scarborough glassworks : a space for creative collaboration

this project is set in the seaside town of scarborough in north yorkshire. a town of seagulls, medievil ruins, victorian grandeur, steep topography, rich history and of course 2 penny machines. once a renowned spa town scarborough has succumbed to

scarborough must reinvent and make use of its quirks and charm, championing its public spaces and layered architectural history.

the scheme looks towards the urban renaissance masterplan proposal kissing sleep-ing beauty as a driver for rekindling the seaside resort. to promote the town the scheme focuses upon production as a form of tourism as opposed to the town’s exhaust-ed consumer trades such as gambling and shopping. the scheme revolves around the alchemic craft of glassblowing, promoting both a taught program alongside individual artist’s space. nestled between existing buildings the architecture carves itself from the deep site, addressing the adjacent fronts, provoking exploration of the building whilst providing an alternative model of tourism for the regenerated town.

this model was an initial concept addressing the topographical challenge presented by the site and the processional journey from one front to the other. the typical pedestrian

a journey, interwoven within program exposing and provoking responses between artists and public.

program collage A3

establishing a program was important in deciding the relationship between elements of the program and to outline the types of functional spaces needed to be considered during the design process. The collage highlights the dualism between taught program and public space revolving around a shared, public courtyard that acts as a platform for exposure and entrepre-neurship in Scarborough

creating a section that highlighted the steep difference between the two facades that the building must contend with. the patchwork, mix and match context of the sea front is also juxtaposed with the tall victorian housing on eastborough street.

internal perspective A3

this perspective looks at the relationship between the glass works studios and the public square through glazed roof system. the choice of material and layering of public and private creates moments for interaction within and from outside of the building

technology section 1:50_A2

as part of technical report this section cuts through the front facade of the workshops and classroom. utilising the prevail-ing winds from the north sea as well as utilising heat revocery from the workshops to provide a mechanically controlled heating system. use of external elements provides shading to warmer spaces and protection

exploded axonometric A1

as part of a technological report this axonometric explores seperate elements of the scheme. a hierarchy is established through cast concrete elements providing carved away volumes for workshops whilst glulam timber construction provides a lighter architecture for above the public courtyard. a bespoke roof for the workshops provides interesting moments between the public and private

growing barnsley : promoting urban leisure gardens

barnsley, south yorkshire’s tuscan village, has become a town with its identity in crisis. a strong tie to its market town history, layering of rehabilitation has resulted in

bustle of a market town is unavoidable with a focus upon street life. following the well publicised masterplan by will alsop bringing a much needed optimism to the town a secondary more realistic plan has been acted upon thus putting the town centre into a state of limbo as major reconstruction takes place.

the town became synonymous with ill health as large numbers of cheap and unhealthy food outlets supplied the citizens. whether it be the markets or takeaways the town has become focused upon consuming since the dissolution of coal mills and glassworks as such an alternate focus upon allotments within the barnsley metropolitan district highlighted a lack of platform for this hobby. the potential of a central location could instigate a wider uptake of the pastime consequently promote an integration of healthy eating and lifestyles as a byproduct of the allotment, leisure garden. the build-

courses alongside a research focused seed bank create private spaces, whilst design rooms and workshops allow for keen growers to improve and build upon their existing gardens.

takes over the whole of the square placing a typically marginalised hobby into the epicentre of the urban environment. as regeneration of barnsley progresses the scheme retreats within a recognisable frame structure, creating more permanent structures and place upon the new square. creating a permeable structure was impera-tive as not to privatise a large section of the newly regenerated square, as interaction with material, form and layering plays a key role in the use of the building.

contrasting spaces are to be experienced within the scheme playing upon exterior thresholds and layers of exposure as to

weave the sheds within the regenerated market square.layering of material creates a hierarchy of structure and suggests at function, gabion walls cast playful shadows whilst CLT construction provides warm areas of learning

visual perspective A3

creating a space for programmatic exposure as well as a continuation of Barnsley’s regenerated square was key for this project. the central courtyard presents a space for intrigued members of the public to experience the multiple functions of the sheds as people negotiate multiple layers of the architecture.

stopping to view the new markets. “oh how our barnsley has changed!” the view shows the permeability of the scheme as it faces the new market square. the colonades act as relics of the allotments on the square prompting publi-cuse as part of the market landscape.
