“The applicant should propose a contemporary response to an aspect of Italian landscape and pursue a selected topic with direct bearing on modern design in the landscape.” 2012 IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe INTERNATIONAL ROME FELLOWSHIP IN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE My proposal consists primarily in a study of the evolution of the Roman agricultural landscape, with basic approach to the wide Italian Landscape. And how can Italy, and more precisely Rome, can rescue and develop this values, present in the landscape of Italy in the modern landscape design.

As a contemporary response, my proposition, taking into account the evolution of the Italian agricultural landscape, is the urban agriculture, and how this type of modern agriculture can be included in the landscape of an Italian city like Rome, where this practice have almost disappeared.


As a more specific example of this kind of approach in Rome, my propose is to develop a project for a new urban park located in the area that is now the Parco Centocelle, on the northeast of the city, previously abandoned and now a urban park under construction, that was a 95 hectare of agro Roman, which can be transformed into a Park capitalizing on the theme of agriculture. With the creation of sustainable community gardens, contributing for food and income for the local people, and also promoting the development of different activities and events such as fairs, selling local products, organic weekly market, food fairs and exhibitions, etc.

Centocelle The name Centocelle is known for many centuries because it derives from "Centum cellae," a military citadel built by Emperor Constantine I, which was where one hundred of the best horsemen of the imperial Roman guard, the "Equites singulares" and their horses were trained. Represented as a site for the Campus Martius. Centum cellae means one hundred rooms. In the site of the Park was also discovered remains of Roman villas and majestic thermae (Tor de Schiavi) in addition to the Centum Cellae. Three large Roman villa, dating back to 700 BC, evidence of a continuous human presence from the sixth century B.C. until the sixth century A.C. Centocelle had a great development in the birth and development of the adjacent airport of the same name, the first Italian airport, officially came into operation in the 15th April 1909, when Wilbur Wright came to write a series of demonstrations of the Flyer.
