Facing climate change and nine billionmouths tofeedby2050,expertssharedtheirthoughtsonthefutureoffoodsecurity.

Inarecentlivechat, apanelofexpertsjoinedreadersonlinetodiscussthefutureofsustainableagriculturein the face of changing weather driven by climatechangeandincreasingcompetitionforfood. Here are 10 things we learned:

WE SHOULDN'T JUST "ACCEPT" CLIMATE CHANGE

Justbecauseclimatechange ishappeninganditseffectsarealreadybeingfelt, weshouldn'tgiveup on efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.AgriculturalGHGemissions, make up about 25%ofglobalGHGemissions,but there's a lot that canbedonetoreducethis.

Richard Waite, Associate, Food, Forests and WaterProgram,World Resources Institute (WRI) explains:"By intensifying agriculture on existing land andprotecting the remaining forests, we can eliminateemissions from land-usechange.Andbyaddressingkey emissions from agricultural production fromcowsandotherruminants, fromfertilizers, andfromrice production practices, we can greatly reduceemissionsfromagriculturalproduction."

WE DON'T NEED TO "ACCEPT" A WORLD WITH 9.6 BILLION PEOPLE BY 2050

The world population is growing, but fertility rateshavefallenrapidlyoverthelastfewdecadesasgirlsgain better access to education and reproductive

health services. African governments have madehealthandeducationaprioritybutgreaterinvestmentcould reduce the population challenge and thedemandforfood.

This is especially important in sub-Saharan Africawherehalfofpopulationgrowthbetweennowand2050willoccur.ArecentreportfromWRIestimatesthatachievingreplacementlevelfertility(therateoffertilityatwhichapopulationexactly replaces itselffrom one generation to the next) in Sub-SaharanAfricaby2050wouldreducefooddemandbyaround600tnkilocalories(kcal)peryearbythemid-century.This would close 9% of the 6,500 tn kcal per yearglobalgapbetweenfoodavailablein2006andfoodneededin2050.

    SWITCHING CROPS IS THE FUTURE

Emphasis will be on climate smartagriculture in the short-term, but in

10 to 20 years time, the focuswill be on switchingcrops, saysJasonClay,Seniorvicepresident,Markettransformation, WWF. As climate change affectscommercial crops, alternatives will have to besoughtout.Claypointsthatsorghumisalreadybeingsubstituted for corn and maize because it can beused in feed and produce like beer. InMexico, thegovernmentislookingtovarietiesofcocoatoreplacecoffeecrops, whichmaynotbesuitable togrowby2025 due to blight and heat as a consequence ofclimatechange.

With the right technical assistance andpackages ofbetter genetics, management practice and inputs, switchingcropscouldbeanopportunity forsmallerfarmers struggling with current crops to leapfrogpreviousperformanceandbecomemoreproductive.

    RESEARCH BREAKTHROUGHS NEED MORE INVESTMENT

Sustainability, at Agri-business Olam International. But for the next wave of research breakthroughs,theFAOhasestimatedthatwewillneed$45-$50bnannualspendingglobally.It'scurrentlyat$4bn.

CULTIVATING TREES ON FARMS CAN BOOST CROP YIELDS

According to Waite, over the last few decades, farmersinNigerhavemanagedthenaturalregrowthof native Faidherbia trees across 5m hectares. TheFaidherbia fixes nitrogen in the soil, protects fieldsfromwindandwatererosionandcontributesorganicmatter to soils when its leaves drop. Compared toconventional farms in the country, yields of maizein these agroforestry systems can be doubled andfarmers in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Zambia are takingnoteofthis.

SMALL-SCALE FARMERS ARE VITAL TO DOMESTIC FOOD SECURITY

Small-scalefarmershaveaguaranteedandgrowingmarketforstaplecrops,but,theUKproduces24%lessfoodthanitconsumes,saysCharlesTassell,farmer and co-founder of AgriChatUK. This comestoday,asMPswarnthattheUK'sabilitytofeeditselfisthreatenedbycomplacency.Overthelast20years,theUK'sself-sufficiencyfordomestically-grownfoodhasfallenfrom87%to68%,whileyieldsofitsmostimportant staple crop, wheat, have not increasedfor at least the last 15 years.Brown argues thatgovernments, banksandcompaniesmustcoordinateto support the 500m global small holders to scale-up agri-production enterprises. This support shouldinclude legal land tenure, global policies for a levelplayingfield, accesstocapitalandmarkets, structuredtraining(bothagricultureandbusinessdevelopment),andinvestmentintechnologyandinfrastructure.

URBAN FARMS SUIT TOMATOES, NOT COWS

If urban farmers reduce the need fortransport, refrigeration and packaging, and sourceinputs from local waste streams, then city farmscouldofferasustainablealternativeforgrowingfruitand vegetables, says Oscar Rodriguez, Director ofArchitecture and Food. However, livestock farmingandurbanlivingmakealesspracticalcombination.

    MEAT IS OFF THE MENU

Achieving replacement level fertility, reducing food loss and waste, reducing

biofueldemandforfoodcropsandshiftingourdiets, willallgosomewaytoclosingthegapbetweenfoodavailableandfoodrequired.Anymeaningfulchangeto consumption patterns and the environmentalimpacts of food production though, will have toinvolve knocking animal products off the menu,especiallybeef.ChrisHunt,DirectorofGRACE'sfoodprogram,pointstoconsumercampaignslikeMeatlessMondayasevidenceoftrendingintherightdirection.

THE DEFINITION OF A "GOOD" FARMER IS CULTURALLY COMPLEX

Whatisgoodcriteriaforoneperson, maybeshockingforanother, saysLouiseManning,Seniorlecturer in food production management, RoyalAgricultural University. In terms of animal welfare, stocking density might be considered an indicatorof negative performance but in terms of resourcemanagement, apositiveone.

EVERYONE HAS A ROLE TO PLAY

    TheWRIreportonCreatingaSustainableFoodFutureestimatesthatweneedabout

Everyone needs to eat, so be it reducing food lossand waste, eating lower-impact diets or investingin sustainable production - countries, companies, and consumers canmake a difference. Surroundedby abundance, the challenge is making consumerscare.Onthis,LizBowles, headoffarmingattheSoilAssociation, pointsoutthatifeveryonetriedtogrowtheirownvegetables itwouldbringhome justhowdifficultfoodproductionis.

KSPCB PRESENTS A SNAPSHOT ON EFFECTIVEELECTRONIC WASTE MANAGEMENT

Discarded electronic equipment is oneof the fastest growing waste streams inindustrialized world, due to the growingsalesandrapidobsolescenceoftheseproducts.Electronic waste already constitutes a smallpercentofthemunicipalsolidwastestreamandis growing rapidly. Electronic waste comprises of obsolete, discarded, end of life computers andperipherals, printers, fax and copiers, CDs,floppies, cartridges, printed circuit boards, mother boards and components, cell phones, pagers, telephones, audio and video devices, refrigerators, washing machines, microwaveovens, air conditioners, fluorescent lamps, dry cells and batteries, industrial and household electronics.
