Classical Music All Day, Every Day
Travel Across the Fifty States on The American SoundSaturdays at 6pm with host Jennifer Hambrick
Celebrating American Symphonies on Symphony at 7Monday through Friday at 7pm with host John Rittmeyer
When we celebrated Independence Day, most of us had a good dose of All-American music by the likes of Sousa, Copland and Gershwin. Now seems like a good time to take this one step further and look at the larger American music landscape.
When this country was first formed, music was, as you would expect, mostly in the European tradition. Newly-arrived composers were busy trying to establish an “American sound.” No less than Antonin Dvorak attempted to show American composers that they had plenty from which to choose when it came to native themes.
Here’s your chance to hear symphonic works by American composers on Symphony at 7 during the month of August, running the gamut from Louis Moreau Gottschalk (b. 1829) and Charles Ives (b. 1874) to Marc Blitzstein (b. 1905) and Michael Daugherty (b. 1954). Plus, don’t forget about The
American Sound which airs from 6–7pm Saturdays with host Jennifer Hambrick. It delves into the world of American music every week.

August 17Brahms Lieder With Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, anne sophie von Otter and Barbara Bonney
It’s hard to imagine that August is here; time to squeeze every ounce of fun, relaxation and, well, summer out of summer! During the month we’ll zigzag the country with music inspired by the personalities of some of our great fifty states. We’ll feast our ears on some delicious late-summer listening, and as summer slips through our fingertips, we’ll pay musical tribute to America’s favorite summer fruit on (believe it or not) National Watermelon Day. Join us Saturday evenings at 6pm for The American Sound with Jennifer Hambrick on Classical 101!

FretworksSaturdays at 7pm with host John Rittmeyer
During the five Saturdays in August, quite a number of fine guitarists and works will be featured on Fretworks. You’ll hear Alexander Lagoya in a concerto by Alessandro Marcello, and the exciting guitarist Milos Karadaglic, from Montenegro, playing the Spanish music of Enrique Granados. Lute virtuoso Paul O’Dette will have music of Simone Molinaro, American Sharon Isbin will play some Rodrigo for guitar and orchestra, and Cuban guitarist Manuel Barrueco will be accompanied by the Latin American Quartet.
Also, you can hear the father and son duo of Angel and Lito Romero play a double concerto by Vivaldi. Scandinavian artists will include Finnish guitarist Timo Korhonen for Villa-Lobos. We’ll even have a Mozart piano sonata arranged for flute and guitar. Join us for a refreshing mix of artists and music Saturday evenings at 7pm with John Rittmeyer on Classical 101.

New Show Helps You “Win” Your Dinner Party
Saturday on Stage with WOSU’s Christopher Purdy
Dinner parties usually are fun, but sometimes the small talk can wear thin. A new program on 89.7 NPR News can help you become the life of the party—even if you’re staying in.
The Dinner Party Download, is a culture show designed to help you dazzle your friends at your next social gathering. Hosted by Brendan Francis Newnam and Rico Gagliano (pictured below), the show is beloved by audiences for its spontaneity and thoughtfulness.
The show unfolds like a dinner party, kicking off with “The Icebreaker”— a joke to warm things up. Next comes “Small Talk,” in which top print and online journalists from around the country share their favorite odd news story of the week. The “Cocktails” portion of the show features a true tale from this week in history with a handcrafted cocktail recipe themed after it. Later, we “Eavesdrop” on an author reading from a hot new release or answer listeners’ burning etiquette questions.
The marquee segment of the show is the “Guest of Honor,” in which hosts Gagliano and Newnam interview some of the most fascinating celebrities in the world and routinely get them to talk about the most unexpected, dinner-party-worthy subjects.
Recent guests have included: filmmaker Sophia Copploa, actors Ellen Page, Colin Firth and Jamie Foxx, novelist Joanna Hersho, comic Kevin Hart and activist Ralph Nader.
You can listen to The Dinner Party Download Saturday afternoons at 4pm, on 89.7 NPR News.
