On April 29, more than 35 local high school students were honored and recognized for their achievements as finalists in the 2013/2014 season of In the Know.

For more than 31 years on WOSU TV, In the Know contestants from high schools in central and southeast Ohio have been answering challenging and thought-provoking questions on topics ranging from science to history to visual arts and pop culture. The Ohio State University awards scholarships to the top four teams at the end of the tournament season.

This year, the St. Charles Preparatory School team was celebrated as Champion, after beating Dublin Scioto in the final broadcast round. Certificates were presented to Semifinalists William V. Fisher Catholic and New Albany, and Quarterfinalists Bishop

Hartley, Columbus Academy, Dublin Coffman and Dublin Jerome.

The awards banquet for the In the Know teams, their advisors, and families was held on the top floor of AEP’s corporate headquarters, this year’s sponsor of the long-running quiz show.

On April 10, more than 50 teens checked out the Ross mediaLab at WOSU@COSI during the SURGE Columbus “Ignite!” event.

SURGE Columbus is a collaborative of museums, libraries, and media organizations in Columbus empowering teens to discover and pursue their learning interests outside of school by connecting them with mentors, digital and cultural resources, and each other.

Supported by a generous grant from Battelle, SURGE Columbus has creative spaces with free programs to connect teens at: Columbus Metropolitan Library, Columbus Museum of Art, COSI, Wexner Center for the Arts, and WOSU Public Media. At the Ross mediaLab at WOSU@COSI, teens are given a ‘starter kit’ to explore digital media. With two mentors from Ohio State University, and the on-site guidance of WOSU producer Shawn Likley, and Educational Services Director, Marcelita

SURGE Columbus: Ignite! Haskins, teens are encouraged to design their own digital media projects.

At the “Ignite!” launch event in April, teens were introduced to the space, dabbled with the green screen, indulged in free pizza and were shuttled to the other participating organizations to check out their creative studios.

The ultimate goals for SURGE Columbus are to create more welcoming, open, accessible, and connected learning opportunities for Columbus teens, and help them become creative citizens who can actively participate in civil discourse, and develop their 21st century learning skills.

To learn more about SURGE Columbus, visit surgecolumbus.org. To reserve a seat and time with the WOSU Public Media mentors, email [email protected].

The St. Charles Preparatory School Team reviews their strategy during a break in the action.

89.7 NPR News & Classical 101 Highlights

R A D I O H I G H L I G H T S

The All-Day NPR News Station

WOSU FM, NPR Increase Service on Mobile Devices

By Michael Thompson, News and Public Affairs Director

Computers are here to stay.

It’s a reminder I use often when we have to learn how to operate new software or hardware. And it’s the brutally wonderful fact we radio broadcasters must remember as we look for ways to connect with our audiences. Not too long ago there was only one way to enjoy NPR and WOSU’s local news – the radio – in the bedroom, kitchen, car or office. Those days are long gone and we’re adapting.

Our website wosu.org for several years has offered robust central Ohio news coverage online, and we also connect with digital users on Facebook and Twitter. The new opportunity is the mobile device– the smartphone, tablet and internet-connected dashboard.

More and more listeners are listening to NPR and 89.7 on these devices. Last year we launched with the WOSU Public Media mobile app which allows listeners to hear our live on-air signal as well as listen to our news stories and favorite programs on demand, wherever they are.

NPR also is moving quickly to take advantage of the new technology. It works with WOSU and other stations to offer world, national and local news on the NPR mobile app. And last month, NPR became the first provider of news/talk programming on iTunes Radio. Soon iTunes radio will offer WOSU’s thoughtful stories and programming via the NPR channel.

These developments present challenges and opportunities. First WOSU must offer its services on these devices. We don’t have a choice. It’s where more and more of our audience is going to get their news and listen

to our programs. Just like newspapers have to succeed on the web, so must radio stations succeed on mobile devices.

But the opportunities are endless. First, you don’t have to be within our radio signal to enjoy our content. If you’re going to Chicago on a business trip, you can wake up to WOSU’s Morning Edition on your smartphone with our mobile app. We’ve heard from a listener who bought her retired father in Florida an iPhone just so he could listen to 89.7’s Bluegrass Ramble. If our listeners miss an investigative news report or an interesting interview on All Sides with Ann Fisher – they can get it with just a few swipes and taps. We’ve always been a 24-hour news service and we’re still an around-the-clock resource – but now on your schedule.

Our goal at 89.7 NPR News is to provide listeners the most comprehensive world, national and central Ohio news that you can find anywhere. We’ve done it for decades on the radio and we’ll do it for decades more in the digital world.

Because, computers are here to stay.
