Over 400 parishioners are currently exploring and developing their God-given strengths,

or words from spiritual writers about our relationship in Christ

as uniquely created children of God. It’s never too late to become involved in

Living Your Strengths, you’ll find much to deepen your relationship with God and others.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word – A Ministry of Love!

Every Sunday, 51 weeks of the Church year, Children’s Liturgy of the Word is offered at both Sunday Masses . We wish to thank all of our dedicated parents and adults who have led and assisted in leading these groups of children, for some of you many years. Our children love it and we want to serve them in this faith growing way!

We are in need of parents and adults to help facilitate this ministry. In order to maintain a commitment to serving one Mass per month, It takes a minimum of 10 facilitators and 10 assistants.

You will be trained and mentored with a Planning book to help you facilitate the readings for each age group. The children look forward to this gathering and it makes young families look forward to joining our parish, when they see how we embrace the youngest members of our faith community.

If you feel called to this ministry, please call Mary at the Parish Center at: 253-383-2783.

Clothing and Household items Donations

Youth Group will continue to collect clothing and household items to raise funds for our youth. Please bring your donations to the Church parking lot bin marked “Sight Connection” They pick up the items on Friday’s and Youth Group earns 20 cents for every pound collected.

Saint Patrick Catholic Church is transitioning to a new model of pastoral leadership – one that has been very successful in other parishes throughout the archdiocese.

The model includes a Pastoral Coordinator who will oversee the day to day administrative duties of the parish community including the staff, budget and more.

The sacramental needs of Saint Patrick Catholic Church & School – Mass, Reconciliation, Weddings, Anointing of the Sick and more will be handled by

three members of the Jesuit community in Tacoma: Fr. Tom Lamanna, the superior, Fr. John Fuchs, a familiar face at St. Patrick, along with Fr. Jerry Graham.

They have decades of experience and hearts dedicated to the faithful service of the Church.

Meet the team!

Kevin Lovejoy, Pastoral Coordinator

Kevin is the seventh of eight children. He grew up on Capitol Hill in Seattle, WA. They were parishioners at Saint Joe’s and the Cathedral. After graduating from Seattle Prep in 1977, Kevin moved on to the University of Notre Dame, and later earned a law degree from Catholic University.

He spent the next 25 years with his wife Lisa and their children traveling the world as an Army Judge Advocate. His final assignment as a Judge Advocate brought the family back to the Pacific Northwest, where they lived on post at Fort Lewis. Based on their incredibly positive experience as new parishioners at Saint Patrick, Kevin and Lisa and their four children - Sarah, Joe, Hannah, and Dan decided to make Tacoma their permanent home.

After working two years with Connelly Law Offices, Kevin hung up his shingle and accepted Father Seamus’ offer to serve St. Pats as the Parish and School Administrator, a position he’s held since April 2012. He looks forward to the opportunity to continue serving St. Pats in his new role as Pastoral Coordinator.

Father Tom Lamanna, S.J.

He was born and raised in Spokane and graduated from both Gonzaga Prep and Gonzaga U. He entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1986 and professed first vows two years later. He was missioned to St. Michael’s Institute at Gonzaga U for philosophy studies and Gonzaga Prep for his regency. He did his theology studies in Boston and was ordained in 1997. Then returned to Gonzaga Prep for his first assignment and was there through December of 2001. He made his tertianship in Alaska and after he was missioned to work at the Jesuit Novitiate in Portland Oregon. He was Socius to the Novice Director for two years and then was Novice Director 2004-2013, the last two years in Culver City California at the combined novitiate for the California and Oregon provinces of the Society of Jesus. The second semester of the 2013-14 school year he began teaching at Bellarmine Prep and became superior of the Jesuit community in the summer of 2014.

He served on numerous boards of directors; L’Arche Spokane, Bellarmine Prep, Gonzaga Prep, the Jesuit Spirituality Center (Portland), SEEL Portland. Besides his experience in secondary education and has been a spiritual director in both SEEL Spokane and SEEL Portland, as well as given Ignatian Spirituality training to the directors of SEEL Portland. He helped facilitate board retreats for the Secondary and Middle School Commission of the Oregon Province and St. Andrew’s Nativity School. He has provided retreats and faculty and staff formation for St. Andrew’s Nativity School, Seattle Prep, Jesuit High School, Bellarmine Prep, and St. John’s High School.

Father Jerry Graham, S.J.

Jerry Graham, S.J. is a Jesuit priest and poet. At the age of 35 he converted to Catholicism and joined the Society of Jesus three years later in 1989. He earned an MFA in Creative Writing, Poetry at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. His work has been in parishes and Ignatian spirituality. In his spare time, he has been working on a Christian epic poem: Ah Dante! Another Inferno. Before moving to the Bellarmine Jesuit Community in Tacoma, he served as chaplain for Gonzaga in Florence study abroad program in Florence, Italy.

Father John Fuchs, S.J

Fr. John Fuchs, S.J., was born in Tacoma, Washington, and grew up living three blocks from Saint Patrick Catholic Church. He attended St. Patrick Catholic School all eight years and was educated and disciplined by the Dominican Sisters. Sister Anthony, who is still a member of the parish community, drafted him into being an altar boy in the fifth grade. He attended Bellarmine Prep for four years, where he was brainwashed by the Jesuits and then entered the Jesuit Novitiate after graduation.

He was ordained in 1975. His first assignment was at St. Ignatius Church in Portland, Oregon. Then he was assigned as the assistant Novice Director of the Jesuit Novitiate. After that he received a counseling degree at Boston College and worked in the counseling department and Gonzaga University. Next he was appointed Novice Director of the Jesuit Novitiate for seven years. Following that he was appointed Pastor at St. Leo Church for nine years. He was the Spiritual Formation Director at the Palisades Retreat Center for six years and Superior of the Bellarmine Jesuit Community for nine years. Now he helps with the spiritual formation of the Bellarmine faculty and staff, offers spiritual direction for individuals, directs the Spiritual Exercises of t. Ignatius, and ministers to the sacramental needs of the Archdiocese, such as at Saint Patrick Catholic Church.

Respect Life

The Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. This theme is found also in the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). When the Good Samaritan came along, he didn't ask, "If I help this man, what will happen to me?" Instead the Good Samaritan asked, "If I do not help this man, what will happen to him?" That's the question for us. If I do not address this evil, what will happen to the unborn? If I do not get involved, what will happen to those who are vulnerable, those who are margin-alized in our society, those who are oppressed, those who have no one to speak for them?

There are many ways to help, publicly or privately, individually or as a group, occasionally or more reg-ularly, by giving your time or your experience or ex-pertise or financially. Call Paddie at: 627-0162 .

Jenny Páez, a 2013 graduate of CASFA, is the daughter of an administrator of a shoe store who earns a min-imum wage salary (approximately $240 U.S. a month). Her mother, during the time when Jenny was studying at CASFA, was working sporadically as a substitute teacher in pre-school. Now, her mother is an excellent First Grade teacher at CASFA. Jenny’s younger sister is currently an 8th grader (Freshman) at CASFA and, like Jenny, she is an excellent student.

During her time at school, Jenny always distinguished herself for her responsibility and her commitment to her classmates and to the school in general. She always understood how important studying is in the life of any person, as well as the development of friendships based on genuine care and mutual trust. Jenny meets frequently with the companions of her graduating class and maintains strong bonds of friendship with them.

Presently, Jenny is happily continuing in her 7th semester of studying Medicine in a recognized university in Bogotá. Her academic average continues to be very good. The cost of each semester is equivalent to the total of 15 minimum-wage salaries, which the family pays for through a 50% loan on a semester basis through ICETEX (a government student loan plan) and the other 50% is paid for by the entirety of her mother’s salary. (This means that their family of 4 lives on her father’s minimum-wage salary.)

Both Jenny and her family greatly value the integral formation that CASFA offers. Jenny states that while at CASFA, among many other things she learned the importance of living out the Franciscan values instilled at school. For her, the most important of these is to value the life of each person and all of creation. She stated that “we are here in this life to help each other, to collaborate with others, not to take advantage of others”.

News from Colegio Anexo San Francisco de Asis

Colegio Anexo San Francisco de Asis is the Franciscan school in Bogota where St. Patrick Parish makes it possible for 7 students to attend through our parish Mission Outreach. The school began in 1985, with the first high school graduating class in 1996.

Most students are the first in their families to complete high school.

NW Furniture Bank

Dozens of agencies work with the homeless, domestic violence victims and low-income population providing temporary housing and recovery programs. When clients complete the programs they may have new housing and a new focus for their life, however, they often have no fur-niture. NW Furniture Bank meets these needs by providing furniture to those transitioning into their own homes. Furniture is also available for foster children who age-out of the program and for people who lose all of their possessions in natural disas-ters.

NW Furniture Bank relies on furniture donations from the community to help furnish the homes of families and individuals in need. We can only ac-cept new or gently-used items. The NW Furniture Bank accepts donations Wednesday, Thursday, Fri-day, and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Re-member all donations must be free of rips, cuts and stains.
