Letter from Revd Canon Sue Oliver

How this past year has flown and as I write this, it is not long after the first anniversary of being your parish priest. And an anniversary gives an opportunity to look back…and to look forward. Looking back, I don’t think anywhere I have worked as hard and for such long hours as I do here. Each of the villages is different, each has duplicates, not just of churches but also village/church halls, village institutions; there are three schools, three PCC’s ……it is impossible to do as much as I should like let alone what you all want me to do. Thankfully, I just love living in our beautiful countryside and being a parish priest. And looking forward, I have plans to seek to appoint a children and families worker , initially in Fairfield and Belbroughton who will be able to do so much more than I can with links between our schools and churches, working alongside young parents and following up on all the Baptisms/Christenings I do. And as we all need to do, I need to plan how to keep myself healthy and in good mental and spiritual shape. Being informed recently that I’m at risk of developing type 2 Diabetes, I need to do more exercise and lose weight. So, when you and if you see me around, please encourage me …we all need encouragement. As for the mental and spiritual well-being maintenance, in the first week of October I am going on a Pilgrimage, to Rome. Three years ago, I went with many of the same people t the Holy Land on pilgrimage and know that I am going to find it both a challenge and a joy (Just like parish life). It’s a Ecumenical Pilgrimage, jointly with Roman Catholics, half and half, co-led by Bishop John Inge, our Diocesan Bishop and the Roman Catholic, Archbishop Bernard Longley, both of whom are good friends. The whole experience is soaked in prayer and worship and I shall return brim full of the fruits of the Spirit, love, joy, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness and self-control (Galatians Chapter 5, verses 22-23). I came across in putting together some materials for something I have to do in Rome, the following prayer which speaks from where I am at and I commend to us all. O God, our Heavenly Father; we come to you in our weakness asking for strength. Help us always to be of good cheer. Let us never doubt your promises. Give us grace to be encouragers of others, never discouragers, always making life easier, never harder for those who come within our influence. Help us to be as Christ to others, that they may see something of His love in our lives and learn to love Him in us. Amen. Prayers and Blessings Canon Sue

Letter from the Archdeacon of Dudley

Over the summer I read the Good Childhood Report 2019 published by The Children’s Society, and was sad, but not surprised, to learn that children and young people have become increasingly unhappy as childhood becomes ever more complex. The society’s research shows that many children are unhappy with their friendships and their appearance, and are concerned about wider issues like school culture, the experiences of those with low or strained family finances, and whether

or not some children actually feel safe during the school day. Too many children are struggling with their lives now, and large numbers are also anxious about their future. Large proportions of children are worried about everything from money and getting good grades at school, to wider issues like crime and the environment.

It is so important that we keep reminding ourselves and each other that working with children and young people is one of our strategic priorities, and that as part of our Kingdom People vision we are

dedicated to helping children and young people to belong and be nurtured in faith

We can all play a part in this. Even if we don’t have many children in our church, most of us will have contact with children in our family and friendship groups. How can we better mentor them, share faith with them, instil confidence in them and communicate their inherent value to them? How can we help to ease their unhappiness? Perhaps by showing unconditional love, and spending quality time with them; certainly by committing to pray for them.

Mark Russell, Canon of Worcester Cathedral and new Chief Executive of the Children’s Society, said in his introduction to the report, “How can we enable children to thrive not just survive. How do we solve problems like rising mental ill-health, millions living in poverty and the scandal of far too many young lives being lost to knife crime and exploitation? We must start by listening to young people. I mean REALLY listening. We need to stop side-lining young people and harness their enthusiasm and radical energy for change.”

As a new school year gets underway, let’s commit afresh to helping the children of the Diocese of Worcester to belong and be nurtured in faith.Let’s pray for our church schools, all who work with children in paid or voluntary roles, and the Mission Enablers supporting churches as part of our Calling Young Disciples project, and let’s listen to the children and young people we know and harness their enthusiasm and energy for change, that their future might be full of hope, and our lives enriched by the part they play.

The year is flying round fast and Christmas is nudging its way onto the horizon. We still have some weddings to ring for this year so the bells will be sounding out on a Saturday or two. The beginning of October sees the Interbranch competition where the Northern (our area), Southern and Western branches of the Worcestershire and District Change Ringers Association compete on 6,8 and 10 bell ringing. Not being very competitive like that I will no doubt be taken part but not with great enthusiasm – don’t tell that to the troops! Also, it is on my birthday which wrecks that a bit (lot). I know I keep harping on, but I also know my ringers are aging and one or two will not be ringing much longer so any community enthusiasm would be appreciated. It gives time to learn for the celebrations of VE day next year. If anyone can think of any local clubs I can contact or talk to please let me know. KITCHEN CORNER

CHICKEN SATAY SALAD Ingredients 1 tbsp tamari 1 tsp medium curry powder ¼ tsp ground cumin 1 garlic clove, finely grated 1 tsp clear honey 2 chicken breast fillets 1 tbsp lime juice 1 tbsp crunch peanut butter Sunflower oil 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 2 gem lettuce hearts ¼ cucumber, sliced 1 banana shallot handful of coriander Seeds from ½ pomegranate Method Pour the tamari into a large dish and stir in the curry powder, cumin, garlic and honey. Mix well. Slice the chicken breasts in half horizontally to make 4 fillets in total, then add to the marinade and mix well to coat. Set aside in the fridge for at leas 1h or overnight, to allow the flavours to penetrate the chicken. Meanwhile, mix the peanut butter with the chilli sauce, lime juice, and 1 tbsp water to make a spoonable sauce. When ready to cook the chicken, wipe a large non-stick frying pan with a little oil. Add the chicken and cook, covered with a lid, for 5-6mins on a medium heat, turning the fillets over the last minute, until cooked but still moist. Set aside, covered, to rest for a few minutes. While the chicken rests, toss the lettuce wedges with the cucumber, shallot,, coriander and pomegranate and pile onto plates. Spoon over a little sauce. Slice the chicken, pile on top of the salad and spoon over the remaining sauce. Eat while the chicken is still warm. © bbcgoodfood.com

Belbroughton History Society: From the Archives Belbroughton in 1977 An article in Worcestershire & Warwickshire Life of August 1977, gives an interesting picture of life in Belbroughton some 40 years ago. The More the Merrier Club, then ten years old, was going strong:

The More the Merrier Club … took its name from the song which starts with these words – the song that is still sung as the prologue to every weekly meeting held on Tuesday afternoons. The fifty or so members – one of whom reached the splendid age of 103 this year – then serenade any of their number who is celebrating a birthday before hearing about the health of absent friends and enjoying a hand of whist or a spot of bingo or the discourse of a visiting speaker. “Really that Tuesday meeting in the church hall is one of the highspots of the week in the life of the village,” enthuses farmer’s wife Mrs. Joan Whitehouse, the industrious leader of the club on behalf of the WRVS. “As we’ve always celebrated any member’s birthday in a special way we shall, naturally, mark the club’s own tenth birthday this month with a cake and candles whatever else we do.”

Sport also gets a mention: Sport and the Church are inextricably linked in Belbroughton, not least because the late William Jordan, Rector for four years from 1945, was an England amateur footballer and played at centre-forward for West Bromwich Albion. He it was who started a Sportsman’s Service at the Parish Church, something that has lately been revived by the present Priest-in-Charge, the Reverend Hugh Pruen, and which drew a “gate” of around 120 worshippers. It would surely dismay Mr. Jordan, however, to see those dreaded initials “M.U.F.C.” scratched into the stonework of the Norman doorway today: presumably perpetrated by a missionary attached to Manchester United’s Red Army.

But all was not sweetness and light, and the article comments on a ‘Them and Us’ attitude between some longstanding villagers and ‘newcomers’, in particular because ‘by buying up small cottages and then enlarging them, they have ensured that such properties … will be beyond the pocket of local youngsters when they marry and want a home of their own’.

Yet one older resident, Mrs. Dolly Hodgetts, who runs a sweet shop and is said to be adored by every child in Belbroughton, takes the view that newcomers have saved many cottages from becoming derelict … What was it that brought newcomers to Belbroughton in the first place? “The putting in of the sewers,” replies Mrs. Hodgetts succinctly. “Everyone wanted to come and live here then. But I think it was pathetic when the local scythe works closed down [1968] because that was our biggest industry.”

One way and another, though, Belbroughton was well loved by many different people: Eric Phillips of Brook House, is one who remembers that during the last war “you couldn’t keep the Yanks away from Belbroughton – they loved the scenery and the fresh air”. To say nothing, perhaps, of the fast-flowing Belnge [sic] Brook, which gives the village its name and is one of its chief scenic delights (opposite Mr. Phillips house is a pleasing water garden created from the remains of a demolished flour mill). He recalls the days when the village possessed two butcher’s shops, three bakers, a hat shop, a draper’s, a shoe shop and another that sold hand-made shoes.

FAIRFIELD VILLAGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION The Movies Come to Fairfield A partnership of Fairfield Village Hall and Fairfield Village Community Association have launched Fairfield Flicks, a voluntary run cinema experience showing top films for the community to enjoy. During August, at a cost of over £7000, a high-quality High Definition projector, media player and sound system has been installed at Fairfield Village Hall; funded by the village Hall and Belbroughton & Fairfield Village Parish Council. Films will be shown on the Hall’s existing 5 metre wide screen. To mark the Village Hall’s 40th Anniversary, Fairfield Flicks was launched on the 18th September with a special screening of Fisherman’s Friends. Charity Coffee Morning & Posh Cake Competition On Saturday 5th October, there will be a Charity Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support & YANA (You Are Not Alone Mental Health Charity), between 10am- 12pm at Fairfield Village Hall. At the coffee morning we will be holding a ‘posh cake’ competition (the equivalent of the Great British Bake Off ‘showstopper’). After the judging, the entries will be sold for a small donation. FAIRFIELD WI Mary opened the meeting as Carol was away on holiday. Sheila will be holding her usual McMillan Coffee Morning on Friday 27th September between 10 am – 12 noon in Fairfield Villa Football Club. Tombola prizes or cakes would be very welcome. Ilse was not at the meeting but sent a letter through thanking everyone for the help and support in her first year organising the Produce Show. It was a very successful event with lots of entries. As usual we had a good turnout of the local community in the afternoon and I am sure everyone enjoyed the day enormously. It was also lovely to see Wendy Ahmed who opened the show for us. Wendy was at the first Produce Show 25 years ago and has supported it ever since. Discussions are already under way for next year’s show. We have two names to put forward for The Worcester Federation Denman Bursary. These will go against other WIs, so fingers crossed. The Data Protection and safeguarding forms will be completed in November. At Belbroughton Scarecrow weekend, Fairfield WI will be doing a floral display promoting Fairfield. Card making sessions will start on 23rd October between 1pm – 3pm

The Group Meeting is on 29th October at 7.30 pm in Tardebigge Community Hall. The speaker is Joanne Malin and the cost is £6 per head which includes a light buffet. We will need names next month. There is a lunch at the Chateaux Impney on 29th October 12 for 12.45. The speaker is Jules Hudson (Escape to the Country) and the cost is £40 for members The Annual Council Meeting is on 9th November at 10 am. We will need names of who will be going and the cost is £15.00

Bromsgrove Belles will be holding a Winter Fest at Bromsgrove School on 24th November. Our speaker this evening was Claire Campion on Memory quilts and Bears Business. Claire's working career was as a Biomedical Scientist. After she had her children she did not go back to work but instead turned her hobby into a business of making memory quilts and bears. I must admit I had not heard of this before. I believe it is done in the USA and such a good idea. Clients send clothes that their children have worn, probably since tiny babies to Claire and she incorporates them, after cutting into various shapes and sizes, into a quilt or bear. It is something obviously that can be kept for ever. She can also include the child's hand print or footprint on to the bear paws by embroidery and the use of a computer programme. So personal and something to cherish. This doesn’t apply to just children's clothes she has done a bear using a man's tweed suit also. In the future she is hoping to run workshops and also do pattern making as she finds running a business and having a young family quite difficult to manage and can be lonely. Very clever young lady though. She had a questions and answers session and there were a lot of questions from the floor. Shirley gave the vote of thanks. The competition of Handmade Memento Evoking a Childhood Memory was won by Maggie, 2nd Sheila Morris and 3rd Maureen Prust. Our next meeting is on October 9th at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. The entertainment is by Six Five Special skiffle band. The competition is 'An Interesting Thimble'. Do come along you will be very welcome

CLENT MOTHERS’ UNION

Our September meeting opened with our short service, after which our leader, Anne Harris, welcomed everyone following the summer break. It was good to see so many members in spite of a few apologies. Anne then introduced our speaker, Gaye Pye. Gaye had been to the branch a year ago when we were told about her work as a missionary. This time her talk was about her life in South Korea.

Gaye went with her husband and two very young children in 1977 and stayed for 17 years. She illustrated her talk with photographs and the house in which they lived was really nothing more than a hovel – no furnishings and a ‘dirt’ floor! Quite a test of faith and commitment. Soon a baby arrived and there were three under school age. Things did improve and they were eventually housed in an apartment block. On the spiritual side, they had great success, considering the majority of the population follow Bhuddism and other religions as a result of Korea having been occupied by Japan for 40 years. Today, the Korean church sends out more missionaries than any other country in the world. About 15,000 people belong to the church and children come to know Christ in their Scripture Union classes. Gaye gave us many facts about the Korean way of life, but the most curious has to be that ladies are not allowed to smoke until they have their 60th birthday! It was an interesting talk with far more than we can relate here. Anne thanked Gaye and presented her with a plant. Our next meeting will be on 3rd October at 2pm in the Parish Hall, our speaker will be Susan Price:- “Receiving the Royal Maundy Money”.

CLENT WI

With the brightening signs of autumn appearing and days getting a bit cooler we can look back to a warm sunny Saturday in September and ask ourselves, “ How did we manage that?” and come up with the answer, “With a little help from our friends.” It was a busy day for members, Saturday 7th September, The Clent Flower Show. What a wonderful show it was. All the hard work in putting the show together is thanks to the joint efforts of Clent WI and Clent Gardening Club members. The entries this year were stunning, so many flowers, vegetables; art, photography, crafts, home baking , preserves and locally bottled wine. There was a lot of good humoured competition between those hoping to win a First in their particular class. A crowd of dinosaurs (pretending to be vegetables) greeted us from a table top just inside the doors and kept us all on our best behaviour. We heard that the dinosaurs had come from Clent School! We didn’t know that dinosaurs went to school !! Luckily, we had the school’s head teacher, Rebecca Gordon, to open the show and present the prizes and to keep the dinosaurs in check. It was a very enjoyable day for all. It was a day of bumping into old friends and a chance to meet up with neighbours, old and new. Those who discovered the tea and cake tent, hidden away behind the hall, enjoyed themselves even more, as did the children playing out there on the grass. This was the 73rd show; what a lovely tradition for us to have on our doorstep. Our regular WI meetings began again on September 12th, when Sheila Oxspring gave us a talk on Homeopathy, a topic we were all keen to hear about.

This month, on October 10th, we welcome Caroline Hall to our meeting. Caroline will speak about The Legacy of the First World War. On November 14th we look forward to Lord Cobham’s visit to us. CLENT PRIMARY SCHOOL

The children and staff here at Clent Primary School have all returned from their summer holidays, refreshed and ready to learn and the first weeks of the Autumn Term have been very productive. The term got off to a great start with our traditions Welcome Service in the church. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful building to enjoy. Our new reception are settling in well, thanks in part to their fabulous Year 6 buddies. The children are also enjoying their new classes and learning together. Beech Class are particularly engaged by their work on World War 2, Ash Class love their new and improved outdoor area and Elm Class are thoroughly enjoying getting to know Miss Williams. Don’t forget that we would all like to extend a very warm invite to everyone to come to our Harvest Festival at 1.30pm on Wednesday 23rd October. CHOIR PROFICIENCY TEST In order to measure your level of proficiency as a choir member, the following test has been carefully developed by experts. Read and reflect on each situation and then select the option that will enhance the quality of the performance. 1. You are entering the choir loft on Sunday morning and suddenly trip and fall down. You should: a. Assume a kneeling position and break into fervent prayer. b. Pretend that you've had a heart attack. c. Crawl into the nearest chair. d. Begin speaking in tongues. 2. You are a soprano and count incorrectly. As a result, you boom out a high "C" one measure too soon. You should: a. Slide into an inspired "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing." b. Look triumphant and hold on to the note. c. Stop abruptly in mid squawk but keep your lips moving. d. Sink to the floor in shame. 3. After all those long, hard choir rehearsals, you show up twenty minutes late for the Christmas musical. You should: a. Climb into the back row of the choir from the baptistry. b. Enter pretending to be a soundman checking cables and then suddenly slip yourself into the choir. c. Turn the lights out in the church and slip into the choir during the blackout. d. Read M. Stephen's pamphlet "Techniques for Tardy Appearances." 4. While singing, you discover you have only one page of a two-page hymn. You should: a. Hum for your life. b. Sing "watermelon, watermelon, watermelon." c. Try to get another hymnal out of the choir rack with your feet. d. Sing the first page over again. 5. Inevitably that dreaded big sneeze occurs toward the end of the choir special. You should: a. As you sneeze, come down hard on your neighbour's foot to create a diversion. b. CLENT HISTORY SOCIETY

Our next meeting will be on Thursday 17th October 2019 at Clent Parish Hall 8.pm start with Julian Hunt who gave us that beautifully illustrated talk on Harry Vincent and the Blue Bird toffee factory. We have asked him to share his researches on “ William Shenstone and the Leasowes” What a super star of his time Shenstone was, both as a poet and an early exponent of romantic landscape gardening - developing waterfalls, wooded walks and glades with follies and statuary on the Leasowes estate. John Wesley was amongst his many admirers. This talk will be preceded by a very short AGM

CLENT HISTORY SOCIETY – FROM THE ARCHIVES

Extract from Parish Magazine October 1902 The Bells Committee, at a meeting held on September 16th, felt themselves justified in coming to two decisions; firstly that the old Bells should not be re-cast, but put in tune by careful turning; secondly, to entrust the work to Messrs. Taylor of Loughborough, who are in the first rank of English bell-founders. the six bells have already been taken away, and we hope to have them back, with two new ones, before Christmas. Meanwhile we must be content to be summoned to worship by one small Bell, and to miss the striking of the quarters and hours on our Church clock. Many fresh subscriptions have been promised, including £25 from Mr. E.F. Chance and £15 from Lord Cobham; beside which the other new bell is to be the gift of Mr. Thatcher. There is however, a sum of some magnitude yet to be raised. It will be of interest to mention something of the history which is engraved on our old bells. Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 bear the date 1681, in the reign of Charles 2nd ; no. 2 bearing the Latin words” Cantata Domino Canticum Novum” (O sing unto the Lord a new song.”) It was probably cast by Henry Bagley, whose name appears on the other three bells of the same date. The Peal was made one of five by the addition of No. 1 in 1718, in George 1’s reign. The names of John Waldron, William Cole, and Zeph. Cresswell are on this bell, but not the name of its maker. To make the peal six, the tenor bell was added in 1743, in the time of George II. The names of the Vicar and Churchwardens of the time and seven others are inscribed on the lip, with that of Richard Bagley as maker. We cannot help being glad that these old servants of our Church will not be re cast, but will keep to future genera- tions the shape and exact substance, less a little paring, which Henry and Richard Bagley gave them long ago.

The month of August started with a Friday evening visit to “Hiraeth” a private garden in Droitwich. The visit was rearranged from earlier in the year when a deluge of rain caused a postponement. This time the sun shone on a relatively new house with an unprepossessing front garden which hid a small but majestic rear garden behind its garden gate.

Not a blade of grass or weed was to be seen in a well stocked and enterprisingly laid out garden full of acers and a wealth of other plants and ornaments and with a large carp pond as a central feature. Members also enjoyed a relaxing coffee and slice of cake on our host’s patio. Later in the month the regular monthly meeting welcomed Rob Cole and his wife Diane to the village hall. Diane came fully laden with an array of plants for sale and left virtually empty handed. Meanwhile husband Rob gave a highly informative and entertaining talk on “Perennials from seed” giving a wealth of useful information on pot preparation and the best compost mix to achieve the best results. His talk was embellished with a practical demonstration which will doubtless have persuaded many members to upgrade their plant growing skills from seed. Rob explained that patience is a virtue as some seeds can take up to a year to germinate. He advised that seed pots can be left outdoors to overwinter and there is no need to put them in a greenhouse or cold frame as they will benefit from being open to the elements. Some protection from mice and birds may, however, be advisable and hopefully the results will then be seen in the garden in the following months. Furthermore the results will be profitable as one can gather seeds from existing plants without the need to purchase them from your local nursery. After the regulation question and answer session members and guests enjoyed tea, coffee and biscuits before the raffle was drawn and the Chairman announced the results of the monthly competitions. The Chairman reminded members that the annual Flower Show would be on Saturday 7 September at the village hall whilst the next monthly meeting comprised a talk by Steven Ballinger entitled “Seasonal Jottings from Clent Nursery” to be held at the village hall on Friday 27 September.. Gardening as a metaphor for Churches By Bill Wilson Spring 2014

What metaphors communicate clearly what a healthy church or minister is like? There are many of them, but the one that I keep returning to is that of the garden. As a gardener who finds personal renewal and energy in the rhythm and mystery of gardening and landscaping, I am drawn to this mindset as I engage congregations and clergy. I come from a long line of gardeners and ministers, and find the overlap more than coincidence. The garden is a powerful biblical theme that resonates deeply with me and with the way I approach ministry. I want to explore some of the ways I believe this metaphor is critical to the future of all of us. From beginning – “The Lord planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he formed” (Genesis 2:8) – to end – “On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations” (Revelation 22:2) – the Bible speaks of gardens, gardeners and growing things. Jesus taught many lessons involving plants, growth, agriculture and gardening. He invoked images of fig trees, soils, sowers, seeds, fruit, mustard seeds and vineyards to drive home his teachings. There are profound implications for us from the world of gardens, gardeners and plants as we seek to bring hope, help and healing to churches and clergy in the spirit of Christ. First, the power of the seasons is never far from the mind of the gardener. At the heart of any issue or project in the garden lies a central question: What season is it? No season is unimportant, and each season is indispensible for a healthy garden. We are currently enjoying the new life of spring after an especially intense winter. The wise gardener knows that spring will soon fade into summer and prepares accordingly. Understanding the life cycle of a garden is critical to creating and sustaining a healthy growing environment. In churches, our lack of understanding of life cycles and seasons may blind us to deeper causes than what the prevailing symptoms may suggest. Congregational life cycles are undeniable. Proactive renewal and re-imagining take place when leadership recognizes the need for innovation and a fresh vision for ministry. Just as a gardener knows the symptoms of decline, decay, renewal and new growth in the garden, so too the congregation leader keeps one eye on today and one eye on tomorrow. Healthy churches know to anticipate and plan for what is coming, not to simply live in the moment. Second, healthy soil is a prerequisite to healthy plants. Gardeners spend much energy and expense amending and improving the soil of their gardens. Doing so creates an environment conducive to vibrant growth. Plants and gardens need food to survive. Light, water, nourishment and nutrients combine to provide the building blocks of growth for a plant or garden. Churches that thrive are constantly seeking ways to feed spiritual truth and insight to people. Using a wide array of learning vehicles, combined with sensitivity to learning styles, they constantly innovate and create rich learning and growth opportunities for their community. Healthy churches know that sustainable Christians and churches require deep, rich soil. The parable of the sower in Matthew 13 reminds us of the folly of expecting rocky or shallow soil to produce mature believers.

July/August The Hagley Rotary Club started their summer by investing Godfrey Partridge as Club President, which was celebrated in style at the Crown and Sandy’s in Ombersley. At the handover meeting, Past President Julie Banks gave a pictorial presentation of her year in Rotary which had been a full and rewarding experience. President Godfrey said he planned for the coming year to be as full and rewarding as the last one with more social events and partners evenings which engaged the family of Rotary in its activities. Children from Chernobyl One of the highlights in our summer program is to host the Children from Chernobyl at our summer BBQ which is hosted by Rotarians Ann and Hassan Paraiso. The children enjoyed the football practice and trampolining proudly sporting their “I LOVE HAGLEY ROTARY” T-Shirts. Later Ann Beck, who is credited with administering this annual project visited our Monday Evening meeting with two of the children and expressed her gratitude to the Rotary Club of Hagley for its financial and moral support. French Connection As part of our international dimension and inclusive program we were privileged to have Ross McElligott, the new owner of “The French Connection” in Stourbridge as a guest speaker. He outlined in vivid detail the problems of taking on a business whose premises where not only old, but historical, and the compounded difficulties engaged in getting a new restaurant off-the ground when faced with structural improvements and maintenance ordeals. The evening passed with good wishes and applause for endeavour with the commitment for the club to visit the French Connection in the near future and sample the excellent cuisine promised. Many churches need to consider what it would look like to think about going “deeper” and not simply “wider” in their approach to ministry. Finally, context matters. Plants that may thrive in a rainforest die quickly in the desert, and vice versa. Each plant adapts to its environment and either finds a way to survive and thrive, or it must be moved to a setting more aligned with its DNA. The wise gardener knows to pay attention to climate zones, sun and shade tolerance, water requirements and other related factors. While some aspects of gardening are transferable to any setting, most gardens must be custom-designed to their context. Healthy churches are students of their setting and context. They understand that their unique location and culture is a defining component of their ministry. Ignoring it is inviting disaster. Ministry has common components no matter where it takes place. However, there are methods and approaches that are germane to your city, county, neighbourhood or region that differentiate you from all other congregations. Learning those distinctives and deliberately building a congregation that is congruent with them is essential for long-term health.
