursing home. She and would bring her little treats that she knew the individual liked. Lorraine had a true volunteer spirit. She regularly came to evening adoptions at the Petsmart locations and participated in many PAWS events. Donations made in her honor to PAWS are being contributed to the SNAP Fund which assists in getting more pets and feral cats sterilized in order to help reduce the homeless pet population. This was a cause that Lorraine truly believed in and supported. Lorraine is survived by her three sons, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. PAWS will miss you, Dear Friend!

We Love A Parade! On November 21, 2009, PAWS volunteers bundledup and braved the winter cold once again to walk inthe Wyandotte Christmas Parade. Volunteers anddogs alike had a wonderful time making their waydown Biddle Avenue while waving and passing outcandy to the crowd along the street. Our mascot,“Fluffy” the dog, and all of his other four-leggedfurry friends were a big hit. This is the third yearthat PAWS has participated in the parade, and wecan’t wait until next year!

Love Me Because . . .Immediately following the Wyandotte Christmasparade, PAWS hosted an adoption event in thebasement of the Wyandotte City Hall. This specialevent, “Love Me Because . . .” was designed withthe hope of getting some attention for harder-to-adopt foster and Wyandotte Animal Shelteranimals. Our good friends at Shelter to Home andPug Lug Kingdom rescues joined us in displayingtheir own beautiful animals.

The event was a lot of fun, and we were able to dosome fundraising for the PAWS spay/neuter clinicand pet food bank by having a raffle, snack table(complete with baked goods, coffee & hotchocolate) and our donation jars.

The raffle items were donated by local businesses, and volunteers of PAWS and Pug Lady Kingdom. Many thanks to those who donated or helped withthe raffle. Two Wyandotte Animal Shelter animalswere lucky enough to get adopted at the event, which is proof that adoption events work!

Thanks to all the dedicated volunteers of PAWS,Wyandotte Animal Control, Shelter to Home, andPug Lady Kingdom for helping to make our eventsuccessful and memorable. Countless hours wereput into this event, and the “Love Me Because”chairperson, Terra Muscat, continues to puttogether other events and wishes to thank themany volunteers who helped before, during andafter this event.

Random Act Of KindnessAn Angel Named BarbaraIn August the PAWS food bank received amessage from a lady named, Barbara, who wantedto donate food. PAWS volunteer, Lana Golden, arranged to meet with her. Barbara asked Lana topick out what she needed up to $100, and Barbarapaid for it. This ritual has been repeated at least ahalf a dozen times since August, with the tab oftenapproaching closer to $150. The only informationthat we have about this wonderful, giving person isthat her name is Barbara.

According to Lana, “Barbara told me at the very firstmeeting that she did not want to give her name oraddress because she just wanted to buy the foodfor the animals. She calls monthly or sooner and isone of the most giving people I have ever met. Shealso brings a large box of “people” food for me totake when I drop off the pet food to the FoodPantry. She did say that she supports homelessveterans with food boxes and donates to anotheranimal group. She does not want any credit foranything. She says it is not important how muchmoney a person has, but what a person does withthe money that is important, and that we were puthere to do good for one another. She’s a veryinspiring lady. I always go away feeling veryblessed after being around her.”

Barbara, thank you for all you’ve done to helpPAWS help animals in need, and for being such aninspiration with your selfless caring. You make theworld a better place with all you do.

Global RecognitionCongratulations to Terri Fitzpatrick, who is a recentrecipient of the Marathon Oil Corporation GlobalVolunteer Award. Theaward, which was only one of 31 awardedworldwide by Marathon this year, comes with$1,000 for the recipient’s charity of choice. Terridesignated this award for our spay/neuter clinicfund, which helped in getting us significantly closerto opening the doors for our clinic. Thank you forall of your hard work, Terri, and for earning thiswonderful contribution to our clinic!

She Had A Dream . . . Now It’s A Reality!Amanda Lafferty, a PAWS volunteer, graduatedfrom Michigan State University with a Bachelor’sdegree in Zoology. Her dream has always been towork with big cats. Since she was unable to obtaina career of working with her big kitties immediatelyupon graduation due to the economy, she decidedto volunteer with PAWS in order to stay close to theanimals. Some of her first volunteer jobs were toclean cages and feed and water the shelter animalsat the Wyandotte Animal Shelter. She soondiscovered that the shelter animals were indesperate need of human attention, and she woulddo all she could to provide that to them.

Amanda also realizes the necessity of having catsand dogs spayed and neutered so that the problemof overpopulation can be diminished. She alsoassisted in applying for grants to open the new low-cost spay and neuter clinic and said she looksforward to the time of completion when the clinicwill be a reality and knows the benefits of the clinicwill bring so much to Downriver. Amanda statedthat her participation as a volunteer, along with theexperiences she received, were very beneficial andwill aid her for the rest of her life.

Volunteering with PAWS has already helped makeher dream a reality. She is now an exotic cat internat Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas. This is a non-profit organization that rescuesabused and abandoned big cats. She works withtigers, lions, leopards, cougars, bears and smallercat species. She happily works six days a week, she has found her responsibilities are very similarto what she experienced as a volunteer at theWyandotte Animal Shelter – but on a muchLARGER scale!

Some of her additional responsibilities includeanimal husbandry, behavioral observations, recordkeeping, giving daily tours, landscaping, building new habitats and performing upkeep onthem, as well as sorting and preparing meat forfeeding. Each day a meeting is held where thecaretakers report something unique that made theirday better. That usually includes somethingadorable that one of the cats may have done.Working here has been a life-changing experienceand being around big cats every day and knowingthat she makes a difference in their life is part whathas helped fulfill her dream. Amanda said shefeels so very fortunate to have received thisopportunity, and she is glad that PAWS played apart in that journey. To learn more about TCWR orto assist with their leopard habitat, go to theirwebsite at: turpentinecreek.org.

Spotlight Volunteers Offer A Variety Of TalentsCongratulations and a big thanks to our mostrecent Spotlight Volunteers:

Winter 2010 Spotlight VolunteerSandy Roberts has been chosen the winter 2010spotlight volunteer based partly on her love for theanimals.

Sandy is one of the founding members of PAWSand is proud of that fact. Sandy participates inmany of the PAWS events and is also known asFluffee The Clown. She has strutted her clownpersonality at the last two PAWS In The Parkevents. Fluffee’s love of clowning came aboutwhen she decided the world needed to be ahappier place, and it needed to laugh more often. Her real desire with clowning is to offer her talentsto special needs children and the aged.

She considers herself a “foster failure,” since shedid attempt to foster her big boy cat, Sunny, butdidn’t have the heart to give him up, so sheadopted him. Unfortunately that ended herfostering career. She was afraid she would end upbeing “that cat lady” if she fostered anymore.

You know a person is an animal lover when, as achild, she was better known as the Pied Piper ofLincoln Park. She would often bring every animalwho crossed her path home (but always told hermom, “they followed me home”) – even if it were acat who had died. As a very young child, Sandybrought the cat home, and handed over to hermother and told her mother to “fix it!”

In her past, she has had animals from cats, todogs, fish to frogs and snakes to alligators. Yes,can you imagine a store selling a baby alligator to a10-year old? It happened, but Dad wasn’t realthrilled about it, and once home it really did scarethe entire family – including Sandy, so back to thestore it went by an unhappy father!

Sandy spends what little spare time she hasvolunteering at the Wyandotte Animal Shelter. That is truly her love and escape from life’s ups anddowns. You can see Sandy at the shelter almostevery Monday and Friday evening.

We appreciate all Sandy does for PAWS, theshelter, but especially for her love for the animals.

November Spotlight Volunteers –Marie & Amber Burbo

We appreciate thiswonderful mom and daughter team along with all ofour young Team PAWS members!

Sheila hosted the firstcommittee meeting at her home. In addition, bothPete and Sheila volunteer at the Wyandotte shelterand have helped at several major adoption events.

A special thank you to all of these wonderfulvolunteers for their time and dedication. You makeus what we are!!

Rescue AngelsTail tucked between your legs; confusion in youreyes. I know it's hard to understand that someoneheard your cries. When loneliness is all you knowand pain is all you feel, and no one can be trusted, and hunger's all too real. That's the time the Lordsees you and lets you know He's there. That'swhen He sends His messengers – the hearts thatlove and care. Yes, rescuers are angels; youcannot see their wings. They keep them neatlyfolded as they do their caring things – the medicineto make you well, good food to make you strongand finally to help you learn that hugs are neverwrong. The perfect place then must be found; thehome where you can live secure and safe, andhappy with joy to get and give when you reach your“Forever Home” – your place to feel whole; theAngels smile, and off they go to save another soul.

Happy Tails Are Here Again!Juliet Sends A Letter“Dear Foster Mom, Terra, and Foster Family,

I just have to let you know how good things arehere in my furrever home. I have endless animalsiblings and even a little human one too! We playtag and chase each other for fun! Figment, a kitty, tries to act like she doesn't like me, but let's beserious – it's me we are talking about! What's notto love? Those bigger things are Bella, Kara andMaggie. Then there is a little human – the bighumans call him Slade, and he’s not too bad either. When it is time to finally go to bed at night, I like tocrawl into his room and snuggle up next to him.We both like to be warm, so it works out very nicelyfor the two of us. There’s also a big Dad human. He calls me "New Cat." My new mom is nice likeyou, and I let her think she's teaching me trickswhen she whips out the treat bag. Ehhhh, sometimes you gotta let the humans think they areteaching you things – it’s good for their ego, andwhile they are "teaching me" they just keep givingme more treats! Not that I’m a pig or anything.Speaking of pigs, I’ve also adopted two of them,Frank and Finnegan. It’s funny, but I really lovethose two girls (but I do wonder why they have“boy” names.) All they have to do is whistle, and Icome running! They are a constant source ofentertainment! They squawk, chirp and whistle andlove to pig wrestle! I protect my pigs from danger(like Maggie the dog), and I keep them warm bycuddling the wall of the cage where they snuggle. Ihave a big bed to lay on, complete with the prettyblanket you gave me. I also have endless toys andtreats, which is always a good thing!

I just need to tell you all that you gave to me. Youwere there when I was born, you worried about me,cared for me, took me to the vet and provided forme like I really was your own. But the BEST thingyou did for me was that you NEVER gave up hopethat there was a good furrever home out there forme. With your patience and love, you helped me tobecome the cat I am today. I love you, MammaTerra. Be sure to thank my foster Dad, Noel, forputting up with me "testing" out all those awesomecat trees he made and for agreeing to a ChristmasDay adoption. Also, tell your little humans, Carissa,Brendan and Matthew I love them for teaching mehow to play and for giving me the nickname"Timbit." Also, please tell Bella that I miss her andwill write her soon.

All My love,

Juliet, the cat that nobody wanted . . . UNTILNOW!”

Dexy Finds A Home! While looking on the internet for area shelters,Dexy’s mom came across Petfinder.com. She hadjust gotten engaged and knew a happy homewouldn’t be complete without a loving, furry friend.Seeing all the animals that needed a home broughttears to her eyes. Determined to find a dog to calltheir own, she came across Dexy's picture, and itwas love at first sight. Dexy is a beautiful shepherdmix with a wonderful personality. She had beenabandoned on the street. The nice person whofound her gave her to PAWS. On October 3, 2008,she was officially adopted. It has now been a littleover a year, and she has proven to be an amazingpet. She is the source of smiles each day and isfull of life in her new home. Her new mom and dadsaid their home wouldn't be the same without her. They expressed their gratefulness and wanted tothank PAWS for continuing the fight to findinghomes for homeless animals.

JAWS kicked off theiractivity by having a pet food drive where theycollected food to donate to a local food pantry. They are hosted a bake sale for Valentine's Dayand give out bookmarks with information on animaltesting and companies that are cruelty free. Theirnext project is to prepare informational posters forBe Kind to Animals week in May! Kaley says“Thanks to all the PAWS members for supportingus, we couldn't do it without you!"

Dress For The Animals’ SuccessIn November, PAWS was lucky enough to be therecipient of a large donation through the RiverviewSchool District’s Casual Clothes for a Cause (CCC)Day. Once each month, members of the staff areallowed to dress in jeans for a minimum donation of$5. The recipient groups are nominated by thestaff and chosen by a vote. This is the second yearthat PAWS received funds through the generosityof the Riverview Schools for CCC. This year thedonation netted $708.80 for our general fund!! Bigsloppy puppy and purrfect kitty kisses to all the staffin the Riverview School District for your ongoingsupport of PAWS, and especially to PAWSmembers, Amy VanSickle and Erin Beard, fornominating and soliciting votes for PAWS for theCCC program!

Later in November, Riverview Community HighSchool students who are members of the Art Club, chose to help raise funds for PAWS’ pet food bankprogram by hosting a “Sweats for Pets” day at theirschool. Jackie Kappeler, who is an art clubmember, stated, “We all know how difficult it is forfamilies right now to just put food on their owntables, so we wanted to help out needy familieswho may not be able to afford pet food.” Studentsat the high school were allowed to wear sweats toschool for the day if they made a minimumdonation of a dollar. The $324.39 collected helpedfill the shelves at our partner food banks. The petfood bank program is an ongoing initiative wherefurther donations can be made throughout the year. The students are already planning anotherfundraiser to keep their efforts going! Good jobRCHS!!

Second Annual Wyandotte Animal ShelterValentine’s Open HouseOn February 13, the Wyandotte Animal Sheltersponsored an adoption program to find your“Furrever” love at their Second Annual WyandotteAnimal Shelter Valentine’s Open House.

Chuck Gillenwater, Animal Control Officer for theCity of Wyandotte, and volunteers at the WyandotteAnimal Shelter welcomed visitors to the shelter tofind their “furever friend.” Visitors were assuredthat their purrfect cat or dog was waiting to beadopted!

The public toured the recently remodeled facility tosee how the stray cats and dogs in the City ofWyandotte are cared for. The Wyandotte AnimalShelter has a core group of volunteers (many ofwhom are PAWS members) who assist the animalcontrol officer in the care and adoption of theanimals.

Many people have a vision of an animal shelterbeing a cold and scary place, and it was importantto feature the shelter and dispel the myth that mostshelters carry. Refreshments were offered to allvisitors, and dog and cat related items wereavailable for purchase. All proceeds went directlyto the care of sick or injured animals at the shelter. There is an adoption application which must becompleted in order to adopt the animals. It is alsopossible to go online to the shelter’s Petfinder site(http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/MI363.html)to complete an application at home to see if youwould be pre-approved to adopt a furry friend.Anyone who adopted a cat or dog during the eventreceived a Valentine gift bag for themselves andanother one for their new furry friend.

The Wyandotte Animal Shelter is located at 1170Grove Street, between 11th and 13th Streets, nextto the Recycle Center. The fee for cat adoption is$60 (cash only) and includes spay or neuter, combo test, and age-appropriate vaccinations. Thefee for dog adoption is $85 (cash only) andincludes spay or neuter, heartworm test, and age-appropriate vaccinations. See all of our animalsavailable for adoption on petfinder.com!

For more information, please feel free to contactthe Wyandotte Animal Shelter at (734)324-4445 oremail us at [email protected].

Creation

When God had made the earth and sky,The flowers and the trees,

He then made all the animalsThe fish, the birds and bees.

And when at last He'd finishedNot one was quite the same.

He said I'll walk this world of mineAnd give each one a name.

And so He traveled far and wideAnd everywhere He went,

A little creature followed HimUntil its strength was spent.

When all were named upon the earthAnd in the sky and sea,

The little creature said, "Dear Lord,There's no name left for me."Kindly, the Father said to him

"I've left you to the end.I've turned my own name back to front

And called you, DOG, my friend".
