RABBI'S MESSAGE tJutSummer ... Jewish summer camp played a pivotal role in developing my strong Jewish identity, as did my involvement in

youth group and a NFTY trip to Israel (I went for six months, February-August, of my senior year in high school). Of course, the influence of my parents was paramount as well.

Studies confirm that children are much more likely to stay Jewish if they have these "informal education" experiences of summer camp, youth group and youth trips to Israel.

MAZON: A JEWISH RESPONSE TO HUNGER

As Passover approaches, please share this celebration of freedom with those who remain enslaved by hunger and poverty. This year help MAZON prepare for a Pesach shel atid, a Passover of a future time when all who are still shackled by the bonds of poverty, hunger, and injustice are truly free. Your gift to MAZON of chai or whatever you would spend to invite even one extra person to your seder helps hungry families in our own country, in Israel and around the globe.

MAZON donation envelopes will be available at Temple Sholom preceding and during Passover. You can also donate through www.mazon.org.

ISSUES UPDATE

Crime/Drugs/Prostitution: The committee along with Chief of Police Moody met with City School administration seeking to collaborate on introducing Hot Spot Cards into the schools. On April 15, Catholic Central students will use their Service Ministry Day to distribute Hot Spot Cards. Other areas of interest have been identified for Card distribution.

Education/Reading: The district has requested assistance for the Reading First program. Committee members along with JAM's sister organizations met with Ohio Department of Education (ODE) regarding poor reading results. Members of ODE will join political, business and school district officials at an Ohio Reading Summit on February 23.

Hospital location: JAM has endorsed a downtown location and is working to ensure that all voices are heard.

Jobs: JAM is working with organizations for economic and job development in Clark County. County commissioners passed an eighteen-month half-cent sales tax increase to help fund economic development.

Kroger's on S Limestone: This new committee has distributed a survey within this service area. Teams will visit and complete other store comparison sheets.

The Temple's Team needs volunteers and leaders to continue these critical works. Please call Rabbi Garfunkel, Anna Krauss, or myself. We also need your attendance at JAM's annual ACTION ASSEMBLY on April 26. Mark your calendars now.

TEA AND TORAH-Esther and Purim for Adults, Saturday, March 12, 10:00 am

We celebrate Purim as a fun children's holiday, but the Book of Esther could be rated "R" for sex and violence. Did you know that Esther was not the only wife, but part of a harem? That she prepared for one full year with ointments and perfumes for her night with the King? Join us for a 45 minute grown up study of this book and holiday, followed by a brief service. Tea and cookies will be served.
