RABBI REACTS ... L'dor Vador is a morning prayer, a Sisterhood fund, and a Jewish

ideal. And it came to life for me recently. We usually translate L'dor Vador by the words, "from generation to generation".

That's why the Sisterhood years ago gave that name to the fund which honored its octogenarian members by helping youngsters go to OSRUI camp, and still continues to support Youth activities.

That's also why we think of the phrase when we see continuity through generations of families at BJBE. And that may be one reason I love the prayer when Cantor Cory Winter chants it Shabbat mornings (another reason being the...1£'1X he does it) .

But here's how L'dor Vador came to life recently. I am mentoring a third year rabbinic student, Jeremy B. who has a biweekly congregation in Valparaiso, Ind. He has already spent a weekend with me here at Temple. I-le also teaches Hebrew school at Wise Temple, in Cincinnati.

When Jeremy came to visit, he showed me some of the original Hebrew school material he has created to bring more "games" into the classroom. He put together an attractive booklet which other Hebrew school teachers might use.

On the first page, Jeremy dedicated the booklet to hft Hebrew School Principal, the one who has inspired him. Her name turns out to be Ilene Amend Brot.

Ilene Amend Brot, daughter of Sherry and Harvey Amend, grew up here, and is a talented Jewish educator. I levelled as I heard Jeremy talk about her, and felt very good to tell him that his teaching inspiration was a BJBE kid once upon a time, and that both of them shared a rabbi--me! I think he was impressed.

And then I passed the booklet on to QJJL Hebrew School Principal, Rabbi Deborah Gardner Helbraun, who also grew up at BJBE.

L'dor Vador jumps out of the siddur into real Jewish life, right here. From generation to generation. You can level/ too.

Sincerely, Rabbi Mark S. Shapiro

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE ... Dear Congregants: I am so happy as I know you will be with our new Senior Rabbi,

Barnett J. Brickner. The Chairman of the Search Committee, Joe Emsteen, deserves kudos from the whole congregation for the exceptional job he did as well as the inordinate amount of time put into the process. The entire committee deserves our gratitude as well.

Joe and the committee worked innumerable hours to present the best candidate to the Board of Trustees for their approval.

The committee's first step last April was to submit an application for a Senior Rabbi to the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. The Union published our application in thei r monthly newsletter as well as on their website.

While the committee was waiting for resumes to come in, the Search Committee held coffees for the community to answer questions concerning the search. Also during this time, a questionnaire was written by a sub-committee, discussed and approved by the committee as a whole, and then sent to every congregant. You will recall that the result of the survey was that the most important quality that you were looking for in a Senior Rabbi was personal warmth.

The resumes came in and the committee then reviewed each resume and narrowed the choice to six applicants. Each of the six applicants was called and informed that he (no shes applied) would be interviewed on the phone with the entire committee listening to the phone interview. A sub-committee then met to formulate questions for the phone interview. These questions were reviewed and approved by the entire committee. The one hour phone interviews took place and the candidates were then narrowed down to three.

The final three candidates were invited to BJBE for a weekend. Saturday night was a dinner with three members of the committee. Sunday morning was spent with the entire committee at which time prepared questions were asked of the applicants. There was a break for lunch and then the candidate taught . a lesson to the committee. Sunday evening was spent with one-third of the committee and the candidate at dinner at my home or Joe's . Monday morning the candidate had breakfast with Joe and me and then went to the temple for a morning of interviewing with our professional staff. This was followed by lunch with the chairman of the personnel committee, Jim Ostach, Joe, and me.

After this process (one schedule had a variation), the committee narrowed the choice down to two candidates. The next step was for a small committee (Bernice Waitsman, Joe, and me) to visit each final candidate at his temple for a Shabbat service.

The process started in April and culminated in December. Again, thank you Joe and all 23 other committee members:

TORAH PORTIONS (PARASHOT) FOR JANUARY ... by Louise Herz Shapiro

Rabbi Eleazar ben Azariah said, "When there is no study of Torah, there is no proper conduct: when there is no proper conduct, there is no study of Torah". Pirke Avot 3:17.

The parashot that we read during January (Tevet/Shevat) are the first five portions of the Book of Exodus (Shemot). Our adventure begins with the enslavement of the Israelites by Pharaoh and their eventual release following the ten plagues sent by God and the tireless efforts of their leader Moses. Most of these stories will be familiar to you as we retell them each year during Pesach. Make sure you look at the question that follows each parasha and keep it in mind while reading.

"Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha olam, asher kidshanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu la asok b'divrei Torah. We praise you, Eternal G-d, Sovereign of the universe: You hallow us with the gift of Torah and command us to immerse ourselves in its words" .

.January I <Tevet 23l Parashat Shemot Exodus 1:1-6:1 Why is Moses so reluctant to be God's spokesperson to the Israelites? How does Godfinally convince him to take the "job"?

.January 8 IShevat ll Parashat Va'era Exodus 6:2-9:35 Rosh Chodesh Horrific plagues are inficted upon the Egyptians

yet Pharaoh still refuses to let the Israelites go because God continues to "harden Pharaoh's heart". Why do you think God does this?

January IS IShevat 8 Parashat Bo Exodus 10:1-13:16 Pharaoh finally allows Moses and the children of Israel to leave Egypt. As they are leaving, Pharaoh makes a strange request. What is it? {Hint: see 12:32)

January 22 IShevat lSl Parashat Beshalach Exodus 13:17-17:16 Tu Bishevat Why is this Shabbat known as Shabbat Shira

(Sabbath of Songs)? January 29 IShevat 22l Parashat Yitro Exodus 18:1-20:3

Which is the only one of the Ten Commandments that "assures" long life should you follow it?

SISTERHOOD NEWS ... The new milennium is finally upon us, and I for one, am relieved

that it has arrived. For the past year or so, marketers and manufacturers alike have been furiously jumping on the millennium bandwagon, selling not only software that promises to make all of our systems Y2K-compliant, but also such novelty items as talking "countdown" clocks and games like Millenniumopoly. Despite the fact that precautionary measures are necessary and celebration understandable (and fun!), the reality is that 2000 is just another year! Instead of preparing for things to happen--as we've been doing for the past year--now that the new year is here, we can actually make things happen. And there's no better vehicle than Sisterhood for making things happen. Mark your calendars and be sure to join us for our first event events of the year.

>Sisterhood Book Club--Book Club members: Please take note! Since facilitator Elise Barack was unable to attend our session originally planned for Dec. 8, discussion of Anita Shreve's book "Weight of Water" has been rescheduled for Jan. 12 at 7:30 at the Temple. Any questions, call Sandee Babsin at 847/998-6086.

>Mah Jongg Cards--Sisterhood is once again selling Mah Jongg cards for only $5 each ($7 each for large print) . We receive $.75 for every card sold, so buying Mah Jongg cards is a great way to support Sisterhood! All orders must be received by Feb. 1. Please send your check made payable t.o Sisterhood, to Andi Swidler, 1923 Fieldwood Dr., Northbrook 60062. For more information, call Andi at 847/272-5176.

>Awareness Through Movement:The Feldenkrais Method-Plan to join us for Sisterhood's second Open Meeting on Feb. 2 at 7:30 at the Temple as we welcome Kathy Lieb, guild-certified Feldenkrais practitioner. Kathy will guide us through a series of small, subtle exercises to show us how to tap into our brain's ability to regulate and coordinate movement. People of all ages and physical condition are welcome. Call Jill Jacobs at 847/724-1035 for more information.

>Lox Boxes--Treat yourself to a Sunday lox and bagel brunch or donate the cost of a box to help feed the hungry. Each lox box package containing lox, bagels, cream cheese, dessert, and more, will be delivered on Sat. March 4, 2000. If you would like to help in the planning or know of anyone who can donate premiums, promotional items, or advertising supplements, please contact Lois Perlman at 847/537-4556. Watch next month's bulletin for more information.

Now that much of the millennium hype is behind us, Sisterhood is looking forward to a productive new year. Wishing you and yours the same.

L'shalom, Naomi Kogan-Dein

BJBE STUDENTS HONORED BY THE OPTIMISTS ... Rachel Friedlieb and Lisa Primer were recently honored for their

Religious Service at an awards luncheon given by the Optimist Club of Glenview. Both young women are currently teaching in our religious school. Rachel is our Senior Youth Group President and Lisa served on the Senior Youth Group Board last year. Our Monday Night School Principal, Larry Glickman, represented BJBE at the awards ceremony.

Maze! tov to both of these outstanding young women!

FROM THE EDUCATOR'S PERSPECTIVE ... Thanks to a very generous grant from the Community Foundation

for Jewish Education, every student in our Middle School, grades 4th thru 7th, will have the opportunity to create a Jewish heirloom for their home. We will be travelling to "You're Fired", owned by temple member Susan Brenner, during the months of January and March. The 4th grade will decorate seder plates, the 5th grade tzedakah jars, the 6th grade Shabbat candle stick holders, and the 7th grade Kiddush cups. Each project will be the culmination of that grade's curricular unit.

On a personal note ... My husband Bruce and I have been overwhelmed by the support and love shown to us during this most difficult time in our lives. Being part of a caring temple community is a wonderful place to be. Thanks to all of you for being there for us. BJBE is truly our home and we feel blessed.

r~111 ~ NINO(,,J./CI~&··· z;~~~ ~ (la. CELEBRATION INFORMATION ...

~ As a part of the celebration honoring Rabbi Mark Shapiro on the

occasion of his retirement, a special commemorative book is being prepared. Unlike most books, this one will not be mass-produced as its contents are intended for one reader, Rabbi Shapiro. Furthermore, its authors will be YOU, the members of his congregational family.

The book is meant to contain your written personal expressions of affection and appreciation, whatever you might want to say to Rabbi Shapiro at this significant time in his life . You may wish to say simply, "Maze! Tov", or "Thank You", or you may choose to write or type a letter. Photos and drawings may also be included and all entries will be bound, as submitted, in a beautiful leather album. Each family page must be on standard 8-1 /2 xii" paper, with a I" margin on the left side so as to allow for the binding. Please do not/old the paper!

Your participation in this book will also provide monies needed for the purchase and presentation of a variety of gifts honoring Rabbi Shapiro for all that he has done for our congregation. Therefore, we are requesting a minimum donation of $36, double Chai, for each page. We will, of course, accept larger donations.

All submissions must be received by March 1, 2000, and sent to the temple office, with your donations, to the attention of Hannah Deitch.

ARZAIWORLD UNION, NORTH AMERICA ... ISRAEL SUPREME COURT DELAYS CONVERSION CASE UNTIL SPRING 2000

SHARANSKY GRANTS TEMPORARY RESIDENT STATUS TO REFORM CONVERTS

Israel's Supreme Court has delayed from early November until April 2000 the Masorti (Conservative) movement's conversion case involving a child adopted by an Israeli couple named Hanaton. The Masorti and Reform movements opposed the delay because of the many other cases which are backed up behind this case.

Fifty-two adults and children are waiting for a decision in this one case in order to have their own status decided by the court. Many have waited for years and most of the adults, including one 81 year old woman, are on perpetual "tourist" visas which must be renewed every 3 months and do not allow them to have medical coverage or permanent work. As a result of initiatives by the Reform and Conservative movements, the court decided to consolidate all the other pending conversion cases for hearing with the Hanaton case.

Contrary to expectations, Natan Sharansky, Minister of the Interior, had continued to implement the previous government's policy of refusing to register any Reform or Conservative converts to Judaism converted abroad or in Israel. Under the slogan, "One nation, one conversion", Shamsky stated both before a government commission and in the press. that he favored the Chief Rabbinate's exclusive control over conversions.

Your membership in ARZA/World Union supports the work of the Israel Religious Action Center as it fights for the religious and civil rights of all Israelis. Join ARZA/World Union and lend your voice to the struggle to shape a truly pluralistic and democratic society in the Jewish homeland. Tu B'Shevat·· The New Year of Trees

What is the significance of Tu B'Shevat? · . . . For weeks, even months now, the darkness of winter ha·s enveloped the

earth. The frigid cold extends its icy reach over the apparently lifeless terrain . But, deep inside the soil, a tiny seed begins to drink from the rains of winter. The sap begins its slow ascent to rejuvenate the trunk and limbs of the tallest oak. And though this process is unseen by the human eye, Judaism marks the miraculous renewal of I ife through the celebration of Tu B'Shevat.

Tu B'Shevat is known as the New Year of Trees. In addition to acknowledging the tremendous contributions of trees to our planet and even to our existence, this mid-winter full-moon festival is linked to the mystical images of God as a tree. So Tu B'Shevat also symbolizes the reawakening of the great Tree of Life.

What is a Tu B'Shevat Seder? The Kabbalists of Sated created a tradition of conducting a special seder

on the 15th of the month of Shevat. The Tu B'Shevat seder centers around the eating of fruit.and nuts, and the drinking of the fruit of the vine,. with blessings and refleCtion. ·

Three kinds of fruit are eaten at the seder. ·They represent three of the four mystical levels of creation. Fruits with tough outer shells, such as pomegranates and coconuts, represent assiyah, or action. Fruits with inedible pits, such as dates, olives and plums, symbolize yetzirah, or formation. Completely edible fruits, including figs, grapes, and carob, portray briah, or creation . The fourth level, atzilut, is so pure that it can't be represented by any fruit. By eating the different levels of fruits, we have the opportunity to reflect on the ways in which we are hard-shelled, hard-centered, or soft and pliable in our lives.

Like the Pesach seder, the Tu B'Shevat seder incorporates four cups of wine, from white to deep red, which symbolizes the cyclical journey from the pristine winter through the robust autumn harvest season.

Are there other ways to celebrate Tu B'Shevat? Yes! Tu B'Shevat is connected with environmental social action. We

encourage you to plant a tree, make a donation to the Jewish National Fund (JNF) to support tree planting in Israel, or donate to a Jewish environmental organization such as Shomrei Ada mah. Or, see the other side of this flyer to attend our own

BJBE Tu B'Shevat Seder Saturday, January 22n<1, 3:00-5:00 pm

Join us to encourage the flow of life, experience the diversity of the fruit of the tree, and mark the rebirth of the Tree of Life!

f::! . The Big Picture . . . . Havdalah Is the ceremony with· which we end Shabbat on Saturday evening (or traditionally, once three stars can be seen.) It literally means "separation,• and thus ls meant to concretize the transition from Shabbat (a day of i1me-out• from dally concerns) to the new work week. The ceremony Is designed to ease this .transition by giving us a concentrated taste of Shabbat to last us through the week and remind us that Shabbat will return. Havdalah Is a pleasant ritual, as it relies heavily on singing, dramatic lighting, the senses -In short, It is easy and fun.

"k'(i tldded tlttractions 1. The Ceremony

CandlEHlghting · .· 1.: . ·. We end Shabbat' with candle-lighting, Just

as we began It .. However, the Havdalah candle Is unique • one thick, twisted candle with three or more separate wicks. Once the candle Is lit, the three wick~ burn together to make a very bright flame. This reminds us that when we work together, we all benefit.

There Is a tradition that the. youngest person present hold the candle. You may want to provide a plate underneath for wax drips. .

The ritual of havdalah begins with lighting the Havdalah candle. However, we do not say a blessing connected to the candle until we have said Kiddush over the wine and enjoyed the sp!Qes.

The Wine ~ The first blessing in the Havdalah

ceremony is the familiar blessing over the wine. Be sure to pass the cup and give everyone a last taste of Shabbatl

The flame During Havdalah, we do not say the usual

. ble$slng over the candles which begins Shabbat or a· holy day; lns.tead, we concentrate oh the experience of seeing the candle. ·Again, this evokes In us the feeling of $habbat, with the light. of the candle dancing over the tabla.· Often people hold their hand up to the flame as they recite the following blessing, palm inward and fingers curled. Some say that this Is done simply to observe the play of·light and shadow on your hand. Others say that we observe the reflection of the candle, just as we observe the reflection of God In the world.

If you are ready to work a little harder than that, take any small open container (a paper cup, metallic cupcake wrapper, etc.) Decorate the outside (using markers, stickers, colored glue, ric rac, etc.). Fill the container with your chosen spices, and cover. You can use netting, colored celaphane, a dolly, etc., secured with a ribbon or rubber band.

If you would like to create a more permanent spice box, use this as an excuse to take a pottery class, and create a small jar with holes In the cover. You couk:! also buy a tin Klddush cup and cover it as described above.

Havdalah Condie 1 There are several ways to go ·about

creating your own candle. The first Is to soften three thin candies {like the slim Chanuka candles which come in a box of a single color) in warm water and twist them together. The second way is to melt pieces of Crayola crayons In a tin can placed in a pot of hot water. Once the crayons are melted, pour (with extreme caution) the contents Into a long, thin box {like one a necklace would be wrapped in) lined with tin foll. Insert three wicks

(available at a crafts store) and let cool. This Idea Is the brainchild of Gary Riskin, a teacher in our school. The third way to make a Havdalah candle . is to dip three candies and twist them while still hcit. See a crafts store or booklet for details on dipping candles.

There is an alternative ending, which changes the last line to •1m Mashiach Bat Rut: This ending reflects the belief that the Messiah wlil be a descendant of King David, who In turn is descended from Ruth. Ruth , who we know from the Book of Ruth and story of Shavuot, converted to Judaism. This reminds us to value .the contributions of both. men and ~omen to making the. world a better place. It also reminds us that once a person converts to Judaism, they and their

. . descendants ate fully ·kosher" Jews; capable of producing the Messiah!

We need Ellahu - we need hope fer a better tim~ - as we prepare to reenter our dally lives. Havdalah r~minds us that we carry the seed of Shabbat, the taste of a Messianic Age,· within us. On Shabbat we recharge our batteries, through study, relaxation, family time. During the work week, we should use that energy to better ourselves and the world around us.

. ~ And on a lighter note, the· rltuaJ · objects (or rtrm "'~ -klai kodesh) which are used for Havdalah are beautiful. Consider purchaSlng a set, as an addition to your family's Jewish •utensils.•

~ Most holidays end at sunset. Shabbat ends when three stars aree seen, to stretch out · the joy.
