Paper Moon
“Reading is a vacation for the mind.” ~Dave Barry
Staff Member: Heather Panella Title: Public Services Librarian, Young Adult Services Librarian Book: Emma in the Night Author: Wendy Walker Summary: One night three years ago, the Tanner sisters disappeared: fifteen-year-old Cass and seventeen-year-old Emma. Three years later, Cass returns, without her sister Emma. Her story is one of kidnapping and betrayal, of a mysterious island where the two were held. But to forensic psychiatrist Dr. Abby Winter, something doesn't add up. Looking deep within this dysfunctional family Dr. Winter uncovers a life where boundaries were violated and a narcissistic parent held sway. And where one sister's return might just be the beginning of the crime. Review: Emma in the Night is a tightly plotted, well-developed psychological mystery that drops enough red herrings to keep the reader both intrigued and in the dark up until the very end. Walker creates a ripped-from-the-headlines, believable tale that is populated by characters who are mentally and emotionally broken but also relatable in some ways (especially Cass and her sister). It’s also an incredibly interesting look at the true nature of narcissism. There are a fair number of twists and turns in the story and they get a little tiresome, they also serve the purpose of fully revealing the motivations and personalities of the characters. Cass’s first-person narration interspersed with Dr. Winter’s third-person investigation creates a unique dynamic that fully rounds out the story and brings its finer points into focus. Recommendation: Fans of thrillers and suspense novels like Gone Girl and Girl on the Train will find a lot to love about Emma in the Night. The book is a fascinating look at mental illness and family dysfunction that will make any book club gathering a successful one.
