Learning Diaries

• Pictures from home can go into the children’s learning diaries as well

as wow slips.

• Children can stick into learning diaries a piece of work that they are proud of too – e.g. a colouring sheet.

Reading at home

It is really important to share books at home be it librarybooks or school reading books. Children are sent home with a book without words in their first week at school because

beinga reader is not just about being able to decode words butabout being able to tell a story, make a prediction, useinference and talk about the characters in a story amongstother comprehension skills. It may be that you read the samebook more than once to get the most out of the story.

Start by looking at the title of the book and the sounds in theinside front cover.

ABC It is important that children know that each letter sound has

aletter name and we sing an alphabet rap so that they learntheir alphabet, but they must sound out words using the

letterSound when they are reading.

How to help at home We have started sending home learning folders home with

your children showing the sounds that we have been learning. You can use their sheets as you want - colouring, letter practise. Some children enjoy looking through magazines and catalogues for things starting with these sounds and sticking them in.

Encourage a correct pencil grip when you see your child holding felt pens, paint brushes etc. Try a clothes peg if they find this hard. “Quacky fingers”!

When writing letter shapes encourage anticlockwise and vertical strokes.

Let your child see you enjoying reading and writing.

Name writing practise – in sand, with felt tips, crayons, anything!!
