We the people of Old Mission Santa Inés, following the path

of Jesus Christ, are making His vision a reality through

Parish Bulletin of

Old Mission Santa Inés

June 13 & 14, 2015 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

(Ezekiel 17:22-24; 2 Corinthians 5:6-10; Mark 4:26-34)

On Sundays in Ordi-

nary Time, the Old

Testament reading is

selected for the light it

sheds on the day’s

Gospel. Today, Ezeki-

el sees God lifting up

the lowly tree and

making the withered

tree bloom. So in the second

paraable of today’s Gospel, Jesus

encourages us by promising that,

as fragile seeds grow into an

abundant harvest, and the tiny

mustard seed into a hearty plant,

so God will grow the kingdom

from small beginnings to an in-

strument of salvation for all. In

the first parable, the land yields

fruit “of its own accord” (Mark

4:28). Not only is the initiative

God’s, but the parable teaches that

the seed’s growth, though invisi-

ble at first, is actually unstoppa-

ble! To be sure, those

who depend on the im-

pressive or dramatic in

order to be convinced

or encouraged will be

disappointed in the slow

unfolding of the king-

dom that Jesus an-

nounces. But for those

who do accept the kingdom, all is

grace, and that grace is certain.

Though the second reading is

not coordinated with either the

first reading or Gospel on these

Sundays, today’s is thematically

appropriate. Saint Paul argues that

our experience of God’s trustwor-

thiness thus far should make us a

people of undaunted courage and

unshakeable faith. But at the same

time Paul warns that faith should

also make us aware of our respon-

sibility to do good. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Facts about Junipero Serra:

1.) Did you know that on November 24, 1713, a very weak

little boy was born in Petra on the Island of Mallorca? He

was baptized quickly because everyone was afraid he would

die. Miguel Jose Serra did grow up to be a small man. But

this small man walked thousands of miles through the Mexi-

can and California wilderness in the service of the Church to

evangelize the Native Indians.

2.) When Miguel Jose Serra was fifteen, he was sent to Palma to continue

his studies. There he worked hard and lived the life of a Franciscan Friar.

After two years he joined the order. He took the priestly name of Junipero.

He named himself after a friend of St. Francis of Assisi. The original Juni-

pero was a man known as “the clown of God.”

Many, many thank you’s are ex-

tended to the many parishioners and

friends who so graciously give their

love and time during the month of

May. We had the funeral reception at

San Lorenzo for the Jack Robertson

family with helping hands from the

friars, novices, and the Sunday wor-

ship community; the Confirmation

reception for Archbishop Jose

Gomez; the thank you reception for

Fr. Brendan and Fr. Gerald; breakfast

and lunch for the Watts eight graders

who traveled to the Mission for their

annual day of retreat; followed on

June 3 with our annual Grotto Mass

and Garden Lunch.

Datos sobre Junípero Serra:
