Creating Community, One Story at a Time

WOSU MemberCard Benefit of the Month

As many of you know, the landmark Emmy® award-winning series, Columbus Neighborhoods, is back in production.

The project, originally developed to celebrate the city’s bicentennial, included a series of six hour-long documentaries with storytelling sessions, public forums and lesson plans highlighting the neighborhoods of: The Short North, German Village, King-Lincoln, University District, Downtown/Franklinton, and Olde Towne East.

Now, as we continue to strive for a better understanding of our community – our sense of place –six more documentaries will be produced through 2015/2016 covering these communities: South Side, Clintonville, Worthington, Bexley, The Tri-Villages (Upper Arlington, Marble Cliff, Grandview Heights), and New Americans (an examination of the immigrant experience in Columbus).

To kick off the next phase of Columbus Neighborhoods, tune in to the first six segments from the documentary series Sunday nights at 8pm on WOSU TV, starting June 16.

And, you can find us in your community throughout the summer: Join past and present residents as they share their memories and thoughts about their neighborhoods through recorded interviews and digital storytelling sessions. Also, the WOSU Speakers Bureau will share anecdotes and information

about initiatives surrounding the Columbus Neighborhoods project through civic and social groups across central Ohio.

Just look for the “I Heart C’Bus” symbol in your community for events, activities and information related to Columbus Neighborhoods. Or contact Cindy Gaillard, ([email protected]) if you have a compelling piece of history, photo or book about Columbus that you want to share.

This month offers some intriguing additions to the guitar, including music for lute, a mandolin ensemble, a mandolin and orchestra concerto, flute and guitar, guitar and harpsichord, and a concerto for guitar and bandoneon. Exciting newer artists will be on hand as well as long-time favorites.

June 1: A rising star in the world of classical guitar, Miloš Karadaglić will be featured in a couple of selections. He hails from the small Baltic country of Montenegro but has already travelled far and wide. Christopher Parkening will play a concerto by Vivaldi, and there will be music for flute and guitar with Laurel Zucker and Richard Savino.

June 8: The Toulouse Mandolin Ensemble will play a Slavonic dance by Dvorak, the Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yang performs Variations on the Carnival of Venice, and John Williams will perform an arrangement of a Schubert sonata with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

June 15: The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet plays an opera overture by Rossini, and Pepe Romero follows with Giuliani’s solo guitar tribute to Rossini. Mandolin player Peter Ostroushko tackles a Vivaldi concerto in its original version, and father and son team Konrad and Thomas
