5Belgian economic mission

HRH Princess Astrid, Princess of Belgium was born in Brussels on 5 June 1962. She is the sec-ond child of King Albert II and Queen Paola, and the sister of King Philippe.

At King Philippe’s request, HRH Princess Astrid will preside over the economic missions to An-gola and South Africa in October 2013 and to India in November 2013. It is widely recognised that missions such as these have a positive impact on the development of economic and trade relations between Belgium and its regions and many overseas partners. They also enable bridges to be built between Belgian and foreign companies as well as between Belgian compa-nies themselves.

As Honorary Chairwoman of the Queen Elisa-beth Medical Foundation (QEMF), the Europe-an Organisation on Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Charitable Trust and the Sci-ence and Medical Funds of the King Baudouin Foundation, HRH Princess Astrid supports clini-cal and fundamental research.

The Princess is also active in the fight against epidemics and pandemics: i.e. as “Special Rep-

resentative” of the Roll Back Malaria partner-ship to fight malaria.

HRH Princess Astrid is also particularly con-cerned by the plight of victims of violence. She is therefore fully engaged in the efforts to ban antipersonnel mines.

HRH Princess Astrid is also a member of the International Paralympics Committee Honorary Board. She is also the Honorary President of the non-profit association Damien Action.

HRH Princess Astrid is known to be highly con-cerned about persons who - through a variety of circumstances - become marginalised citizens. She visits and encourages in many ways those Organisations which offer assistance to those who are in need of help.

On June 20th 2013, the Secretariat of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention/Ottawa Con-vention announced that HRH Princess Astrid - as Special Envoy of the Convention - has joined a task force which will undertake diplomatic ef-forts to obtain the signature of the Convention by States not yet party to it.

Since 22 November 1996, HRH Princess Astrid has been a member of the Belgian Senate as senator by right. She also joined the Belgian Armed Forces on 22 May 1997. The Princess is a Colonel in the Medical Unit.

HRH Princess Astrid performs her public du-ties as expected within the context of the Royal Family with particular interest for the problems of our contemporary society.

HRH Princess Astrid studied art history at Lei-den in the Netherlands. She completed her edu-cation in Geneva, at the Institute of European Studies and in Michigan in the United States.

On 22 September 1984, HRH Princess Astrid married in Brussels Lorenz, Arch-Duke d’Autriche-Este, who became Prince of Bel-gium in 1995. The Prince was born in Bou-logne-Billancourt on 16 December 1955.

The princely couple has five children, all born in Belgium: Amedeo (21 February 1986), Maria Laura (26 August 1988), Joachim (9 December 1991), Luisa Maria (11 October 1995) and Laeti-tia Maria (23 April 2003).

The Antwerp-Waasland Chamber of Commerce and Industry is an organization that brings together over 3000 businesses from our region. The Chamber is an in-dependent, politically neutral interprofessional organiza-tion and covers multiple sectors. Companies are united purely by a sense of entrepreneurship. The Chamber contributes to furthering economic development of our Region by lobbying, networking and offering specific services to our companies.

The province of Antwerp accounts for a third of Belgian exports. Next to the presence of major telecommunica-tions, chemical, building and pharmaceutical compa-nies, the port, university, diamond industry as well as fashion make Antwerp a vibrant commercial hub.

Since the creation of the new democratic government, our Chamber has been a key player in the relations with South Africa. Through organizing missions, hosting a multitude of South-African delegations and successful training and capacity building projects aimed at support-ing the local development of SMMEs and transfer of ex-pertise - sponsored by the Flemish Government, SEDA and local partners - we became a reference in the field of supporting economic development in South Africa.

As a multicultural University in the heart of Europe, with one third of students and researchers from abroad, International Relations is a daily reality for the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), just like Brussels itself, one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities. The ULB’s outward-look-ing position with regard to Europe and the world has result-ed in a number of agreements, collaborations and partner-ships being set up with some of the world's top universities.Four Nobel Prizes, one Fields Medal and three Wolf Prizes are further evidence of the University's longstanding tra-dition of excellence. The ULB is involved in almost 80 projects financed by the 6th and 7th European Framework Programmes. In addition, the University's Institute for European Studies is recognized as a “Jean Monnet European research center”.

The ULB has 13 faculties, schools and institutes that cover all the disciplines, closely combining academic input and research. As a French-speaking university, most of the courses are delivered in French. However, a growing num-ber of Master programmes are partly or entirely delivered in English. The ULB offers a wide range of French courses, prior to and during the academic year, to help its interna-tional students improve their language skills.Since its foundation in 1834, the ULB has been closely in-volved in the ongoing debate on critical thinking and free-dom. The ULB has retained its original ideals as a free in-stitution that is firmly engaged in the defense of democratic and human values.

Access to information and communication technology is a key driver for the development of any society in to-day’s world. Improving access to information and ena-bling communication in developing countries contributes to the elimination of poverty, disease and contributes to better education and gender equality. The benefits of ICT can be delivered through new or reconditioned electronics, however in a lot of developing countries the cost of new equipment is often an access barrier to ICT. Unfortunately, new or reconditioned, when ICT equip-ment has reached its end-of-life, it can pose a serious environmental threat.

Close the Gap offers ICT equipment a second life in the developing countries to enable education and develop-ment. WorldLoop is providing an environmentally friend-ly recycling solution when the equipment has reached the end of its functional life by helping local communities establish an efficient, operational and auto-funded sys-tem for e-waste collection and recycling. In turn, these systems contribute to solving the environmental threat that e-waste represents and stimulate the local economy through job creation. By fostering proper e-waste man-agement, WorldLoop contributes to the environmen-tally sound and sustainable use of ICT in developing countries.

That's exactly what we've tried to do with our KiGA raised kitchen garden table. Assembled in 5 minutes!

That's also why we've developed the smartphone ap-plication. To help and coach people who wants to grow vegetables without knowledge about gardening.

The KiGA table is our first product but we're already working on accessories to enjoy it in different ways but always with a "green touch".

We are also developing some new products which will change the way we grow vegetables & herbs at home.

WATERLEAU’s mission is to protect the four elements of nature. It offers a complete portfolio of water, air and waste treatment technologies and solutions for the production of renewable energy. WATERLEAU has constructed plants for municipal wastewater treatment in Belgium, Morocco, Algeria, Iraq, Macau, China, to name a few.

To help cities cope with increasing population, WATERLEAU designs and builds Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plants capable of turning waste into green energy. In China, cities like Shanghai and Haian, recover over 20 MWe from their inhabitants’ household waste. Other WTE plants treat medical, industrial or hazardous waste.

WATERLEAU is a reference in the production of green energy from wastewater and biomass. It counts over 400 references in anaerobic wastewater, producing more than 1.8 million Nm³ of biogas per day, allowing industries to save on heat and power, and to recycle their effluent into process water. In Sub Sahara Africa, it has built more than 70 effluent treatment plants for the world’s Top-5 brewers.

WATERLEAU turns different kinds of biomass into new energy: manure, kitchen and restaurant waste, as well as the organic fraction of municipal waste, can be used as a valuable energy source. WATERLEAU offers the appro-priate anaerobic digester for each type of organic waste.

As a junction point in a dense network of international economic, cultural and political relations, Flanders has one of the most open economies and societies in the world. In the last few years Belgium consistently ranked in the top 5 countries of international globalization in-dexes by reputed companies or institutions such as Ernst and Young or the Swiss Economic Institute, with the exchange of technology and innovation being two in-dicators on which it scores well. Thanks to the high level of education, the ingenuity and the entrepreneurial spirit of its people and companies and with some help of the Flemish government, Flanders has managed to achieve a high level of expertise and innovation in areas such as cleantech, biotech, nano-electronics and ICT applica-

tions, equipment and transport and logistics. Between 2008 and 2010 Flemish companies achieved an inno-vation share of 62%. Besides investing in product and process innovation, Flemish companies have invested in organizational and marketing innovation. The Flemish companies, universities and research institutions that take part in this economic mission provide a representa-tive sample of the various assets that Flanders has to of-fer to the world. You are kindly invited to discover them.

The Minister of Economy and Vice-President of the Walloon Government, Jean-Claude Marcourt, and his cabinet are charged with overseeing the economic and social development of Wallonia.

To the five clusters of competitiveness created under the Marshall Plan, with the goal of creating a solid eco-nomic and industrial environment (Transport and Logis-tics, Healthcare, Mechanical Engineering, Agro-Industry, Aeronautics and Space Industry), has been added a sixth one dedicated to the green economy.

Sustainable development is ripe with real opportunities for Wallonia to enhance its economy. In light of this belief,

special attention will be paid to SMEs and new technolo-gies, which are also competencies of Minister Marcourt.

Located in the center of Europe, at the converging point of major roads, rivers, railways and air routes, Wallonia benefits from a high quality labor force and ample free spaces for the expansion of new economic activities; all advantages that Minister Marcourt, his team - in close collaboration with the Wallonia Foreign Trade and In-vestment Agency (AWEX) - will assert when promoting the benefits of Foreign Trade to the Region.

Belgium is a federal Kingdom comprised of three Regions (the Flemish Region, the Walloon Region and the Brussels-Capital Region) and three Communities (the Flemish, the French and the German Communities).

Belgium has a forecasted population of 10.7 million inhabitants (2013) and is one of the most densely populated countries in Eu-rope. Brussels is the ‘Capital of Europe’: it hosts the headquarters of the European Commission, the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament. Other major international organizations, such as NATO, are also located in Brussels. That is how Brussels ranks as the world’s number two city (after Washington, D.C.) in terms of the number of accredited journalists, and fourth in terms of the number of international meetings and seminars held.

With a surface of 30,500 km2, Belgium is one of the smallest member states of the European Union. Nevertheless, it is a significant player in the world economy. GDP (Gross Domestic Product) reached €376.9 billion in 2012 (estimation) and a fore-casted €388.8 billion in 2013. In line with the world evolution, Belgium’s growth rate was negative in 2009 (-2.7%). In 2010, the Belgian economy recovered and a growth rate of 2.4% was recorded. GDP kept rising in 2011, albeit at a slightly slower pace than the year before (+1.8%). Due to the financial and economic crisis, GDP growth was again negative in 2012 (-0.2%) and probably will remain so in 2013 (-0.3%) according to estimates

of the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Despite the recent downturn, Belgium is a high income coun-try, with an estimated GDP per capita of US$ 45,510 in 2012 (Economist Intelligence Unit).

In 2012, according to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Bel-gium was the 13th exporter and 13th importer of goods worldwide with a share of 2.4% and 2.3% respectively.

That same year it was also the 15th exporter and 15th importer of services worldwide with a share of 2.2% in both cases.

Since 2007, Belgium has been holding the top position of the an-nual KOF Index of Globalization, which measures the economic, social and political dimensions of globalization.

Belgium also boasts an exceptional higher education and train-ing system (number 4 in the world in 2012), with excellent math and science education, top-notch management schools and a strong propensity for on-the-job training. These elements con-tribute to an overall high capacity to innovate (11th in the world). Belgium’s goods market is characterized by high levels of com-petition and an environment that facilitates new business crea-tion. Business operations are also distinguished by high levels of sophistication and professional management.
