Assists Local Veteran to Save Beloved Dog 10-year-old Kiddy required emergency On May 15th, 2017 Tanner’s P.A.W.S. received a phone call from Howard Simmons, a local disabled veteran regarding his beloved dog of ten years, Kiddy. He reported that Kiddy seemed lethargic and unable to walk. She hadn’t eaten and worst of all, she was bleeding vaginally. Mr. Simmons needed immediate help to save his dog. The board members of Tanner’s P.A.W.S. felt assisting Howard would be a great way to honor him and his service to our country. Immediate action was taken and a board member transported Howard and his dog Kiddy to Town and Country Veterinary Hospital. An anonymous donor covered the cost of Kiddy’s initial exam, but knowing surgery would cost close to $2,000, a post was made to our Facebook page. In the spirit of the upcoming Memorial Day Holiday, community members responded to our plea. “Dogs play such an important role in the lives of our vets. I want to help this beloved dog return to his vet. Prayers for both of them.” “Thank you for your service and I wish you both a speedy recovery.” “It’s an honor to help one of our veterans. Thank you Mr. Simmons for your service to our country.” Kiddy was diagnosed with hemorrhagic endometriosis. To save her life, Kiddy underwent emergency surgery to remove her ovaries and uterus. Her prognosis was good and she was given a 90% survival rate. Surgery went well and when Kiddy was well enough to be discharged, Tanner’s P.A.W.S. board members went live on Faceook to reunite a tearful Howard with his beloved Kiddy. 1 CONTENTS Tanner’s P.A.W.S. Tanner’s P.A.W.S Opens Adoption HouseTanner’s P.A.W.S. celebrated the official ribbon cutting ceremony on June 27th.

Tanner’s P.A.W.S. held the official ribbon cutting ceremony at 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 27th, 2017. In front of a small crowd of great supporters, and with much anticipation, the Tanner’s P.A.W.S. Adoption House opened it’s doors in the heart of the Gaffer District on Market Street in Corning, NY. Located at 117 West Market Street, the Adoption House is sure to facilitate the adoption process. “Having a location not only promotes more awareness, it gives people someplace to come and look at the animals we have for adoption, and hopefully choose to adopt an animal instead of buying from a pet store,” says Christie Speciale, founder of Tanner’s P.A.W.S..Tanner’s P.A.W.S. was able to purchase the building with donations from board members and anonymous benefactors. The brand new kennel space allows Tanner’s P.A.W.S. to house between four and eight dogs, depending on size, and between four and six kittens. The Adoption House has a boutique filled with merchandise, collars, leashes, bowls, and offers customized engraved identification tags.Upstairs, there’s a conference room used for meetings. It can also be rented out for birthday parties. The Say Cheese Portrait Studio offers pet photography. There’s a fully outfitted grooming salon vital to the care and maintenance of resident animals. Grooming appointments can be made with a licensed groomer at the Adoption House for your convenience. Please contact us for more information regarding rental space or to make a grooming appointment. With the opening of the Adoption House, Tanner’s P.A.W.S. is looking for dedicated volunteers. If you are interested in helping us help the animals, please fill out our volunteer application on our website or stop into the Adoption House and say hello. The next volunteer meeting will be held in September.Operating hours are generally 10AM to 5PM Monday - Friday and every other weekend. At times, the Adoption House will close for events such as transports or large intakes. It’s always a good idea to call ahead as the operation of the Adoption House depends solely on volunteer availability.

VOLUNTEERSPOTLIGHT

LISA JOENSLONG-TERM SUPPORTER

As some of you may know, running a successful animal rescue is a team effort. Many of those efforts happen behind the scenes, and although not always visible, they are vital to our success. Meet Lisa. Lisa and her husband TJ are animal lovers and two of our biggest supporters. They share in our passion, our vision, and are ALWAYS willing to lend a hand. Lisa and TJ are known as our road warriors and drop everything to transport dogs into rescue. They’ve not only logged hundreds of miles, they selflessly support our fundraising efforts and give to dogs in need. They are also proud adopters of a Tanner’s P.A.W.S. alumni, Roxy, a Shiba Inu, adopted this past spring. They are responsible for her incredible transformation from stray to beauty queen! A thousand thanks Lisa and TJ, we appreciate you!

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT

ZEUSMALE, AGE 8 MONTHS ENGLISH BULLDOG/AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIER MIX

I’m handsome and I know it.. and I’m not afraid to show it! I’m one SWEET machine! At 8-months-old, I’m one large, strong boy but I’m a softy at heart! I love people, I love kids, dogs are my friends but those furry felines aren’t my thing. There’s no way my breed should scare you, but I’m also not the type of dog for any handler. I’m a strong boy so I need a strong handler.. or one that will work with me on how to properly walk on a leash. I’m crate trained and did I mention.. handsome?! If you want to meet me, please fill out an application on our website: www.tannerspaws.org.

Otis the Pug Evaluated at CornellOtis, a young pug, tossed around and neglected, was suffering from a neurological issue.

As you know, Tanner’s P.A.W.S. saves dogs that are in at risk situations. This is Otis’ story. Otis is a young pug who has known three different owners in his very short life. In his surrender application, it was noted that he, “walks in circles plus sideways. He falls a lot. He has been going through what we think are seizures.” “Not altered. Not vaccinated.” “We got him from a friend that won’t take him back.” Our hearts sank and we immediately took action. While one board member made an emergency appointment at Town and Country Veterinary Hospital, another sped in Otis’ direction. Otis was evaluated that afternoon at T&C. Bloodwork revealed that liver and kidney functions were normal, but his white count, sodium and chloride levels were elevated. A serial X-ray was normal. Although his cranial nerves were intact, a definitive diagnosis could not be made. A week later, Otis showed SOME improvement, but Dr. Hardiksy felt he may have GME. Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis, or GME, is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. In order to get a definitive diagnosis, a spinal tap and MRI would have to be performed. On Thursday, April 6th, Otis was evaluated by the neurology department at Cornell University’s Small Animal Companion Hospital. He underwent a MRI and a cerebrospinal fluid analysis.Otis was diagnosed with Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL), a rare, inherited neurodegenerative disease. It is characterized by the accumulation of cellular waste products in neurons, retinal cells, and other cells throughout the body. It is a rare, likely genetic condition affecting dogs 1-2 years old. NCL is progressive and there is no treatment available. Our goal was to get a definitive diagnosis for our Otis. And although our hearts are completely shattered, we will continue to do whatever it takes to keep him comfortable. We are incredibly grateful to Otis’ team at Cornell: Dr. Sofia Cerda-Gonzalez, Chief of Neurology, Blake Travis, DVM, and Daniel Cimino. Each of them showed Otis detailed attention, unwavering patience, and genuine, heartfelt concern. We would like to thank those who donated towards Otis’ care, his auction supporters, Pug Squad Fundraising, and Cinder and Bella’s A Furry Tail Auction.
