On July 4, when employees arrived at the shelter, they found a box at the gate with 6 - 2 day old puppies! That is a terrible thing to do to a puppy, abandoned without a mama! And SIX of them!!! Well, the shelter staff set to work, cleaned them up, made them a nice temporary bed, got all the formula ready and one of the employees took the puppies home for the first week - bottle feeding every 2 hours. You have to make sure you get the formula just right hoping they are getting enough nutrients and that they don't try swallow too much or eat too fast and get choked. No one was getting much sleep at Mom #1's house, except the puppies!

The next week, a volunteer took the puppies home and by this time, the feedings were spaced to every 3-4 hours. But there was still all the cleaning and cleaning up after. They were growing and eating pretty well, but still being bottle fed. At this stage they are so hungry, you are never sure if you are giving them enough food or too much. It is a very tiring, tedious task and very emotional for the surrogate mom. But, Mom #2 was going out of town for two weeks.

So, the next volunteer took over, Mom #3. By this time, at 3-1/2 weeks old, they were able to eat a little canned puppy food, but still being bottle fed. At 4 weeks the bottle was taken away and the formula was mixed with a little dry puppy food. Slowly, but surely, they got used to

the canned and dry mixed together and were eating well, now on a 4-5 hour feeding schedule.

Now they are 6 weeks old - at 8 weeks, the puppies will be old enough to go to the shelter. They are eating and playing well, very healthy, happy puppies and will be available for adoption the first part of October.

We know anyone that is a devoted follower of the Tri-Lakes Humane Society would never dump puppies (or kittens) at our gate, but please pass on the word to anyone that would even consider such a thing. It is not good. We are not well equipped to take care of newborns. The odds of saving newborn puppies is very small. We feel very fortunate that we have been able to save these 6 little cuties!

Russian artist Svetlana Petrova has become known for her online artwork of famous portraits featuring her cat Zarathustra. When her mother died she ‘inherited’ Zarathustra, a rather overweight ginger cat. "Zarathustra likes posing and is a really intelligent cat. He likes to lie on his back and make strange faces like he's speaking with somebody, so I began to take photos of him and inserted them into paintings.

Don’t forget our Thrift Shop!

Humane Society Thrift Shop 22173 Main Street

Reeds Spring, MO 65737 417-272-8686

The Humane Society Thrift Shop is located right on Main Street (Hwy 413) in historic downtown Reeds Spring. Reeds Spring is becoming the mecca of shopping in Stone

County. There are several antique shops and flea markets, like Whirly-Gigs and, of course, the Thrift Shop. You can spend a day in this quaint little town and find all kinds of treasures.

Lots of bargains to be found!

It’s story time at the Animal Rescue League in Berks County in Birdsboro, Penn., where dozens of kids come to the shelter each week to read to the adoptable cats, improve their skills and provide comfort to cats awaiting their forever homes. According to the shelter’s Marketing & Communications Director, Beth Ireland, the Reading Buddies program is the brainchild of ARL’s program director, Kristi Rodriquez, whose own son struggled with reading. Rodriguez knew pets were often helpful in providing assistance to young readers so she brought Sean, a fifth grader, into the shelter to read to the cats. He loved it so much that he asked to come back.

Kids Read to Homeless Cats and Everybody Wins

Six months later, Sean has shown remarkable improvement in his reading and now reads to the family’s dogs at home. The children find the cats a non-threatening and supportive audience, while the cats enjoy human interaction and the rhythmic sound of the child’s voice soothing. For every five books read, the kids can earn points for prizes. “But it’s such a secondary thing to the kids,” says Ireland. “The prize for them is the opportunity to hang out with the cats. “

The ASPCA published an article recently indicating the annual cost to a No-Kill Animal Rescue Facility to provide an animal with the general necessities –Housing/Food/Basic Medical Care

(Vaccinations – No Major Medical)

Large Dogs $1,800.00 Annually Medium Dogs $1,600.00 Annually Small Dogs $1,400.00 Annually Felines $1,000.00 Annually
